So much for Josh Hart, power forward. The US team was killed on the boards today.
Hart and Barrett need to split 12 minutes of PF time. If teams go big and they aren’t up to the task (they mostly will be, but I digress), there are options like Sims, Roby and Knight. Vet’s minimum guys like Taj will be available on the waiver wire. Others will shake loose as rosters tighten. We could use picks to acquire a backup PF.
This will be true even if Randle goes down for a bunch of games, although that loss will be hard to bear, as it would for any team losing an all-NBA player. But that’s the beauty of having trade assets.
Todays game definitely sounds like it was NOT a proof of concept for giving Hart tons of minutes at the 4.
The problem really only comes up
If iron man Randle misses significant time. I think Hart will do just fine playing backup PFs. But if he has to start at that position for an extended period, we could have big worries.
Is anyone surprised by this?
I’ve been saying from day one we need a backup PF with some size. Hart is undersized at SF. So there are definitely going to be nights where the matchup is bad at PF, especially if Randle is out.
Not a great look, but JJJ had 0 rebounds so it wasn’t just Hart at least
I’ll reiterate that few NBA PFs are big, bruising rebounders. Montenegro started a very big front line that I doubt Hart will see much of in the NBA.
We played Obi at the 4 last year and he barely ever rebounded.
I don’t love our lack of length in general. And I’m not super psyched about playing Sims or the other end of roster dreck for significant minutes at PF considering the spacing issues that would create on the other side of the ball.
Our roster construction isn’t ideal. I mean we should be pretty good anyway but these little things at the margins are annoying. Why did we trade Obi for nothing exactly?
The important thing here is that we did Obi Toppin a solid. Focusing on the roster problems created by that solid misses the big picture, and that is that one day our reputation for doing favors is going to help us solve a roster problem, just not the roster problem we created by doing this favor.
This is why the Boston Celtics are never any good, btw. They’ve developed a terrible reputation — Red Auerbach to Danny Ainge — for only ever do what’s best for the team. That’s why they haven’t been able to acquire good players for the last 50 years, and are a model for bad management.
Lastly, to suggest that nepotism had anything to do with this is just cynical. I know Leon’s son could make millions if Obi is able to parlay a good year in Indiana into a second contract, but come on. Leon is a fiduciary. He wouldn’t do that.
rj and dillon brooks were both rough today for canada. spain vs canada for survival now.
We traded Obi Toppin for nothing because it would be hard to justify starting the luxury tax clock this season and I say that as someone wholly unsympathetic to James Dolan in every way imaginable.
The repeater penalties get onerous enough that even Ballmer hemorrhaged Eric Gordon for literally nothing, so it’s not like this stuff has no basketball impact.
I am wholly unworried, even somewhat excited, about our small-at-the-four roster construction…if Julius Randle is healthy. But that’s a massive “if,” and it starts to look very shaky if he has to miss time.
Obi did very little for us during his time here because Randle was an iron man, but he’s about as good as it gets in terms of Randle insurance.
12-14 minutes a game of Hart or RJ at the 4 is perfectly fine with me, again I’m actually excited for it. 48 minutes is a very different story and the prospect makes me hope against hope Roby or Knight can emerge.
Seeing RJ shoot 1/8 against one of our weakest brazilian teams in recent memory is the only thing that could sour a bit this huge win for us.
Kevin Knox is still available (ducks, runs, hides, etc.)
Wow, a number of upsets today
Jean Montero’s DR team (sure KAT put up 39 but we know who the alpha is) lost to Puerto Rico who doesn’t have any names I recognize beyond Tremont Waters and I’m not entirely sure why I ever cared enough to know of him.
Where have people been watching replays of the games? Might check out the USA game to see how bad Hart looked
hi EB, the usa games show on ESPN 2 and they are on demand/live on ESPN plus…
i’m not even sure where montenegro is…looking at the names of the players – I’m guessing somewhere in the balkans…
just finished the first quarter, jalen and josh looked fine…jalen played well on both ends actually…
antman is a turnover machine…
they just showed some stat that had usa as one of the teams that passes the ball the least…
it shows, these other team really move the ball well in order to get open shots…usa does a lot of one on one stuff…
good game so far…
I’m a big fan of jjj – the usa though could really use a big guy that can score and pass from the post…
I don’t think we have one of those in the country though…
Dang, Brooklyn signed Harry Giles (not Styles) to a prove-it contract. I’m starting to really like that team, especially if Simmons can get back to his dominant point-guard form. Lots of long, young defenders. They could give us trouble.
Alan, it looks like you watched a few episodes of One Piece. Don’t worry, it gets better after the first 30 episodes before getting actually good somewhere between episodes 250 and 500… or so I’m told
My kingdom for gif powers right now, EB.
Hard to come up with an appropriate analogy for how big that If may be…
I think one of the reasons the US passes so little compared to other teams is that they score so many fast break points. There fast break is very effective, so that is a good reason.
I’m drinking a Pilsner from my brother-in-law’s old brewery and staring at the Statue of Liberty from the bar at Manhatta right now. Who’s up?
There is only one bar in all of Manhatta?!? I’m surprised to hear that.
This bar is not for you, rube
Jasson Dominguez is already the greatest CF in Yankees history.
Obi couldn’t rebound either.
It’s the one bar in Manahatta.

Good one, Jowles.
Manhatta has created some of my favorite drinks, if only for their names:
– Look to the Cookie
– Mistakes Were Made
– Pollen Oates
If you are still in NY tomorrow I would be down for a drink.
Got a wedding, will advise what happens after
Not really *that* good.
And: “Mannahatta,” not “Manahatta.” It’s right there in the link itself. 🙂
