Kevin Durant was among four members of the Brooklyn Nets who tested positive for the coronavirus, the superstar told The Athletic.
The team announced Tuesday that multiple players were diagnosed with the deadly virus, without disclosing names.
“Of the four, one player is exhibiting symptoms while three are asymptomatic,” the team added in a statement. “All four players are presently isolated and under the care of team physicians.”
Hopefully the player who is showing symptoms is doing okay.
There’s really nothing to be gleamed from this other than the fact is that there are probably a LOT of people out there that have COVID-19 without us knowing about it, which is precisely why the cancellations have been so important.

other than the stores clearing out – doesn’t really seem like things have changed much here in the inland empire (around san bernardino) other than schools closing…riverside, next closest large city has made it carry out and delivery only for restaurants…no business closings though…
it feels a bit like waiting for a storm to hit…
This is total conjecture. While I saw lots of morons in my social media out drinking at bars and having brunch all weekend, we have no idea how they contracted it, just like how Donovan Mitchell may well have given Gobert the virus in the first place.
This is why we need to lean on people right now to make smart decisions. Hundreds of thousands will die and those brunch-goers and bar-hoppers will think they did nothing wrong because it is largely untraceable (unless you are a cruise patron or in isolation with a person who is not following self-quarantining guidelines).
Here in Knoxville, schools are now cancelled until at least April 3. Traffic out here in west Knoxville is definitely down a bit, and has been for several days. We’re going out only to get groceries.
Our new kitchen cabinets and all are scheduled to be shipped this coming Friday (we paid for and ordered them in January), so in the next few weeks we’ll have various contractors scheduled to come out here and do work in our kitchen and dining room.
As of right now, my wife may have to continue to go in to work even though most of her co-workers may soon be working at home.

I realize my initial post may have come off overly harsh and critical, but 4 players is a cluster. That means they almost certainly got it together. It doesn't matter who got it first or if they got separately at the same location. It's not random.
It has been 6 days since the Gobert news broke and all hell broke loose around the country.
For all I know they got it on their road trip in CA. It's just seems like the most likely scenario is that they got infected after the Gobert news broke because 3 of the players don't have symptoms yet (Durant among them) and the incubation period 3-14 days with 5ish being average.
Maybe the NBA should have told all the players to self quarantine instead of just the ones that might have had contact with Gobert or the Pistons. It may not have mattered in this case, but it may have. Celebrities do more traveling, sign autographs, shake hands with fans, and when/if they practice basketball together, they sweat on each other and all touch the ball.

Strat – I don’t think the Nets had any contact with the Pistons or Jazz recently. There is some thread up on twitter about this. Not going to post it because I can’t vet it myself and I hate posting stuff that turns to have been bunk later 😉 but the idea is that it appears that a lot of NBA players have it or have had it and were asymptomatic. As THCJ said, there is really no way to know who is patient zero.

I went grocery shopping today. Not much in the way of meat. I was able to get all the produce I wanted. No eggs but I got those at another store. I actually got everything in the list and scored some extra brown rice and beans!
Got back from the local Food City, which was well-stocked at the end of last week. Totally or nearly out of all bread, milk, toilet paper (totally out), hamburger, rice, lentils, noodles, etc. Stores around here are closing early. Very very little traffic. This is usually busy west Knoxville.
My wife is going to be one of 5 out of about 100 people Navistar does not want to send home to work. She’s fine with that as it is just an office, no contact with general public. Gonna be a couple of managers and three other people, one of them being her. She’s a certified Notary, so I guess they need her in the office daily. My response to her about that: “They need to pay you more.”

Here in suburban NJ, our kids are on “At-Home Learning” for at least two weeks, and likely a lot longer than that. In the last few days, I’ve only gone out for supplies, and am ordering as much online as I can.
Yesterday, the local Shop Rite was picked clean of meat and low on fruits and veggies, but was good on virtually everything else. They’re rationing certain things, limiting how much bottled water or Lysol spray you can buy, for instance. I did my best to avoid other shoppers as much as possible, then wound up in line behind an old woman who was carrying on business as usual and had a LOT of coupon concerns. She could sense my impatience and said to the cashier, “I know he’s in a hurry. All the young people are.” And it was all I could do to stop myself from yelling, “There’s a pandemic, ma’am, and you’re much more at risk from it than I am, so maybe we should all get in and out of here as quickly as we can!”
Meanwhile, one of my sisters is on chemo with a suppressed immune system, and is terrified of going to the hospital and being exposed. She went for her infusion yesterday, told the doctor that she’d had a sore throat lately, and instead of giving her her meds, they gave her a test for the virus and sent her home.
Sorry man. I know a lot of people who are young and high risk. It’s terrifying. Chemo, CF, Hodgkins Lymphoma, asthma. Not just old people.

The I-405 yesterday looked like your average American interstate highway on any given day non-rush hour (the LA folks here know how startling that is). My fiancee’s commute (don’t worry she’ll be telecommuting soon) has been cut down more than half, from 90-120 minutes to 35.
We hit up Sam’s Club and Food4Less yesterday. Sam’s had a line to reduce the number of shoppers inside (a fight had broke out earlier and the sheriff had to clear everybody out). A lot of the chicken got cleaned out but we were able to still get ground beef, bread and most other items we were looking for.
Food4Less is a bit more harrowing because damn near all of the fresh fruits and veggies had been cleared out. Ditto for many frozen foods and milk.
I’m grateful for us being able to stock up and not having to worry about loss of wages. I’ve spoken to a couple of coaches at my college to let them know that if they have any players that suffer from food insecurity that they can come over for a meal.
But comfy with a thin piece of tissue the only barrier between your hand and… y’know? And then being around people who just did the same, whose hygienic routines you have no control over? We have different comfort thresholds. : )

In recent days, I’ve published some suggestions of shows to binge while quarantined, and a rave review of Brockmire, which returns for its final season tonight.
so, for about the last half dozen years or so i’ve been on a mission to downsize and get more crap out of the house…smaller more easily movable furniture, getting rid of old clothes/equipment and clearing out closets and the garage, heck clearing out my fridge and pantry to simply maintain a 2 week or so supply of food stuffs…
this situation has triggered me in ways i hadn’t expected…challenge accepted to see whom can stockpile and hoard the most – i’m there…
really wish i could just stay home for a couple of days to organize and clean…still working and running errands during the week; and, have either one or both of the boys over on the weekends; i usually wave the white flag when they’re there and simply focus on looking after them and relaxing myself…god daughter is staying with me now (trying to teach her about the potential scarcity of resources) fairly low maintenance…
i would really like though to just focus on cleaning and organizing my house for awhile…i’d prefer not to use any of my paid time off right now to do it, just in case…
i am thankful for the opportunity to come to work…in my particular department, we have a much older workforce (it’s a good company and work environment, unless they’re retiring nobody really leaves) we’ve spread ourselves out and our being as safe as possible…
sunday though was doing something and suddenly realized – the potential for us to be sent home here is increasing…which made me suddenly think – man, i need more weed!!!

In Israel we have about 450 carriers of the virus, zero deaths so far and pretty much everything is shut down. While this is going on:
1. The courts were closed last week (I already mentioned it here) two days before Bibi’s bribery trial was scheduled to start.
2. A few nights ago, literally in the middle of the night, the government authorized our security forces to get “any technical data” from people’s phones, if they are diagnosed as virus carriers. I don’t think there’s one person in this country who believes the security apparatus would not abuse their authority and listen to everyone they want.
3. The parliament chair refused to allow voting today. The PM’s party doesn’t have a majority, so it effectively closed down parliament.
4. None of the news outlets reports the political situation with any clarity. The fact that the prime minister now has absolute power over everything in this country is hushed. People on Twitter, and to a lesser extent on FB do report and discuss this.
Having to deal with the Corona virus AND the destruction of our democracy is really too much. It’s totally fucked up.

This is where your drug of choice doesn't help. I took a 10mg time release adderrall yesterday and I cleaned the fuck out of my apartment. Emptied every drawer and closet. Eliminated 1/3 of my possessions, put another 1/3 in storage, now I don't know what to do with all these empty drawers and shelves.

okay, so here’s the deal…i myself started watching and gave up TWICE during watching the first two episodes of the series…it just seemed like some weak gladiator and 300 ripoff…

andy whitfield was simply amazing – stunning individual to look at, but, even more so was able to convey just how flipping crazy the character was…
what really turned things for me was not only the acting of lucy lawless, but – john hannah’s performance as Lentulus Batiatus, which to me is every bit as impressive as ian mcshane playing al swearengen…
just some real next level stuff…it’s funny, it’s also got that weird shakespearean lilt (all the characters use it) to it that al swearengen used in deadwood…
gods of the arena – was okay…john hannah and lucy lawless were once again perfect…season 2 of spartacus unfortunately though may have been the worst tv ever…season 3 they shuffled the cast and were able to raise the quality up a good bit…
Just got back from vacation in the Florida Keys. Emptiest flight I’ve ever been on, maybe 25 passengers out of 150 seats. Key West was a pretty somber place the past few days, a whole lot of residents are very nervous about their livelihoods. I don’t think this country is prepared for how bad this pandemic is going to hurt everyone.

There's no question the economy is going to contract at a depression level rate this quarter. The question is whether this virus turns into a 2-3 month disaster or a lot longer. If it's just 2-3 months we'll probably bounce back quickly after that. If it turns into a 12-18 month disaster, we are probably in for some very hard times.
You also have to wonder what this does for the election if the virus is still circulating strong. I'm in NY. So my vote is basically irrelevant anyway. I'd just skip voting for the first time, But in swing states it could be dicey. It even calls into question whether we can have an election if the virus is still going strong.
i just got off of an internal call at my firm where the chief economist gave their view…recession and then possible recovery starting Q4 2021….the last briefing was about a month ago with a very quick recovery…like by Q4 2020…so the shit turned very quickly….

Honestly, I'm a pretty "find the downside kind of guy", but he's talking about a 21 month recession. That seems very unlikely to me. Business actively has come to a screeching halt. Once it declines that sharply, there has to be a modest bounce back even with any improvement in the virus situation. However, I would definitely agree that we won't get back to the same level of GDP and employment we were at before this for quite a long time.

So the thousands of restaurants and bars and small businesses of any other type are just going to pick up where they started? Best case is they get cheap money from the bank to stay afloat and then jack up prices to help pay off what they needed to borrow to stay in business. Higher prices mean ________. Or they just don’t come back at all. Banks left holding their dicks as small business owners default en masse, for one.

I think I can handle all this economic turmoil. That's the one upside of getting old. It means you've already worked for a very long time and hopefully have a nest egg to get you through a tough period. I do. I have to thank my mom and dad for teaching me avoid borrowing and to save something for a rainy day because of our shared experience being poor and our grandparents experience in the depression after coming here from Italy.
However, I can't handle this virus stuff at all. Truthfully, I'm scared shitless about being able to go out and shop, getting sick, getting my medicines, taking care of my mom and brother without exposing them or myself etc.. I'm overwhelmed.
I did an inventory on my meds. I have 3 months worth of blood pressure meds (which should be fine because I have a mild problem and take a very low dosage) and 3 weeks of Xanax (which is not fine). I'm trying to communicate with my doctor to make an exception and give me a longer than typical prescription given the circumstances, but so far not luck, He's probably got bigger fish to fry than some anxious weenie like me. 🙂

Smaller family run restaurants and bars are one business. IMO, many will go under. If we keep them afloat long enough to not have to close the doors permanently right away, when they reopen, they’ll be lucky to get back a decent percentage of their business because so many other people will be out of work or afraid to go out in public places. They aren’t going to be able to price gauge even if they want. No one will go. People will cook or drink at home. Those businesses will fight to survive. Some will make it, others will close, new ones will spring up over time. That’s why it takes so long to get back to where you were after a contraction like this.
Most of the very large chains should survive this. Maybe a few have bad balance sheets and will crack, but I don’t know specifics.

We ordered new cabinets in January and lined up various contractors, and the cabinets are finally going to ship this Friday. I've been wondering the same thing, but logically since it's a new virus you first have to develop a test and then get the needed materials to manufacture the tests. That takes some time, We also had some delays because at first the CDC would not approve some of the good private tests that were developed by major companies. That has since been corrected and now they are ramping it up.
As far as testing NBA players goes, I'm calling it "rich dunker privilege".
Like, if all it takes is money to get Rudy Gobert a ten minute covid-19 test…. How about spending money on that instead of losing ten times as much bc we’re all out business?
There was a developed test (probably more than one) but we chose not to use it and developed our own instead. I assume the reason was profit, but I’m just basing that on being a cynic.
The existing tests were developed in other countries. Using one of them would mean allowing immigration (of tests) and obviously we couldn’t allow that.
That’s a great question. But, we’ve already paid 60% down on the cabinets/counters/sink/installation (in January), and the rest is due when they arrive next week. I guess we could ask them to hold everything in a warehouse or whatever, but for how long? Might as well just go ahead and try to get everything done as quickly as possible, before the virus hits our area. I’ll ask our various contractors their opinions, but I bet they all want to get their jobs done and get paid. We plan to ask what precautions they will take.
So far, still just 1 real reported case in Knoxville, and that guy has been known about for several days. We’re very lucky around here so far.
Probably just 2-3 guys going in and out per day (demo, cab install, electrical, counters/sink, floors). We plan to have them use the back patio door to come in and out, and they’ll just be in the kitchen and dining room. If this all goes through, I’ll be here every day to monitor (from a distance) and wipe down.

Meanwhile my roommate, who works for a fucking advertising company, has not been sent home yet. He does the kind of work that can’t be done remotely (basically physically preparing surfaces for ads) but it’s still enraging, especially considering the entire office staff has been sent home.
He just got the job about a week before the emergence of COVID-19 and is really excited about it, so it’s hard for me to be too angry with him for not jeopardizing it by just staying home himself. Still, completely irresponsible behavior on the part of his employer.
It makes me feel so helpless. I take drastic social distancing measures every day and then my roommate, who has traversed boroughs and worked a 12+ hour day, comes home to our tiny East Village apartment.
TNFH — you raise a really interesting point. Is he working solo? is he avoiding people when he’s out? Nothing wrong with being outside, if you keep your distance. Probably good for you mentally and emotionally. Where i am the streets are empty. Don’t know what kind of surfaces he’s touching though, and/or if he’s wearing gloves while working. It could be fairly benign or really dangerous, depending.

I know a guy who’s still commuting into Manhattan from Jersey daily. He’s running the backend that let’s everybody else work remotely. From his pics the trains are basically empty. I think it’s probably fine to be out if you have a job that requires it since so few people are out. Just bedeck yourself appropriately with the CV accouterments.
He bikes to work even when the weather is shitty to avoid the subway and he doesn’t work with many other people. He says they have people taking care to disinfect surfaces, etc.
Personally, I still see way too much that could go wrong to justify this in such a non-essential field. It truly only takes one small mistake by one person to wreak serious havoc.

Testing all the NBA players (at two tests each to eliminate false positives as folks seem to have been doing) would take about a thousand tests. Well within the reach of the NBA to order those from overseas somewhere. Mass testing takes a lot more than just money.

i’m starting to get resentful of showing up at work, started getting a little anxious and just left work yesterday…i just feel like i need a few days at the house to take stock of what i have and may need, run whatever necessary errands need to be run…after that i feel like i’ll be okay…
hard to focus on work when my mind is on preparing my home…my damn thermometer isn’t functioning, or, i’m just doing something wrong…it’s frustrating me that i’m still realizing more things i need to have prepared and not being there to do it…
thankfully god daughter cleaned the house yesterday…only cost me half my cleaning supplies and somehow she busted my showerhead – quite the surprise when i went to take a shower this morning…oh well, small price for not having to clean myself 🙂

First case in South Korea and the first case in the US were identified on January 20th, same damn day. One government took it seriously, the other did not (and compounded that error with a bunch of other unforced ones). This is going to last for months, in significant part because Trump fired all the experts and then spent almost two months doing basically nothing while claiming concerns were a democratic hoax designed to impeach him. He didn’t want tests because more confirmed cases would make his numbers look bad. And now we still have no ability to track the spread and it’s too late anyway, while South Korea appears to have it under control.
Come November we could still be deep in the shit. What’s the chances he calls off the election? What’s the chance his lapdog courts tell him he can’t? It’s happening in Israel.

It’s trivial, but the Knicks would have had a shot at hitting the over this year. The line was around 26.5 or 27.5, so we would have had to win 6 or 7 out of the last 16 games. Looking at the schedule we had the Hornets, Warriors, Bulls, T-Wolves (2x), the Magic and the Pistons left. Win 4 out of those games and steal a couple wins against good teams playing out the string and baby that’s the over.

In all seriousness, my school is moving forward like a well-oiled machine, made a relatively seamless transition since we were already using google classroom extensively. I have a brilliant team of pedagogues, especially my AP. My main job is to run interference so that the DOE doesn’t get in the way, and to trust my born leaders and stay out of their way myself. Believe me, I’m no smarter as an educator than I am as a basketball analyst.
I also think the wartime analogy is apropos, and some of the most ingenious innovations came about during wartime, as the most brilliant minds go into overdrive to solve all kinds of problems beyond weaponry. This will ass-boot ludites like myself (my kids say OK boomer to me like 10x per day) into the 21st century. Those of us that survive, anyway.

That's a good question. I was going to lose my only bet anyway because I took the Bulls and over and the entire season was an injury filled debacle with a lot of unhappy players. Maybe they will prorate based on number of games played.

The fed can monetize whatever the government needs. Of course that can have negative consequences, but if the government comes to market with a couple of trillion dollars worth of bonds and the market can't handle it at prevailing interest rates, the fed will print the money. That's basically what QE (quantitative easing) is.
Hubert, my guess would be they got them from Korea. Be easier to arrange than China since it’d be private enterprise not state controlled.

First of all the only important data actually argues the opposite of your position. The only important stat is death rate. I don’t give a crap how many tests are taken if they don’t translate into outcomes.
For example South Korea has 51,000,000 people and the US around 330,000,000 about 1/6th of the US population. They have world class infrastructure, education and a populace that is far more accustomed to “following orders” from their leadership than America. They have taken 14 times the tests as America as of 3/17 (the best data I could find).
With all their “seriousness” and Trump’s “frivolity”, how come the per capita death rate is ~ 2.5 time greater in RoK than America???
America has one of the lowest death rates of the industrialized nations save Canada and Germany and America was getting 500,000 visitors per month from China til Trump shut the flights down to a chorus of high dudgeon from “most” of you when he did it.
If you live in Switzerland (probably #1 on most people’s list of the most livable country)you are about 8 times more likely to die than in America, France 8 times more likely to die, Italy 75 times more likely to die, The Netherlands 6 times more likely to die and I could go on and on.

Which we don’t actually know because we didn’t even have tests to check seriously ill people until very recently, and most of the people this is killing are dying from secondary things like pneumonia.
S Korea didn’t institute a lock down, they just did social distancing. What they did do was aggressive test and then track the movements and interactions of people who were infected so that everybody who was exposed knew they were exposed and could self-quarantine. The problem they faced was a SK cult that had an event in Wuhan and when those attendees got back they spread around the country but also didn’t tell anyone where they had been because you know. Cult. They’ve actually handled the situation a lot better than anyone else who’s had to deal with the spread has. Again, not via lockdown, just via the same thing we’re doing now plus aggressive testing.
Except he didn’t. He barred entry to people with Chinese passports. He didn’t stop anyone who’d been in China from coming. The US still isn’t doing any testing of people arriving on international flights, when every other country has been doing temperature screenings for over a month and actually flagging people who are arriving from hot spots for actual testing. It was, literally, a policy based on race that didn’t actually do much at all to stop the spread. Security theater, as they say.
