I’m not so sure the Mets will go all in on Soto. After paying Scherzer and Verlander each $43m per year and watching that fail hard, hopefully Cohen has learned his lesson about trying to buy a WS appearance. Sure, they’ll be interested, but Stearns may be more interested in value signings.
This season was driven by Stearns’s smart offseason signings. The Severino and Manaea signings were monstrously successful at bargain prices, but both are either going to be gone or want big $ to return.
The Mets are going to have to rebuild the rotation around Senga, one of Peterson/Megill (no way both have turned the corner…) and then what? Scott’s gone. I guess Sproat is a good candidate, but he’s young and who knows if he makes the leap well. Maybe Stearns invests a lot of “Soto money” on pitching, instead?
Soto isn’t leaving the Yankees.
There’s a huge difference between signing 37/40 year old players to large contracts and signing a 26 year old to a large contract.
There’s of course no such thing as a “safe” 10+ year contract, but I can’t fathom a Soto contract I wouldn’t be delighted about as a Yankee fan if we re-sign him.
Would 15 years/$600 million do it? š

The Mets are getting like $60M worth of value from Francisco Lindor this year on a $34M contract. Signing blue chip position players in their primes is one of the better ways you can spend your free agent dollars.
I think Soto will ultimately end up with the Yankees, but I also believe Cohen will be the highest bidder. He’s not going to get outbid on Soto.
On the opening day of free agency, the Mets will have about $130M coming off the books. They’ll need at least two starting pitchers, a replacement for Alonso, and two outfielders. They can probably capably fill every other position internally, with plenty of depth in the form of young position players who are close to MLB-ready and veterans like McNeil and Marte who will be in the final years of their contracts.
Adding Soto moves them from the marginal wild card-ish contender they are now to an almost sure playoff bet for the forseeable future. It’s the right place on the win curve to sign a player like Soto. The Mets are in the position to be able to add a $60M AAV contract and still have money left over to fill other needs. They’d still have $70M to get the two starting pitchers (one top of rotation guy plus one innings eater, say) and the first baseman. Or they could move Vientos to first (he hits enough) and find a better defensive 3B instead.
They’re in a shockingly good position. Stearns knows what he’s doing and the Mets should be formidable going forward.
I honestly donāt know if Iām crazy or if Iām seeing things perfectly clearly, but when I look at the history Scott Boras and contract growth I see this headed to a $1 billion contract. 15 years, $1 BN, thatās my guess.
I also think Hal is looking for an excuse to get out of paying this guy, and that number will give it to him.
sign this man!
Josh Hart is hilarious! š
Easy there big fella… Lindor is a terrific player (8th in the league in WAR) but that doesn’t equal 60M in value.
Soto isn’t getting 67M/year for 15, either. He’s a wonderful player but Cohen didn’t get rich by throwing crazy money at people. The Mets will need starting pitching and a bunch of it.
Soto may have other priorities, but he can never find a better baseball situation where he has Judge as line-up protection and he doesn’t have to be “the man”.
1 WAR is worth about $8M on the FA market. Lindor has racked up 7.4 WAR this year. Not all that hard to extrapolate the math from there.
If Soto stays in the Bronx it will be because he prefers playing for the Yankees, which I think is what will happen. But the Mets will throw a ton of money at him, and even if they sign him theyāll still have money left over to fill other holes.
I fucking love Monica McNutt.
āProtect the asset,ā he [SA Smith] had said repeatedly, arguing that the WNBA risked tremendous damage to the league if Clark was harmed by another player.
āPlease tell me what it means to protect the asset and compete at a high level,ā McNutt said. āItās like suddenly yāall donāt know how to talk about competition because thereās vaginas involved.ā

It means to treat to Clark the same way the league treated MJ from 1991-1999 and has treated every other star since then.
Heās a real d-bag, but Aaron Rodgers is a great QB.
Lindor’s WAR this year is 6.6, not 7.4… you need a pretty strong fudge factor to get there. Imagine how good Hank feels for getting Judge at half price with his 10.5 and 9.8 his last 2 healthy seasons…
Even Ohtani, a guy with Babe Ruth offensive figures AND at frontline starting pitcher couldn’t get 8 x WAR last season and to get 70M he had to defer 70% of his salary. Present value of money, yada yada.
I love me some Lindor, but he would never command near 60M if he was FA this winter, IMO š
Shohei Shohei Shohei…ca-razy…
I donāt know what a WAR is, and I donāt know much else about anything that was posted in this thread, but I do know a good baseball performance when I hear of one. 6-6 with 3 home runs and 10 RBI while creating a 50-50 club is probably worth $8 million just for the days work.
Lindor is at 7.4 WAR on Fangraphs, highest in the National League before Ohtani’s game tonight, which means he’s now second in the league. I don’t know what site you’re using to determine WAR, but you should probably stick with FanGraphs.
How much do you think a Gold Glove shortstop with a 136 wRC+ is worth? It’s… a lot. Here’s a handy chart that might help you. He has given the Mets $59.3M worth of production.

at this point in the season it feels like Clay Holmes should be sporting a negative 50 WAR right now…
yeah, the Clay Holmes thing did not work out so well this season…
Hubert is right. Clark is the meal ticket for every single woman in that league. These women are making 80k a year. She’s going to get them to million dollar contracts in 5 years. If they play their cards right. Caitlin has some definite issues controlling herself and it would be good if she had some strong people to put her in check. I was pretty young during the MJ Knicks years, around 10, but I don’t remember MJ ever visibly getting so frustrated as she does. He went into killer instinct and made the other team pay when he felt he was wronged. If she can get there, she’ll be beyond legendary for the women’s game.
