Knicks 2024-25 Season Player Preview: Cameron Payne

Nice piece on new Knick and suspected elf Cameron Payne. I actually thought this was a great pick-up even though it got little attention here, but I am still struck by the logjam at backup point with Payne, Deuce, and Kolek and 13-14 minutes to share among them (I know, Deuce is really a short wing, but the logjam at wing is arguably even worse). Decent situation if (I can barely type it) Brunson goes down for any period of time, but otherwise a bit of an embarrassment of riches. Should be a definite side story for the season.
Better than having four power forwards, I suppose…
Like last year with Q and DDV, we’re set up for a trade. This time DDV and Deuce are our most appealing assets. And a few final draft picks. I have to guess they’ll use them this year for a big.
Per last thread, the Roommates podcast/YouTube video is very good. Cuban is a knowledgeable guest, and he and JB get into it a little bit.
The team seems high on Kolek and I think Katz said they view him as the backup, but he’s a rookie PG and there is going to be a real chance he’s not good enough to keep that job. I’d figure Payne is the next man up, I don’t really see where Deuce is going to get minutes when the team is full strength
5 wings (Bridges, OG, Donte, Hart, Deuce) for 2 spots seems like a logjam. But with the lack of viable centers behind Mitch, we’ll probably use more 3 wing lineups than ever. And I’m very optimistic about the potential of those lineups. Between that and the likelihood of OG missing time, I don’t think there will be a real logjam at the wing. I’d bet the over on Deuce’s minutes.
Regarding the 3 wing lineups that people currently think Thibs will be reluctant to use, I think we sometimes conflate Thibs’ tactical rigidity with strategic rigidity. On strategy I think he’s more open minded than people give him credit for. He made the shift to increase 3PAs on Day 1, for instance. And when things were bleak last year, he started Brunson-Deuce-Donte-Hart together to salvage the season.
That last move kind of sums him up. He probably went to his best lineup 2-3 weeks later than he should have. That kind of delay demonstrates his tactical rigidity. But when he did need to make a change, he went with 4 guards under 6’5″. That demonstrates strategic flexibility.
So my bet is he will be open minded on the smaller lineups. And when they perform as well as I expect them to, they’ll become mainstays.
I think we’ll get about 20-24 mpg of traditional Thibs ball with Mitch, and the rest of the game will be Jalen Brunson running a spread offense like Pat Mahomes. For that reason, I’m pretty optimistic on the upcoming season. I’m thinking 56 wins is a reasonable high end outcome.
Whether or not we can translate that to postseason success is a different story, one that will depend on the questionable defensive ability of those small lineups.
Hey JK (or any other musicians out there) – do you know of any apps that will provide the actual notes for a song that’s playing? I’m in a Steely Dan tribute band, and I’m trying to decipher some of the more complex keyboard solos and finding it really hard to play along (which is really a tribute to the genius of Fagen et al)
I’ve been in a lot of cover bands over the years, but there’s no greater challenge than learning a Steely Dan tune. A little bit harder than covering Tom Petty or Lynyrd Skynyrd lol.
I’m not sure how it is for keyboards, but for guitar you are generally stuck with the tabs from other guitar players and any youtube lessons out there. The quality of that info is a mixed bag.
I would guess you can find similar sources for keyboards.
What I’ve found is that between the multiple sources out there and my own ear I can usually figure out what I want or get really close.
So many crunchy chords in those Steely Dan songs. Very difficult to figure those out by ear.
I would try MuseScore. You can download PDFs of sheet music a la carte and they seem to be accurate. I took at look at the charts for “Josie” and “Deacon Blues” and they seem to have the correct voicings. You can find charts for their songs for free online, but the free ones are spotty in their accuracy. Some of the more popular songs might have YouTube tutorials as well.
Thanks Strat and JK. I have checked out some You Tube videos and have also downloaded a few songs from Muse Score which is pretty reliable. I’ve generally got the chords down (although I still have to have the sheet music in front of me in most cases because of those “crunchy” chords that are so hard to memorize!)
Our guitar player (who’s really good) does most of the heavy lifting since most Dan songs have guitar solos vs keyboard solos, but in the few cases where there are keyboard solos I’m trying to work them out. (Not necessarily trying to duplicate them just want them to sound good)
Amusing gaffe of the day. So far. It’s still early here…
Sent the lad some of the Steely Dan info you guys wrote up, via email — his email address is his three initials at gmail.com.
Got back a response from a very famous now retired gentleman in my profession whose initials are one away from the lad’s and whose email is also gmail.com, saying he doesn’t know this Dan fellow and doesn’t care but thanks for writing.
On his podcast, JB said that he took that paycut, in part, because he wanst to keep this team together for as long as possible, meaning his Nova crew. This is why I don’t see Leon moving away from DDV til at least next summer.
I maintained this since we signed him to that bloated contract which was opposite to Leon’s historical record, that OG +/- Deuce +/- whatever picks go out on a big trade of young top 10 center, if one becomes available at the trade deadline or next summer. Good example is: Sengun, JJJ, or even veterans like AD or Bam.
lol
