2014-15 Game Thread: Knicks vs. Pistons

Well, here we are. I was terrified of this game back when I thought a win here would only possibly end up with the Knicks tied with the Timberwolves. Instead, winning this game will very likely result in the Knicks tied with the Philadelphia 76ers for the second worst record in the NBA, resulting in splitting ping bong balls with the Sixers and then flipping a coin to determine which team is officially second and which team is officially third.

The third-worst record can finish as “high” in the draft as 6th.

So, yeah, this is a big game. A big game that there is no doubt whatsoever in my mind that the Knicks are going to try to win, and thus they likely will win it.

Because, well, Knicks.

Let’s go? Knicks?

  1. Fuck this game. If they win, I think Knickerblogger should go dark until the draft and only make posts complimenting franchises that actually make smart decisions.

I don’t know how Derek Fisher can let his ego and/or pride get in the way of making a simple decision that could mean the difference between a #1 pick and a fucking #6 pick. A god-damn moron.

In his case, I honestly think it’s a “character” issue. He’s of such high character, he can’t even conceive of the coach and players not going all out with whatever Jackson has given them.

My guess is that he feels this way even though the rules would allow him to play Ledo, Early, Thomas, Smith, and Acey for 48 minutes.

My guess is that he feels this way even though he knows other teams/coaches are in all out tank mode.

My guess is that he feels this way even though he knows the rules give him an incentive to not go all out.

My guess is that he feels this way even though he knows the league office, the commissioner, every sports writer, and 99.9% of all fans know that tanking is part of the sport.

It’s a double edge sword. I love the guy, but I hate him in this snapshot in time.

  3. I imagine Derek Fisher playing poker. Dude probably plays every hand and raises with a 2-7 off-suit because “we have no control over the [cards] and last I checked my job was to help us win.”

  4. MSG is committing a hate crime against math right now

I like Alan Hahn, but that was a dumb ass segment. Sometimes you simply have to stop toeing the company line and admit that winning those two games hurt the Knicks’ probabilities.

  5. I loves me some Alan Hahn, but obviously the guy is working under very specific circumstances, so you just have to keep that in mind. I don’t blame him for that, by the way. I’d work under those same circumstances in a heartbeat if I was him.

  6. He was looking at which teams got the number 1 pick to see what the best spot for the lottery would be. Finishing last doesn’t guarantee you the #1!

He also said we couldn’t pick lower than fifth.

  7. Miami: Ennis, Walker, Beasley, Johnson, Fucking Z Dragic

Philly: Covington, Grant, Simms, G Robinson, Sampson

  8. Here’s what I don’t get – the Wolves are masters of the tank, right? And they play Wiggins a lot of minutes every game, right? So why is getting so much hype when his team is mastering the tank with him leading the team in minutes?

  9. Despite a certain selfish dicknose scoring 14 points this has been a very solid quarter

  10. OKC scored 47 in the first quarter…

But the Pelicans are up 18 on the presumably-trying-to-win Spurs.

    Interesting

  11. Westbrook with 27 pts on 11 shots (in 15 minutes). Still 5 mins left in the 1st half.

  12. I almost want NO to lose if only to reward the crazy game Westbrook is having. Good God.

34 points on 16 shots. 6 boards and 4 assist at the half. Dude’s halfway to a 50+ point game and a triple double.

  13. Is LaVine guarding Russ? Its easy to score against a terrible team that probably isn’t trying at all

  14. Its easy to score against a terrible team that probably isn’t trying at all

(Yet somehow the Sixers won 18 games)

  15. (Yet somehow the Sixers won 18 games)

But they’ve also been an above average defensive team this season.

  16. The sixers got Embiid drawing up plays tonight. Hinkie is the tank don

Wait, seriously? Or is this a great DRed joke? Because if the former, sheeeeeeeeeeeeit

  17. Really hope Jackson does not learn that Beasley put up 34 tonight.
C’mon Philly you can do it!

  18. So what’s the western seeding going to be? (It’s all too close and confusing for me to figure out)

    GS-Houston-LA-Portland-SA-Memphis-Dallas-NO

That lA-Memphis series is going to be awesome.

  20. Thanks Vin–

I’m watching the Grizz game though and they just said that if the grizzlies win they get home court advantage in the first round, so presumably they are able to move into the 5Th spot, yes?

  21. So that’s it. Hopefully that will be the very last time we are debased to the point of rooting for opponents game after game.

I’m pretty OK with how things turned out. Odds of us getting 5th pick are about 1 in 8. We have a 38.7% chance of a top-2 pick, as opposed to a 46.5% chance for Minny. Even if we lost 1 more game, we would still be splitting the difference in these odds and would still have a chance of dropping to the 5th pick.

So I’ll just say it…to those who are pissed that we didn’t tank harder, let it go!

Didn’t notice that Memphis was still playing. If Memphis wins, which they currently are, they can tie SA. No idea who has the tie-breaker, they split the season series 2-2. If Memphis has the tie-breaker they move up to 5 and would play Portland. Memphis has a better record so I guess they would have home-court advantage even though Portland has a higher seed because they won their division. I forget how that works, I remember the NBA tweaked those rule several years ago but I don’t remember how; why would would a Knicks fan care about the rules for playoff seeding.

  23. Clippers vs the Spurs in the 1st round, WOW. All because of the stupid rule where a division winner can’t get worse than the 4th seed. Blazers should be 6th with Grizz-Spurs as the 4 vs 5 matchup.

  24. So that’s it. Hopefully that will be the very last time we are debased to the point of rooting for opponents game after game.

I’m a Knicks, Mets and Oakland Raiders fan. I’ve spent most of my adult life rooting for my teams to lose so they can get better draft position.

  25. GM ’16 DRed needs the Spurs to go out early so Cory Joseph can’t go Jerome James on someone

  26. Continuing from the previous thread:

    1. Completely eliminate trading of draft picks. Drafted players can’t be traded until they have been with the drafting team for one year.

    I think that’s a great idea by Z-man
