I feel like some of it is Mikal’s role being unclear. He’s supposed to be the third option but with OG and Hart it’s kind of like JB and KAT are option 1 and 2 and then those 3 guys are all the 3rd option but it’s not totally clear?

    Exactly.

There’s are only so many shot attempts in a game. So from time to time depending on matchups and other factors one or two of these guys is not going to get many shots. Initially, my thought was Hart would be 5th option and that would be fine because he brings necessary rebounding and playmaking to the table also. But he managed to remain effective scoring.

So what we want from OG and Bridges is consistently high level defense, take what the other team is giving us on any give night, score efficiently and maybe a little more effort on the boards when the other team is hitting the boards hard (though Towns and Hart have that covered most nights).

It’s OK if Bridges is not scoring close to 20 a night. If he does everyone will be whining that OG is only scoring 12 and vice versa. As long as they are taking smart shots, remaining efficent and playing defense we are fine.

I would say both could do a bit better than they have, but it’s hard to tell how much of that is just adjusting, playing too many minutes, injuries etc…

We need Mikal to be our Derrick White. The third or fourth option on offense, make 3’s when open and lock down your man on the defensive end.

(And I understand that’s a high bar, because White might be the most underrated player in the NBA, but I do think it’s realistic)

We need Mikal to shoot ~40% from 3 on 5 attempts per game and play great D. Period.

    He has not done that.

Start Mitch, KAT, OG, Deuce, Brunson – Mikal, Hart, Payne, Shamet, Precious off the bench in whatever order the game demands.

Mikal’s game as a Knick is just soft. He rarely creates his own shot, gets to the FT line on average once per game. Despite a high assisted basket percentage, his efficiency is mediocre. Has not shot the three well all season. He has made some good defensive plays here and there, but he shows flashes of good defense more than consistently strong play. Playmaking is down, rebounding is nonexistent.

Add it all up and it’s pretty clearly the worst season of his career. He’s just not doing all that much out there. I’d be looking to cut losses and convert him into something more useful. A contract extension for his decline phase seems like a brutally terrible idea.

Speaking of brutal…….Kyrie Irving is officially done for the season.

I just noticed that ESPN has a new aoi metric called net points created by Dean Oliver. Looks pretty interesting. Hopefully, someone smarter than me can do a deep dive into its merit.

What an unfortunate Dallas injury death spiral!

That team is still VERY good. It’s a shame they didn’t get to show it.

Look, maybe it will turn out that Doncic is every bit the lazy, self-destructive, locker room cancer Nico has made him out to be, and the Lakers will wind up regretting the extension they sign him to. But it sure feels like what we have here is an executive who is also a fitness nut, who simply couldn’t accept that his best player wasn’t as maniacal about diet and exercise as he was, and traded him away to prove some idiotic philosophical point.

And, if so, this sure feels like karma to me.

Add it all up and it’s pretty clearly the worst season of his career. He’s just not doing all that much out there. I’d be looking to cut losses and convert him into something more useful. A contract extension for his decline phase seems like a brutally terrible idea.

He’s 28 years old. His next contract would not be his “decline phase” or at least most of it would not be.

Plenty of good players have down years.

I’m not saying we should extend him. It depends on the price. But I also think it’s short sighted to give up on him completely just because he’s had a down year. We’ve seen some nice stretches of play.

For all we know this down year will all be erased with a really good playoff run.

Mikal has one more year on his contract, then his extension will kick in at age 30. You’re getting his age 30-33 seasons on that contract. I’ve seen enough of his play this year to give that a firm “no thanks.”

If we give Mikal a big market value extension, it will be solely because of the sunk cost fallacy. He is not a player I’d be looking to sign off the open market at that age.

I didn’t realize he had one more year. Hmm. That changes things a bit.

JK47, if he shows out in the playoffs and we get to the ECF or Finals because of that, would that change your mind?

I’m just curious where the line is for people.

Seems that, on average, our opponents have only played their benches 17.2 minutes to our 11.8 minutes. That’s not so bad (albeit a bit surprising!). But their benches are outscoring ours by 36.1 points to 21.6 points. Seems relatively significant, no?

These numbers overall seem odd to me. Am I using a faulty site again? (It’s different than the one I used for the draft.)

Kyrie Irving with nothing to do but watch videos for a year is a terrifying thought.

Based on the quote from John Hollinger below, we should expect a two-way signing today.

While you were chilling and catching up on college guys this weekend, NBA teams made 20 official transactions in 48 hours, and more will be added to the list on Monday.

What was that all about? I thought the trade deadline passed?

It has, but the catalyst here is the NBA’s deadline for signing two-way contracts on March 4 — this Tuesday. As a result, teams are furiously reshaping the back ends of their rosters — cutting loose two-ways they don’t want, and creating openings to sign players that interest them more. The secondary effect has been several teams signed two-ways to roster deals in that span, in some cases (such as with the Clippers’ Jordan Miller) also driven by the necessity that they had already used all 50 of their active-roster days as two-ways.

Also a notable quote from the same article is:

Incidentally, there should be one more mini-spree of two-way promotions the final week of the season. Teams with open roster spots often promote a two-way at that time to sign them to a contract that extends into the following season; the 20 teams headed to the postseason also are incentivized to do this because two-ways are ineligible for the postseason.

But we can only do this if we don’t fill our last roster spot now.

    The quotes are from

Doogie, imho the minutes thing has at least some merit but it mostly overblown. Our bench has been compromised all year. First, Mitch has been out until now, and no one could really fill his role. Second, Precious was out with a hammy for a bunch of games, leaving only Sims and Huk as bench bigs. Third, Shamet blew out his shoulder and is only now rounding into form. Fourth, Deuce was out for a few games and took a few more games to regain his form. Finally, OG was out for a month and that put the onus on other starters to make up for his presence on both ends, since no on on the bench other than Precious qualified and he is a very poor representation of what OG brings.

Add all of that up, and you have mostly a very shallow and often ineffective bench for most of the season. Combine it with Thibs’ well-known tendencies, and you have the minutes distribution numbers like the ones you posted.

Hopefully now that everyone (save Huk) is at worst a bit dinged up and I would hope to see some leveling out of those numbers. We’ll see!

Mikal was bound to be a worse fit in a team with KAT. On offense, he can create, but why are you going to let him do that if you can run the offense through KAT? On defense, he can defend very well his man and play the passing lanes, but opposing teams are going to stick to a two man game between their PG and C, because we give easy points this way. Mikal cannot help with centers, and he is miscast defending point guards. Then there is the low 3pt%, but that should improve.

IMO, against the Celtics, our best bet is to have Brunson, Deuce, Mikal, OG, and Mitch on the floor, and Mikal makes much more sense in that kind of lineup.

And cue the mavericks exit to Vegas…

I could be wrong, but it doesn’t make any sense since I’m pretty sure Miriam Adelson didn’t by the Mavs for the hoops aspect, but rather to get a mega casino approved in Dallas.

Carpetbagging the team to LV isn’t the best way to win friends and influence people in cowboy land.

I just noticed that ESPN has a new aoi metric called net points created by Dean Oliver. Looks pretty interesting. Hopefully, someone smarter than me can do a deep dive into its merit.

Seems interesting. They don’t give much detail into how it works beyond “we use play-by-play data”.

On a per 100 play basis, Luke Kornet is the 3rd best player in the league and 19th in total net points.

In per 100, Brandon Clarke edges out Jalen Brunson.

    I’m skeptical.

I’m not engaging in the hot takes on Mikal beyond they sound an awful lot like the hot takes from the same sources that have since gone spectacularly awry. Mikal will never be worth what we gave up for him, but he’s a fine player for what he is getting paid and his next contract will also likely be just fine.

Carpetbagging the team to LV isn’t the best way to win friends and influence people in cowboy land.

There are rumblings in the personal trainer community in Dallas (they hear everything) that there is some shadenfraude to be had in the posturing for a new arena.

It’s insane to me having watched him this season that Mikal ever averaged ~4 FTA a game, let alone that he did it in the two immediately preceding seasons. Dude avoids contact in downright Ntilikinian fashion.

That and his defense often not being what it was made out to be have been the two most disappointing aspects of the Mikal experience thus far. I actually think his shotmaking has been more or less as advertised, though I wish he would stop tinkering with his three point form. He’s a reasonably potent “get you a bucket” option when all else fails–his midrange shooting has been excellent.

But excelling in the midrange and nowhere else is notoriously a one-way ticket to 100 TS+ land, exactly where Mikal has resided this season.

IIRC he claims this is all intentional and based on his playoff experience–he thinks FTA dry up in the playoffs and the midrange reigns supreme. Well…I’m skeptical, but hey, if he has a big playoffs I’ll forgive any and all moments of Ntikinism from him in the regular season.

    3 quick thoughts:

    1. Godspeed, Kyrie. He was finally playing the way his talent dictates consistently, and without LeBron. As a basketball fan- you hate to see that injury for him.
    2. I wonder what our guys in Westchester can do for Davis and Beauchamp. 2 guys on that squad with 1st round pedigree on the wing. 1 of whom is a legit 6’7″. I like the moves. If we can make something out of one of those guys, we win.
    3. I am ecstatic that Mitch is back. I know he’s not ready for starter’s minutes, but maybe Thibs should start him now and move Hart to the second unit to help push the pace so the guys can get used to those roles before the playoffs? Mitch doesn’t have to play 30 minutes until he’s ready, but if Thibs wants him to start beside KAT, I think he should start getting them minutes together now at the very least

Yeah it drives me crazy when Mikal gets a pass going downhill and never takes it all the way to the basket. It’s not like he’s 5’11” or something.

Even though his mid range jumper is pretty effective, it would be nice if he could at least try and attack the rim once in a while. Also helps in maybe getting opposing players in foul trouble.

If we have to sign a two-way deal today, I would guess it will be Davis. Again, the chances of him becoming anything are awfully slim, but you have to hope that the combination of the pedigree and your superior ecosystem(*) might be able to unlock something in him.

(*) While the Rose administration hasn’t been perfect, how remarkable is it that we can feel like we have a good infrastructure for developing talent?

Bridges takes 20% of his shots within three feet of the basket and makes 77% of them from that distance. I’m not sure where the “never takes it all the way to the basket” sentiment comes from.

I think it’s totally fair to criticize Mikal for his aversion to drawing fouls. He seems to prefer fading away from 10-12 feet to attacking the rim. But when you are shooting 59% from 2, it’s hard to criticize that all that much.

The thing that is killing his TS% is his shooting from 3, and in particular, his shooting from above the break. He is taking 46% of his 3’s from the corner and hitting a very respectable 43% of them. But his overall 3pt% is only 35%, and that is just not going to cut it. Even if he got to 4FTA/36 and hit them at 90%, it’s not going to change his TS% very much. In the years he got to that mark, his 2pt% was 60 or more points lower than it is now.

If he were shooting 38% or higher from 3, no one would be complaining about his offense. I think it’s fair to wonder who the real Mikal is from 3…is he strictly a corner guy or can he become more consistent all around the arc? For me, that’s the key for him being worth anything more than he’s getting paid right now.

There are rumblings in the personal trainer community in Dallas (they hear everything) that there is some shadenfraude to be had in the posturing for a new arena.

Could you put that in English for the slow boys like me? I’m guessing the personal trainer community in Dallas probably isn’t the biggest supporter of Trump’s biggest donor. 🙂

Bridges takes 20% of his shots within three feet of the basket and makes 77% of them from that distance. I’m not sure where the “never takes it all the way to the basket” sentiment comes from.

The frequency is in the 21st percentile among forwards, and 35th percentile among wings (both per CTG). So yeah, that’s not a lot.

As to Mikal’s defense, he is best suited to be a switchable 2 rather than a 3. I know that positional definitions are more blurred than ever, but there is still some merit to them. That’s why I think that either KAT needs to play the 4 or we have to get a NAZ Reid-type big who can play both the 4 and 5 defensively, and who can stretch the floor enough to not be sloughed off of and gum up the paint.

The front line of KAT and any 3 of OG, Hart, and Mikal can’t be successful in playoff-level defense on a team with Brunson as your PG unless the other team is going small or is also weak on defense. That should be pretty obvious by now.

Out of all these options this summer:

    A. Trade Mikal for a less superfluous player

    B. Bring back Mikal for the final year of his contract without an extension and see if he plays better before committing

    C. Offer Mikal an extension at the level he’s expecting

The last one makes by far the least sense.

was a huge Mikel fan prior to him putting on our uni…

his advanced stats don’t so great for now the second season in a row…

I still think he’s a starting caliber player (not quite sure why though at the moment)…his value with the knicks though becomes questionable when you have 2 less costly options (josh and deuce) that can fit in to that slot and who can play better…

I don’t think mikal’s been terrible for us, it’s just that we have 2 better options at the moment…

I don’t expect us to move either of our 2 big recent acquisitions before next season, if we did though…

Could you put that in English for the slow boys like me?

Aaaagh. (Slow Boys is a great title)

From some very sweaty “gossip” (conspirigossip) I heard…new owners of the team were not getting what they wanted in negotiations for this very lucrative opportunity to swindle the poor of Texas. They threatened to rip one of the few culturally relevant parts of Dallas out of the ground if they didn’t get what they wanted. ( it gets hazier here). The city side said something like you would never- you’re not that diabolical. The casino heads were like, pooof, where’s Luca, bitches?… something about tanking value that was meaningless in their portfolio.

The person mumbled this seemed halfway lucid. Not my expertise so I was just like “can’t wait to tell someone who can be like you’re dumb for saying this or for someone to be like oooo why are people like that?”

The Mavericks revealed on Monday that they are raising season-ticket prices for next season, just weeks after dealing star Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers.

wow, things have really gone to hell for mavs’ fans…well, at least they can feel good about helping to bring a new casino to the area…yeah, bet that feels good to them…

Those %’s on Bridges 3’s where it suggests pretty poor % on non-corner…seem to jibe with my eye test (at least lately cuz i can’t remember much past a few days) that most of his above the break are either on the fastbreak (and I generally feel that they are bad shots as there is no hope for an offensive rebound) and/or early in the shot clock (as if he feels like he has “to get his” type of heave)…said differently those in the corner seem like in the flow of the offense (you know the Thibs offense of your not brunson or kat so go stand in the corner) where the others are often “forced”…who knows..

I think Z-man’s analysis of Mikal’s offense is right – if he weren’t so bad on above-the-break 3s his contribution would feel fine. But while he’s better not than early in the year on D, it’s still only adequate with occasional flashes of good, and that’s probably not going to change much.

Going forward, though, we have to forget the cost of acquisition and consider only the player we have and the best way to get value from his contract. A trade shouldn’t be off the table, but if Hubert is wrong and his value has tanked a bit (or stagnated) and we could bring him back at $30mil/per, that seems OK to me.

I’m a little skeptical about Mikal’s midrange game being more valuable in the postseason but we’ll see how it pans out. Maybe the fit isn’t great here. I’m just not seeing a whole lot to get excited about, and at this point I’ve watched an awful lot of Mikal Bridges. There are games where he looks terrific and games where he seems to vanish on both ends.

What he looks like, to be honest, is a relatively generic wing, the kind of player you should be able to find at a fraction of what it is likely going to cost to extend him.

If his trade value has tanked, it stands to reason that giving him $30M should be off the table.

raven’s mission to delay planetary decay and this mavs’ ownership thing to reshape the area in its preferred image reminds me of a feeling i had recently visiting the small picturesque community of Menlo Park…

was at a place called Fremont park, pretty little place…saw a plaque commemorating some military folks camping out there a couple hundred years ago, or something like that…

in the corner of the park stood a few older redwood trees, some smaller redwoods nearby just starting out…

was taking photos of the trees when I suddenly started feeling sad…surrounding these trees where all the signs of human “progress” and habitation…

thought about the abundance of the New York harbor that existed a thousand years ago…imagined the ‘South Bay area’ out here as being equally ecologically gifted…

a land of absolute abundance…I’m always thinking about the ohlone peoples who’ve been living out here since – tens of thousands of years ago (forever)…think about the wolves that were found ritually buried from about 4,000 years ago and how the people at the time may have domesticated those animals for their use…so cool…

and now, a small pretty park, lots of people and pavement…no casino there though, at least not yet…

it’s funny, when I finally met up with my sis, all I could think to say was what a pretty place it was, not how how truly sad a sight it was to see those beautiful and majestic trees marginalized so greatly…

Not that it would make a huge difference, but Mikal has 11 “heaves” for the season (made 0). That’s as many as he’s had for his entire career before this. Absent most of those it would add around 1% to his overall 3p% and more than that to his non corner 3s.

One thing that should factor in to Mikal’s above the break 3’s is that he has taken 11 heaves from beyond half court and missed all of them. Not a huge difference, but without them his TS% goes up to .579 and his 3pt% goes up to 36.3%. Both are just a percentage point south of his career averages. If you want to take issue with that, look no further than his usage, which is back down below 20%. One would hope that he was being more selective, leading to higher percentages, but it isn’t translating that way, at least not yet.

Leon should have his ears open for any offer for any player on the roster, as he did when KAT became available. If someone makes a great offer for Mikal + whoever and whatever, Leon should go for it. If not, Leon should negotiate the best deal he can to keep Mikal in the fold. If he thinks the price is too high, he let him play out next season and either trade him at the deadline or take the risk of either signing him as a UFA or losing him for nothing.

I don’t think that it is worth one minute of thought at the moment. The playoffs are going to be a very revealing measuring stick for everyone on the roster not named Jalen Brunson, who isn’t going anywhere no matter what. For now, a Mikal extension at 3/$100M or so doesn’t seem exorbitant to me. At worst he becomes salary filler in a trade, or will require a minor asset to dump; at best, he goes back to being a better version of Mikal than what we have seen here, which I think is a strong possibility. He’s smart, healthy, and a high-character hard worker, i.e. the kind of guy you roll the dice on.

It’s certainly not everything if a player is just…….well, not any good at all…….but Mikal is not that. Could he be playing better? For sure, he could. But “smart, healthy, high character, hard worker, etc.” are all things that we should probably be giving a little bit more weight to. It’s all valuable stuff.

Geo, not sure if this ever came up but if you haven’t watched Scavenger’s Reign yet it’s so so very very good.

But it’s meaningless for anyone here to be claiming that a particular player has high character or is a hard worker. We’re not on the team or in the locker room, people just say this about guys they like. Hell, people call RJ Barrett a hard worker all the time ignoring that Thibodeau has said on multiple occasions that he doesn’t practice often enough or hard enough.

Fair, I s’pose. We can only go by generally what we hear about a player. Usually we only hear “bad news” about a player, so in the absence of that, we tend to assume that it’s all good news. But at the moment, I tend to believe “good news” about Mikal Bridges.

But it’s meaningless for anyone here to be claiming that a particular player has high character or is a hard worker. We’re not on the team or in the locker room, people just say this about guys they like

No, it’s not meaningless. Multiple sources of who is a hard worker and who slacks off are valid pieces of data. And having a high character is something, I suggest, that every poster is able to evaluate based on thousands of minutes of being on a team, in and out of games as well as community stuff..without being in the locker room.

I like Mikal a lot but the team has needs and Leon’s out of picks.

    Who you gonna trade?

Deuce at $4M vs Mikal at $30M is a pretty easy choice for me.

Mikal Bridges is an empty notebook to me. He seems like a really nice guy (big puppy eyes, lovely smile, generally positive demeanor). But he also moves like an extremely smooth and energetic praying mantis, and has bizarrely eclectic hand wiggles and mouth gestures, especially when he makes a shot. I generally embrace the weird (big electronic hug out to Clarence!), so my tendency is to like the guy. But I don’t entirely get him.

On the other hand, while I do tend to agree with the criticisms leveled here (disappears a lot, needs to shoot better from the top of the arc, seems to avoid contact like it’s still the midst of the Covid outbreak), for the team we have currently constructed I do think that ‘Good Mikal’ is a near perfect fit. He just needs to find some consistency from game to game and I’ll be perfectly happy.

    Who you gonna trade?

Deuce at $4M vs Mikal at $30M is a pretty easy choice for me.

Yeah, but flip side. Deuce might be able to get you something pretty good, no?

No, it’s not meaningless. Multiple sources of who is a hard worker and who slacks off are valid pieces of data. And having a high character is something, I suggest, that every poster is able to evaluate based on thousands of minutes of being on a team, in and out of games as well as community stuff..without being in the locker room.

What sources are we basing “hard work” on? How fresh are those sources? If someone 5 years ago said he was a hard worker is that still valid today?

And hard disagree about character. There’s a million stories about people, both famous and regular, who publicly are nice but privately are scumbags.

While I don’t put any Machiavellian machination beyond a billionaire I can opine why that statement from your sweaty friends has the whiff of mendacity.

First of all , rich folks don’t generally light their assets on fire intentionally. If they move the MAVs out of the area they might as well graze cattle on that property in Irving.

More importantly, while getting a zoning change or something through the Tx Legislature is a mere matter of judiciously placed envelops, to get a casino approved, will take a referendum by vote of the public and that will not be easy.

In a liberal paradise NY it took Yonkers Raceway 20 years to just get slots put into a property that was already a gambling establishment and the voters of NY voted it down twice. Good luck getting it passed in Baptist heavy Texas… These folks know it is going to be a decade long process and intentionally tanking the team is counterproductive to the long term goal.

Come on, we are not talking about stories but about players we see in real time. Are you telling me that you are 50:50 if Jalen Brunson has a high character or is a scumbag?

    1. What stories are we talking about?

    2. Name an NBA player who doesn’t love admitted rapist Kobe Bryant.

That makes a lot of sense, Mr. Fibularis. Stranger things… tho. I’m mostly being cheeky about it because the whole Luca thing has the fanbase turning over rocks.

    re: Mikal Bridges,

Mikal has been quetly making game winning defensive stops that have been going unappreciated. Dont have exact data but the block vs Vucevic and stops vs Hero & Morant were nothing to sneeze at.

FFS, you brought up stories, I brought up first hand observation. And doubly. FFS, WTF does something about Kobe, who last I checked was not an admitted rapist and shitloads of NBA players are not on record as loving him, have anything to do with an assessment each fan makes of character?

    FROM SHAMS:

The New York Knicks are claiming former Celtics forward Anton Watson on a two-way NBA deal, his agents Adie von Gontard and Daveed Cohen of Young Money APAA tell ESPN.

This is the first I’ve heard of Watson, I must admit.

Still waiting on that 15th man…

What firsthand observations?! Who’s out there talking about Bridges being a hardworker? And I don’t make any claims about any players’ characters because I don’t know these people. I have no idea if Bridges is a good, hard working person of high character and neither does anyone else here. I hate these dumb narratives that fans talk about when none of us have any idea if they could possibly be true.

    Vecenie:

STRENGTHS: Watson has great size for a combo forward, which is important because most of his minutes will likely come at the 4. He measured at 6-7 1/2 without
shoes with a 7-foot wingspan and an 8-9 standing reach at the G League Elite Camp. He’s not a monster athlete, but he’s functionally a better one on the court than
his testing numbers indicate. He’s a versatile defensive player who would have easily earned all-defense honors the last two seasons had the WCC named them. On
the ball, he’s capable of taking on many different assignments. He dealt well with wings and forwards at Gonzaga, yet also showed an ability to use his strength when
switched onto post-up bigs and his quickness to stay in front of guards. He navigates screens well considering his size, with good, fluid hips. I felt he was one of the
few players in college basketball who could switch 1 through 5. His hands are disruptive. He has great hand-eye coordination, and he uses his length well. He has
strong anticipatory skills and a detailed understanding of scouting reports on and off the ball. He developed into a solid shot blocker when scrambling from the opposite side. On the perimeter, he always closes out on balance and gets his hands high to contest shots. He is sharp at positioning himself to play 1-on-2 on the
opposite side from the ball. He averaged 1.5 steals and 0.7 blocks per game.
Offensively, Watson improved over his college years. He made 73.4 percent of his shots at the rim; while a lot of those came in transition, he still exceeded 70 percent
at the rim in half-court situations, per Synergy. His hands are fantastic. He times his cuts well on the back line and maintains great body control through contact while
maintaining his touch. He gets up for finishes and offensive rebounds more than his vertical testing numbers would indicate, with a better second jump than one
would expect. He improved as a passer over his career. He reads plays well and was effective when passing out of double teams. He throws live-dribble passes with
his right hand well. He knows how to drive a closeout and keep the defense in rotation by attacking the help man and kicking it out to his assignment. He can throw
passes on the move and weighs them well for each situation. He averaged 2.6 assists per game this season and has always been a positive assist-to-turnover ratio
    player.

WEAKNESSES: First and foremost, is he comfortable enough with the ball in his hands to get guarded? He’s a great cutter but isn’t as comfortable as an on-ball player.
He had some moments attacking closeouts and making passing reads off cuts when not finishing himself, but he didn’t look comfortable dribbling in anything other
than in a straight line. He has never been able to handle a high level of usage at the college level, so he won’t be a shot creator in the NBA.
The second concern: At what level will his perimeter shot settle? Watson has never been comfortable taking shots from distance. While he made 41.2 percent from 3
this season, it was on fewer than two attempts per game — almost all of those came directly off the catch, per Synergy. He doesn’t shoot off movement, and I
wouldn’t want to put him in any direct actions to generate 3s because it takes him too long to load into his shot. His feet seemed to get tied up any time he tried to
shoot off the bounce. He dips the ball far down his body, and while he has a clean release when open, it can falter when he must speed his motion up. I don’t think he
can counter to score once run off the line. He can pass on the move, but he doesn’t have an in-between scoring game now. Can he make shots more consistently?

SUMMARY: Watson is one of my sneaky favorites in this class, and I have a two-way grade on him. I think he can defend within an NBA scheme right away and has
potential to add a lot of value on that end of the court if his offense improves enough to keep him on the floor. He’s switchable and long, plus has great strength and
good hip flexibility to stay on-balance in space. His help defense is sharp, and he is a good scramble defender. Offensively, I don’t love his skill package, even if he
maintains his ability to cut and finish around the rim. Shooting is the key for me. There are some signs of Watson becoming a capable shooter, as he made 41 percent
on limited attempts this year. But it’s hard to buy into his jumper becoming a consistent NBA weapon given that he turns 24 this year and has always been a low
volume attempter. If he can improve his shooting to the point where he consistently hits corner 3s, his defense may be valuable enough to stick in the NBA. That will
take some time for his jumper to come around. Still, I’d be willing to bet a two-way deal on expediting that process, because if it does, Watson has some value in the
    NBA.

Net Points does not think very highly of Mikal. Does it weigh character too?

Net Points does not think very highly of Mikal. Does it weigh character too?

I skimmed through the ratings earler this afternoon and I saw a few that didn’t pass the smell test so badly I just stopped looking.

For example, it has Towns as a plus on defense and OG as a minus.

I have no clue how it works, but my first guess is that’s related to defensive rebounding. Defensive rebounding is obviously important and is part of defense, but it’s also role and who else is on the court with you.

From above when Net Points was mentioned:

Seems interesting. They don’t give much detail into how it works beyond “we use play-by-play data”.

On a per 100 play basis, Luke Kornet is the 3rd best player in the league and 19th in total net points.

In per 100, Brandon Clarke edges out Jalen Brunson.

    I’m skeptical.

It made me laugh to read that most of Watson’s minutes will likely come at the 4. So when he plays 6 NBA minutes total, 4 of those minutes will come at the 4. Got it.

Anton has shot poorly from 3 in the gleague:

    * 31.9% on 213 3pt attempts
    * 65.3% on 43 ft attempts

Lots of g-league Knicks have seemingly improved their shot, e.g., Toppin, Baugh, Okeke, and probably some others have shot pretty well this season. So maybe we can make him a viable depth piece, but probably not by the end of this season.

I mean, Mikal doesn’t seem to be an asshole and he isn’t disruptive, but I don’t think that’s something that should really earn you a lot of bonus points. He’s a professional. Likable enough. But let’s not act like those are special and/or rare qualities.

I was sure they would sign another two-way player like they just did, but I’m not convinced they will fill the fifteenth roster spot right away. They might decide to wait til the end of the season after they see how the new additions do.

I mean, Hart is kind of disruptive and kind of an asshole sometimes, but I’m *really* glad that he’s on our team. He’s the right kind of disruptive asshole. 🙂

Mikal’s value on a team with OG and KAT is his ability to stay healthy coupled with his sort of okay shot creation and solid PoA defense. He’s the NBAs most expensive redundancy.

He is good, but he’s not so good as to be indispensable on a healthy team.

KAT is out against the warriors. Edwards: “Thibs said he’s not sure if KAT will make the trip out west tomorrow. Said “he needs some time right now.””

Maybe it wasn’t such a great idea to put him back in a game that was basically over after he tweaked his knee. Might have been better to give him a few games off. smh

Might as well play Mitch a full 20-25 before he’s ready and break him down too.

Now they are saying personal reasons for Towns?

That’s better news than thinking it’s the knee again.

Honestly, I’d rather hear that about KAT than have it suppressed for the sake of having him out there in games that probably won’t mean much of the standings. I just wish Huk was still available to keep Thibs from blowing out Mitch.

Knicks announced yesterday that KAT was questionable for personal reasons.

Poor guy had so much family stuff to deal with over the last few years, I hope it’s nothing of that nature. He’s a high character guy and a hard worker. Oh wait, I forgot, I can’t say that because it’s dumb.

Effing national TV again. I hate that the Knicks are good.

Raven, why do you hate it if the Knicks are on national TV? (I hate it myself because then my girlfriend can’t watch the game on League Pass unless it is on NBA-TV. I doubt that’s the same reason that you don’t like it.)

I watch on NBA TV but they block national televised games, so I don’t get Clyde, I have to go to Hulu and watch it on TNT and that little pissant Greg Anthony.
