Revisiting Mavericks Trade For Knicks’ Kristaps Porzingis

It’s fucking unbelievable that just four years ago we were “wtf Leon?”and now we’re quibbling over whether this 5-year window monster is going to win at least one championship or perennially fizzle out in round 2 or 3. We have a team of talented tough-minded badasses who will do us proud every fucking night, win or lose. That’s all I could have asked for.

    This ^^^^^^^^^^

Free agent G Landry Shamet has agreed on a one-year deal with the New York Knicks, his agent George S. Langberg of GSL Sports Group tells ESPN. Shamet has career averages of 8.7 points and 38 percent on three-pointers. pic.twitter.com/uS6cxqg68X— Adrian Wojnarowski (@wojespn) September 14, 2024

…did he have a recent growth spurt?

I guess they’re all in on precious, sims, an/or smallball lineups whenever Mitch isn’t ready.

But also, Shamet gives us a bit more cover if we wind up having to trade one of our bench wings for a big man.

I wonder if they gave him the taxpayer mid level.

it’s late now, but, maybe a better question for another time – how important is seeding to us?

maybe a mute question, the team will go out to win each night…the end of our roster is improving…

Yeah, we’re going to compete every single game, so we won’t be trying to find the best match. I think the main goal is to be top4 to have homecourt advantage in the 1st round. If we can be top2, great, but if we’re not, i don’t think that’s a big deal. It’s more important to be healthy, as we already know from last season.
Top4 candidates: Celtics, Knicks, Cavs, Sixers, Bucks, Magic?, Pacers?

One thing about the C position I want to throw out there. Leon has shown a lot of patience when trading for or signing key players. He tends to target specific players for specific positions/roles and then waits until he can land one of the primary targets. I think some of the names being thrown around for C are not primary targets and won’t be the player we ultimately bring in.

I’m not a big Shamet fan, but he can knock down corner 3s and will add some depth to the bench.

I’m a bit confused about how good we are going to be this year. Adding Bridges is a clear plus for the bench because DDV will improve the bench unit a lot. But how much better the starters will be with Mikal instead of DDV is a little tougher to calculate. The question is whether adding Mikal is greater than losing I-Hart. That’s tough to answer because we don’t know what Mitch is going to give us and a good case can be made that I-Hart was pretty critical to our success last year.

I like iHart a lot, and i always like to keep the guys we have, if they’re good, but iHart wasn’t pretty critical to our success. We had long stretches with Precious and the team was almost as effective as with iHart. He’s a very good player, just like DDV is too. But Mikal is a great player, and Leon is slowly changing our very good players to great players (Quick* to Brunson, DDV to Mikal, Hart to OG). Randle was already great, and even more if the game doesn’t have to go through him every single possession. And then there’s the C position, Mitch is ok to good, iHart was very good. Of course is bad to lose a very good player, but it’s more important to elevate another position to great.
Let’s see what we can do this season, but i think iHart is now overvalued around here. He’s very good, but if we get a good C that doesn’t have health problems like Mitch or if Mitch stays healthy, we’ll be better than last season.

*i’m assuming Quick would be our PG if we didn’t sign Brunson at that time.

Maybe “critical” was too strong a word, but no way were we as good with Precious as with I-Hart other than maybe a miscellaneous game here or there. I-Hart was very good.

The question is: should we rue losing iHart because some team decided to pay him close to $30M AAV? At $18M for 4 years he would have been a great asset. But even if we could have matched OKC’s offer or come close enough to entice iHar to forego the difference and stay, I’m not sure it would have been such a great idea.

In contrast, Mikal on his current deal is more than worth it, salary cap-wise. Whether he was worth all those picks is an open question, but he is a MUCH better fit than iHart. Swapping those two out improves the team, no question about it in my mind.

Honestly, I’d rather have IHart than Bridges for the Knicks right now. Provided he stays healthy.

Bridges is an Iionman though. Surprisingly impactful trait.

    It’s a close call I think.

You answer your own question, Geo, when you go on to say that the only thing that matters is health in the playoffs. Home court would be nice, but health is 1000% more important.

One grammar thing, though (lord save us): the word is “moot,” not “mute.” Its actual meaning is “debatable,” as in a “moot court,” but over the years common usage has come to mean the opposite, more or less – a point that isn’t worth debating. (The same thing happened with “nonplussed,” which most people now use opposite of its true meaning.) Sorry for the pedantry, but I thought you’d like to know.

it must be really late – cuz now the thing i’m wondering most going in to the season:

what hue of brown will thibs remaining follicles be this year?

should he simply get a hair piece? why not?

He’s got the money to do the Hollywood hair transplant thing – feel like he should give that a shot. But if he’s Cajun maybe he likes the idea of a dead squirrel on his head….

I love iHart and wish we could’ve kept him, but I am much, much more confident we can Moneyball our way to someone almost as good as iHart than I am that we could’ve done the same with Bridges.

The way I view it is the roster is less complete, but still closer to championship-level than it would’ve been with iHart and no Bridges.

The Shamet thing is weird though, despite him being a well-above average deep bench guy, because I’ve been operating under the assumption they know they need another center. Some possibilities, some of which aren’t mutually exclusive:

    1) they have more confidence in Precious/Huk/Sims than we think
    2) they have more confidence in Randle at the 5 than we think/they’ve let on in the past
    3) they have no problem cutting someone in their top-15 if/when they get a center to their liking

I will say, after pounding the internet table about how I wished we had competent end-of-bench guys for much of last season, it’s kinda nice those spots now belong to guys like KBD, Shamet, and Payne.

iHart was really important to last year’s team, especially after Randle got hurt. His passing on the pnr and his little floaters really helped with the Brunson centric offense we had to go to. We’re going to have a very different team at the start of next year than the team we took into the playoffs last year, so hopefully we’ll be able to make up for his absence in other ways.

The way I view it is the roster is less complete, but still closer to championship-level than it would’ve been with iHart and no Bridges.

In a way, this makes little sense, but I think it’s entirely accurate.

If I had to guess about the Shamet signing, it’s an NBA player on a good salary who can be part of a trade when the time comes. It also means there’s no good center option available at the moment, trade or otherwise.

Shamet as another Human Trade Exception — assuming he’s getting the taxpayer mid level — makes the most sense the more I think about it. Combine him and Precious and KBD, and you can get someone pretty good who makes in the low teens.

Guess we gave up on finding a viable C on the FA market.

Shamet is an NBA player. I don’t think he’s a particularly good one, but he’s probably better than the average deep bench guy.

Shamet had a weird down year last year, went from 38% from three in his career to 33%, and his BPM cratered. Maybe an injury? He’s only 27, which I find amazing as it feels like he’s been hanging around forever.

But you can never have enough undersized wings.

Woj: “Restricted free agent F Isaac Okoro has agreed on a three-year, $38 million deal to stay with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Michael Tellem, Jeff Schwartz and Marcus Monk of @excelbasketball tell ESPN. Okoro — the fifth overall pick in 2020 — averaged 9.4 points a season ago.”

Shamet? Is he a good player? Whenever i saw him he was pretty bad.

You and I must watch the same games. According to his stat sheet, he does make baskets. But, like a tree falling in the woods, no one hears them.

Begley: “Landry Shamet’s Exhibit 9 deal gives him full veteran’s minimum if/when deal becomes fully guaranteed. It’s currently non guaranteed. Knicks have 14 players on traditional NBA deals right now. They can have as many as 21 players on roster in camp. Need to get to 15 traditional deals by opening night.”
