2016 Game Thread: Knicks vs Spurs

The New York Knicks are over .500! How long will it last?

Based on our results the last couple of seasons, maybe that’s not a superstition worth continuing, even if the name changes?

Carried over from the previous thread:

True, but I think THJr had the benefit of the doubt because he’s “only” 23 and so still has some (only perceived) upside while being on a cheap contract. Calderon is 34 and coming off a season full of terrible play and injuries while also being on a pretty horrible contract. It’s possible that he could be moved in a bamboozle of a trade, but it’s even less likely than it was for THJr.

That being said we DID trade steve novak and a first round pick for the right to pay Bargnani 12m but there’s only one James Dolan in the league unfortunately.

I think you’re underestimating the collective adoration of “veterans” the brain trust of most teams seem to have. Dolan may be the worst, but he’s far from the only moron in charge of a team. I’m not saying that we’ll definitely be able to trade Calderon for something that resembles an upgrade, but I wouldn’t be so quick to just discount the notion altogether.

I still have faith Jose Calderon will get his shit together. I don’t believe you just lose your ability to shoot a basketball and get assists.

Remember that guy Mike Bibby?

I dont want to put my hopes up but yeah! lets win NY!
Kristaps vs Duncan.
Years from now we will watch this tape as the first match up between Kristaps and Duncan.
Also, Melo seems to be hot for few straight games based on past production. So I expect Melo to score 30 plus today. He need to be the superstar Melo.

Another tough game for the Knicks. This one makes the Wizard game seem like a cake walk. Realists will have chalked this one down as a loss before the tip-off.

On the optimists side, Parker is great but an easier guard for Calderon than Wall was.

The pessimist would say that the front court of Duncan and Aldridge is almost unfair. And the Spurs best player might be Kawhi Leonard who could shut Melo down.

But let’s see it play out…

Let’s go Knicks!!!

Second team they’re getting on the second night of a back-to-back! The last time worked out well! The Celts really made the Spurs work last night, too!

Couple of fugly offensive possessions there, and then nobody helps Porzingis so he’s forced to guard Duncan one-on-one and predictably he fouls and is now headed to the bench. Porzingis looks terrific though.

To call Lopez’s hook shot a hook shot is a mistake. It’s really a push shot that he shoots backwards over his head. So ugly.

Suddenly both teams look like they’re playing the 2nd of a back-to-back. It’s time to attack the basket. Good time out by Fisher. Porzingis looks awesome. The the hard drive that looked like it would be an attempted dunk but ended up being a soft banker showed showed special basketball IQ.

I know this is minor, but it bothers me when players don’t attempt the 3/4 court shot at the end of a quarter, like Williams just now. I mean, it’s not likely to go in, but you may as well toss it up. Why not?

The fear that Porzingis will be a terrible, Bargnani/Eddy Curry type rebounder seems to be unfounded. He’s a little overmatched right now trying to guard guys like Aldridge and Duncan one-on-one, but he looks like he belongs out there.

He’s a little overmatched right now trying to guard guys like Aldridge and Duncan one-on-one,

Didn’t look like it to me.

Knicks D has been fairly good. Clyde getting on Melo for getting scraped off on picks.
Melo can’t hit the ocean so far, but he needs to shoot. Wish zinger would be more careful. If he stays on the court he can be a huge impact. Watch Mr. Duncan, young fella. Decent match ups for our starting backcourt, but live the grant Galloway duo.

I can’t help but be amazed at how Phil built a good young team with 1 draft pick and Tim Hardaway Jr lol

Wow. This game turned bad quickly. Duncan took over. They don’t look tired at all.

I’m approaching this game like a Cuban Olympic coach. I’ll be happy as long as Zinger doesn’t defect.

Am I being too critical or does Melo seem completely out if sync?

Not too critical, but I’m sure he’ll pull it together by his mid-thirties. We’re in good shape, here.

Vujacic tries hard but has been terrible. Is it too obscure slash borderline misogynist to start calling him The Girlfriend Experience?

God, Melo is just not sharp. That last possession…he catches with 12 seconds. Tries to go one on one but is doubled and then trapped nearly throws it away.
2-9.
Lopez taking a few too many shots.
Spurs have just methodically taken the apart.

Lol I miss this game to game Melo judgement. The only bad play I saw from him was when he didn’t get back. The team can’t hit a shot right now (15-45)and Duncan is picking them apart. Melo is being guarded my the defensive Mvp of the NBA not sure if you guys knew that.

Nice to see you Jowels

Imagine how good the Knicks could be if Melo was a team-first guy? That’s the depressing part.

At the half it seems that the good guys were relying far too much on the jump shot when Grant, Williams and Porzingis had good success taking it to the rim. On defense the one glaring mistake that I see besides rebounding is allowing Duncan to hold the ball at the top of the key without a hand in his face until he finds his target back door. These are easily correctable but will they do it?

It’s true about Melo’s D tonight as well. He gets jammed by every pick.

Knicks just getting beat in every aspect of the game. Frankly, zinger has been the only bright light.

And O’Quinn. And D-Will around the rim.

@53 Melo has had a few good passes tonight. It’s amazing your ilk just ignores it. He’s selfish waaah waah. You guys might as well get your comments ready to copy and paste

I LOLed at this. I’m guessing this went over most peoples’ heads, which probably says good things about most of the people here.

Melo is not having a real good game by any stretch of the imagination but Triangle Magic™ looks like it’s kind of broken tonight. There have been some hilariously bad half court sets going on out there. There was one set where Melo and Robin Lopez collided into each other 20 feet away from the basket. I don’t think that’s how the spacing is supposed to work. The Knicks were holding their own in the first quarter because they had 0 turnovers, but in the second quarter they had 6 turnovers and looked very disjointed on both ends.

The good news: Melo leads the team in assists.
The bad news: Melo has two assists.

@57 Just because Melo makes a couple of good passes in the flow of a possession doesn’t erase his forcing numerous shots while double-teamed or not running back on defense.

ER
come on man. You never see a negative with Melo. He’s having a crappy night. You’d be more credible if you weren’t always the Melo attack dog on this blog.
He’s shot for shit. He got stuffed going 1 on 2, and while he lagged and bitched, Leonard drained a 3. He’s stuck like Velcro to every pick…every one he’s seen, and he’s bricking right now.
Now, I’m willing to say the dude needs to play back into this, but don’t throw shade at a guy because Melo has played like crap.
I guess I’m someone of a certain ilk…
Geez.

True. Zinger needs to stay on the floor. He’s having impact, but not long enough.

If Porzingis can hold his own against the Spurs I don’t really care what the rest of the team does.

Nah, Melo is a beast. Half a season is a lot to miss. He’s got to work through this.
He’s also basically adjusting to an entirely new team.

One thing that makes me happy about the Zinger is you get the impression he could be a very productive player even if he never becomes a dynamite scorer.

God how refreshing does it feel to have a player with “a future” on this team? When was the last time that was the case, in all seriousness? Danilo (kinda)? Ewing?

The Knicks are hanging in this because they’re holding their own on offense, but the defense is just brutal. Spurs have a 46-24 edge on points in the paint. The Knicks do not know how to fight through a screen to save their lives. The Spurs get easy looks every possession.

Still within striking distance. Need to make a run before Spurs get to deliver a knock out blow.

Trying to be patient with Melo here but some of these shots are just mind bogglingly dumb. Love Jerian tho!

Lamarcus Aldridge have been putting good number ever since.
Some people compare him to TD.
But I dont know but i was never a fan of his game.
Im still happy we didnt sign him.

Has Kawhi been primarily guarding Melo? I just got in. I see tubby finally got on the court

Yeah kawhi has been on Melo primarily he’s playing better than he was first half thank god

Nice job fighting back. D intensity upped.
Still some poor shot choices.
Got to give Melo a break to start the 4th.
Give DWill a run.

OK. Nice comeback.
Porzingis has 2 fouls left in him. At his 4.5 minutes per foul rate tonight, we should get 9 from him.
Anthony has to work very hard against Leonard who is just putting on a defensive clinic.
Oaq has been playing very tough.

Not bad through three quarters overall. The Knicks actually got their act together and defended pretty well the last handful of possessions, and they didn’t turn the ball over in the third quarter.

I appreciate the idea of working Seraphin into the lineup, but let’s get him out of there now.

this is gonna sound crazy but i think rubio may have turned himself into a near mvp level player

Just a question,
Is ZINGER the real nick name of pozringis?
Or Knickerblogger just gave that name to him?

It’s an old nickname that he hates.
He prefers KP and hopes one day to be KP6 – but he has to earn that.

It’s his real nickname.

maybe for once I will get some support when I say that Carmelo Anthony is terrible

I like to imagine the cockjowles sign appearing in the rain laden clouds over Portland the second Melo came down on Kristaps

why does melo have to be such a literalist. we mean your contract is weighing down the future of the franchise.

I’m standing outside in the rain looking to the sky saying, “finally, after decades of asking, you answer my prayers”

Spurs really put the clamps on. Still, fun to see Grant and big zingus flash some potential

Carmelo’s game has expanded beyond taking bad shots, not passing, and not defending, and now includes injuring his own teammates.

Game over as subs come in.
Man-for-man the Spurs starters are better than the Knicks.
Duncan > Lopez
Aldridge > Porizngis
Leonard > Anthony
Green > Vukacic
Parker > Calderon
Knicks shooting was off. Lot’s of credit to Spurs defense but still, the Knicks can shoot better.

Twolves are fun to watch. Hope they make the playoffs. For their Kids and KG.
Anyway, in the offseason i hope Jimmer F. will be our starting SG.
There’s a hope that i might just happen.

Knicks have a lot of fight this year which will help them beat bad teams, but Spurs are too good. Another building block hopefully Porzingis isn’t too hurt, suspect hell be out against Cleveland

I loved Zinger’s rebounding tonight!

This was a reasonable enough loss. Just keep developing, Zinger, Galloway and Grant!!

At least we’ll still be .500.

At least until Wednesday.

A shittier version of this team beat the Cavs last year, and that’s when they had Irving as their point guard and not Mo Williams!

i would do unspeakable things to get calderon traded for a league average point guard

Spurs D was too damn good. Lost to the better team but didn’t stop fighting. Liked that.
I was one of those who worried about Porzingis’ D, banging in the paint.
Not worried now. Very excited actually. He’s very good already. Future looks bright.

Calderon should not be starting. Fisher will see that with next 10 games

I don’t know why we have to wait, ya know?

Man, that looked scary. Hopefully he will just have a sore neck for a few days.

It really did look baaaad. But I think it really wasn’t that bad in the end.

I saw a lot of good things tonight. I think this team is near a 40 win team. I was joking earlier about starting Lance at the 2 but that might not be a bad idea. Move Early up to coming in as the 2nd string 3 and put Vujacic on the pine.

@147 I’m sure that was an honest mistake – wishing KG success on this board. Not really something you meant sincerely, like “I hope the NFL just finally leaves that wonderful Tom Brady fella alone.” Just the same, it would be nice if you could go back and edit that out so we can pretend it never happened.

Calderon should not be starting. …
I don’t know why we have to wait, ya know?

I want Grant to have time to develop against 2nd team point guards for a few more weeks. He’s been good offensively and just okay defensively. Calderon hit two big 3’s in the game and kept the game under control for a while.

I just watched the Dunk by Porzingis again, oh my. When he gets stronger the Unicorn will dominate.

I thought Grant looked really, really good tonight. Great penetration and finishing at the rim, solid decision making and only 1 turnover.

I am very high on this kid, what a heist we pulled with Atlanta.

It would have been a heist if he was just a mediocre player. What an awful trade by Atlanta. They would have had to be pretty awful drafters to pick someone with that pick who would have been worse than THJ.
