    My SL impressions so far:

    – I’m sold on Kolek, he’s slow and he’ll suffer on defense but he showed me he can stay on the floor.
I really like the way he plays especially when he finds the balance between passing and shooting (IMO he leaned on passing too much in the first two games).

    – Dadier is enticing, his shooting form looks good but he has a LOT of work to do (handle, readings, up and down focus on defense). Yesterday was his worst game but he won’t be 19 until next week, he has time.

    – Both Huk and Skap are better offensive players than Sims, but Jericho is a better defender (and he’s not even that good for NBA standards). Right now I can see Thibs having a stroke on the sidelines while one of the two tries to “rim protect” šŸ˜‰

At 26 I’d surprised if Skap doesn’t consider coming back to a high level european team for a season or two instead of playing in the G-League, but maybe he’ll latch a contract as a 2-way or end-of-the-bench guy with us or somebody else.
The more Huk moves away from his injury the better, he has skills to work on.

    – It was the best game I’ve seen Rokas play this season and a top-5 performance in the full 3 years (sample size 70+ games).
He finally did what he needed to do, played with decision and personality, didn’t shy away from shots and had his moments on defense, where he was focused all game long.
The frustrating part, for me, is that he showed flashes of this in his first season (right after his draft) and then he basically disappeared, playing “plain vanilla” for the last two seasons.
    Let’s see what happens*.

    – Baugh, whose Twitter/Instagram handle by the way is “Swaggyd2”, is fun to watch, Duane Washington is not.

    – I doubt Justin Lewis (nickname “jusbuckets”) could ever play for Tom Thibodeau šŸ˜€

Next game tomorrow against the Pistons.

    * I’ll not be surprised if he hangs on as the 13th-15th man on the bench, hundreds of players currently not in the NBA can do it.
Once upon a time the idea was that he can be better than that and yesterday’s version of Rokas still should.

    Max:
-Agree on Kolek. I would be unpleasantly surprised if he didn’t play a few hundred minutes this year.
-Dadiet has been a mild disappointment for me. The shot looks rushed and flat. However, he seems physically tougher than I expected. He spaces out, but when engaged, he seemed to like contact when playing D and he went hard to the boards. In fact, the rebounding has been somewhat better than I expected. But I do see a player in there…he’s not Kevin Knox, but he’s not Melo either. If there was a redraft, I’d probably take someone else.
-Slappin’Stiff is not happening, sorry if that offends!
-Huk had a better game yesterday. Definitely has some upside…but how much and when it will be realized are open questions. Probably will remain behind Sims on the depth chart for the better part of this season, and then it will all be about his development arc. I think he’s certainly a great use of the last pick in the draft, so there’s that!
-Rokas looked intriguing. I have been out on him, but he showed out very well and looked like he could be an actual project. Does he make Deuce expendable? Not yet, but if you squint you can see it. Hopefully not though.
-Baugh was pronounced “Bow” in a G-League film I watched. I expect him to bow out into G-League oblivion for the duration of this season. He does have a turbocharged motor…just in too small of a car.
-Duane Washington Jr. grabs his hammy and doesn’t get back on D but still had enough to cherry pick a dunk. I’ll pass. (He won’t. Like, ever.)
-I.m glad you brought up Justin Lewis. He looked pretty smooth to me. I didn’t really track him because I was like who is this? But his shooting form definitely caught my eye. I hope to see more of him in Game 4.

Baugh was pronounced ā€œBowā€ in a G-League film I watched.

Is that “Bow” as in “the actor took a bow after the performance,” or “Bow” as in “he tied that ribbon into a bow”? Same spelling, different pronunciations.

Can someone explain to me why “we” don’t seem to like Skapintsev? 13 and 7 with over a steal in 18 minutes per game on 78 percent FG shooting (with good advanced stats) seems like someone who might be useful, especially at 7-foot-1.

Re: Precious not being signed, Katz’s theory that I agree with is that his best chance at getting something above the minimum is to be patient with the Knicks.

Whether they bring him back using his bird rights or use those bird rights to make a sign-and-trade work, he’d likely get more than he would from ditching them for a team without his bird rights.

Basically, like most other non-max free agents, in the Age of the Aprons he’s getting squeezed.

Doogie, I can only give my personal explanation: He does not have the ability to move laterally that would make him a viable defensive player in the NBA. Let’s keep in mind that he has been on the Knicks’ G-League team for two years, meaning that only the likes of Jericho Sims was blocking his path to the NBA. He even had a brief call-up.

He’s 26 years old and looks exactly the same as he did at 25 and 24. There is literally nothing there left to squeeze. Summer League stats for guys who have been around the G-League block mean less than zero unless they are off the charts.

Summer League is a helter-skelter shit show, and any scrub can shine if things fall their way, especially if they have some NBA-like experience. Similarly, guys who are used to a highly-organized game can be a fish out of water in summer league. You really have to concentrate on specific NBA-level skills in specific situations. I have noticed several times that Skap has just stood there with his arms up while guys blew right by him, and by the time he moved the play was past him…even worse, he would get there late and just foul someone. Or he would try to box out but just couldn’t move his feet fast enough. And that’s against G-Leaguers and rookies.

Fair enough, Z-man. Makes sense; thanks for the clarification.

I’d still be worried if I went to a pick-up game across the street from my place and he was there on the court. šŸ™‚

Anyone have any experience playing in pick-up games with NBA guys, even fringe guys? I played in one game with (Slam Dunk Champion) Terrence Stansbury. He was on my team. All anyone had to do was throw it up in the air towards his general vicinity and he would grab it and dunk the hell out of it almost without fail.

Whoops. Stansbury never won the Slam Dunk Contest. He did place third in it for three straight years (1985-1987). Apologize for the error.

Iā€™m sold on Kolek, heā€™s slow and heā€™ll suffer on defense but he showed me he can stay on the floor.
I really like the way he plays especially when he finds the balance between passing and shooting (IMO he leaned on passing too much in the first two games).

This. It’s exactly why I hated the comp to McConnell. While my hopes were that he could have a McConnell-like impact, he’s not the same. For one, McConnell is much quicker while Kolek is more methodical. They do have the same peskiness though. The good thing is- Kolek can easily improve his quickness and agility being the gym rat that he is. Being the break in case of emergency PG that he’s expected to be this season, he’ll have time to improve his body and hone his craft. But he’ll have to grind through it because he’s too good for G League. Maybe we keep him there so he can get reps, I dunno. Being a Georgetown fan, I hated when we played against him. Love him on the Knicks though because of the new wrinkle he adds. And what he does can be extremely beneficial with guys who can shoot on the roster like Brunson, DiVincenzo, Bridges, Anunoby, and Deuce. He’ll also help our rim runners if he ever gets minutes. Such a good pick.

Dadiet has loads of potential. I can see him trying to put it all together in games, but he’s thinking way too hard. Not quite sold on Hukporti over Skapintsev yet, but I see why we drafted him. Disappointed we won’t see our McCullar in action though. I think he’s more Tony Allen than Josh Hart, and that is a good thing considering he’s 6’6″.

I’m excited to see what the next move is, because even if Sims steps up- we still need another C who can contribute. Skapintsev seems like a good candidate with his offensive game. Thibs can teach him drop coverage in camp. Hukporti probably has a leg up on him because he’s better with drop coverage and his defensive footwork while a little slow, is fundamentally sound. I always hate this time of year because it makes me excited, and overly anxious for the season to start. ESPECIALLY when the FO makes good moves. For the rest of the summer, can we PLEASE keep Randle, Mitch, Brunson, Hart, Bridges, OG, and DiVincenzo in bubble wrap while still allowing them to get good and safe work in? LOL

I’m just saying..this is a team much like Larry Brown’s championship Pistons squad that matches the blue collar grit of the city they play in and are easy to root for. I haven’t felt this way about this team since Spree was a Knick..or when Childs 2 pieced Kobe(RIP Legend)

When I was in college I played against a guy named Mike Ferrara who was drafted by the then Washington Bullets but blew out his knee. He was a 6’4″ shooting guard, and it was ridiculous how good he was compared to every player I played against at that time, including every other player on the varsity team during my time there.

In my 30’s I played against a guy named Ted Rooney, who is better known as an accomplished actor, had a role in a B-movie called Celtics Pride and for a few episodes in the TV series E.R. as an oncologist. He was 6’7″ and extremely skilled, played pro ball in Germany for a bit. He was impossible for the guys in our game to guard.

I won’t rehash my game as a 50+yo with James “Speedy” Williams, a Rucker Park legend, at the Knicks practice facility. At around age 45-50 himself, he utterly destroyed the younger competition that included lots of college-level players.

Iā€™m usually not one to nitpick (I leave that to Hubie), but I think some criticism of the Dadiet pick is fair, if only because there were guys available who couldā€™ve helped the team in 0-1 years not in 3-4 years.

Shannon Jr. has been looking really good so far, for instance. Maybe they felt like McCullar in round 2 was a good enough version of Shannon, so weā€™ll see.

And btw, one of the best rookies in SL has been Bub Carrington, who is the same age as Dadiet, so I donā€™t really wanna hear the age excuse.

“And btw, one of the best rookies in SL has been Bub Carrington, who is the same age as Dadiet, so I donā€™t really wanna hear the age excuse.”

I don’t get this statement. Just because one outlier is ahead of the game at age 18 doesn’t de-legitimize it as an excuse. Not to mention that he was drafted at #14, eleven spots before Dadiet.

Ess-dog, we’ll never no how much the iHart calculus played into the draft strategy. If they thought there was a good chance he would stay, trading out of 24 and taking the BPA (where P is Project) at 25 makes more sense because not only is iHart setting us up at C, he is taking a roster spot. And using the last pick on Huk would be insurance of sorts. Yet another small reason to rue the iHart loss…

Seems to me we got our guy who can contribute immediately in Kolek, and the rotation wouldn’t have allowed for anyone else to contribute immediately anyway (it’s already a stretch for Kolek).

Under those circumstances, I like the strategy of taking a long-term upside play like Dadiet.

Of course, none of this matters if he’s not actually good…we can circle back on that in three years.

Seems to me we got our guy who can contribute immediately in Kolek, and the rotation wouldnā€™t have allowed for anyone else to contribute immediately anyway

Did we, though? Or is Kolek going to 3rd string behind Payne because he’s not ready to be a backup PG? I think that’s still TBD, and it makes the selection of Kolek over Collier one to keep in mind.

Again, I loved Kolek heading into the draft and am thrilled he’s on the roster but the unexpected fall of Collier made his selection less of a slam dunk.

Dadiet increasingly seems like a smarter way for Leon to hate his draft picks, i.e. a talented but raw prospect is a better way to maintain the trade value of a pick you don’t want to make.

In one year, Dadiet will likely still have the value of a late first round pick in trade talks. And that’s probably the reason we took him.

Under those circumstances, I like the strategy of taking a long-term upside play like Dadiet.

And for the record, Iā€™m not against using #24 to take a long-view, high-upside playerā€¦ and Dadiet was probably one of the best versions of that left on the board (although I also thought Collier was the best high-upside option). But unfortunately, Dadiet looks a lot more like Kev Knox thus far than, say, Tari Eason.

But hey, itā€™s probably just my Knicks PTSD flaring up! He still has a lot to learn and is probably a good, hard-working kid.

Dadiet increasingly seems like a smarter way for Leon to hate his draft picks, i.e. a talented but raw prospect is a better way to maintain the trade value of a pick you donā€™t want to make.

Dang, I was going to mention this initially, but yes: This play also does feel like a different version of the ā€œtrade back for future valueā€ strategy. And shit, maybe itā€™s a smart idea?? Iā€™m sure Ainge would love to get his greasy hands on Dadiet.

I’m on the record as being very high on Collier, but he simply would never have played here such that I can’t really get on Leon for foregoing the pure BPA approach.

It’ll probably be at least 2 seasons before Collier can help his team win games anyway, and even then I see no way him and Brunson could share the floor. It almost certainly would’ve ended in us unceremoniously trading him for scraps before his walk year, AJ Griffin/Obi Toppin style, without ever having gotten value from his rookie-scale deal.

Dadiet’s archetype is theoretically much more plug-and-playable, so if he’s good (big, big “if”), I think he’ll get a chance to provide us with some value before his next contract.

But unfortunately, Dadiet looks a lot more like Kev Knox thus far than, say, Tari Eason.

Dadiet looks nothing like Knox. Dadiet moves much better than Knox ever did, rebounds, is active and is green as grass. Knox showed he could get hot shooting and absolutely zero else. He always looked like a one hour old foal struggling to stay on his feet when moving.

This might date me (!), but I played against Kiki V at the 14th Street Y (pretty sure he shouldn’t have been there).

Acknowledging that Macri isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, he does say this:

‘Ariel Hukporti cracked double digit rebounds for the first time, pulling down 10 in 23 minutes, but heā€™s been outplayed through three games by backup big man Dmytro Skapintsev, who is making a real case for himself as something more than Westchester fodder. Heā€™s already 26 years old, but heā€™s an interesting mix of size and skill for a team that has yet to acquire a backup big man.’

For anyone who just automatically dismisses him, he does also say this:

‘Duane Washington Jr is taking gunning to new levels.’

For anyone who just automatically dismisses him, he does also say this:

ā€˜Duane Washington Jr is taking gunning to new levels.ā€™

I don’t think anyone is “dismissing him” but his obvious physical limitations defensively makes it very difficult to see how he ever gets on the floor especially with Thibs as coach, but for virtually anyone. At 26 his lateral quickness isn’t likely to improve.

If I had to bet my life on who would play the most rotation minutes in their respective careers, I easily take Hukporti.

Knox was also only fast in a straight line. Was slow of foot otherwise.

Skapintsev is more polished than Hukporti, but he’d better be, he’s 26 and Huk is 22. This is probably his ceiling, or close to it. Huk is someone you can develop. And it’s not a ringing endorsement of Skap that their SL performance has been close.

Isn’t Collier also something of a project? He might be good, but he might be Emmanuel Mudiay

But unfortunately, Dadiet looks a lot more like Kev Knox thus far than, say, Tari Eason.

I haven’t watched much Summer League but I disagree. Dadiet hasn’t looked particularly good but he hasn’t looked like Knox. What always stood out to me about Knox is how little body control he seemed to have, like a freshman in HS who just went through a big growth spurt and doesn’t know what to do with his body. Dadiet at least looks like a more fluid athlete even though he might never amount to anything either.

Even if Shannon is ready to play, he’d be behind OG/Mikal/Donte/Hart/Deuce on the depth chart. In theory he could contribute in year 1 but in all practicality that’s never going to happen without us having much bigger problems.

I suspect the FO was higher on Kolek than on Collier and didn’t draft him for that reason. Collier has several major issues to work through (TOs) before you give him playoff minutes.

All Dadiet needs to do is improve his defensive awareness and adjust to the NBA 3pt line. The rest will take longer but it’s just gravy.

When a guy can pass and shoot like Kolek, he already has a major leg up on the competition. You canā€™t really teach court vision and processing to any significant degree. Thereā€™s really only one question with him: is he athletic enough to hang with NBA players? And if not now, when, if at all?

I think he a better pick than Collier for what we need.

oh man, kids a dog and now Iā€™m working on a partnerā€¦a very surprising turn in lifeā€¦

I’m happy for you, Geo. šŸ™‚

I wonā€™t rehash my game as a 50+yo with James ā€œSpeedyā€ Williams, a Rucker Park legend, at the Knicks practice facility. At around age 45-50 himself, he utterly destroyed the younger competition that included lots of college-level players.

Wait a moment… you played a game at the Knicks practice facility? šŸ˜® What more can you tell us about it? Did you crossed paths with a member of the team?

Iā€™m on the record as being very high on Collier, but he simply would never have played here such that I canā€™t really get on Leon for foregoing the pure BPA approach

I think we might be overestimating how much Kolek is likely to play next year with Brunson and Payne and probably even Deuce ahead of him on the positional depth chart.

And if he doesnā€™t play next year, that takes his primary advantage away.

Raven, it’s not that Macri isn’t my cup of tea, it’s that he is an optimist and i think if i played on the Knicks he might see a glimpse of hope in my game too. LOL
But i find Macri to be a cool dude, and i like him. šŸ˜‰

I think Kolek and Payne are the ones to stay, and Payne in the first half of the season helps because with him on the team we can bring Kolek to be a part of the rotation slowly. But probably the idea is to have 2 players ready to be Deuce’s replacement. And until the deadline we either use Deuce to bring a good backup C, or we use Mitch and Deuce to bring a starter C. This is my reading of the situation, but i might be wrong of course.

If Kolek were in an 80ā€™s movie it would be called ā€œBreaking the Glassā€ and itā€™d be something like 3 OClock High meets High School Musical with a little Basketball Diaries thrown in for good measure.

This is the most compelling Knicks team since at least the last championship. One of the most rootable/likable teams in NBA history.

This might be a cliff year for the Bucks.

The Bucks over is my second favorite bet of the summer.

Heā€™s played 2 games and in one of them he had 14 pts, 6 rebs, 6 ast, and 3 steals.

I think the over on Cleveland is a pretty solid bet. Itā€™s 46.5 or 47.5. They won 51 two years ago and actually underachieved their expected win total and this year despite tons of injuries and throwing the last couple games they still won 48.

No reason to think they will be worse.

No reason to think they will be worse.

Plus they replaced their weak link.

Hubert In 3 Vegas SL games Collier is scoring 9 ppg while shooting 12 for 33 overall including 1 for 9 from 3pt range and 2 for 4 from the FT line. He has also committed 13 tos to go along with his 15 asts.

He has rebounded well and gotten a decent amount of steals so there’s that I guess.

Curious, are you expecting an up year from Lillard? Giannis is starting to show wear and Middleton might give em 60 games.

    that sounds about right cyber…

I think deuce is a valid rotational player with an opportunity to get even better…

plus he’s on a great deal…with donte and cam on the bench though – it’ll limit his usefulness for us…

sorry, I think I may have already asked you cyber – do you have any pets?

Skapintsev is more polished than Hukporti, but heā€™d better be, heā€™s 26 and Huk is 22. This is probably his ceiling, or close to it. Huk is someone you can develop. And itā€™s not a ringing endorsement of Skap that their SL performance has been close.

a center that can shoot a three, that would be great to have on the team…

skap don’t look to nimble though…I was surprised to see Huk was 7’…

if I had to choose to keep just one – Huk…

just so every time I write his name – I can think of the hulk šŸ˜Š

Bucks are listed at 50.5 wins, yeah the under seems to make sense there…

the dame/giannis thing doesn’t seem to be working…middleton is perpetually hurt…

Edit: i think the cavs will continue to perform well during the regular season, I’d go with them going over their projected win total…

The Cavs are a really good team, they just have the worst PR in basketball.

Curious, are you expecting an up year from Lillard? Giannis is starting to show wear and Middleton might give em 60 games.

I disagree about Giannis. He just posted a 9.0 bpm season and that injury seemed pretty fluky.

And yes, Iā€™m buying the Lillard dip. I donā€™t know wtf happened to him last year. Everyoneā€™s assuming he aged out but Iā€™m guessing it was something else and he bounces back.

Middelton is a scratch off ticket, just like OG Anunoby. Heā€™ll miss 1/3 to half of the year and theyā€™ll be awesome when he plays.

They did much better in free agency than they had any right to, picking up Wright & Trent.

Rivers has a high baseline. I donā€™t trust him at the highest level but he wonā€™t make all the basic mistakes Griffin made.

They won 49 games last year. I think theyā€™ll be 3-4 games better this year.

They went 17-19 with Rivers. What constitutes a fluke injury? I go the other way on Lillard.

sorry, I think I may have already asked you cyber ā€“ do you have any pets?

I don’t remember, Geo, so here it goes… Lady Cyber is more of a cat person so we usually had 1 cat, but then a cat from our neighbors insisted in coming to our house via the balcony everyday, so after some time we talked to the neighbor and we got a 2nd cat. But this is not over. LOL. Then last year at some point there was little cats around our building, so Lady Cyber and some neighbors helped the little kittens by bringing them food and stuff to keep them warm. Neighbors were talking about adopting some of the kittens, all was going great, until an adult cat joined and of course he was chief among them eating a lot more than the little ones. But the adult cat is super friendly and he liked Lady Cyber right away, meaning to protect the little ones and their food, we have a 3rd cat now. At this rate, if you ask me the same question in 2 years, i’ll probably have 4 cats! šŸ˜€

    all creatures great and small

good plan cyber, fill your life with kindness and love…

that is so awesome…nice to be in the presence of grace, takes a good heart…

    oh my goodness Bob!!!

before i forget – excellent song link yesterday, very much enjoyed the Seatrain…

made me think that despite the notion i have that i don’t really enjoy country, there’s a whole lot of great country music…yeah, what not to enjoy with hank and his son, and a bunch of others…

i think roger miller’s king of the road may have been the first country tune i ever enjoyed…

    trailers for sale or rent
    Rooms to let, 50 cents
No phone, no pool, no pets
    I ain’t got no cigarettes

made me think that despite the notion i have that i donā€™t really enjoy country, thereā€™s a whole lot of great country musicā€¦yeah, what not to enjoy with hank and his son, and a bunch of othersā€¦

Learning that there’s actually good country music and it isn’t just the absolute dreck on the radio was a shock to be.

But, is “Hank” Hank Williams? Because his son sucks. His grandson, Hank Williams III, is great.

Ya’ll ever listen to Sarah Shook, been on my regular playlists for years. Girl Country is my favorite.

    i’m not sure ThisChicanery…

going through hank jr’s songs now on youtube…

i’ll listen again to some of hank senior…i don’t think i knew there was a third šŸ™‚

You canā€™t really teach court vision

I know I’m not alone and I’m pretty late to the party, but Catlin Clark is forcing me to watch WNBA games . She’s an amazing talent. She’s blessed with both incredible court vision and passing skills.

Middelton is a scratch off ticket, just like OG Anunoby. Heā€™ll miss 1/3 to half of the year and theyā€™ll be awesome when he plays.

Didn’t Middleton just have surgery on both ankles? He’s 33 next month 6 years older than OG.

I donā€™t know wtf happened to him last year.

Weeks ago I heard in a podcast (or read in an Athletic’s piece) that Dame was going through a painful divorce and his kids did stay in Portland with their mother.
Maybe this could explain something, he did look mentally off for most of the season.

If you like rock/country fusion with a touch of the Old Testamentā€¦

Itā€™s a pretty narrow genre, and Iā€™d have to go through the entire Old Testament to know what officially qualifies, but off the top of my head Jokerman is probably my personal favorite.

Itā€™s an interesting debate about how Milwaukee will do I personally think they might be a play in team or slightly better. The top of the East is crowded. And, even though it makes no difference to us now, Iā€™m curious how their top four protected first rounder that we just traded away does.

They went 17-19 with Rivers. What constitutes a fluke injury? I go the other way on Lillard.

Totally reasonable. Dame is a head scratcher. His drop was precipitous. Something tells me it can be explained by something other than the end of his time but šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

Didnā€™t Middleton just have surgery on both ankles? Heā€™s 33 next month 6 years older than OG.

Middleton played 82 games when he was Anunobyā€™s age. Now at age 33 theyā€™re the same.

OG is a special kind of brittle. You canā€™t reasonably expect him to play more than a 33 y/o wing who just had two surgeries.

I really don’t get why the Knicks would check in on Clint Capela. Seems like that ship would have sailed the moment we signed Mikal.

“Wait a momentā€¦ you played a game at the Knicks practice facility? šŸ˜® What more can you tell us about it? Did you crossed paths with a member of the team?”

About a decade ago, A friend of mine who ran a high-level local league came to our weekly pick-up and ask if any of us wanted to play as a stand-in for a team that had to forfeit during the playoffs. When I heard it was at the practice facility, I jumped at the chance, as did one of the other dads I played with.

The facility is pretty standard, a warehouse-style rectangular building with 2 or 3 regulation full courts, no stands. My son came with me. I saw the team we would be playing against and was very worried…they all looked like ex-D1 players and some were like 6’8″ and burly.

I found the guy who invited us and said “damn, we’re no match for these guys, you trying to get us killed?” He deadpans, “Don’t worry, you got Speedy.” I look at the guy he gestured to, he looked well into his 40’s, maybe 6’0″…kinda had a Derek Fisher vibe when he was warming up. I wasn’t all that impressed until the game started…then he just effortlessly started making shots from everywhere. We wound up winning in a nail-biter, with Speedy just dominating down the stretch. For the record, I did swish two mid-range jumpers but didn’t see the ball all that much.

There were two ex-Knicks hanging around: John Starks and Charles Smith. I didn’t really interact with them. Smith seemed kind of shy, just dribbled a ball a bit in his street clothes.
