Have enjoyed seeing the fully-realized Wingstop of the last couple of games. Like everyone else, I’m curious how this will work, on both ends, whenever Brunson comes back. We’ve seen Jalen be a good and willing passer, including with this roster. He’s not a Melo type where his default is to go hero-ball; he does it when it seems like nothing else is working. That said, even when he’s playing relatively selfless, he still has the ball in his hands way more than Payne or Deuce or Delon, and his passing instincts aren’t as strong as Kolek’s. And then of course there’s the defense. Will the Wingstop group be quite as engaged and effective if they now have to cover up for the captain’s deficiencies at one end, and aren’t seeing the ball as much at the other?
Alan, actually thought of you after the game, as this season is really unraveling like a (so far fairly decent) tv show. Multiple narratives around does Hart have a role, the wingstops not quite working, Deuce’s ascendance, Jalen going down, wingstops slowly figuring it out, Mitch coming back, Jalen’s upcoming return. Plus little side stories like Kolek and Delon, among others.
Think I saw somewhere that the Bucks odds of 6th seed went up to ~65%, late last night. this has to be the easiest first round match up in the last 3yrs.
Just watched footage of the brawl in Minny. Wonder what the suspensions will look like. Wasn’t remotely at Malice at the Palace levels, but it did spill into the stands, and I assume Silver will not like that at all.
Wanted to follow up on this since it was the end of the last thread.
While I agree that Cam’s scoring bursts might be useful off the bench, I think Kolek getting the nod as the back up PG still makes more since. For one thing, Shamet has picked up the scoring and he seems to have good chemistry with Kolek. Kolek’s passing also opens up easy bucket opportunities for dudes like Precious, Mitch, etc. And I just think he brings the second unit a different look, which could be good in the playoffs for throwing teams off. You bring in Cam instead of Kolek and the team largely plays the same way the entire game.
Cam should be used situationally when we’re having problems getting buckets and need someone who can hoist up a few threes and, hopefully, make them. And my thought is that Kolek, if given more PT, would eventually start scoring more.
Co-sign on what swifty said.
The fact that Thibs immediately leapfrogged Delon Wright over Kolek does not make me hopeful for Kolek to move ahead of Payne in the Circle of Trust if the team is at full health for the playoffs. It has more of a chance of happening than Playoff Vildoza — which, to remind you, was never going to happen — but I would not wager any money on such an outcome.
I think there is a virtually zero chance that Kolek gets non-garbage time minutes in the playoffs if all of Brunson, Payne, and Deuce are available. I would suspect that even Delon is ahead of him on the depth chart.
And for good reason. Kolek is a defensively challenged rookie who would be way over his head in a game with playoff intensity. He would be immediately and mercilessly targeted the minute he stepped on the court.
He’s had some positive minutes against a depleted Bucks team and a terrible AND depleted Blazers team. That brings him up to a total of 246 minutes at the NBA level, most of which have been terrible.
The kid is fun to root for and a nice project backup PG for now, nothing more. There is no way Thibs is going to put him in the rotation in the playoffs unless fate forces his hand.
Z-man, I know you’re right but I like to imagine what Kolek can bring to this team! He does something no one else on the team currently does.
I think I’ll just have to be patient and hope that next season he is the back up PG. I think, long term, he is a great change of pace PG to back up Brunson.
I still think his shooting can come around, especially (but not only) considering his at-least-cromulent college stats. But he has to…….you know…….play.
Am I advocating throwing him to the wolves in the playoffs given his current reluctance/general badness in shooting? Nope. Am I advocating that he gets a good amount more burn for the next eight games to see if he can begin to show something in time for the playoffs? Definitely (especially once we have no magic number issues, but maybe even while we still do).
So, to summarize: I love Kolek’s passing. I also love Delon’s defense and 3-point shooting potential. I love that we have both of them. Let’s use them.
With Kolek, there is a lot of good and, visually, some obvious shortcomings. He looks like a college guard with NBA passing skills. When he gets into the paint you realize how small he is. On defense, when people rise up over him you realize it too, although he gets himself into good spots and has quick hands.
Loving Kolek but in a measured way
Does anyone else like Delon and kinda sorta want to at least see if there’s space for him in the rotation when we’re healthy? If you squint, you can see a poor man’s jack-of-all-trades backup wing. He looks more or less like what his numbers from his recent good-ish seasons say he should.
Realistically he’s probably the odd man out because Shamet is the more reliable shooter and that’s fair enough. I suppose I can see a world where 10 minutes a game for him and 25-30 for Hart is preferable to just adding his minutes to Hart’s, though.
Actually. I don’t agree. I think he will work on his shooting in the off season and come back better next season. I don’t think anyone improves their shooting game to game unless it’s just a case of overcoming stage fright or building confidence.
But he’s hardly taking any shots, which to me indicates that it could be stage fright/confidence.
I guess so, but the college three point is closer than the pros, so I’m not sure that’s it. It would be nice if it was. Then he could improve quickly.
Even if perhaps for “I’m stuck in my ways” reasons, one of the best recent rotation moves Thibs made is starting Delon. We now know we have a vet who has more than fumes left in him at the back end of the bench–hopefully not needed but useful to have come the playoffs. I really like Kolek but nothing he has done in the past week has changed my opinion of him.
I wonder what switched on for Anunoby. And I’m not wondering it because of his offensive surge, I wonder because of how he looks doing it. He doesn’t look nearly as clunky as he did earlier in the season. Everything he’s doing looks smooth and purposeful these days, and I am here for it.
RE: KAT
Dude needs to call for the ball and we need to look to feed him. When he has a smaller guy on him, Thibs needs to call sets that plant him in the paint. I love his passing and his threes, but he needs to eat faces when there’s a mismatch.
RE: Brunson
He’s gonna have a tough job adjusting when he returns. He needs to keep his bigs involved andget his touches- all the while not taking too much away from Wingstop. But, if there’s anyone who can do it- it’s JB
In Brunson we (can very likely) trust. Nice to have a guy who can hopefully figure out the best way to use the other assets on the team, even if they’re not quite configured the same way as when he went out. It’s another reason to try to get him back for maybe four more regular season games, but *only* if he’s truly ready, of course.
By the way, four more games is exactly what he would need to be considered for postseason awards.
Zach Lowe just signed to do a podcast with The Ringer, called, simply, The Zach Lowe Show. All that’s up right now is a teaser, but so excited to have that dude back before the playoffs.
Kolek is the best passer on the team and should be the backup PG, but he’s not ready for the playoffs. He’d be targetted on defense and be under playoff pressure without ever even experiencing and adjusting to game pressure yet. That’s why he was supposed to be playing more in the regular season! I guess Thibs is OK with Deuce and Payne, but IMO they are not real PGs.
IMO Deuce and Payne are more combo guards and Payne’s best use is as an energy scorer off the bench. He’s too hot and cold to be the regular 6th man on championship caliber team, but for our bench when he’s hot he can change a game and he can also play some PG.
Delon looks OK also.
Ultimately I think Kolek should be the backup PG. I’m fine with keeping any combination of Delon, Payne and Delon for next year. They can play next to Kolek or be 3rd string if we hopefully improve the bench.
Swapping out Kevin O’Connor for Zach Lowe is a big win for billionaire bill
Now Simmons just needs to hire Alan to do a TV rewatchables
Co-sign on all Strat said. But do you mean Delon, Payne, and Shamet?
“Does anyone else like Delon and kinda sorta want to at least see if there’s space for him in the rotation when we’re healthy?”
Delon is an excellent defensive guard with great size. He’s an adequate ball-handler and can so a few things offensively. He has a career 2.0 BPM in 11,000 NBA minutes.
His biggest weakness is that he’s an inconsistent offensive player even at very low usage. It seemed like he was making the leap at age 25 in TOR, where he was a very strong backup combo guard for a 59 win Raptors team that went to the second round. After that, he just kind of bounced around and never really established himself as a keeper.
In a way, he’s kind of what I hoped Frank could become…a defensive stopper who could do some PG-ish things and knock down an open 3. I think he’s an excellent non-rotation situational guy on a minimum deal, far more useful than Sims. As to making the “healthy” rotation, I don’t see him displacing Payne or Shamet right now, but his defense is pretty special so I could see him getting an opportunity vs. the tougher scoring guards in the playoffs and then it will depend on what he does with it.
I think he finally realized he’s a lot stronger than some of the guys guarding him. So instead of twisting, turning and contorting while trying to finish 😉 he can overpower people and draw fouls.
He still has to work on his handle and finish, but if we changed the starting lineup and put him at SF where he is being guarded by smaller men more often, he could be a beast next year if he can put it all together. He’s young enough to get better (especially his handle).
Sorry, yes. Thanks.
I’ve been a Delon Wright fan at various times in his career. I could never figure out why he moved around so much. I guess now at 32 it’s a little different, but I like him on our bench.
Yeah, I’ve always liked Wright, too. I have to admit that I thought that he was pretty washed based on his lack of usage in Milwaukee, and it’s good to see that it’s not quite the case yet, even if we are definitely getting him in the latter stages of his career.
The only problem is that I’m almost positive that we will never see him again on the version of our squad that includes Brunson and McBride, and that makes me kinda sad and frustrated. Even once Thibs sees that a player is “trustable,” that player will still go back into the dungeon at first opportunity to do so.
My concern with OG is that he is getting too much confidence in things that will not work vs. good defensive teams. His ball control in traffic is terrible and his shots off of drives (other than dunks and fadeaways) are easily timed and he gets either stripped or blocked. Come playoff time, there will be a well-established scouting report of the OG follies we have watched all year.
Moreover, I worry about the offensive IQ of our team. It’s not that we turn the ball over a lot or don’t have immense scoring talent. I just thing that “smart” defensive teams can goad us into doing dumb shit, especially KAT and OG, and to a degree, Hart. And when the offensive engine sputters a bit, our defense at the 1 and 5 makes us vulnerable to big runs.
But we will find out a lot more about our starting lineup’s ceiling in the next few weeks.
By the way, I thought that Kolek should have (and was going to) start in the game against the Bucks leading up to that game. But I’m also ready to admit that Thibs used the Wright starting/Kolek backup PG set-up pretty masterfully over the last two games.
“Even once Thibs sees that a player is “trustable,” that player will still go back into the dungeon at first opportunity to do so.”
I think we will see Delon subbing in for Brunson situationally if we need defensive stops at the end of games. If he does well there, maybe his role expands a bit. What’s interesting is that Delon seems like an excellent POA defender, so that moves Mikal into an off-ball defensive role that suits him better. Delon, Mikal, OG and Mitch is a ferocious defensive foursome, and you can either go all defense with Precious or Deuce, or throw Brunson or KAT in as the volume scorer.
In the future, if Thibs is going to remain the coach, Leon should just fill the back of the bench with Delon-style “last fumes” guys. I don’t really blame Thibs for favoring this type of player over the Jacob Toppin types, and they’re not usually all that hard to acquire. The Fungible Last Fumes Vet (FLFV) should be a thing.
I don’t think Delon looks anything close to “washed” but sure. The point is, having non-rotation older vets who can at least give you several bonafide NBA skills in an emergency is better than sub-replacement level guys like Toppin, Jeffries, Ryan, Buie, etc. Delon Wright can play.
Couldn’t agree more. This needs to be a point of emphasis and applied the team as a whole as well. You play as well as your opponent allows you to. Since they came back from the West coast, the Knicks have faced opponents that are either struggling, e.g., the Bucks, or mediocre/bad. We clearly lost to the only really good team we faced, the Clippers. Good teams won’t allow OG to go off, the defense to get away with mistakes, Kolek to go unpunished when on the floor, and so on.
Big highs lead to big lows. We know what this teams is. We only wish and hope it will surprise us in the playoffs with elevated play. It is wrong to think they are ready to compete for a championship if they win two more games, and wrong to think the team is worth nothing and everybody needs to be fired when they lose a few games in a row.
Delon should have had 5 stocks last night if it weren’t for bad officiating. The 4 ones that were counted correctly resulted in a Knicks possession, and the one called a foul likely would have been a Knicks possession too.
He may have lost a step and he might not play passable offense against better defenses, but Delon was very recently one of the best perimeter players in the league — I’m not sure he’s done being one.
Keep in mind that Toppin was on a two-way deal. At the start of the year, we had 13 men on the main roster. All but Dadiet and Kolek were guys who had played at least a few years in the league and were Thibs circle of trust types. Mitch was also hurt, and we kept the last two spots open as long as possible for apron reasons. Then we added Matt Ryan, who is young and not good, but gave us flexibility to wait for the more Thibs-y player in Landry Shamet. You can’t sign real veterans to two-ways, and you can’t never roster rookies. So between those realities, the apron, and Mitch’s long injury recovery, we had to play with a shallow bench this year. Based on how the roster looked prior to the KAT trade, we were looking to be substantially deeper than last year’s squad. Even if there’s no major trade this offseason, I would expect Leon to prioritize adding/keeping more Delon types, while still leaving room for a few kids to develop, before this roster becomes unsustainably expensive.
What’s really wild is that Matt Ryan isn’t even that young at 27. He was supposed to be a vet shooter with a career 40.2% shooter from 3, but he somehow shot only 31.6% for us.
By the way, Delon is Dorell’s younger brother by about 7 years. Dorell had some decent years with Miami, and then a couple of even better seasons with Golden State playing with Steph Curry in 2010-2012. (Steph has certainly been around for quite a while, hasn’t he?)

on Damian Lillard’s return timeline for the Bucks after being diagnosed with a blood clot in his right calf.
It might not be quite the cakewalk we’ve been anticipating. We should still be able to vanquish this group, though.
I guess Ryan’s just young enough, in service time, to qualify for a two-way. You can’t sign somebody like Delon Wright to a two-way, is my point.
Even with Dame, I feel confident we can beat the Bucks in 6 or less. Although, betting against Giannis and Dame might not be wise, lol. But I’d rather face them than Detroit. Detroit feels like a trap first round opponnent.
Well, yeah. We beat the Bucks with both Giannis and Dame by 22 back in November, and then by 34 in January. For some reason I haven’t looked into, we are not a good matchup for them.
Our players rating Clyde’s looks:
https://x.com/nyknicks/status/1906728750336671769
My rate for OG in this video is… FOUR!!! 😀
I remember hearing Spoelstra earlier this season talk about how it’s hard finding veterans who are willing to be end of bench players racking up DNP-CDs without complaining but still being totally prepared to play when they get called upon. Props to Wright for the way he’s been able to contribute these past couple of games.
I might be the slow boy, but I don’t. We haven’t seen this team play with Mitch who has the ability to be a very significant piece, especially in the playoffs. He can plug a bunch of holes if he can give 24mpg.
Unless a key player gets injured in the last 8 games, even after all the minutes kvetching, It appears we might see a full and healthy roster for a few games at the end, then 6 days off to prep for round 1 and then a reasonable playoff opponent in round 1 to work out the kinks before the real test vs Cleveland or Boston.
Agree with BPL here (!). There’s Mitch in general, there’s does Mitch plug the hole that is Brunson on D, there’s this new OG, there’s whether the Wingstops drop dead or at least swoon upon the return of Brunson or do we become the Ideal Offense. There’s whether whatever is ailing KAT (is there something ailing KAT?) gets fixed and he returns to his juggernaut days.
Agreed. When healthy and with a good Mitch on the roster, we hope we will be competitive vs. Boston. We will be ecstatic if we beat them, disappointed if we are not competitive vs. Boston, and stunned if we lose in round 1 vs Milwaukee. In this latter case, probably some serious decisions will have to be made in the off season. That is what I mean when I say we know what this team is.
The extreme approaches, big highs and big lows, are 1) it is championship contention or bust — or at least, ECF appearance, and 2) before the big test deciding that the team is a bust and needs to be broken up, or the coach needs to be fired, and so on.
We’ve seen both tendencies flaring up in here during win streaks or consecutive bad games accordingly.
OG is hilarious because you can’t really tell if he’s being so deadpan to be funny or that’s really him. I love that guy. lmao
generally i have a respect for folks who make it an art of saying less and listening more…not an easy thing for me to always/often/ever do…
I’d be interested to hear OG’s dad speak to see if he is also so measured in his words and facial expressions…
OG getting to the rim is a thing now, using the julius randle bump and grind your way to the rim…
it seems we now have several offensive options going in to the playoffs…
interesting to see how they perform in the playoffs…
Thin-slicing an end of bench guy’s potential is probably a little too on brand for this blog, but I genuinely want to see how we do with Brunson and Wright on the floor together. They seem fairly complementary to me – Delon moves the ball and can do a little on offense, but he can also be a plus point of attack defender while Brunson is more than capable of making up any offensive drop-off. I’d be interested to see how they do as a duo, especially with Wingstop and Mitch.
So much is going to rely on both Thibs’ and Cap’n’s adjustments. This worries me a lot, mostly the former.
Well, if Cap can adjust then hopefully Thibs won’t have to as much!
Strong point.
https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6235572/2025/03/31/nba-tanking-problem-fix-draft/
Our old pal Vorkunov has an interesting idea I haven’t heard before in the latest “how to eliminate tanking” proposal: automatically assign the two worst teams to the 4th and 5th pick in the draft.
automatically assign the two worst teams to the 4th and 5th pick in the draft.
Briliant. Problem solved.
Edwards: “ Can confirm Knicks are planning to sign P.J. Tucker to a two-year deal (second a team option). @ShamsCharania first.
NYK waited to get this done in order to have enough room to sign another vet at end of regular season if they choose.
Would have to release someone to do it.”
I’m guessing this is just in case of injury in the final few games, I don’t know who they’d want to cut or who they’d want to acquire at this point.
I guess two seasons means the rest of this season and next season so the team option is for the 2025-2026 season
The idea that PJ Tucker is even on our team was ridiculous enough. The fact that they keep re-signing him is almost beyond ludicrous. Wish we’d signed Drew Timme or Moses Brown instead, or brought up TJ. Maybe I’m misunderstanding why we couldn’t have done any of those things.
We appear to have mostly re-signed him so we can trade him in the offseason, Doogie. I assume we could have done the same with Brown, but we have three healthy(ish) centers at the moment, and I doubt anyone signed at this point would play, barring such an injury epidemic that we couldn’t go anywhere in the playoffs anyway.
“We appear to have mostly re-signed him so we can trade him in the offseason…”
Ahhh, that makes more sense, thanks Alan!
Hey, I brought this up last night and didn’t get a response, but I’ve been thinking about an alternate Knicks history where we win a few titles between 1973 and today and how that might change the Clyde narrative.
He’ll always be a beloved Knick and broadcaster, but I wonder if he would be quite as revered if he didn’t represent the only Knicks team to win a title in the last 52 years.
Just food for thought…
I love Walt ‘Clyde’ Frazier entirely because he’s Walt ‘Clyde’ Frazier. I’m super glad he won some titles and all, but he’s just a fucking saint. If Patrick Ewing won some titles too that’d be great, but that doesn’t alter Walt ‘Clyde’ Frazier from being fucking saint even one little bit.
It’s not impossible that Tucker has gotten himself into game shape over the last month following a severe injury.
A team option is always better than no team option. We could use him as salary filler or, if he does manage to play well in the playoffs, we can retain him.
I never saw Clyde play when he was active. For me it’s entirely his style on and off the mic. He’s a lot of fun.
clyde committed himself to the city and involved himself over the long run like very few other new york athletes have…
Episode two of the Studio was fucking unbelievable anxiety. It’s good.
He was great on both sides of the ball, clutch as all hell and 100% team first. He’s a living legend for NYers that were around to see him play. His game 7 performance in the “Willis game’ was beyond legendary. He deserves all the love he gets and more as both a player and on the mic.
“He’ll always be a beloved Knick and broadcaster, but I wonder if he would be quite as revered if he didn’t represent the only Knicks team to win a title in the last 52 years.”
I think that if anything, Clyde was hurt by the lack of championships. When a team wins a title, everyone associated with the organization is elevated (unless it is scandal-ridden, e.g like the Astros).
The status that Clyde has achieved is due to a number of factors that set him apart from other sports legends.
First, he had his greatest performance in the greatest game in the franchise’s history. Folks who were not around to witness that team and that era can’t really understand the degree to which that team captivated the entire city. Or that they were significant underdogs going against the (over)hyped original big 3 of Chamberlain, West, and Baylor. Or that they were an original NBA franchise in the nation’s greatest city who had not yet won a championship. Or that there was no competing team in basketball (Jets vs. Giants, Yankees vs. Mets) to divide the fan base. Or that their style of play was as lacking in selfishness or personal agendas, as it was brimming with basketball IQ and high character off the court. Throw the Willis Reed drama on top of that, and you could say that Clyde’s performance in that game and what it meant to that fanbase will never be surpassed.
Add to that the fact that Clyde was a rare combination of, on one hand, athletic superstar, ladies’ man, fashion plate, and on the other hand, humility, kindness, and impeccable character. Only Mike Conley played more games without getting a technical foul. Never, ever argued with refs, or barked at teammates, or sulked, or gave less than 100%. No drinking scandals (see: Joe Namath, Mickey Mantle) no braggadocio (see: Reggie Jackson), no surliness/standoffishness (see: Tom Seaver, Patrick Ewing).
Then the transition to the broadcast booth….for those who knew him as a player, it seemed kind of impossible. He seemed just too cool to want to be such a prominent voice. And at first, he was not all that well received, nor was the team very good. But he just won people over…probably just like he won thousands of ladies over…with cool, charm, and character. In all my years of listening to him, I never once perceived him as a homer, or as a mean-spirited critic of any player, coach, or ref. His rhyming wasn’t for everybody, but now that we can regularly listen to other commentators, I appreciate his skill and preparation way more than I did early on, even during the Ewing era.
And then there’s the partnership with Mike Breen, who I think will go down as the best of all time. He is also a guy with an impeccable character, and a gift for bringing out the best in his broadcasting partners, even the bad ones, and I think he especially elevated Clyde. Whenever one of them is missing from the broadcast, it is a huge step down, and when both are away, it kind of sucks.
So if they had a championship season or two to have shared their grace and humility and objectivity in spite of their obvious love for the Knicks, I feel pretty certain that it would have just magnified the legend. Beyond wanting a championship for myself and my family, and even some of you guys, there is no one who I’d rather see at a championship parade than Clyde. When he moves on, my kids may be more upset than me!
