Alvarado
IMO those stats are mostly meaningless.
He’s a solid backup PG. He’s a good playmaker and plus defender that’s a hustler and pest. When you net it all out, his teams are almost always better when he’s on the court. If he was a 40% 3 point shooter, he’d be one of the better all around PGs in the league. He’s not. That’s why he’s a backup. We are lucky to have him given we have no other PG other than Kolek.
My main issue with Alvarado is that he is not a good fit with our team. Once you have Brunson as your main guy, positional size/athleticism becomes imperative.
But beggars can’t be choosers and he was the best available fit for what we sorely lacked. It is what it is. At the end of the day, he’s not very good and will need to be replaced this offseason.
The hustler and a pest stuff is going to be hugely minimized by focused talented players like Shai, Cade , Harden, Maxey, etc, etc. He likely isn’t going to steal inbounds passes in the confrence finals.
His offense is so poor he will collapse any concept. What offense do you run with him and Mitch on the floor at the same time?
If he is playing Deuce’s minutes due to injury, we are pretty bleeped. He is fine for 15 minutes vs utah in February, but having him on the floor against a top team is instadeath.
I hope I’m wrong…
This. On the one hand, his BPM and WS/48 are slightly negative. On the other, he’s a true point and his DBPM is slightly positive. If not him this season, then who?
Who are candidates to replace him this summer?
…
Any update on Deuce??
Why would anyone judge Alvarado by BPM? It’s a metric that doesn’t evaluate what he does well. This is like judging Brunson solely based on his defense or Mitch only on his FT shooting.
Brunson never guards PGs anyway. Putting Alvarado on a PG doesn’t create any mismatch that wouldn’t already exist when Brunson is on the floor. This is very much a Brunson problem.
Any time Brunson is on the court against a big backcourt we have the issue of who he’s going to guard. It would be more of an issue if he played together wih Alvarado often. But there’s no need to play them together unless the matchup is OK. Alvarado is the backup PG.
We have the same size issue with Deuce, but we have managed because he defends well also.
I was never comfortable with Deuce as backup PG. We don’t have enough playmaking unless maybe Hart is also on the court with him. Alvarado is more of a PG. I want Deuce to get plenty of minutes also. I don’t think playing them together against bench units will be a problem, but we’ll see.
Alvarado absolutely has valuable, tangible skills, but I do think there’s a floor in terms of being a scoring threat that players have to meet in high-level playoff series (which for us, could easily begin in the first round depending on our opponent).
The version of Alvarado that is a realiable-ish open 3PT shooter and can hit the odd floater here and there meets it. The version we have gotten over the last 10 games or so doesn’t.
For this and many other reasons, pray for Deuce.
KAT is too good to have the demeanor he has. I don’t like the fact that he waits until he gets goin to be confident in his game. He needs to start that at tip off- irregardless of the fact that he’s the 2nd option. As much as I love Hartenstein, KAT should have eaten him alive by the way he rebounded in traffic last night. He also should have shot more against Caruso and Williams. It is abundantly clear to me why Shaq is so frustrated by KAT. Even when T Mac gave him the chest poke pep talk, he was grinning! His mentality is just not where it should be for a player of his caliber. In my heart of hearts, I don’t wanna see him traded. But I the flipside- I’m not sure he’s ever gonna develop the confidence to be as assertive as he needs to be. Hopefully he can turn it on for the playoffs. You know- just be a complete asshole, for lack of a better term. Tell the defenses that they can’t fuck with him and show em. I’m pretty sure the guys won’t mind- especially if he can curtail the offensive fouls.
Also- Deuce scared the shit outta me. I hope he didn’t re-injure a core muscle.
“Brunson never guards PGs anyway. Putting Alvarado on a PG doesn’t create any mismatch that wouldn’t already exist when Brunson is on the floor. This is very much a Brunson problem.”
Brown has played Alvarado and Brunson together a bunch. Even aside from that, Alvarado is a decent defender on paper because of his steal rate and ability to stay in front of players but he is tiny and isn’t going to stop big guards like Cade and Derrick White from getting whatever they want, not to mention when he is switched onto wings. And more often than not, he gives you zero on the offensive end. His career TS+ is 91, and with us so far it’s 84. That makes him nearly unplayable, or certainly not much of an upgrade over Tyler Kolek.
I guess he can hold the fort for 10mpg but honestly, he pretty much sucks.
Maybe just maybe get Towns , a guy sitting on 62 TS more shots
Maybe not the best choice of metric on my part, but I wouldn’t exactly ignore Brunson’s bad defense or Mitch’s bad free throw shooting either. The question for all three players is whether their strengths outweigh their weaknesses. If you’re talking about a defensive specialist who gives it up on the other end of the floor; I think you take that into account.
OKC is a better team. They just have a lot more talent than we do. At every position, 1-12 up and down their roster. Theyre the defending champs for a reason. Knicks are not at their level.
Because of the Charlotte loss they now have to win 6 out last 7 to have a shot at the #2 seed. 5-2 was very reasonbale. 6-1? – not so much.
as the season has progressed – i’m not so sure labeling the nba leader in charges drawn as a terrible defender is as accurate as it is easy to say…
I mean his dbpm isn’t that terrible…sure he’s slow footed and kind of relatively short…
just don’t think he’s as bad as the often repeated narrative states…
I do want to point out that Alvarado led the team with a 130 Ortg against OKC. Was it specifically due to his play? Questionable, but he clearly wasn’t tanking the offense yesterday.

I see an 81
Bkref uses a boxscore stat based on the player’s individual boxscore. NBA.com has the actual offensive rating for the team whole the player was on the floor. Alvaradoay not have had a good game, but he did not “tank the offense”
Jaden Ivey?
Adding this to the list of reasons I’m relieved Leon wasn’t able to trade up for him.

Jalen Williams and iHart are out tonight vs Detroit…
Thanks!
Interesting that the Celtics played JT and not JB last night and reversed it tonight.
I wonder which team they think is more likely to get to the Finals.
So it sounds like Deuce’s injury last night was something less than a re-injury or an aggravation. He is listed as questionable for the Houston game, although who knows, maybe they are awaiting further testing results. Maybe it’s just a scar tissue thing, or maybe it’s about pain tolerance more than risk of re-injury.
Fingers crossed!
Wemby tonight: 41 PTS, 4 AST, 16 REB, 1 STL, 3 BLK, 2 TO
Altuve tonight: 4-4, 2 HR, 4 R, 2 RBI, 1 BB

Cyber: any intel on Luigi Suigo? 7’4”, 18-year-old Italian with a feathery touch from three?
Dosunmu an outstanding pickup for the Wolves. Too bad that Ant has been out and the rest of the team is generally playing pretty badly (although not tonight against the tanking Mavs).
Methinks 2nd half of b2b has more to do with tonight’s resting of guys who have missed 29 and 42 games. They had an off day before last night’s Knick’s game.
Looks like playing with Tatum and no Brown worked better than playing with Brown and no Tatum.
