We knew there will will be several looses this year solely due to the 3 point variance. Think this was one of them.
Hate that MB didn’t empty the bench in the 3rd quarter when Lakers went up by 26.
MB needs to be comfortable in his own skin..he’s not Thibs. We don’t do 26 point comebacks by playing JB 42 minutes. Play OG 38 minutes guarding Luka and then ask him to do it again today against Kawhi.
Yeah, yesterday was a bad game all around. KAT played relatively well (outside of more bad three-point shooting), almost everyone else kind of sucked in one way or another, and Brown’s bench work was similarly questionable. You can blame three-point variance and it’s true, but we really lacked any kind of energy or cohesion. We were, on the court, not the better team, and that was rough to watch.
The fact that Jordan effing Clarkson had the best +/- on the team says everything.
Clarkson isn’t so bad. He just lost a rotation spot to better players. On other teams he would get more minutes.
When we went down big, I think the correct move was to throw in the towel and focus on tonight instead. I’m not sure how much an exatra 5-10 minutes takes out of a player for the next night, but I think the probability of a comeback was so low at one point, I’d rather have the rest.
Clarkson has oscillated between being a fairly useful player and being unplayable to such an extent that I question whether we’d be better off playing Dadiet… and Dadiet has zero NBA-level skills.
I said the same thing BEFORE the game.
I thought Clarkson gave us useful minutes in a game where nothing else was going our way. He spurred a bona fide fake comeback. I have no problem with him not being in the rotation, but I still think he’s an above replacement-level use of a fringe roster spot.
If anything, I would’ve liked to see him play a tick more to relieve Brunson a bit. Relatedly, the only long term concern yesterday highlighted for me is that the captain’s been a little underwhelming since returning from injury. We’re going nowhere fast if he’s at all compromised, so we can only hope he sorts out whatever the issue is, and if that requires some rest, well, that’s a very easy call from my POV.
The very small silver lining in yesterday’s game is Clarkson. 14 minutes garbage time in the last 9 games with 6 DNP-CDs. Came in ready. And semi-Microwaved, which is exactly his role (minus the semi) as an end of bench player inserted when nothing else is clicking. Yes I would prefer Dadiet get those minutes for development but come the play-offs, Clarkson is a much more useful option.
I hate load management but after tonight the Knicks should win the next 7 games even without Brunson so if it’ll be beneficial to sit him here and there I’m all for it. Shit after playing 42 mins yesterday I’m alright if he sits tonight.
The only ones not playing tonight are Mitch and Deuce. Brunson isn’t even on the injury report with so much as a Probable tag:
Expected Lineup
PG Jalen Brunson
SG Josh Hart
SF Mikal Bridges
PF OG Anunoby
C K. Towns
MAY NOT PLAY
C M. Robinson Doubt
G M. McBride Out
Expected Lineup
PG D. Garland
SG Kris Dunn
SF Kawhi Leonard
PF Derrick Jones
C Brook Lopez
MAY NOT PLAY
F J. Collins Out
Wow, Brook Lopez, starting center is, well, a thing.
Although I note that two games ago he scored 26 points including 4-8 from three, so I think we can all see what’s coming…
yes, poorly played by MB with the minutes’ allocation…although to be fair I too was pretty certain at some point the lakers would fold…
did not happen, they only got stronger during the 3rd quarter…unpleasant loss to be sure…
This “lets wait for the playoffs” manta sustaining most of you all season is gonna sting. Boston is gearing up, Detroit has a score to settle, and Bridges doesn’t even try. Temper those hopes boys. This fool’s gold team is gonna bite us all in the ass.
Detroit has been bad lately. Have you missed it? And Bridges was bad yesterday, but was the best player on the court against a Spurs team that can’t lose unless they play the Knicks .
Oaktrees asking ChatGPT to “write a Pagliacci post.” Made me laugh out loud, well done.
MB has had a few stinkers and yesterday was one of them…but structurally he’s been what most of us thought he would be.
Only thing I wish we would have developed is a systemic plan B for when we start shooting 4 for 20 or miss double digit threes in a row.
We need a completely different systemic approach when everyone is putting up bricks.
Don’t know what it is but sitting JB and KAT and letting bench play a run and gun style or only only play best high level defenders for 5-10 minutes. Post up heavy offense or hitting KAT or Hart on the roll only…need to be able to switch and fight southpaw when needed. Same thing happened to Boston during game 1 and 2, they went ice cold and just kept hoisting threes.
The plan should be to attack the rim or play through KAT inside
One thing that goes under reported with Bridges is that he plays every single game. I would imagine his body is tired and why he can drift in games. For example his wing counterpart OG has missed 14 games. I would like to see his minutes lowered down the stretch run.
Quietly I see the Pacers now tied for the worst record in the league while sitting Zubac. Rick Carlisle outsmarting the league I see.
IMO Clarkson is in the exact role he should be in now. I said that when someone asked if they might release him to open a spot. He’s a net negative player by enough that you don’t want him in the regular rotation, but he’s not so bad that you want to open a spot in the roster for some scrub that just got let go by another team. He’s fine as a 3rd string “break the glass in case of emergency” scorer off the bench and he seems likeable enough to keep around. I was harsh on him and his defense/decision making when we signed him, but I’m fine with him now and want him to do well when he does play. He may still get hot some night and win a game for us.
Precious AND Yabu in the NBA.com Top 10 Plays from yesterday…
That Sunday sucked.
I am in Delray Beach chaperoning for my spring breakin’ son (or vice versa) so might be distracted from the game tonight. As a reward for enduring a miserably cold and snowy NY winter, the weather gods cooked up perfection for us. Go Knicks!
Yabu was 1-6. I think I’ll be ok with that
The weather is very nice in NY today. Going to be good up until Friday
Moving on from spinning our heels in the LA dust. The summer bodies are out in force in prospect park…
In other ridiculous news:
https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/48156644/nba-cancels-atlanta-hawks-planned-magic-city-tribute-night
It was dumb to plan it in the first place, and it was dumb to take the time to cancel it. Just dumb all ’round.
JollyRoger, the best part of it was Yabu jumped out of bounds to save an errant ball that led to a great shot. I had no idea he could jump!!!
looking forward to the mexico/usa wbc match up…a billion times better than spring training baseball…
The Sixers lineup that the Cavs managed to play against tonight is unfair.
Payne/Grimes/Oubre/Barlow/Bona is not quite G league, but it’s damn close.
Judge is the new Captain America.
