Concussion ball is back in session. Means it’s only a few more weeks till the start of the NBA’s “Best Shape of My Life” season.

I’ve resolved to stop paying attention to the Giants, and the NFL in general, as much as possible. Obviously, it’s easier to do this when the team I write for is likely to stink again. But time is limited, and it becomes harder with each passing year to watch this particular sport and all of its ethical questions.

Las Vegas Raider fandom will sap you of your NFL excitement in a very reliable fashion. The Mets and Knicks are both fun. Wishcasting on Gardner Minshew, not so much.

Believe me I understand the ethical issues involved in football. But if I used ethics as a barometer to what sports or teams I enjoy or root for, football and the Giants would not top the list, not even top 5 in the former and not top 100 in the latter. So I just enjoy it and welcome any “progress” on medical, social, fairness or just common sense grounds even if each step seems 15 years too late.

The ethical questions for football were answered awhile ago then answered again. The new branding coalition is beyond ethical question and downright dystopian.

I am so with you, Alan.

The problem as I see it is that football is, with basketball, arguably the most exciting sport to watch (and if I were totally objective I might rank it above basketball, but I can’t).

It does really help that none of the teams I’ve rooted for are any good these days.

It’s kind of crazy how good a hitter Mark Vientos has been. He has a 150 wRC+, which would rank 10th in MLB if he had enough at bats to qualify.

Pro-rated over a full season he’d be a 5 WAR player. Definitely did not see that coming.

Thank goodness for the Mets and US Open, Giants are going to have a paper bag over the head season. Wise to avoid the aggravation.

I’ve resolved to stop paying attention to the Giants, and the NFL in general, as much as possible.

The last Giants game I watched was a three TD loss to the Baltimore Ravens in December of 2012. Haven’t felt like I’m missing out.

Come to think of it… the last Yankees game I watched was game 6 of the 2019 ALCS (Altuve’s cheating walk off). Pretty sure I haven’t missed out on anything there, either.

I also don’t watch football which is why I am watching the Giants right now with my kids.

My favorite sports anomaly outside of basketball is quarterback performance. I am loving the way that Sam Darnold looks like Tom Brady in Minnesota with a good line and Justin Jefferson.

    hi, my name is geo…

I enjoy drugs, alcohol, sex, junk food and watching football…

I was so happy when the college football and nfl seasons began…

I am by no means an apex consumer here in america, i try hard though…

The crazy thing about football is there is only an average of 18 minutes of action in a typical game. The rest of the 3 hours is replays and commentary (and ads and halftime of course)

But it still dominates the sports landscape and it’s not even close.

One set into the US Open final and they’ve cut to Taylor Swift and her buffoon in the bucket hat 7 times already.

I think what keeps football so popular is it’s pizza-like nature: even the mediocre-to-bad games are fairly entertaining. You couldn’t pay me to watch a game between two under .500 baseball teams, but pretty much every football game has its moments.

We’ll probably never be able to phase it out based on its obvious ethical qualms, so I can only hope we can one day get past those technologically. Kind of like how A/C isn’t going anywhere, so for the planet’s sake we’ll need to figure out a way to power it cleanly.

On one hand, it was a bad look for Nestor to complain about piggybacking Schmidt’s start. On the other, he’s kind of right on the merits–he’s probably been our most valuable pitcher this year all things considered.

Nestor and Stroman have by far the worst stuff in the rotation and should be the 2 SPs pulled from the playoff rotation. Difference is Nestor can be very useful in the bullpen while at this point Stroman shouldn’t even be on the postseason roster.

However I have a feeling he’ll be the 4th SP with Nestor and either Gil or Schmidt in the bullpen come playoff time. Good thing is in the ALDS due to the off days you only need 3 SP.

Couldn’t disagree more. The on-field product is pretty poor, IMO. Hence the sport is widely disregarded and largely unpopular in the greater world.

I think what keeps it popular in the United States is a potent mixture of indoctrination, mass hypnosis, and addiction.

even the mediocre-to-bad games are fairly entertaining.

point in case, i got the falcons and steelers on as ambiance..and i am eating pizza and drinking an orange soda…

The crazy thing about football is there is only an average of 18 minutes of action in a typical game.

that’s perfect, i don’t really wanna watch that much tv anyways…

By American sports fan standards I’m not even much of a football fan and have even thought at certain points I could swear off it ethically. Then Miami (my alma mater) *knocks on wood* got good again and I quickly got roped back in to the college game.

I’ll say this: this year’s Giants may be the ultimate stress test of my football as pizza theory.

I’ve always wondered how popular the NFL would be if you took away gambling and fantasy leagues.

My guess is that viewership would drop pretty precipitously

i got the youtube sunday ticket with multi view…i have the four squares of games and it seems like i miss the best plays in each one because I am not sure which box to focus on…but as the day wore on…i got better at it..

My parents were both sportswriters. They’ve had football on TV every sunday that I’ve ever known them. To this day I still don’t know the rules, or can name but 10 players that have ever played the game. It has always gone in one eye and out the other, like algebra, most of E’s posts, and the 2024 presidential election.

We’ll probably never be able to phase it out based on its obvious ethical qualms

As someone who played a lot of football and thoroughly enjoyed playing, i missed the memo on its “obvious ethical qualms”. What would they be?

I was thinking on this some today Bob, you know – what if the boys wanted to play organized football, instead of basketball…

decided I would just be happy that they weren’t in to skateboarding – that stuff terrifies me…watching kids zoom around in those crazy concrete bowls…ouch…

or, having the kids be in to BMX or something else “extreme”…

maybe it’s just that CTE is such a horrific illness…

The NFL and by proxy College have made football more than a sport. It’s an excuse for people to get together on a Sunday to hang out. I got invited to a party today to watch the Titan’s game in Nashville. It’s especially a community event in the South. Something I’ve noticed since moving to Nashville. I don’t really care about football other than throwing a few dollars on it, but I spend a lot of time with my friends down here watching it every year.

The Giants looked really, really bad. Somehow making the playoffs 2 years ago is probably going to get everyone fired.

I was thinking on this some today Bob, you know – what if the boys wanted to play organized football, instead of basketball…

I don’t get the whole idea of Pop Warner football. Kids that young don’t need that sort of contact and size differences.

My son playred all the sports , but loved ice hockey and played high school hockey for the biggest program in Minnesota and was a line mate of Blake Wheeler who had a big career in the NHL. He got smacked around a bit but never seriously injured (torn labrum) til he played college rugby at Middlebury College in VT.

Hockey isn’t quite football, but it is pretty violent. He would tell you, and I agree, the discipline and priority of working to excel within a group where everyone is accountable, taught him far more valuable life lessons that were commensurate with the risk.

The Giants should have never talked themselves into thinking Daniel Jones was going to be like Eli Manning. That’s what has sunk them.

I don’t think football is going away. Some people love to play it and I don’t think it’s just the running around. They like the physicality if it.

Eli Manning becomes more legendary as the years go by. Many people think he wasn’t that good and only had a couple of lucky playoff runs but he had very good regular season numbers. Aside from too many INTs early in his career he consistently finished Top 10 in passing yards and TDs.

Nabers would have a field day if Eli was his QB just like his fellow LSU alumn ODB had playing with Eli, unfortunately Daniel Jones is more Dave Brown than Eli Manning.

Daniel Jones had a handful of good games early in his career and some Giants fans have been wishcasting on him ever since. He hasn’t been surrounded by great talent, but he’s also just not a very good football player.

Nabers would have a field day if Eli was his QB just like his fellow LSU alumn ODB had playing with Eli, unfortunately Daniel Jones is more Dave Brown than Eli Manning.

No one holds Eli higher than me due to his enormous ability to play with complete equanimity in the clutch, but even he had losing records in 5 of his last 6 seasons after Snee, Seuibert and Deihl retired due to injury and the OL was never adequately addressed for the last decade.

Jones has PTSD after being beaten to a pulp in the past 5 seasons. His career has been ruined by mismanagement of the OL which sucked today. Minn rushed 4 or 5 most of the day and Jones as sacked 5 times and under the gun on 70% of his drop backs. The one thing he could always do well was deliver the ball and today he was throwing behind everyone with poor footwork in the pocket.

I don’t think football is going away. Some people love to play it and I don’t think it’s just the running around. They like the physicality if it.

This. Football is legalized mayhem with a huge team component. It is one of the most fun things to do. If one guy out of the 11 misses his assignment by a half second, the play is blown up. The physicality is a feature, not a glitch.

Go look at Eli’s numbers in the 5 seasons he played with ODB. Yeah they only made the playoffs once but Eli threw for over 4,000 yards 4 out of the 5 seasons and over 30 TDs twice while completing over 60% of his passes every season.

The running game was almost non-existent in Eli’s final years thanks to the weaker o-line and the defense except for 2016 was garbage but Eli arguably had his best seasons during that stretch.
