Baseball is a weird sport when it comes to the playoffs, it’s almost like the regular season means nothing. The Dodgers and the Phillies were the dominant teams in the NL this year and they’re both on the brink of elimination. And last year the Diamondbacks were in the World Series after winning 84 games while Atlanta got knocked out in the first round after winning 104 games.

So different from the NBA, where it’s almost unheard of for a team that squeaked into the playoffs to win the chip.

It’d take another 162 games each round to determine who was the better team in baseball

Is getting the bye in baseball really a good thing? Phillies/Dodgers didn’t play for a week. Padres and Mets haven’t had any time off.

Also Phillies were 33 -33 in the last 66 games they played. Since the all star break Mets and Padres both were very hot so it’s not as crazy as you think. Padres won 93 games..

When your best players only get about 5 chances a game to influence it, rather than 25-30, you’re either really happy (Mets, Royals) or really worried (Yankees, Phillies). I grew up when you needed about 95 wins to make the post-season which meant most of the time I was done by mid-June. Like it much better this way.

So who gets these final two roster spots? Okeke? Toppin the Younger? Hukporti? Baugh? Warren?

So who gets these final two roster spots? Okeke? Toppin the Younger? Hukporti? Baugh? Warren?

We literally cannot afford to have a 15th man, because that would take us over the second apron, which wouldn’t be allowed given the various moves we made this offseason. So we’ll have 14 guys, with Shamet as the 13th, and, most likely, Hukporti as the 14th. Toppin and Okeke would be too expensive, given their ages and amount of service time. The 14th spot has to go to a second-round rookie.

The only way we’ll have breathing room later in the season is if Mitch or someone else on a significant contract gets traded, and we bring back less money than we send out.

it’s almost like the regular season means nothing

    Not almost. It means nothing.

Side note to Z-Man and anyone else who finds themselves in Saratoga… my latest partnership finds me spending the fall up here and have found that King’s Tavern is the best bar to watch sports and 9 Maple is the best bar to enjoy a whisky from their extensive list.

Anyway I was out watching the Mets game yesterday a night after watching the yankees and the fun delta is just enormous. And I think it has been that way for a very long time.

I’m beyond tired of the championship-or-bust ethic that surrounds the Yankees. October is random and it should be fun. The Yankees haven’t been fun since 2019. Poor Aaron Judge seems overwhelmed by the pressure of the stupid Jeter mantra. I want to sit him down and make him watch Giannis talk about failure on a loop.

This was my assumption. I suppose Toppin will get a two-way spot.

the Dodgers have been the best franchise in baseball for like 12 years and have one WS win, and that was in a weird covid year

Poor Aaron Judge seems overwhelmed by the pressure of the stupid Jeter mantra. I want to sit him down and make him watch Giannis talk about failure on a loop.

I think Rogers will be fine.

He’s coming off a serious injury, a very long layoff and did almost nothing in training camp. Plus, he’s old. It will probably take him a little longer to get back to whatever his peak form is at this age.

If this was the NBA and a player missed a whole season with an Achilles injury and then didn’t do much in camp, we wouldn’t know what he has left until the all-star break.

All that said, I think the talent on the team is overrated and overhyped.

The offensive line still sucks. They can’t run at all and at various times Rogers has been under a lot of pressure early, getting banged, sacked etc.. I was at the Bronco game and it was very noticeable.

If they can straighten out the offensive line I think they can still make a good run at the playoffs in the second half of the season when Rogers should start rounding into form. But they aren’t going anywhere if they can’t run and can’t protect him.

Thanks Hubert. I have been going to 9 Maple for years, most recently last Friday, it’s awesome! They had like 10 varieties of Laphroaig alone! Also excellent jazz.

I’ll keep King’s Tavern in mind. The weekend after next is Family Weekend, hopefully the Mets will still be alive by then.

Ha, if you mean Oct 4th I was there, too.

Strat, solid points but wrong Aaron 🙂

The Knicks announce they’ve signed Moses Brown to an Exhibit 10 deal

FYI for you fans of the Westchester squad.

That’s funny! I was sitting at the bar with my wife and was mesmerized by the bartender who was cranking out espresso martinis by the dozen. Was that you ordering them?

Moses Brown: I like it. He’s true center size (as opposed to the Precious tweener PF/C size), and he’s from New York City and went to Archbishop Molloy.

Yeah, I didn’t know why we were suddenly talking about Aaron Ro(d)gers, either.

Well, the regular season still means SOMETHING, as the Mets came very close to missing the playoffs entirely despite being the best team in the majors for the last three and a half months of the season. Then of course the best teams get first round byes, and the last two wild card teams don’t get a home game in the first round.

But for the most part, once you’re in, you’re at the whim of the baseball gods. Since they have added more teams and rounds to the playoffs, it has gotten even harder for any one team to run the gauntlet and avoid whatever team is getting hot at the right time.

It has been this way pretty much forever. Most of the best regular season teams in MLB history did not win the World Series. 1906 Cubs. 1954 Indians. That Mariners team that won 116 games. And so on.

    The offensive line still sucks.

Rodgers won’t last long if they don’t fix this… Look at the difference in the Giants… 86 sacks last year with three QBs getting knocked out of games 5 times. This season with a competent OL they look like a professional football team and the QB is cromulent (I finally get to use KB’s favorite term) at the very least.

It has been this way pretty much forever. Most of the best regular season teams in MLB history did not win the World Series. 1906 Cubs. 1954 Indians. That Mariners team that won 116 games. And so on.

You could add the 1960 Yankees to that list… they outscored the Pirates 55-27 and lost in 7 games.

    @ShamsCharania
Dallas Mavericks guard Dante Exum is expected to miss three months after undergoing right wrist surgery, sources tell ESPN. Extended early loss to Mavericks backcourt.

That was not me. I was there on the early side with the after work crowd at a table with a roll up backgammon set teaching a young coworker how to play and drink whisky.

Yeah Brown got my attention with a 23-rebound game a few years ago. He could be useful if we can find space for him.

Then of course the best teams get first round byes

Those are terrible. The four best teams do nothing for an entire week while the whole sport shuts down for a bunch of 80-something win wild card teams.

And then those wild card teams get pampered. First they get a day off to rest their bullpen. Then they get another 1-2 days off to reconfigure their pitching rotation. Then they get a short best-of-5 series against a team that needs a couple days to shake off the rust.

This is the dumbest system anyone has ever created to determine a champion. That’s why you end up with Diamondbacks vs Rangers in a world series no one wants to watch.

Crazy part is no team in MLB has repeated as World Series champs since the Yankees three peat from 1998-2000.

“Those are terrible….This is the dumbest system anyone has ever created to determine a champion.”

Sorta on point, but reminds me of the football Euro 2016 championships, when France didn’t have to go through the qualifying stage games because they were hosts, but insisted on doing so (and had the rules changed) because they viewed the “perk” as a detriment.

I hate to expand the postseason even more but if you’re the top seed I think you’re better off having a short home series against a shitty 8 seed instead of sitting around all week doing nothing. If the Yanks lose 2 out of 3 at home to the 82-win Twins, so be it. At least the playing field is level.

I dunno, I wouldn’t say this system favored the Mets, who had to burn tons of bullpen just to get into the playoffs, had no rest between the last day of the regular season and game one against Milwaukee, then had to play in Milwaukee three games straight with no day off, then had I believe one day off to rest for the series in Philly. Their bullpen is maybe just now somewhat close to rested. They had to go essentially with a bullpen game in game one of the LDS, against probably the best pitcher in the National League!

I’ll take the bye, home field, and the extra rest for my pitchers any time.

I think the addition of the wild card was entirely justified since you can be a legitimately great team and win one fewer game than another great team in your division, and I’ve kind of begrudgingly come around on the second wild card because in at least most seasons it’s still a pretty good team.

The third wild card though? Dunno, I think in my preferred system it would at least have to be triggered by 90 wins or something.

The MLB playoffs are definitely largely random. The superior team probably has a 55-60% chance of winning a given series, if that. It does make me interested in the question of whether there are any commonalities between teams that have performed well in the playoffs. I believe the existing empirics on this say…no, there aren’t. You just have to get there as many times as possible and hope for the best. I’d be interested in seeing any contrary data though.

The Mets had that weird double header, though, which put them and Atlanta at a legit disadvantage.

Look at the Royals. They got two days off. Game 1. Day off. Game 2. Day off. Games 3 & 4. Day off. Game 5. And they get to play a team that hasn’t swung a bat in a week.

That’s a pretty nice setup for a team that won 86 games.

The third wild card means that 12 of 30 teams get in the playoffs, which is too many for my liking. I mean really 8 teams seems appropriate. Three division winners and one wild card team per league. I don’t make the rules though.

Yeah, that is definitely true, the Mets had an Act Of God that made the end of the regular season and the early playoffs more difficult.

The Mets have had these little flourishes of Miracle Mets play before but have never, in franchise history, been able to parlay that into making a long run of playoff appearances. It has always been Miracle Mets for a year or maybe two, then people start getting hurt and old and the prospects all bust and crummy free agents are brought in to paper over the holes and the team goes inevitably back into the shitter until the next round of “Miracle Mets” many years later.

This time feels different. Cohen/Stearns/Mendoza seem like they are headed for some long term success. Stearns put this team together with spare parts he found in the drawer and players he might as well have found in his local Buy Nothing group.

I think the addition of the wild card was entirely justified since you can be a legitimately great team and win one fewer game than another great team in your division, and I’ve kind of begrudgingly come around on the second wild card because in at least most seasons it’s still a pretty good team.

Yeah, and it was fun to have those single elimination wild card games.

They’ve gone too far with three, but I can’t imagine them ever going back. A 16 team field is crazy but it makes more sense than this.

Getting a week off after a gruelling season, getting to set your rotation and not having to run the risk of losing a short series is actually worse than playing the WC series does not pass the smell test. Guys don’t hit worse after the all star break.

I just want to offer pre-season props to DRed’s pizza avatar. Still looks delicious.

It speaks to the level of anxiety this Yankees team inspires that I’m seriously thinking about watching the Knicks tonight instead.

    @JLEdwardsIII
Thibs said Deuce is under the weather and won’t play tonight.

By gawd, is that Tyler Kolek’s music?!?!?!

Guys don’t hit worse after the all star break.

If you actually calculated the MLB batting average on the first two days after the ASB and compared it to the other 160 games I’d love to see what you found.

The ASB is 4 days, of course, not 7.

I would like to see the end of the roster guys get some burn tonight (Okeke and Warren).

Alan believe it or not I’m pretty calm and confident Yankees still winning this series.

Even if they lose tonight 2 years ago against Cleveland they lost Games 2 and 3 in heartbreaking fashion but Cole dominated Game 4 and they found a way to win Game 5.

After making the first 6 outs on 16 pitches I might be changing my mind about my confidence in the Yankees.

Alan can go watch some over-manicured and over-muscled dudes in pinstripes play in some boring post-season playoff game — me, I got me some Clyde and a pre-season Knicks game!

I only know what I read here and what I’ve seen in the last 2 minutes. Based on that, the Mets are better than the Yankees.

Starting to see what 3 switchable shutdown perimeter defenders can do, and it’s incredible

ess-dog, was just thinking the same thing. It’s like they hang down to the ground.

He’s no Desmond Bane, that’s for sure.

What a moment for Lindor and if your the Phillies manager how do you not bring in Wheeler if he was available?

OG trying to get his is not pretty. Twice now.

I don’t think he has the offensive upside to tap into that he seems to think he has.

It’s a bit my turn/your turn right now. Could be a while before they start playing smooth team ball, at least on offense.

OG trying to get his is not pretty. Twice now.

I was hoping he would come back with an improved handle but I guess that fantasy is over.

Dang, Carrington looks pretty good. The Wiz really need to dump Poole and Kuz. Those guys are dead weight.

Kolek passed up a wide-open 10-footer to keep moving and pass out (for a missed three). Bad Kolek. Take the shot.

Judge has smoked the ball twice tonight for outs and Soto hit a 409 ft flyout.

Kolek with the lovely layup on a fast break, then bricks a three.

And a brilliant feed to Huk for the slam!

    And finally, the 10-foot pull-up!

Well that’s weird. They’re doing ‘the bongo’ with the fans, but with no superimposed bongo drum image, so people are just waving their hands.

Gleyber hit a fly ball I think would be a dong in at least 15 parks too. Kauffman’s dimensions are violence.

    Huckporti better make this team.

Begley said he will the 14th man. He said Shamet and Huck are making the team.

Huk looks good, but even he isn’t the type of rim protector we’re used to. It’s such a different defensive look for us.

I’m pleasantly surprised by the production from the bottom half of the Yankees order.

OK it’s getting harder now for me to defend Judge’s pathetic postseason numbers.

Towns looks a little overweight to me. I suspect he’s not in Thib’s caliber pre season shape. Brunson is!!

It’s going to take time for the starting unit to gel, opening night might be rough.

I feel like Town’s offensive rebound was the team’s first.

    Definitely a different feel there.

Ok the first good thing Bob Costas has done all series is call the Dodgers’ most recent championship “the 2020 situation.”

Bridges & OG having a Gatorade commercial “Anything you can do I can do better” competition on defense

Bridges says take your damn beer back, OG, watch me fuck Poole up.

When these two guys are on, it’s fantastic.

If we’re going to defend this way, there’s no need for rim protection, the other team won’t get there. 🤭

My wife is from Detroit and I shudder at the thought of what it’s gonna be like around here if it’s a Mets-Tigers World Series

If Diaz had walked one more batter, they’d have pulled him. Thankfully, he righted the ship. So much fun to watch this team continue its run.

I’d still give him all the money in the world but Soto is a butcher in the field.

and of course the Royals capitalize after the fail in the top of the inning

Nine steals in the first half, three offensive rebounds. Definitely a different look.

    Mitch, come back soon…

Brunson and Towns look good together. Towns just has to hit some outside shots. This could be a lot of fun.

ess-dog beat me to it. 😉

Bridges arms are ridiculously long. 😂😂😂😂

If Towns is just adequate on defense we are going to be VERY good.

Not paying too much attention as I am suffering through the Yankees game on the main screen, but Bridges is so fun on defense.

It puts a damper on things when Washington just looks like garbage all on their own.

If you can find a book out there that gives a Wizards win total above 0, bet the under.

I have to give MLB credit for something… it’s 9:20 and it’s the 7th inning. Never thought I’d see the day.

Sarr is big, long, athletic and nimble. I can see why a team would draft him and hope for the best.

Towns looks a lot better this half.

I can’t believe after 5 years of JK pounding the table about “chrome and leather” we finally have Chrome and Leather™️.

Thibs is salivating at the prospect of playing Mikal 48.5 minutes per game

My girlfriend just saw Towns running and she said “He’s not a little overweight. He’s fat”. 😂 She wants to put him on Ozempic.

I spent months saying the Yankees’ bullpen will be their undoing in October, so naturally it’s been dominant and everything else has gone to shit

I have a hot take on Aaron Judge: he’s going to be fine.

Yanks just have to make sure he doesn’t have a 4 game sample.

This is usually what happens in October, the offense is always what lets them down. Health and lack of SP depth too at times but that’s not an issue this year at least.

My girlfriend just saw Towns running and she said “He’s not a little overweight. He’s fat”. 😂 She wants to put him on Ozempic.

Now she says “When did the Knicks re-sign Eddy Curry?”

    The woman is cruel !

I take back any and all Giancarlo Stanton slander. I will be issuing an apology form. I will do better.

    Giancarlo “Postseason Aaron Judge” Stanton

Stanton is Mr October compared to the rest of his teammates! He’s actually had a great postseason career.

I love that Precious elicits the same reaction in me that Bad Julius did:

    Please — don’t — do — THAT!

I hope the Knicks don’t play Precious at the 4 in the season.

    Hukporti may be a keeper.

The Yankees have like 7 bench players and Boone lets Oswaldo hit against a leftie in the 8th inning. Kill me.

Edit: And of course, he walks.

I am hardcore second screening the Knicks, but TJ Warren looks like he’s in good shape. Good for him.

Kolek is playing with a bunch of non shooters and is tied for team lead in assists with only 13 minutes of play.

Weaver has been great but I’d still feel alot more comfortable if Mo was coming in right now.

maybe it’s the competition but Hukporti looks a lot better than he did in the summer league

Can the Knicks keep Warren? I thought they had to basically fill the last spots with rookie minimums?

Bob is Greek. Speak no ill of the Greeks.

Hubie mist be feeling really good about his broadcasting right now though

Ok, here is Razzball on the topic

“I’m sorry last inning I called a clear bloop a ‘line drive.’ I missed it because I am announcing the game from up George Brett’s ass.”

Can the Knicks keep Warren? I thought they had to basically fill the last spots with rookie minimums?

I think they would have to drop Shamet

“That’s a base hit up the middle”

    – Bob Costas, as the ball lands softly in Torres’ glove.

I think they would have to drop Shamet

Got it. Really wish KAT made like $5m less.

Hopefully Cole repeats his 2022 ALDS Game 4 performance tomorrow night and I get a much needed 3 days off from watching the Yankees lol

Get a good start from Cole tomorrow, and they are well set up. I want no business with Ragans at Yankees Stadium.

    @IanBegley
Pacome Dadiet was supposed to be in the rotation tonight because NYK wanted to get a look at him but he was unavailable due to a sprained finger, Tom Thibodeau says. Jericho Sims also suffered an ankle injury, which limited him to two minutes in win vs WAS.

And I want no business with Rodon in a game 5.

Schmidt was really good tonight. I like him.

I would think the Yankees go with Gil in a possible Game 5 , but Cole needs to get it done in Game 4 and the best duo in the regular season needs to carry the offense.

Everyone’s piling on Judge but go look at the old Yankees their bats used to go silent, too. The ‘98 Yanks got carried by pitching & their 8 & 9 hitters to get through the ALDS.

Keep playing games and Judge will have moments.

I have the feeling Gil is pitching the next game so that Cole pitches game 5 if necessary.

Thibs just wanted to play with his new toys longer, no reason for the Knicks to make up injuries

I’m thinking Shamet should start and play ~12 minutes a game while Jb and KAT are cooking. He spreads the floor and can drain a few wide open shots, – if they leave him wide open. This allows Josh Hart and Deuce to come off the bench & still play 30 minutes each.

Cam Payne is fools gold. High energy bottled with high inneficiency. TK looks like a 10yr veteran playing calm and collected while Cam looks like an adrenaline junkie out there. I think TK should play the 12 minutes that JB sits.

Think Mikal should play a bunch of minutes with 2nd unit. He has good off ball movement and synergy with Hart, Deuce and Kolek.

Hukporti is not ready and Jericho failed to develop. Precious is gonna have to fill the vacum until Mitch gets back.

    This bench is legit:
    Kolek
    Deuce
    Hart
    Bridges
    Mitch.

Well I didn’t get to watch this because my Amazon Fire Stick took a dump, but I’m glad to see that Kolek played well. A true backup PG would be a real nice thing to have, and you could definitely do a lot worse than Payne as your third string PG.

Looks like Cole will be pitching the next game. Don’t love it, on short rest, with Gil or Rodon in a potential deciding game 5. Oh well.

2 off days so far in the Yankee’s series…
