The Cronin jinx is alive and well. Hubert, you may not believe in it, but it’s real.

You’re right, I should have specified: I don’t believe in jinxes, except the Brian Cronin jinx. That shit’s real.

  2. Stratomatic "I'm tired of the Knicks paying lip service to DEFENSE. Get defenders & two-way players. Then play them!

I saw the early score of that game and was going to come here to brag that I called the Nuggets the biggest fraud in the playoffs before the games started. I changed my mind. Then I saw the final score. lol

  3. wetbandit

Did you guys see footage of our pal Donnie and his goons Rudy and Kavanaugh get their asses handed to them by Clinton while Sen. Paul, whip James and commentator Tucker mostly just threw feces? [Mitchell, Gobert, Cavanaugh, Capela, CP3, Harden, PJ]… I’ll show myself out, I’m sorry guys.

  4. geo

so what’s happened to russell westbrook and his shot?

why don’t the Lakers just hire lue and call it a day?

for the first time in a while, I’d take the field over the warriors…

  5. The Glass Half Rebuilt

I think SAS wins the series in 6 games and even gets passed Portland on their way to the NBA Finals. I’m not the biggest fan of DeRozan or LMA but Pop is the kind of coach who turns pumpkins into players, and he’s the only coach that I believe is as valuable as a franchise player. The Spurs are just the one team that won’t ever go away.

  6. swiftandabundant

What Bud has done with Giannis and The Bucks is impressive and I know Pop has won coach of the year before but this could be Pop’s masterpiece as far as getting the most out of his squad. Pretty much everyone has said this was FINALLY going to be the year The Spurs ended their playoff run and it even looked like that might be true early on in the season but he just knows how to put together the best system and game plan for whatever group of players he has and how to maximize them to get the most wins out of them.

I was never a fan of Cousins but man, that was hard to watch. I don’t think this will do too much damage to the Warriors though.

AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!! I just hung out and chatted with Mitchell Robinson, Damyean Dotson and Robert Horry!

    @11

    Please tell us more.

Re: Spurs. There’s a slight chance they can get to the West Finals, but then again, there’s a 100% chance that a non-contender shows up in the West Finals against the Dubs or the Rockets. I’m sad they lost against the Nuggets last night, but even if the Nuggets win the series 4-1 they need to be punching way higher than their weight to even get to the Conference Finals. Without a unconscious Murray they’d be poised to be last year’s Blazers.

so what’s happened to russell westbrook and his shot?

That’s an interesting question because he can’t shoot free throws anymore either. His 3 point percentage sucks this year, but it’s not that much below his ordinarily sucky career average, but his shooting numbers are all down everywhere else except at the rim. Maybe he’s got some nagging injury we don’t know about.

They were at a charity event at another entity nearby and I barged in. I told Mitch that he should read KB daily and that advanced stats judge him extremely favorably. Dotson was soooo humble at being recognized by me. Big Shot Bob with short hair looks so much like melo, I had to hear him speak to tell the difference. We spoke the longest. All of these guys have big freakin hands!!!

  19. Bruno Almeida

That’s so awesome Z-Man! How did Mitch react about the advanced stats, did he seem aware of them? I’m always super curious if there are players who pay as much attention to them as we do.

  20. bobneptune

All of these guys have big freakin hands!!!

I had a dear friend who was one of the best HS basketball players on Long Island in 1969 at Plainview named Larry Summer who played against Julius Erving a number of times as a teenager and remarked he was so good “because he could wrap his fingers around a basketball like you and I do around a softball.”

  21. Stratomatic "I'm tired of the Knicks paying lip service to DEFENSE. Get defenders & two-way players. Then play them!

I shit you not. Considering I had just returned from a shitty meeting with my boss, it was a very welcome surprise.

  24. Hubert

Owen, I’ve been a Spurs fan since 2004 (EDIT: Tottenham Hotspur, not San Antonio). We just went through to the Champions League Semi Final in the most unimaginable and unexpected way possible. I don’t know how that links up to the Knicks or NY sports in any way beyond myself, but I’m throwing it in the basket of positive events that lead me to believe something incredibly good is about to happen around here. Maybe it’s Durant, maybe it’s Zion, I don’t know. But I’ve been positive about something good happening here all year, even when everyone told me I was crazy for thinking anyone in their right mind would even consider coming here. So fuck Dolan’s Razor. Forget all jinxes (except the Cronin Jinx). I am visualizing the best summer in Knicks history, and it is fucking coming.

    Hubert – Folly

Not a Tottenham fan but a huge fan of every kind of international and European footy since I was a kid and lived in Spain in 1990 during the first US World Cup.

That was an all timer. VAR is stupid but they got it right.

  26. Hubert

BTW, Owen, City play Spurs Saturday morning in the league. What a crazy way to follow that up, eh?

  27. dtrickey

VAR is stupid but they got it right.

VAR has to be one of the most frustrating processes/systems in world sport.

On the topic of San Antonio, they are paying $26.00 with local bookies here in Australia to make it out of the West. As good as Pop has been this year, I think Denver still gets them in the 1st round, but they are pretty tasty odds to have a cheeky flutter on.

Also, Mitch Rob, if you are reading this after meeting Z-Man, please know you are the best thing to happen to the Knicks in a long time and we love your work ha ha

  28. Stratomatic "I'm tired of the Knicks paying lip service to DEFENSE. Get defenders & two-way players. Then play them!

Perry and Mills were encouraging today. It sounds like they are open to anything other than signing the wrong players for too much money because of expectations. The key being their ability to identify “wrong”.

“It also gives us the opportunity that if things don’t happen in free agency, we’re sticking to our plan. We’re not going to sign the wrong players just because we have room and the fans have great expectations. They should have expectations we make the right decisions. It gives us the opportunities to eventually explore trades and take guys into [that] room.”

  29. Brian Cronin

I like that we’re still the ESPN Knick blog affiliate, so it’s easier to explain us to someone who doesn’t know the blog, like Mitch.

  30. rama got that Fizdale Magic

Put a link to the thread, Brian. Unlikely, but why not?

Of course, he’d also see we were not as excited about another player we drafted…maybe better not to lead him to that after all….

  31. Bruno Almeida

Damn, I thought the Jazz and Rockets series would be interesting, but I guess Harden just can’t be stopped, what a first half. 25/7/7 and he straight up embarrassed Rubio a couple of times.

  32. Owen Post author

I think Spurs play Man City three times in two weeks, right?

    Mitch WE LOVE YOU!

I think we should have an open thread just for testimonials of our love for Mitch….

    That what you thinking Brian?

    :-)

  33. Stratomatic "I'm tired of the Knicks paying lip service to DEFENSE. Get defenders & two-way players. Then play them!

Utah clearly needs another TWO scorers to become a serious contender, but I thought their defense would at least make these games interesting. Houston seems to have gotten healthy at exactly the right time, but I still don’t think they are as good as last year. Paul has been playing a little better down the stretch, but I don’t think he’s at his peak level anymore, they’ve lost some depth, and Nene is not what he used to be off the bench either.

  34. geo

maybe mitch will google knickerblogger, see our current thread title and think we’re all really cool…

i don’t know though, i’m old – is fresh a cool word still…is cool still a cool word?

  35. Mike Honcho

@51 The current vernacular is your choice ‘hella chill’, ‘fuqin lit’ or ‘got that big dick energy’.

  36. bobneptune

Utah clearly needs another TWO scorers to become a serious contender, but I thought their defense would at least make these games interesting.

If you shoot 8-38 from 3 vs Houston the ’85 Bears defense would have no chance against them. If Ingles, Mitchell and Korver shoot 2-15 from three that will be that.

For all the hype that Donovan Mitchell got last year he has made zero progress between his rookie season and this year and is wildly overrated. He is a league average player who plays in a great team concept team. Rubio is so pitiful from the outside he is an embarrassment and doesn’t need to be defended. I do not understand how a career 85% FT shooter can shoot 31% from 3pt range 8 seasons into an NBA career……

  37. Frank

Trying to read the tea leaves re: the FO’s plans for the offseason —

That was a pretty good interview by Michael Kay and co. with Perry/Mills. The one “young player” that they basically didn’t even talk about was DSJ. And they are continuing to beat the drum that Frank is still valuable especially on a team that might have elite offensive guys that can let Frank by the low-usage Frank he wants to be. Maybe the deal is that if KD/Kyrie or whoever Kd’s running mate might be is a high-usage lead ballhandler (ie. Kemba) then they’ll trade DSJ. It really would be useful to have that 4+MM off the cap so we can sign some other vets. Perhaps give DAJ the room exception (not sure Mitch/Kornet are ready yet for playoff basketball, and maybe on a real contending team and with fewer minutes DAJ will be more motivated and show some of his previous defensive chops). Bring Trier back on his team option. I’d be partial to bringing Vonleh and even Lance Thomas back as well, mostly to give some guys who can credibly guard Giannis – those guys probably are both vet’s minimum guys, maybe a little more for Vonleh. (Actually what am I talking about – Zion can guard Giannis!!)

So that might give us a team that looks like this:

Guards: Kyrie, Frank, Trier, Dotson, Kadeem Allen
Forwards: KD, Knox, Zion of course, Vonleh, Lance
    C: DAJ, Mitch, Kornet

that’s not a bad mix of young guys and vets. I think it’d all fit under the cap if we can move on from at least one of DSJ or Frank. I would actually not mind trading both since I think Kadeem Allen can do some of what Frank does defensively while being better offensively, and we prob need a little more shooting.

Can anyone please provide a link to the interview?

  39. Brian Cronin

I just don’t see the room exception reasonable to expect from a guy who made $20 million this year. Now, if they could trade enough guys to free up, say, $8-10 million, I could see it. But less than $5 million? Seems like a stretch.

That’s exactly the right thing to do.

If they sign Durant and either Kyrie, Kemba, or draft Ja Morant, DSJ becomes superfluous. He still has more trade value than Frank. They should cash that chip in and give Frank the time to develop into a player that would compliment those other players perfectly. If Frank busts out, so be it. I’d rather take a shot on the younger player that could fit perfectly and get something else of value in a trade than than have DSJ on the bench.

    #52

The Jazz gave up 122 and 118 point to the Rockets.

Granted, the Rockets can be a juggernaut, but when your team identity is defense and that’s what you are counting on to keep you competitive, you are stinking out the joint.

Their offense is their offense. It’s not very good. I like Mitchell more than you do, but he sure as hell is not good enough to carry an offense.

I like Mitchell just fine…. but he is what his record says he is according to Bill Parcells until he proves differently. Same goes for Frank.

A huge part of their 20 point deficit in the first quarter (39 pts against) were SEVEN mostly unforced turnovers which gave Houston a gaggle of extra possessions while the Jazz were shooting ice cold. Long rebounds/semi fast breaks and wide open 3’s made for it getting late early!

They only turned the ball over 5 times the last 3/4 and played them even up the last 36 minutes…..

You can’t give Houston extra possessions at home and escape.
