I’m not going to disagree with this, but despite what is taught in school, markets are not always efficient. The prices for franchises (or any other business, real estate etc…) can get way out of line with intrinsic value if the projections of the future get overly optimistic or vice versa or the risk premium gets too high or low.
In fact, I’ll go as far as saying owners looking how much franchise prices have been growing and making any assumptions about future prices based on that are making a classic and basic error.
IMHO, compensation should be tied to actual cash flows and very little attention should be paid to the market price of teams.
The whole economy would probably operate better that way.
The reason we have so many issues now is that HUGE amounts of wealth are being created but it’s mostly going towards higher profit margins intead of compensation and to the extent it goes to compensation it’s mostly going to high level executives or other countries.
I probably shouldn’t report this here, cause it’s not basketball related, and, more importantly, it confirms that I am as idiotic in my real life as I am in my Donnie Walsh life, but since it’s the dog days and you guys seem content starved, here it is: yesterday was my daughter’s 21st birthday. Her younger sister recently totaled the Ioniq 5 they’d been sharing so, for her birthday, we got her a brand new XC60. Volvo gave me a good deal and I had nothing left to negotiate for, but still wanted the last word, so I had them throw in a Cameo from Marissa Cooper to wish her a happy birthday and, at the end, say “welcome to the XC, bitch.” So, there you go. Story told.
I hate Cameos and wish they weren’t a thing. I keep being asked what celebrity I want to announce my fantasy football team’s *draft order* (I mean, what’s the point?).
But other than that, well done, Donnie. I bet your daughter appreciated it. Now I have to look up who Marissa Cooper is.
Doogie, here’s a hint: I wrote a whole book about the show she’s from.
Already looked it up long ago, but thanks, Alan. It makes sense that I wouldn’t know because I wouldn’t be watching a “teen drama” during my age 39-42 years, and I don’t have any daughters. (Even my son was only 11 years old when it debuted.) 🙂
TBH, Alan the character name, only thinking an actual name made me google it-dropped my head when I saw the result…
On to a Knicks topic…my priors, don’t rely on the lottery (we won 1 game less than Minny in our 2 lottery seasons; they got 2 first picks; we got 3 and 4) and the Memphis reboot from Zach etc to their 2021-2 season, nabbing great young players as an example of the Knicks hybrid strategy not being good enough. But we won, they are retooling in hopes of, while we are running it back and only worrying about the loss of one rotation player.
Btw Alan, loving Ted Lasso season three. Maybe I’m just a sap, but love the redemption arcs of the characters.

I don’t think the parent/child relationship is even *supposed to* feel fair to the parent. At least not until many years go by and the parent is then the one who needs to be taken care of.

Z-man If you like Ted Lasso season 3 (I agree with Alan on this one) check out Small Prophets. Very different series but also feel good, and funny. I liked it and the girlfriend LOVED every minute. It’s actually very good.

As a statement on its own, I don’t agree with this.
Sure I put in a lot of work as a parent, but I also get a lot out of it. Many things in life need to be earned. If I spend an hour making dinner and 10 minutes eating it, is that **fair**? No. Would it make sense to spend 3 minutes microwaving a frozen dinner? Nope!
Life isn’t the conservation of energy. You constantly put out more energy than is returned. In my 40s I decided to become a magician. I put a ton of work into it, spending hours learning sleights and combinations and patter and research, all for a trick that will usually last 2-3 minutes. And don’t get me started on how much time I put into my show, booking places and magicians, and making promos and flyers, sending emails, all for 20 minutes of stage time.
Being a parent has been the most challenging part of my life. But it has also been the most rewarding. I could have chosen to not have kids. I could have chosen not to have a hobby. But I think both of those have made my life better. Otherwise what would I be doing? Just sitting watching tv all day?

Alls I know is it’s likely (in my estimation) that no child consents to the game of life. You come into this owing nothing to anyone and owe everything to the children you make… It’s pretty wonderful when you have kind loving parents who treat you with the kind of love you want to return to them at the end. It really sucks when you don’t.

was trying to preach gratitude to him, and brought up just how much his mom has his back, and looks out for him…
he said he never asked to be born, and that his mom “owed” him because of that…
said he felt gratitude towards me because I wasn’t his biological dad…even though I’ve committed to him to being dad…said I could easily walk away at any time…
that made me feel kind of bad, cuz, no doubt for too many years drove that point home as a way to control his behavior…
been trying to preach to all the kids: you are born with nothing but the skin on your ass, and you should thank god each day for that, no one owes you a damn thing…
guess I just keep repeating that point…

true story – it was listening to some of the folks here share the loss of their mom that has driven me to try to appreciate the time I have now with her…
figure I got about another 15 to 20 years or so of this journey…seeing now how different things are from your 60’s to 70’s and then (usually) finally the 80’s…
the 80’s seem to hit a whole lot different…like by mid 70’s, you really need to have most getting by stuff set to auto pilot…the ability to adapt at that point due to physical/mental limitations is very very real…
and that time is getting here faster each and every day…

Old Klay to the Heat is a brilliant coup. Recent Klay not so sure. He did shoot .383 from three last year, which was the worst of his career but still makes him useful if parked in the corner.

Denver’s an interesting case for us to study, I think.
We’ve talked about how long will the championship glow last, and folks have suggested that Leon and Brown have earned lifetime jobs.
But the Nuggets won the championship three years ago, and already
– the GM who built the team has been fired.
– the coach who won the title has been fired.
– folks are credibly suggesting Jokic should ask out.
– Nuggets fans are completely disgusted with the team and its ownership.
More importantly, all of these things were/are justified. It’s not like people are overreacting here.
I definitely recommend the Simmons/Thompson pod, though more as quality entertainment and good banter than as something that breaks any particularly new ground.
The Walter situation is…unique, to say the least. But the announcement that Marc Lore is selling his share of the Wolves today sure does make it feel like teams are increasingly being treated as assets to be flipped when the ROI is good, as opposed to, you know, pillars of a community to be stewarded over by people with some level of investment in both the pillar and the community.
Thompson has been making the point lately that this may just be a product of the investor/PE/sovereign wealth fund class catching onto something relatively late—the governing structure of major professional sports leagues combined with the US tax code does make teams stellar investments.
It is literally illegal for anyone to start a new team that competes on quality, your team can never go out of business no matter how poorly you manage it, revenue sharing guarantees a cash flow floor, and to top it all off amortization lets you write off your principal investment despite all of these idiosyncratic advantages. I mean, there’s a reason that, to my knowledge, virtually no one has sold an American professional sports team at a loss. That seems pretty rare among asset classes!
The Buss family is dramatic, self-important, and annoying. But I think we’ll miss them when they’re gone from the NBA scene. Jerry and Jeanie were/are definitely diehard basketball fans, which seems like a bare minimum qualification for owning one of 30 NBA teams but also seems likely to become increasingly rare. You don’t need to look any further than Tom Dundon buying a team he clearly doesn’t give a shit about in anything other than dollar and cents terms to see what the next generation of NBA owners might look like.
I don’t have any grand ideas about how to buck this trend other than appealing to anyone who might become extraordinarily wealthy and also happens to be big sports fan to buy a team and operate it with due fiscal prudence but also in the best interests of the people who make this heads-I-win-tails-you-lose financial proposition possible.
And worst of all, they just signed DeMar DeRozan.
Even though DeRozan is shooting down the decline slide, it feels like having The Midrange God alongside Jokic makes some kind of sense.
Not a fix, but maybe a decent move…

The Nuggets even at their peak were not a particularly well built team. They stumbled into the best player on the planet like a blind squirrel finding a nut, and the generic players they surrounded him with were good enough to win a chip one year.
The guy has had six straight 12+ BPM seasons and they have made exactly one deep playoff run with him in that timespan.
Alan has kids, a hobby, and sits around watching TV all day. That’s cool, right?
