2016-17 Game Thread: Knicks vs. Mavericks

The Knicks begin a homestand tonight with their first game against the Dallas Mavericks, who are in a total shambles as a franchise, as Dirk might finally really be slowing down (he is pretty darn old).

The Knicks really, really need to win this game. 4-6 is nicely mediocre. 3-7 is awful. The Mavericks are bad and their guards are not scary. So this should be a win. Not a “hey, maybe the Knicks could win this one!” but “they better win this one.”

Let’s go, Knicks!

  1. Somebody called it yesterday, but I forget who. Knicks will be down 15 at some point in the 1st quarter. But it’s ok guys, they’re still “figuring it out.”

  2. Took the 14/15 Knicks 14 games to get their 4th win… This game is our best chance to tie that. Washington is pretty bad, but it’s the second night a back to back.

  3. Markelle Fultz here we come!

This team has at least a 50% chance of being worse than Brooklyn

  4. yikes…i don’t know which is rougher on me – checking in to see some of the posts here, or following the box score…

  5. @13 I remembered that exactly, like… it’s not possible, is it?

apparently everything is possible against the Knicks defense.

  6. Pretty sure Ndour is better than every bench player on our team besides O Quinn

    Is that a good thing

  7. I can’t watch the game at the moment, but I can track the box score. Due to rebounds and whatever, the Mavs have taken many more shots than the Knicks. It’s hard to win that way.

  8. @22 he might be able to create Kobe assists and he definitely passes the eye test… I just don’t know if he’s able to make his teammates better by taking the toughest shots and he never gets calls, refs are obviously against him.

anyway, more N’Dour KP Billy H. frontcourt please.

  9. Rose keeps hitting the front of the rim on jumpers, please just don’t shoot… or better, stay on the bench.

the Mavs are so bad that this might just be a W after all.

  10. It really amazing how bad the Mavs are that the Knicks are still in this game despite playing one of the shittiest first halves you can imagine seeing. The Knicks scored 36 points in the first half!!! And are trailing by just three! They are probably the favorite to win this game despite only scoring 36 points in the first half!! And it wasn’t even like one of those old school games. This was just shitty basketball on both ends. Harrison Barnes actively annoys me, that’s how disgusting his whole game is. He makes DeMar DeRozan look like a modern NBA player.

  11. Stating the obvious but the starters couldn’t be more disappointing. KP doesn’t gel with them at all … couldn’t be more unappealing for us fans or really anyone that watches basketball.

  12. KP playing well on defense. Incidentally also playing closer to the rim on D

I think part of his struggles on D have to do with the really conservative scheme fisher ran last year which funneled guards into the middle while KP and RoLo sat back.

This year there seems to be much more switching and ball pressure but positions 1-3 are bad at it

  13. According to Chauncey Billups Melo watches more film on his own than anyone he’s played with.

  14. has melo gotten off to any good starts yet this whole season…i tried looking up player stats by quarter, but failed miserably…it seems like every game he’s shooting under 30% at halftime…

  15. We won’t win this game…

…but the Mavs might lose it.

I dunno, the Knicks played so poorly in the first half that I could easily see them improving just a little bit and winning the game going away.

  16. He stops the ball and freezes his teammates. There is no passing in the game once he touches the ball. And his defense is not good either.

  17. Just looking at the box score, it seems like the Knick’s starters were out rebounded by the Mavs’ starters. Our weak rebounding seems like a theme so far this season.

  18. Agreed, the poor rebounding is definitely a major issue. There were a couple of possessions where the Mavericks had multiple offensive boards and still didn’t score, because they suck, but against other teams, that would be killer.

  19. Hornacek is probably the only member of the organization smart enough to realize that KP and Melo should be the 5 and 4 but gonna be tough to do with Noah’s contract.

  20. NBA action – it’s craaaap-tastic!!!

ya know – it really shouldn’t be this painful to be a fan…

  21. Well we finally got the 90’s knicks everyones been begging for. I say Knicks 77 to 76. Kp hits a runner of the front rim and in with 0.7 sec left.

  22. Derrick Rose has been terrible. I like the guy but he is not what we need. Maybe Miami will trade for him; he’d be a lot better running P&R with Whiteside all day.

  23. Can we give the home team just a little bit of credit? How ’bout throwing Sasha a little love at the very least?

  24. Okay the knicks have the lead, can we put Cronin in the penalty box to keep him from posting that momentum swinging post he always does when things are going good? LOL.

  25. I love this team and I’m glad we’re winning. We’re not a team that can expect wins so yeah we’ve been playing well tonight. The thing is I’m looking for encouraging trends and I can’t find them. Noah, our most important off season addition, can’t seem to play and Derrick Rose is a foul and turnover machine. Those two have to be better if we wanna be better than a 42 win team.

  26. Okay the knicks have the lead, can we put Cronin in the penalty box to keep him from posting that momentum swinging post he always does when things are going good? LOL.

Hey, I correctly noted that they were going to blow ’em out in the second half! The Mavs suuuck.

  27. @106 Holiday looks good when he doesn’t have to create in the second unit. He should keep starting

  28. Good coaching by Horny tonight. No reason to give minutes to Noer or O’Quinn against this Mavs team.

  29. Yeah, so nice I won’t have to read crap about how much Holiday sucks and we should still have the awesome Grant on the roster. At least until the next game….

    Lets go Knicks!!!!

  30. Actually, Rose only took 6 shots and got three points, but has 5 assists and 4 rebounds and is plus 20 for the game. That seems like a Rose that is helping the offense run well, not the terrible player some of the game comments indicate.

  31. Did they ever say if Noah was hurt? He was awful and I could see not starting him in the second half just to shake things up but I’m surprised he didn’t play at all. Also- Ndour has to be one of the least aware players I’ve ever seen on the offensive end- every pass seems to catch him by surprise.

  32. They never ever look to pass to Ndour, so he’s probably legit surprised.

I think they said Noah wasn’t hurt.

  33. Pretty obvious they didn’t need Noah out there, it wasn’t injury or poor play. Bogut was in foul trouble the whole game and Barnes was playing the 4. Not a big deal.

  34. I am so excited for the show that KP put on tonight. If [there is that dreaded word] KP becomes the guy who showed up for the third quarter, he can be the best player on a championship threat.

  35. Bro Derrick Rose had 4 fouls and 5 turnovers tonight. That’s awful basketball. We need him to be way better.

  36. Only three players currently have > 10 blocks and > 10 made three-pointers this season: Kevin Durant, Draymond Green & Kristaps Porzingis.

  37. I do think that Joakim Noah is still an extremely useful player in the NBA, but he may not serve a purpose on KP’s Knicks. The Knicks need to move KP to the 5 full time and add a guy like Otto Porter or Tobias Harris to play between Melo and KP. I love Noah but if he can’t give us 30 minutes a night he is more valuable to us as a trade chip.

Agreed. Its been his perimeter (and his pick and roll) defense that has suffered.

  39. Our little boy is growing up.

Dirk says Kristaps Porzingis stared him down on the bench after hitting a one-legged in homage to Dirk tonight: "That was cold-blooded."— Earl K. Sneed (@EarlKSneed) November 15, 2016

  40. It’s great that Boston keeps losing but annoying we’re like the only team they played well against

  41. Heard someone on a podcast (Dubin maybe?) say that Dirk has said he wants to work with Kristaps this summer

  42. DRed, Mike Breen said it on the cast tonight if I recall correctly, that Dirk gave KP his number when the Mavs came to NYC last season.

  43. Heard someone on a podcast (Dubin maybe?) say that Dirk has said he wants to work with Kristaps this summer

He actually offered back last season. KP wanted to make it happen but their schedules wouldn’t allow for it. Here is a good article about it.

  44. who’s next for dem mighty knickerbockers…none shall stand in our way…

hmmmm, if I can just continue to conveniently miss (like saturday, totally forgot they had a game) the games they lose; and, only really tune in when they win – this will be a very successful season indeed…

  45. Heard someone on a podcast (Dubin maybe?) say that Dirk has said he wants to work with Kristaps this summer

They were supposed to work out this summer but I believe KP schedule never opened up to make it work.

  46. Porzingis is so awesome.

It is nice when Holiday hits his shots, because he’s going to shoot the ball whenever he gets a chance. That dude lets it fly!

  47. Another absurdly brilliant performance from Chris Paul tonight: 21 points on 11 FGA, 9 assists with 1 turnover, 5 steals. What a sublime player.
