I don’t get it, is there even a feasible trade for Marcus Smart that wouldn’t put them over the second apron (they are currently hard capped at the second apron following the Towns trade)?

Not saying whether it would be a good or bad idea (it would be a bad idea), but could it even feasibly be done? I am sure Memphis would trade him right now for Deuce, whatever pick the Knicks can still trade, and filler, but is that even possible?

Yup, it sounds very strange if not “fakenewsian”.

The only trade I can fathom is one where they trade Mitch for someone whose contract would give us a little more breathing room under the second apron (like for instance Valanciunas who makes 4M and change less than Mitch but is signed for one more year).

Not that I would like that trade, but at least it would make sense.

Smart makes 20.2M this year and 21.6M the next, how can you accomodate him under the second apron?
Is there a world where they trade Hart and another small contract for him? But doesn’t it make us even smaller?

Brian, the filler in your trade would have to be Mitch (14.3M) and another player making 1M. It doesn’t make any sense. And money aside, i think Marcus Smart doesn’t make sense for us, is he better than Deuce?

Was there a trade Leon has made recently that the media knew in advance? I guess we can put that trade in the “not Smart” folder! 😀

The only way this makes any sense is that the Knicks are quite good at keeping who they are chasing a secret in part by allowing false rumours to go unchecked. I do not want to root for an annoying 30yr old ex-Celtic when I can root for the development of Deuce and Kolek instead.

Following on what Max said, an injured Mitch for a healthy Valanciunas kind of make sense, isn’t it?

On the other hand, everyone has known for four years that Leon wanted KAT. It just took forever to close the deal, and the timing of it surprised us all.

I would guess that they have had interest in Smart in the past. But as Brian notes, if it’s not a salary cap impossibility right now, it’s close enough that it wouldn’t seem worth Brock Aller trying to jump through hoops to make happen.

Playing with the trade machine, there’s workable trades. Whether anyone would agree to them, idk

They do not appear to be under the trade restrictions we are, so we can just send them more salary than we receive.

    For example:

Deuce & Hart for Smart & GG Jackson

    Mitch/Hart/Deuce for Smart/Aldama/Clarkson

No idea if anyone agrees to them, but they work.

Mitch + Precious gets you to Marcus Smart without much magic left for Aller.

It feels like we’re not into giving Mitch time to recover. Either that or we know it’s really bad and his recovery this year is unlikely. This reminds me of when he kept hearing Grimes rumors for two months straight before we eventually traded him. Our front office is good at keeping quiet but when you shop someone you inevitably run into a front office that has leaks.

If we’re talking to Memphis I’d like it to be about Brandon Clarke, who seems to have been Wally Pip’d while he was out. And is taller than 6’3”.

In terms of real trades, the only thing we know for sure is that they are open to trading Mitch – maybe even eager to do so. So my question would be, is there a trade with him that makes us better? I have a hard time thinking of one that might work. Begley reports that the Pelicans are serious about acquiring him (and like RJ to Toronto, it makes sense for non-basketball reasons too). Either Herb or Trey would be the only options – and as good as those would be for us, I’m still not sure we should do them. Centers seem to be scarce at the moment. I guess I would, but we’d be very, very vulnerable.

My understanding is that Precious can’t be traded for a while. If true, any trade seems like it would have to involve either Hart or Deuce. Trading either of those guys for Smart would be absolutely nuts.

I had a long conversation with a diehard Celts fan last weekend. He was not a fan of Smart and was thrilled to see him shipped out for a much better player. He said he had a propensity for doing really not smart (npi) things at critical moments, and that he was physically diminished, his defense was overrated, and he was always banged up.

    Really a bad idea.

Mitch + Precious gets you to Marcus Smart without much magic left for Aller.

I think we’re too close to the cap to make a 2-for-1 or 3-for-2 unless we’re clearing enough salary to sign an extra contract.

Hart and Deuce make money work, but I can’t even squint and make the basketball case for that. I’m assuming this is a game of telephone situation and prior interest, which was also previously reported, is just filtering out again now.

Anyone else going to the Yankee game tonight?

They have a couple of uber minimum contracts like Yuki Kawamura and Armando Bacot making $1.1M

    Payne would definitely be

If Mitch + Precious + Payne go out for Smart and those contracts we’ll take back about $1M less.

Point is… common sense is going to have to prevent this trade bc it can get done with minimal magic from Aller. This will be pretty easy for him, like Houdini escaping through an unlocked door.

It feels like we’re not into giving Mitch time to recover.

Where does this come from? Do you even know the precise nature of his injury?

For me, Hart should be untouchable in trades unless it’s a pipe dream, 0,01% scenario where it brings a substantially better player. The guy is always productive, Thibs favorite player, Brunson’s best friend, a fan favorite and at this moment in their careers at the very least just as good as Smart.

I’m hoping it’s just a pointless rumor because I don’t want Smart at all.

Valanciunis is kinda washed, it would be good if we had a center on the team who was good at defense

If the core of the trade was Hart for Smart I would be insanely against it. Unless we start Precious (which I am not in favor of at this point) or trade for a starting PF, rebounding is going to be be an issue. I love OG and think he’ll rebound a little better from the PF position if asked to, but he’s not going to replace Randle’s rebounding at PF. That’s not a strength of his. Some of it has to come from another position. That’s where Hart comes in as a starter. He’s a terrific rebounder for his position and showed in the playoffs he’s capable of filling that gap. Hart is very important to this team as a rebounder, playmaker and defender with more size than Smart.

According to Ian Begley, Precious Achiuwa can’t be traded until January 15, 2025. I don’t know why anyone would be discussing including him an a trade at this point when he can’t be traded until over three months from now. By then we will have had the preseason and 40 games to evaluate him as a part of this roster. It’s ridiculous to try to speculate out that far when so much can happen between now and then.

Any trade for Smart before then would have to include at least two of Mitch, Hart, Deuce, or Sims. I’d be utterly disgusted if it included either Hart or Deuce, and combining Mitch and Sims not only doesn’t get us there but would leave our C rotation thinner than Motel 6 toilet paper.

I would lose a ton of respect for Leon if he did something so dumb as this seems to be.

I don’t have anyone in mind, but if they are going to trade Mitch+ for anything, it should probably be a starting 3&D PF that’s a good rim protector. That would help protect Towns and the paint. They could just keep OG at SF and put Bridges at SG. Hart could go back to the bench where his energy is useful.

Please let’s stop speaking this unspeakable thing into possible existence. I really hope that Leon reads this and sees what a bad idea it would be.

We trust you *not* to do this one, Leon!!!

I can’t see Hart traded (not after JB’s discount, Mikal expected to do the same and DDV already shipped out) and I can’t see a trade for Mitch that doesn’t bring us a backup center, but that’s just me, our FO is obviously waaaay smarter.

If you are about to do a somewhat iffy trade for Mitch, you leak a Mitch out / Smart in swap, and everyone is happy with the iffy trade.

Relax, we’re not trading for Smart. Question is who we WILL trade Mitch for – since it seems clear we’re moving him.

Relax, we’re not trading for Smart. Question is who we WILL trade Mitch for – since it seems clear we’re moving him.

Why does it seem clear they are moving Mitch? Seriously? Has Leon ever seemed prone to a panicky move. Have we ever had any idea before he made a trade?

The only trade he has ‘supposedly’ been offered in was a trade for a big all star like KAT.

    Marcus Smart? C’mon!

A team with a surplus of bigs right now is Atlanta. They currently have Capela, Okongwu, Zeller, and Nance on their payroll. All but Capela work in the trade machine. In fact, Okongwu and Nance work straight up for Mitch, though we’d have to include a pick for the former and the latter is expiring. Not sure if either is worth it, but I’d kick the tires on all of them.

Brandon Clarke would work straight up too, and would help Memphis get bigger, which they’ve been hoping to do so JJr. can play his natural position (PF). That said, Clarke is demonstrably worse than Mitch and is coming off an Achilles injury, so idk how much he’d fit our needs, since we’re looking for a rim-protecting big who is more reliably available than Mitch.

KB-darling Tari Eason and Jock Landale work for Mitch straight up in the trade machine, which may work if Udoka is serious about trying, e.g., Sengun and Adams together at the 4/5. Also, if Jock is the third-stringer in Houston, I’d ask after him, Eason or no.

    One more option:

Pacers RFA-to-be Isaiah Jackson works for Dadiet, Sims, and a converted two-way guy. I don’t know if he’s a genuine rim protector, but he’s 6’10, his block numbers are nice, and he grades out well by DEPM.

All of this is to say: there are plenty of options and I’m sure Leon and co. are exploring all of them.

Has Leon ever seemed prone to a panicky move. Have we ever had any idea before he made a trade?

The answer to both these questions is yes. That’s why I said it reminds me of the Quentin Grimes situation last year.

Grimes had a bad month, quickly fell out of favor, and we heard rumors about him nonstop until he was ultimately sent out in a wildly shortsighted trade.

Where does this crazy idea that Leon moves in secret come from? Brunson, OG, Mitchell, Bridges, KAT… Leon chased these guys for years and everyone knew it.

Same with the guys he’s dumped. We all knew Quickley was being traded. We all knew Grimes was being traded. And now it seems like Mitch is next.

The Obi Toppin selection was another one the whole world knew about before it happened.

Everyone knew he was trying to trade up in the ’21 draft (and we knew his target was Chris Duarte). Everyone also knew his intention was to trade out of the ’22 draft for cap space.

Everyone knew he wanted to trade Randle and everyone knew he wanted KAT. The shocking thing was that Minnesota said yes.

The only move he ever made that was truly shocking was the Cam Reddish trade.

So if it seems like he wants to trade Mitch, he’s probably going to trade Mitch.

The only move he ever made that was truly shocking was the Cam Reddish trade.

Yeah, everybody saw the OG and Mikal trades coming.

The Obi Toppin selection was another one the whole world knew about before it happened.

    Citation please, including yours.

Bernie, everyone and his mother was reporting that Leon wanted Obi — that, in fact, he was contemplating trading up with the Cavs to get him.

Hubert is right that Leon’s interest in various players is often known long in advance. At the same time, when, or even if, he trades for some of the objects of his desire can be shocking. The OG, Mikal, and KAT trades all came out of the blue in terms of timing, and the Mikal trade in the fact that it happened at all.

Got it. Was thinking that the whole world knew he wouldn’t be available….

The answer to both these questions is yes. That’s why I said it reminds me of the Quentin Grimes situation last year.

    Hogwash.

Everybody covets top players. I’m sure he coveted Jokic and Giannis, too. I would wager he made inquiries about them , too

However… you didn’t have a scintilla of a sniff Bridges and KAT were coming when they did. The only one that played out in the press didn’t happen. Brunson was the obvious FA play. It was fairly certaint they needed to upgrade their PG position and Brunson was their guy.

The notion that they lost something of great value in Grimes is poppy cock. They made a trade near the deadline to get 2 offensive players for horrible player with an 18M contract and grimes, who was given every chance imaginable and played his way out of the rotation. Unfortunately the two offensive players both forgot how to shoot for two months and then Bogey went down with a fluke injury and the other rediscovered his stroke late in the playoffs.

I’d make that trade a thousand times out of a thousand. They were trying to go to the conference finals or better and had those two played up to the back of their baseball cards, they likely would have.

I don’t think they are going to be haunted by the great Grimes.

Trading Grimes and Frenchy wasn’t panicky, it was necessary, we needed people to play basketball. Frenchy was completely washed and Grimes was hurt and our roster was falling apart. It didn’t really work, but it made sense.

I think trading for Bridges was a pretty big overpay. Is that a result of panic? We certainly didn’t have to do it, but the FO clearly seems to feel a need to go for it in the next 2-3 years.

The Grimes trade wasn’t panicky, it was telegraphed. Perhaps we didn’t know Bojan was going to be the acquisition but we knew he was being shopped aggressively. (His panicky moves were the incineration and the two-year deal for Kemba Walker, but I didn’t want to rehash those.)

All these other moves… Obi, Brunson, OG, Bridges, KAT, Quickley, Grimes… these were not moves no one anticipated. The Brunson signing was so well known we got penalized for tampering!

There is nothing bad about telegraphing your moves. This isn’t criticizing Leon, it’s debunking a false narrative.

If we’re hearing tons of Mitch rumors, Mitch is probably being shopped aggressively.

not that it really matters but have they released the starting lineup for today, or do they not bother with that for preseason?

edit: i’m guessing they haven’t because the game is tomorrow

you didn’t have a scintilla of a sniff Bridges and KAT were coming when they did

We had two days of 200 comment threads about the Bridges rumor before it happened. The trade turned about to be very close to what was rumored.

    https://knickerblogger.net/2024/06/24/knicks-morning-news-2024-06-24/#comments:~:text=says%3A-,June%2024%2C%202024%20at%2009%3A26,-Meanwhile%2C%20Kevin%20Connor

Like Alan said, the timing is the surprise. The moves always line up to what we’ve heard.

I am telling myself that whatever happens in this series, the Mets have had a wonderful, unexpected season. We’re playing with house money.

    #LGM

No idea what you are arguing about Hubie, other than you always seem to be right. Gets a bit tiring.

I am telling myself that whatever happens in this series, the Mets have had a wonderful, unexpected season. We’re playing with house money.

Already had to invoke that mantra

Senga doesn’t look like he has a good release point. He’s all over the place, can’t locate the fastball. Gutsy move starting him but he’s not looking sharp.

Not a bad two innings for Senga, he settled down a bit after the first couple of batters. Now maybe they can get 3-4 innings out of Peterson and keep this close.

I see the logic in starting Senga. It’s a 5th starter vs. Ace situation due to the bye, and Senga, Peterson, and Megill can audition if a game 5 starter is needed.

Yeah it worked out starting Senga. Get 35 pitches from him today, and you can feel pretty good about using him again if there’s a game 5, maybe you get 60 or so out of him in that game.

Since that dreadful pitch to Schwarber to lead off the first, the Mets’ pitchers have done an outstanding job of shutting the Phillies down to keep us in this game until Zach Wheeler hit his pitch limit. This is a situation I would have signed up for at that time.

major contrubutions from a diverse group of folks, I really enjoy though the strong latin vibe from the mets…

it fits the city so well…los metropolitanos…

    as do the yanks 😊

although, if things don’t work out for them, I’ll be happy to ride along on that met bandwagon…

The Miracle Mets are doing it again, while the Yankees blew a great chance to score multiple runs in the first and now are flirting with disaster…
Disaster avoided, sending Sal Perez home from second on a single wasn’t a smart choice…

I can’t believe how fucking gritty this Mets team is. They are winning the right way…singles and sac flies. Just putting professional swings on the ball.

That was cool for Maton to come through after getting rocked on his last outing. I was worried about that choice from Mendoza but it worked out!

Even better than what the Mets are doing is having a friend who is a Phillies lunatic….

No chance we win the series though….

Wheeler had A+ stuff and completely shut the Mets down, but then the Mets light up the Phillies’ two best relievers, grinding out one at bat after another.

This was essentially a bullpen game for the Mets against one of the elite starting pitchers in the game and they stole it. Incredible.

Stanton is the A-Rod of this generation’s Yankees. Can’t begin to root for him.

This week, the Mets have dominated the vaunted bullpens of the Braves, Brewers, and Phillies. Now there might be some luck sprinkled in, but they are approaching situational at-bats with great mindsets and just executing all up and down the lineup. The vibes are unbelievable. The way they just pick each other up, time and time again, with everyone having their moment…just so much fun to root for!

You have to give Mendoza credit for not having a doghouse and keeping the struggling guys in the fold. Maybe Thibs could take a lesson from him.

I also really liked Mendoza pulling Vientos from the game for defense, moving Iglesias to 3B and putting Acuna in at 2B. The groundball Bohm hit to Iglesias wasn’t an easy play and Vientos might not have converted that.

Iglesias’ continued excellent play is just blowing my mind. Fouled off SEVEN two strike pitches and got a base hit to keep that 8th inning rally going, then makes that nice play at 3B in the bottom of the inning.

I just hope Thibs doesn’t take a lesson from Aaron Boone, because the Yankees’ inability to hit with RISP is maddening 🤬

Good bless the ultra boring RBI walks…

Meanwhile in a repeat of every postseason since 2009 the Yankees so far are 0 for 7 with RISP…

It’s funny you say that JK because I thought Vientos was playing pretty well at 3rd and was worried that Acuna might be overwhelmed by the moment and screw something up. But again, he’s pushing all the right buttons, so it’s all good!

As much as Mets fans love their current team I equally loathe this Yankees team lol

Ever since Boone became manager the Yankees have played the most uncrisp baseball for the past 7 years.

On the CBS sports prediction thread, this series was the only one in which one team [Yankees] got all the experts pick to the win the series

    Stefan Bondy
    @SbondyNBA

Shamet well on path to making final roster, as expected. Coach Tom Thibodeau again praised the veteran guard today and gave a clue into nine-man rotation. Story coming:

    In non baseball news

The way Bob Costas just said “and because it’s Stanton running, they get the out” was cold.

After 7 years of the same issues with a bunch of different players eventually the coaching staff has to be taken to task for the amount of mental gaffes.

Obviously Stanton’s baserunning is not on Boone though.

Boone will get fired if they take an L in this series, but letting him go will not cure all the Yankees issues and if Soto walks the team is cooked anyways.

I’ve been calling for Verdugo to be benched for over a month but good for him coming thru tonight!

Interesting trip around the bases for Jazz but he’s probably the only Yankee who would’ve scored from 2nd on that hit to LF.

Boone has mostly made the right calls tonight, Verdugo being the most obvious. Great fielding tonight, a few clutch hits. But also Cabrera at first, good choice.

    from that bondy article:

“He has really good chemistry with Cam [Payne], and then when you put Deuce [McBride] into that, they’re very fast. You can play with a lot of speed.”

Thibodeau added that Precious Achiuwa and Jericho Sims have also been running with the second unit. It’s a sign of Thibodeau’s nine-man rotation: Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby, Josh Hart, Karl-Anthony Towns, McBride, Achiuwa, Payne, Shamet and Sims.

“I think it’ll be a very strong unit for us,” Thibodeau said.

“It’s a sign of Thibodeau’s nine-man rotation: Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby, Josh Hart, Karl-Anthony Towns, McBride, Achiuwa, Payne, Shamet and Sims.”

    I count 10….

And a lineup with Deuce, Payne and Shamet in it might be fast, but they are tiny.

Who would’ve thought that the best Yankees closer since Mo retired would be Luke Weaver!

I’m very intrigued by McCullar Jr and hope he can get on the court soon.

What a slog but who cares?
It was the night of the unexpected heroes (Verdugo, Wells, Cabrera, Weaver, Holmes) and Chisolm’s speed is an underrated weapon.

BTW a nine-men rotation where you play ten guys, who said Thibs isn’t modern and innovative? 🤓

I’d be pretty surprised if both Shamet and Payne are in the rotation, except maybe early on when Thibs is trying to figure things out.

I also wonder if the lack of mention of Kolek means that Payne is ahead of him in the backup PG spot, or if Deuce is the backup and either Payne or Shamet is the backup 2…

We’ll probably have a bit more clarity after preseason game #1 tomorrow.

I think Duece will end up playing the 2 most of the time, he can’t really run an offense.

Payne and Kolek will battle for the backup PG spot

I’d actually be surprised if both Payne and Shamet aren’t in the rotation to start the season. These guys aren’t scrubs, they’re solid veterans who are used to getting fairly regular playing time off the bench and have also started a bunch of games during their careers.

There is nothing bad about telegraphing your moves. This isn’t criticizing Leon, it’s debunking a false narrative.

Yeah, it’s really weird how there is this invented narrative about us never knowing what Leon plans to do. I don’t get it. It doesn’t matter if we see his moves coming or not! Why is this something people want to make “a thing” so bad?

I’d actually be surprised if both Payne and Shamet aren’t in the rotation to start the season. These guys aren’t scrubs, they’re solid veterans who are used to getting fairly regular playing time off the bench and have also started a bunch of games during their careers.

As Z-Man notes, it probably turns on Kolek. If Kolek isn’t in the rotation, then yes, Payne will be. If Kolek is, I don’t see the room for Payne except for “break in case of emergency” situations.

Shamet will definitely be part of the rotation, though.

I think it’s less about “Leon never shows his cards” and more about “Leon keeps his mouth shut and ignores narratives (e.g. a trade could never happen with the Nets, or with Toronto while the lawsuit is going on) while negotiating behind the scenes, and when deals get done, they kind of happen suddenly. Everyone knew Leon & co. coveted OG, Mikal, and Towns, but no one was sure when and how the deals would get done…and when they did get done, they were announced sort of out of the blue.

The biggest exception to that was the Donovan Mitchell negotiation, when rumors were leaking daily. I wonder if Leon learned to keep things quieter after that…not in terms of interest, but more about the nature of offers and timing. Stuff always leaks because Leon can’t control rival sources…but it seems that his negotiating team is very careful not to leak particulars.

Landry Shamet seems like one of these guys who would play annoyingly well for Pat Riley on a minimum contract. So I’m fine with him being in the rotation.

Idk how there could be minutes for both Deuce and Shamet unless Deuce is primarily playing backup PG.

This is how I see the rotation to start the season:

    PG: Brunson, Deuce
    SG: Hart, Shamet
    SF: Mikal,
    PF: OG, Precious
    C: KAT,

Obviously that top 8 will get shuffled around in different positions. Then Payne, Kolek, Jericho, Warren, etc will fight to earn minutes.

One of the backup PGs will play and so will Shamet. The second unit will need playmaking and that is not really Deuce’s jam.

Boone has mostly made the right calls tonight, Verdugo being the most obvious. Great fielding tonight, a few clutch hits. But also Cabrera at first, good choice.

How could he start Dominguez after hitting a robust .179 in 56 at bats and worse than that making every fly ball an adventure?

Everyone knew Leon & co. coveted OG, Mikal, and Towns

I genuinely do not remember any reports about either OG or Bridges.

I don’t remember any such reports either. Both players were discussed here as good fits, but with the assumption we would never be able to trade for them
