I do think there is a fair amount of downside if we get hit with another Mitch injury. It’s hard to have a good NBA team with no one over 6’8.

Not to worry, Sims is listed at 6’10” with shoes on

JK, that’s great about your kid and David Bowie / Queen. It’s a joy to watch our kids grow, don’t forget to have the most time that you can to enjoy it. 😉

You can’t teach height, i agree, but in the NBA you still have to be a hell of a player to justify your minutes. Let’s hope Sims and Hukporti can do that, if something happens to Mitch. (knock on wood! knock on wood!)

Mitch doesn’t have one chronic issue that we know is going to give out like Kawhi’s knee. I think chances are good that he stays healthy this year. If not, it won’t be impossible to find a cromulent replacement.

Hasn’t Mitch now had two surgeries on the same ankle?

We may be lucky to see him in good form before 2025 let alone opening night.

Hasn’t Mitch now had two surgeries on the same ankle?

Yes…. the left ankle both times this season. They haven’t been very forthcoming about the specifics (whether it was a different region of the same ankle or not).

Any speculation about the injury, is pure speculation, other than the obvious that two surgeries are generally worse than one.

Now to speculate 🙂 It sounds like his original injury was severe enough for them to try and get an exemption to sign another player. When tat failed with the league office, they saw it was healing well and pushed him to try to get back for the playoffs. It held up for 14 games and then gave out. Risk/Reward….

The notion that with 2 low first round picks that they didn’t chase a center in the draft or through a trade knowing there was a very good chance Hart would be gone makes me think they figure the second surgery will do the trick. This front office is pretty calculating, and I don’t think they would have left themselves wide open at center with a NOW team, if they didn’t believe this problem was solved.

… that they didn’t chase a center in the draft or through a trade knowing there was a very good chance (i)Hart would be gone makes me think they figure the second surgery will do the trick.

Maybe. I think they overestimated the chance that iHart would stay for less.

I love Mitch and I am an optimist by nature, but I’m also conservative about injuries and re-hab.

As I understand it, Mitch has a chronic stress fracture in an ankle that is now likely held together by enough metal to alert TSA. Getting him up to speed is gonna take some time.

Precious is gonna play a lot this fall (I think). He better be working out with those lions.

I consider this one ankle injury, that he may have come back too early from. If it was the same ankle every year, then I would be much more concerned. We’re not there yet. Also, I think he should stay out until he is 100% healthy. If that means January 2025 or so, so be it. This team will be fine against most opponents without him. We really need him to be ready for the playoffs. It’s very similar to the KP situation in Boston. I would also like to see him lose 15 or 20 lbs to try and regain some of his athleticism. I miss the “freakish athlete”.

Totally agree. That’s also why I think it’s gonna take a while. And his “coming back too early” if true suggests even more patience this time around.

    +1

How insanely amazing would it be if the whole franchise was working lockstep to get the players at their peaks physically for the playoffs? That may be a big shift for Thibs but I can dream …

Although Precious is not tall, he has basically the same standing reach as Wendell Carter (9’1”) and is a plus athlete for the position. Sims is a bit taller but with a shorter standing reach (8’10”) — but he has that ridiculous vertical for a center (or anyone really).

I’m less worried about their measurements than simply how good they are on both sides of the ball. I think the ideal would be for Sims to have improved to the point where he could become the starter if Mitch goes down and Precious would remain the backup. I think it says something that the team seems to have more faith in Sims than a guy like Nick Richards or a grizzled vet they could’ve gotten for cheap.

“I think it says something that the team seems to have more faith in Sims than a guy like…”

Always thought Sims had potential to develop a good amount into a decent C as it exists today. For example, he can’t set a proper screen to save his life but that has got to be fixable with coaching. Same thing with getting backed down too easily.

My kingdom for a center who can set a good screen. This is another area where Precious has struggled. It’s the main reason I’m intrigued in Hukporti— he is willing to set a good hard screen and that was a big part of his game in Australia.

I mean, it can’t be that hard to teach, right?

It shouldn’t be yet no one has taught Mitch how to set a good one yet…

I-Hart is one of the best screeners in the league. The Knicks (and especially Brunson) are really gonna miss that this season.

Mitch only averaged .5 fewer screen assists per game than iHart, which surprised me. He looks worse setting them. maybe being bigger helps.

I also find that stat surprising.

It’s very difficult to set good screens in my experience. I played a ton of ball and never felt good at it, especially in less structured moments of games when we were out of the set offense.

Maybe a lot of guys come up as ball dominant stars and don’t have much experience with it? Did Eddy Curry set a lot of screens in high school?

We are going to miss IHart in a lot of ways but there was no keeping him

all these discussions about losing isaiah is making me wonder if him leaving is more significant to the team than adding mikal…

I’ve wanted mikal on the team for years…

the center position sure seems like a point of weakness heading in to the season – is that though just because we are so strong now at the other four positions?

considering I’ve watched this team go a decade without a starting point guard, I’m kind of confident at some point this season we’ll solidify the situation…

my vote is to try to add jonas valanciunas during the season…

I’m small but a pretty good screener. What I find is setting screens is an art that requires making audibles in the course of an offense if they’re not being explicitly called for. Setting a good screen involves assessing how to maximize your surface area without committing a foul, and that requires a lot of quick reading of the floor. Also, it involves decision making—since you need to decide whether to hold the screen, pop, or dive. It seems to me to be less about physical ability—though being wide helps—and more about positioning yourself in just the right way or reading when your screen is going to result in a real opportunity. In that sense, it’s at least as much about feel as it is about size or athleticism.

I’d need to see a video breakdown on these purported differences in screen quality between iHart, Mitch, and other Cs before concluding that there is any difference in the quality of the actual screens. My guess is that any important difference is in what iHart does subsequent to setting a screen, but I’m certainly persuadable.
