The fact that Grimes and RJ were listed on the box scores as DNP/Rest last night was pretty laughable. The NBA really needs to do something about 25 yr olds not playing during tank seasons.
Grimes was out shopping for the mansion and yacht he’s going to buy with his next contract…
Seriously. This is entertainment. Imagine being a Raptors fan and wanting to see RJ Barrett (I know, a stretch, lol). You buy tickets for the game, maybe the only game you can afford to go see all season. And RJ is not playing. Not because he’s actually hurt but just because the team wants to tank. Its an insult to the fans.
The play in has helped with tanking to some degree, I think, but it has not helped with the obviously bad teams tanking after like half of the season.
I would do away with the odds and give everyone who doesn’t make the playoffs the same odds at the top picks. And if you get the top pick one year the next year you can’t get any higher than say the 5th pick. And no team can get a top 5 pick more than 2 years in a row.
Nip this shit in the bud.
The larger problem with teams all playing the same way and shooting a ton of threes…not sure how to fix that honestly (maybe bring back hand checking?)
But teams resting players for no fucking reason needs to stop.
Philly desperately needs to lose to hold their pick, they absolutely should tank
It’s not shocking that rewarding losing incentivizes more losing among non playoff teams. It’s very tricky to fix because you want to give the worst teams some hope of a turnaround but without incentivising losing.
Things like this may be the only solution.
That all by itself indicates a problem with the process.
Maybe we need no protecting picks anymore also (or at least something along those lines). We saw that ourselves when Dallas tanked to avoid giving us a 1st rounder. No potections would change the value calculations and how deals are done, but it would be worked out.
I like the idea of limits on protections in trades. It wouldn’t fix everything, but it would help.
They should get rid of the draft.
https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/44378503/can-nba-fix-tanking-why-worse-season-plus-5-solutions
Bontemps and Pelton ran through several ideas to disincentivize tanking, including the notion of giving every lottery team the same odds. That one creates new problems, though, since not only could you get another Orlando in 1992/93 situation, but you’d now be incentivizing mediocre teams to avoid the play-in by any means necessary.
Of their other suggestions:
-Removing most pick protections (i.e., you can do top 4 protected, or lottery protected, but that’s it) helps a little, but not a ton, I feel.
-I like the idea of teams improving their lottery position based on post-All-Star break wins (or last 20 games of the season wins, whatever), rather than on losses. It at least encourages every team to try — other than, again, ones that are just on the edge of making the playoffs and don’t want to.
-This one’s also kind of interesting: “have the 14 lottery teams ordered by how they fare against one another during the regular season.”
I like the idea of the post ASG bonus and removing protections.
Big piece on Dolan in the Athletic
https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6226872/2025/03/25/james-dolan-adam-silver-owner-commissioner-nba/
I kind of like the post-ASG/last 20 games bonus, too…….but I struggle to see how they’d figure out which teams it would apply to. Unless it’s *all* teams, I guess.
For example, would they say “this applies to all teams with an under .400 winning percentage”? That would work fine in the East, but not so much in the West where there are three teams (Dallas, San Antonio, and Portland) who are *well* over .400 but currently in the lottery. And Dallas, although not currently in the play-in, sits at 35-37.
Did you read the article? This was something he said privately several decades ago when he was coaching at Salem.
“Did you read the article? This was something he said privately several decades ago when he was coaching at Salem.”
Yes, I did read the article. It’s actually a version of something he allegedly said to a source with zero subsequent substantiation. Your post suggested that it was a quote from Thibs himself.
From the article:
So the way I read is is that “Debbie” broke off the engagement with Thibs and he was devastated. My guess is that he decided, as many folks do, that he was not interested in risking going through that devastation again, and swore off intimacy from that point forward. It had zero to do with coaching, any more than it does for anyone else who chooses to not have an intimate relationship of any kind. It wasn’t some big sacrifice as that quote makes it out to be. It’s a preference.
Maybe D1 wouldn’t have broken things off if he hadn’t tried to date D2 at the same time.
Interesting, Z-Man. That would really flip the script from Thibs The Unfeeling Robot Coach to Thibs The Grief-Stricken, Broken-Hearted Mensch.
Wait, he didn’t swear off intimacy from that account. He swore off monogamy.
Sometimes there just aren’t enough Debbies.
Who doesn’t love a Debbie?
I’m particular for Little Debbies.
You can’t run an offense with only one player. They wouldn’t let him fill out a roster and he couldn’t find anyone tall enough to lockdown the paint.
One of Thibs’ buddies reported that she was a real Debbie Downer…
Got me real excited for The Studio, Alan.
I think position in the draft should be completely decoupled from record. The Lottery Wheel proposal seems like a sensible way to do this, but I’d be open to an alternative.
I’m well-aware of the potential pitfalls here. The reigning champion could get the first overall pick, a horrible team could go years without a high pick, etc. I’ve just gotten so cynical about an NBA where at any given time there are at least 10 teams not trying to win, and quite frankly even more that shouldn’t be pursuing wins even if they’ve refused to accept that. I think it’s an underrated reason for underwhelming viewership/ratings numbers.
It is simply antithetical to the nature of sports to put fans in a position where they should rationally often be rooting explicitly against their favorite team, often for multiple consecutive seasons!
Incentivize teams to win as much as possible using all of the tools at their disposal (draft, free agency, trades) and let the dominos fall where they may. Small markets will whine about it, but many of the small market success stories actually involve finding diamonds in the rough e.g. SGA, Giannis, and Jokic, not securing a high pick via losing. A smart front office can succeed under these circumstances regardless of their market.
The one night I can’t go to a game, – ticket prices dropping faster than PDiddy draws. Insane.
I would still give higher odds to the worse teams but I also would flatten those odds to be more like they used to be. I know this means a team like the late 90’s Spurs could occasionally get lucky and land the next Tim Duncan, but it didn’t happen that often. I also wouldn’t completely get rid of the odds of playoff teams getting lottery picks either. Just keep lowering the odds, maybe playoff teams couldn’t get a number one pick but could still land lottery picks if they got lucky.
I do think the play-in has helped convince some of the bubble teams to not fully pivot to tanking but it doesn’t stop the bad teams from really tanking.
Again, I just go back to the fan who can only afford to go to one NBA game a year and maybe picks one of those end of the season games cause prices are lower. They go and the player they want to see doesn’t even suit up. It doesn’t seem right.
Out of all the major sports the NBA relies on the personalities of it’s stars more than the fans being invested in a certain team. When I used to go to Knicks games on the regular I would pick certain teams to see them play because I could then see that star player.
Forget draft order, they should do an auction with tradable draft points
Or they could like pay college athletes what they’re worth. Let teams negotiate and sign them like any other player. Expand rosters not the cap.
As expected, we won’t be seeing AD tonight (from Rotowire):
Confirmed out for Tuesday
March 25, 2025
Davis (abdomen) won’t play Tuesday against the Knicks.
ANALYSIS
Following an 18-game absence, Davis logged 12 points (6-9 FG, 0-2 3Pt), six rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block across 27 minutes in Monday’s 120-101 win over the Nets. He’ll sit out the second leg of this back-to-back set, but no setback has been reported. Therefore, fantasy managers can anticipate his return to action Thursday against Orlando.
That’s a very interesting Grantland article, TNFH, albeit being 12 years old. If they had started implementing that around the time that the article had been written, it would just be kicking in around now.
McCullarsanity?
12 playoff teams: order of finish
Play-in teams that advance: 7% each (28)
Play-in teams don’t advance 6% each (24)
Non-play teams: 4.8% each (48)
Abolish trading draft picks until 1 year after draft.
Modify matching salary requirements.
Odds still favor a “lottery” team getting generational pick (72%).
McCullar was maybe my favorite of our draft picks. He’s also a bigger (than our other backups) wing.
He just needs to stay healthy, and preferably shoot.
I don’t like the wheel for the relatively obvious bias towards advantaged teams getting more advantaged. It only has to happen once to create a dynasty.
If you ask me, Thibs may not need a wife or steady girfriend, but he could sure use a double team of Debbies
No McCullarsanity. He is listed as Questionable, but all indications are that he is Questionable for Westchester, not the main team. He hasn’t been “brought up.”
You’re no fun, Doogie. Allow yourself to stay open to the possibilities!
I think making the playoffs or even play-in has a monetary incentive to not tank, but once you are out of that or worried about pick protections all hell beaks loose.
So it may require multiple rule changes like a change to protections and something like above.
The fact that a team can cripple itself by trading away picks and swaps 7 years out is not good for the league, even with the Stephen rule. Let teams roster all of their picks for a year and then trade them. It will take 3-4 years for the lottery pick allure to wash out. Then teams can still package young players like IQ, Grimes, etc. in packages for stars.
My total knowledge of women could fit into a thimble, but that sounds like a really bad idea to me too unless there is some kind of agreement on the casual nature of the relationships, which would seem somewhat inconsistent with asking one of them to marry you. If I had to guess, there may have been a halftime adjustment when one of them found out about the other.
But the tanking teams such as Toronto are having the opportunity to do what we wish *we* were doing: playing their youngest, least experienced guys to see what they’ve got going into next season. Jonathan Mogbo, A.J. Lawson, Jamal Shead, Orlando Robinson, and Colin Castleton all played between 18 and 24 minutes last night (a total of 104 bench minutes).
I’m ready for the McCullassaince
Elf is back with 14 assists.
nice to be able to look at the standings and anticipate first round matchups…
pacers/bucks and nuggets/warriors are my 2 early favorite series to watch…
wish the cavs had to play the magic in the first round…
both the magic and suns seem like they could potentially make it in and maybe even make it past the first round…
One of the less discussed upsides of playing the young players is that if one or more of them look very good, they immediately become as asset we can use in a trade instead of just as filler.
I’m not sure what Kolek is worth now, but I bet we got some phone calls after summer league.
If Huk didn’t hurt maybe he would have improved his value.
Dadiet has been invisible and is more of a project, but he was a 1st round pick.
Maybe McCullar Jr. will be given some minutes to show that he has value also.
Even if they don’t have huge value, if more than one can be looked at as a late first rounder, that would help.
Out of our 4 rookies of McCullar, Kolek, Huk and Dadiet, – we need 2 of them to become legit bench players next season in order to become the EC favorite. Start Mitch, add Hart & Deuce to the bench and they’re back to mob deep bench squad again. Both Dadier & McCullar have the potential to be legit NBA starters too.
Boston will try to shed that Brown contract for picks this summer and take a step back. Milwakee, Philly and Miami are cooked. Its just NY and Cleveland at the top.
If Thibs got dumped in college and stood by his decision to never risk it again for 40+ years, he’s a real stubborn dude. Who would have thunk it based on his flexible, quick-to-adapt basketball mind.
I joined up just in time. Apparent new addition to Mets home games, the dog bowl. 12 hotdogs, 12 buns, one helmet bowl. 12.99. I love a sausage party.
dude you can’t go to a game and get 2 hot dogs for $12.99
someone got got
its probably those cocktail weiners and they fit inside the helmet bowl…
Chris Broussard “Luka Doncic is a ball hog.”
lmao
It took long enough for someone to see the obvious. He’s been making bad dribble/shot/pass decisions since his rookie year and everyone else took the blame. He had KP, Brunson, KP and Brunson, Kyrie and now has James and Reaves and he’s still playing the same way without seeing the downside.
https://x.com/TheDunkCentral/status/1904621773007548521
Shit. I’m a sucker for a wiener.
Both Dadier [sic] and McCullar have the potential to be legit NBA starters? Based on what, exactly?
Yes, McCullar is available tonight. To play in his G-League game, that is. Not sure why you guys thought he was ready to get on the floor for us tonight. NBA injury report:
Brunson, Jalen Out Injury/Illness – Right Ankle; Sprain
Dadiet, Pacome Available G League – On Assignment
Hukporti, Ariel Out
Injury/Illness – Left Knee; Meniscus
Surgery
McBride, Miles Out
Injury/Illness – Left Groin;
Contusion/Strain
McCullar Jr., Kevin Available G League – Two-Way
Robinson, Mitchell Questionable
Injury/Illness – Left Ankle; Surgery
Injury Recovery
Hmmmmmmm……. McSee and Daddy indeed available tonight. Think we’ll see ’em? I don’t, but I hope I’m wrong again.
Mitch out. PJ Washington out. Brandon Williams in.
The Westies don’t have a game tonight
Yep, I already fixed it. Thanks.
You must bring us a shrubbery.
Watching Doogie correct himself is almost as entertaining as watching him correct everyone else.
Except for I don’t correct anyone anymore—at least very, *very* rarely—no more than anyone else does it. If you want to act like I still do it all the time, anyway, I’ll just go back to doing it. LOL
I really want to make a video tribute of OG missed layups. And send it to him.
I’d also like a game thread…
This would be the worst loss in Knicks history
I’ve become numb to embarrassing Knicks defense in the 1st quarter.
One the one hand it’s a fun game to watch, with the Knicks shooting 67% and 50% from three, along with 13 assists just in the first quarter. But the other team is en fuego (74% and 60%).
This is where the phrase playing out the string comes from
It’s going to be too easy for me to root against the Warriors and Butler. I can’t stand Draymond and Butler is catching up fast.
Well, um, we won the first quarter…
Kolek starts the second.
Precious Achiuwa, Offensive Engine…
One of Precious’s better games in a long time.
Friendly exhibition game so far. Defense is optional in this kind of games.
This is like an All Star Game with one good player
You talking about Naji Marshall?
Precious defense has been awful tonight though.
Name one player whose defense has been good. On either team. :))
This is sad…
I don’t have the energy anymore to get pissed at this embarrassing defense…
Clearly
I don’t believe you BBA.
Looking forward to the halftime organ competition, however…
Knicks struggling to contain the Mavs on defense, which is actually understandable considering Dallas is playing future Hall of Famers Kai Jones and Kessler Edwards
I mean don’t get me wrong Raven this is fucking embarrassing to watch.
It is a bit easier to watch when the Knicks are also scoring at will plus at least Dallas isn’t taking many 3s.
I feel dirty watching this
That one goes on the OG video tribute…
Much Ado About Nothing
What a “game.” Wow.
Knicks are making me more excited for Yankees opening day…
Lillard might be out for the season…
This dueling organs is the highlight…….and the blonde sitting 5 rows behind Kidd gets honorable mention…
I’m with Pepper on both.
I’ve seen more defense played in the West 4th Street summer league games
Thank god OG dunked.
Can’t put this pesky frisky plucky scrappy team away.
Thank god OG dunked…
What a difference when the Knicks bother to exert some effort on defense.
Bridges 3pt stroke from above the break has been much improved lately.
So far this half is better
OG made a layup!
OG with the jam. I like that much better.
Another one for the highlight film…
Let’s hope Knicks don’t let this become a close game in the 4th quarter…
Kolek starts the fourth…
omg Tyler, what was that. 🤪
With an air ball from 5 ft…
