youre forgetting that cp3 wants nothing to do with being on the east coast and never has so in addition to not starting he would either have to move his family across country for a reserve role or be away from them for most of the year seems unlikely also not sure why you think hed take the vet minimum for this role and this location that he doesnt want

Yeah, CP3 ain’t happening for all the reasons Doogie says.

Recently, the only names Begley — the most plugged in beat writer by far — has mentioned are Simmons and Shamet, and Bondy (I think) said Simmons is a no go. So it sounds like it might just be Shamet by default?

I was kind of tempted by Simmons. Even though he’s not a scorer, he’s both a backup big and a point guard, which is nice flexibility. And I would be hoping that being in a better organization than the 76ers with Doc Rivers would help him get his head together.

I actually did the literally impossible once long ago, which is I fixed a girlfriend’s deeply emotionally fucked up problems. From a complete sociopath to a delightful human. I should probably be in a textbook somewhere. Then she left me.

Not holding out for Ben to ‘get better.’

(Especially in NY, where people are super-respectful and given to being ultra supportive in words and print…)

thats how it generally goes raven you show them the right way to act and then they take what they learned and are much better for the next person sorry it happened to you that way

    #delon

Can you just imagine the James Edwards III storyline?

“Don’t Worry Ben, You’ll Make the Layup Next Time”

Ben Simmons’ blown layup at the end of regulation leading to a one-point loss to the Celtics is just another example of our shared human frailty…”

CP3 would obviously be great but yeah we don’t have to discuss it. I’d probably lean Simmons over Wright even though Wright can shoot a little bit. Simmons is a lot younger and more versatile defensively, and we should be able to put more shooting on the floor in general this season such that we can cover for a non-shooter.

File all of this under “probably noise, but it’s July so fuck it,” but there are some interesting Simmons related stats:

-He made BKN’s offense about 5 PTS/100 better

-BKN’s AST/100 went from 25.4 to 28.8 with him on the floor

-BKN’s percentage of assisted at-rim shots went from 55% to 65% with him on the floor

-BKN’s 3PT% went from .335 to .382 with him on the floor, their above-the-arc percentage specifically increased from 33% to 39%, and their percentage of above-the-arc 3PM that were assisted went from 85% to 90%

I’m not nearly self-loathing enough to watch 2024-2025 Brooklyn Nets tape, but it seems like he still has a knack for finding shooters. Definitely works for me with a vet-min slot.

Thanks, Noble. I’m not terribly surprised as Simmons still clearly has some real skills — well, I’m very surprised at the 3pt improvements you note, given that he’s a 14% shooter from there and, you know, spacing, at a minimum.

Hey, if we got Ben I’d root for him. Seems like a nice guy. I might give up playing with lineup configurations, however, as even now trying to imagine what they might look like causes my brain to slip off the idea like it was a soap-covered slide…

For me, the concern about Simmons at the minimum is mostly about two things: his physical health and his locker room presence. I’m not worried about his mental health on the court as it pertains to making or missing shots, because he’s a vet’s minimum player who can be benched, waived, or traded. If he isn’t a cancer and is reasonably healthy, he can eat 1000 minutes and be a pretty good stand in for a 6-week injury issue to pretty much any rotation player.

I’m guessing there’s a good chance he doesn’t want to play for the Knicks or the Lakers (a theoretically excellent fit) because unlike the Nets and Clippers, where no one really gives a shit, he would be under intense scrutiny.

Apparently he (Simmons) is also being considered by Sacramento. He will probably get more playing time there so it might be better for him

Doubt Ben signs with us. But if he does I would love it— means he buys into Brown, buys into NYK big scrutiny, and thinks he can contribute on a contender.

…. and our medical team, which seems to be good, gave his back the all clear.

We got MoDia playing. Nnaji, Kolek, Watson and Beauchamp also starting

Diawara with a nice post reverse pivot baseline move, layed it in. He’s mostly deferring, making the easy pass. Not being challenged on D.

Diawara with a pull-up 3! Then a steal and a quick pass to Nnaji who botched it but got bailed out.

Yeah, Nnaji is Nnot very good. Still liking what I see of Diawara.

    Kolek being fairly mid.

Diawara with a crossover lefty drive, too hard off the glass, then a terrible hook pass.

    Kolek!

You mean if Anton Watson was 7′ 2″?

I’d have a chance at the NBA at that height…

I’m starting to wonder if Anton Watson could play in the NBA if he was only 6’8″…

So Pate and McCullar get two of the two-way spots, and maybe Diawara gets the rookie minimum spot on the main roster? If so, who’s the last two-way?

I think we should use the NBA spot on Pate, so nobody pries him away. Diawara has to sign with us anyways.

    FROM SHAMS:

BREAKING: Marcus Smart has agreed to a contract buyout with the Washington Wizards and intends to sign a two-year, $11 million deal with the Los Angeles Lakers after clearing waivers, sources tell ESPN. A return to a grand stage for the 2022 NBA Defensive Player of the Year.

    Tyler Kolek this summer:

    11.8 points per game
    32% FG
    17% three
    5 assists
    4 turnovers

Doesn’t seem all that good. Lack of athleticism is definitely an issue

-on the positive side , Dink has the tools to be a player down the road in the NBA. Could be developed as a wing

If he’s on a two-way, no one can sign him away.

We need to convince Pate to sign first. If another team likes him, they can offer him the minimum.

That seems like a good pickup for the Lakers if Smart can still provide good defense

    Shams Charania
    @ShamsCharania

    Shams Charania
    @ShamsCharania
The Lakers, Phoenix Suns and Milwaukee Bucks all seriously pursued Smart

Leon couldn’t compete money wise with the Leakers.

Smart might be washed but even if he isn’t he makes more sense as the new Derek Fisher than backing up JB

I think we have a solid 9-man rotation with no real minutes for a 10th man. Wright or Shamet work for me. Otherwise, they could just roll with the kids.

Seems like the Lakers are using an amount pretty clost to the TPMLE to sign him, no? I’m assuming that everyone here would rather have Yabu than Smart, right?

I once liked Marcus Smart, but he’s old, never could and still can’t shoot, and has likely lost a step. Plus he’s short. It’d be a bad fit.

I still haven’t seen Yabusele play, but a Precious who can hit threes makes a hell of a lot of sense. In general and for the Knicks right now.

yabu is gonna get sooooooo much garden love…him, josh and deuce make for a nice bench…need to see clarkson in action with this group…

gonna be bummed if the plan is to play OG another season at the four…KAT starting at center 👎

That seems like a good pickup for the Lakers if Smart can still provide good defense

fakers have 2 really good players, reaves and not a lot more…lots of bargain basement ball players…newbie coach still…

luka and lebron will both probably miss like 20 games each…

no doubt cdiggy will have a much better time next nba season than his faker fan faculty friends…

We are all going to be Dinkastated if we don’t sign him.

I will be a patetic mess

    3

I think summer league is one reason we still have two roster spots to fill. How could one predict that Pate would be more appealing to sign than, say, Nnaji. Summer league gives you some information on how to fill the end of your bench.

I don’t know how I’m going to contain my emotions if a player named Dink Pate manages to play meaningful minutes for the Knicks

    1

Hey man, Pate was the 30th-ranked prospect in his high school class (2023). Dink’s no slouch.

One concern with Dink is that he can’t finish at all with his left hand. As scoring wings go, in most cases, this significantly lowers a non-elite defender’s ceiling. There are a few exceptions, Manu being the most notable one (although I think lefties have an inherent advantage in this regard. RJ was very left-hand dominant, and still is to a degree, but he’s obviously worked very hard on his right-hand finishing and has improved quite a bit.)

Dink looked pretty darned athletic out there, but his combine measurements were not all that impressive. He had a 24.5″ standing vertical, a 32.5″ max vertical, and was unimpressive in the 3/4 court sprint.

I would be happy to have him on a 2-way, but it would probably be a waste to offer that rookie deal to him. He needs a LOT of work. Now he’s only 19, so there’s definitely a chance for development, and the dunks both in summer league and in his G-League highlights suggest that his vertical is better than what they were measured at. And who knows, maybe he’s still growing!
