    So it sounds like Wright was very good for a quarter and then largely forgettable after. How did Kolek look on both ends?

    Also, I’m pleased that OG has been able to step up so well on offense in Jalen’s absence. We know KAT can score in bunches, and Mikal can, too (even if he doesn’t do it as often), but other than the ballhandling, OG has been really impressive on that end of late when given more responsibility.

    He looked like a true pass-first point guard, which quite honestly is very refreshing. At the same time, though, I came away wishing that he would look for his own shot a *little* bit more, both to keep defenses honest and to get better at making some.

    It’s not like he’s a hopelessly bad shooter. His senior year at Marquette he shot 49.6 percent the field overall (38.8 percent from 3 and 55.2 percent from 2 for an eFG of 56.3 percent), along with 85.1 percent from the line and 15.3 points per game (second on the team) in the Big East. He’s never going to be a great scorer in the NBA, but there is a little something there that is quite workable.

    On defense, yeah, he’s targeted a bit, but as has been stated a few times he’s a very hard worker, and he can get better at that end.

    I think he’s a keeper, and I’m glad we drafted him.

    This period is demonstrating that OG and Mikal are both capable of a lot more on offense than when Brunson was in the lineup. When Brunson returns, their production will decline again and one of them will have probably a game where they disappear from time to time. That’s OK. Brunson will remain the #1 option. But hopefully Brunson will learn from this that when he has a tough matchup or they are doubling him, he doesn’t have to dribble away a possession or force something. He just has to move the ball. We have other players that can score.

    @TommyBeer

    OG Anunoby has been an absolute beast of late on the offensive end.

    Over his past five contests, OG is averaging 28.4 points, 2.2 assists, 2.2 steals and 3.2 treys while shooting a blistering 53.8% from the floor, 42.1% from downtown and 96.3% from the charity stripe.

    According to
    @bball_ref
    , Stephen Curry is the only other player in NBA history to average more than 28 points, three treys and two steals while slashing at least 50/40/95% over a five-game span.

    @TommyBeer
    A key to OG’s recent success has been his insistence on attacking the tin.

    During this current five-game stretch, OG is averaging 5.4 free-throw attempts per game. Over his last three contests, 53.2% of his points have come in the paint. Both of those numbers are well above his career averages.

    There are still nine games left in the 2024-25 campaign, but OG has already scored more than 500 points in the paint in a single season for the first time in his career.

    @TommyBeer
    In the 11 games since Jalen Brunson injured his ankle, Mikal Bridges is averaging 21.6 points (on 55% shooting)
    and 5.0 assists.

    The only other players avg 20 & 5 on 55% during this stretch are Giannis, Zion, Giddey, Ja and Jokic.

    Happy Birthday Clyde!! 80 years young.

    Across my life, going back to his days on WFAN, he’s been the best thing about the Knicks, along with Breen, and it’s not particularly close.

    Hear, hear. Same, Owen.

    Can we fire Thibs and hire D’Antoni. There’s enough shots for everyone. Jk.

    On the offensive side Wright was less effective than Kolek in promoting moving and cutting and during his floor time in Q3 the Knicks O was stagnant and iso heavy ( perhaps that explains Wrights -9 +/-).
    Clyde remains the GOAT for sports’ stars at handling oneself with dignity, class, cool and no false humility.

    Clyde is the best! 👑 I hope he has a wonderful birthday and that there’s many more to come! 🧡💙

    Did Kolek and Wright share the floor at all? Wright is 6’5″ and at least formerly a defensive stalwart, seems like they could might complement each other well until Brunson gets back.

    I missed the game last night, but I’m guessing Thibs started Wright so we’d have some creation on the 2nd unit? I understand the reasoning, but I’m still flabbergasted. Kolek absolutely should have started and maybe OG and KAT would have had a better shooting percentage. We won though, so I will bite my tongue lol

    The Knicks Film School Newsletter hits my feelings this morning rather perfectly. I won’t stick quotes in since there are a bunch, but one of the main storylines is that this is one of the first games since I don’t know when where all three wings were firing on all cylinders.

    That was the ‘thing’ I was hoping to see develop with Jalen out. Of course now they have to show some continuity, but it was sure nice to see for one game…

    Ah hell, a couple of notable quotes:

    “In the last 11 games, New York has the sixth highest assist percentage in the NBA”

    “The other recent calling card has been New York turning into OKC East, with the second highest opponent turnover rate in the NBA over the last 11 games.”

    “Since shaking off some early post-injury rust though, Anunoby has been a different guy, averaging 22.5 points over his last 15 games. That’s more than a full point higher than any previous 15-game scoring average in his career. That he’s doing so efficiently, shooting 45.7 percent overall and 39.1 percent from deep on real volume, makes the scoring all the more impressive.”

    Wow, that was a boatload of first-inning homers, I must say.

    Fun game last night. The prophecy was fulfilled. I don’t want to dell on it but…turns out NBA caliber players can surprise you every now and then, given a chance.

    A lot has been said about how this team feels like it has a very hard ceiling, and I fully agree. That said, if you want to make a bull case it would be that in the absence of Brunson multiple guys have stepped up in a way that could augur well when Cap returns.

    Mikal, sans-Brunson: 21.6 PTS, 5 AST, 3.7 TRB, 55/38/92 shooting, .642 TS%

    OG, sans-Brunson: 22.4 PTS, 2.5 AST, 5.2 TRB, 2.3 STL, 45/38/88 shooting, .584 TS%

    Both guys seem to be playing with some more verve on defense by my eye too.

    Even with Brunson, we absolutely need additional shot creation and if we’re gonna have any chance at all of making the ECFs these guys have gotta keep it up when he returns.

    I’m not wildly optimistic, but hey, it’s something.

    It’s a bit early in the season, but right now the average OPS of the top 7 Yankee hitters is 1.512.

    Judge at 2.233 is skewing it a little….

    The prophecy was fulfilled.

    Holy cow, you remember a comment from 10 years ago? 😮

    Great read, Pepper. Thanks. 🙂

    And i loved reading this:
    I don’t see retirement anytime soon

    Can’t believe Florida pulled that out.

    No idea what happened with Jenkins. Seems pretty strange.

    For a while Ja Morant was must-see-tee-vee. For all of his pomp-and-flair, Shai G-A has shown that consistently great is better than amazingly inconsistent.

    I have always been mezzo mezzo on Morant.

    Seems crazy the lowest seed in the Elite 8 is a 3

    I haven’t been paying attention to the grizzlies but this is pretty dire

    Memphis’ regression on defense best highlights its alarming record against winning teams recently. Jenkins’ team ranked No. 7 on defense pre-All-Star break but has slipped to 19th since the midseason break. In 19 games since the All-Star break, the Grizzlies have had a negative net rating (-0.2) while giving up a whopping 116.4 points per 100 possessions — markers of a mediocre team.

    Bane and Aldama got into a bench scuffle a few days ago because Bane thought Santi wasn’t trying on defense and it sounds like a bunch of players were frustrated with their roles. idk, Jenkins seemed pretty good from a distance, but he’s been there a long time and maybe they’re just sick of him

    Memphis has over-achieved for years, seems silly to punish them for regressing to simply achieving.

    Bane looks really strong, but those short arms… Just move and jab, you’ll probably win any courtside scuffle.

    Love that Duke’s third best player is a 7’2 behemoth who will be a top 5 pick. Lot of talent on this team.

    Holy shit that block by Flagg

    Some NBA team is gonna have a complete change of fortune on draft night.

    Flagg to the Sixers is on the table which immediately wakes them up from the dead

    and no I don’t want that

    People talk about parity in the NBA because here have been different champions each year recently, but I don’t see it this year. The bottom teams are really bad and the middle teams can’t beat the top teams. The Grizzlies have trouble beating top teams, Milwaukee can’t beat us, Cleveland or Boston and we can’t beat Boston, Cleveland or OKC.

    The Grizzlies are very similar to the Knicks and they fired their coach

    “Flagg to the Sixers is on the table which immediately wakes them up from the dead”

    If you believe, as I do, that Joel is cooked, then no. They’ll be fun, but basically a very good rookie forward, an all-star guard, a very good guard, and a very good backup wing. That’s not a threat.

    It’s a bitter shame that most of you only know Clyde post playing career. He truly was a phenomenal player and an even greater personality. Young diehards deserve better. The greatest Knick ever in a multitude of ways.
