NBA Power Rankings: A new NBA hierarchy arises after the draft and free agency

What a boring start to the day.

You can day dream about Tile Collector, our new 3rd string rookie PG.

    OK. Let me try that.

Why is that his new nickname, though?

Should Jalen’s financial sacrifice for the team be a factor in next season’s MVP voting? I think it should.

Not sure why it would be. The only ones who care about it at all are fans of the Knicks.

Yeah, in a vacuum I don’t think MVP voting should take into account anything but on-court contributions. That said, having an excellent character and being a good locker room guy and leader is probably part of what voters take into account when making decisions, so it certainly might be a factor in the minds of some voters.

Brunson is a great story. I can see him winning an MVP on that basis, sort of in the Steve Nash mold. There have been many MVPs that won on the basis of a narrative rather than strict on-court production.

iHart and Huk being old friends and iHart looking out for his buddy is really nice to see.

Too bad iHart couldn’t stay and give us even more Power of Friendship energy on the team. Alas!

If signing a contract substantially below market value allows the team to sign a player it would otherwise could not afford and that player contributes to more wins, that certainly adds value to the team. Since it happens so rarely, it’s almost impossible to determine if it factors into voters’ thinking. JB has certainly been a major contributor to changing the culture of the team and this is just another example of it.

He eschewed some money now to make more on the back end and come out net-net ahead and he signed now rather than a year from now to mitigate the risk of him blowing out his knee or suffering some other career-ending or hindering injury.

IOW, on a risk-adjusted, net-net basis, he really didn’t “give anything up.” It was an entirely economically rational decision. Not sure why people have the psychic need to think he (or anyone else) did.

Well, MVP trophies are all about the narrative. If the Knicks win more than 55 games while playing great team basketball and Brunson is their best player, he has a great chance to win MVP because of everything surrounding him. The contract should factor in, too.

That might be the worst E take of all time. It’s true that four years from now Brunson can theoretically recoup much of the money. But I mean, the idea that he didn’t “give anything up” because of that flies in the face of NBA history. Four years is an eternity!

TNFH it is also false because he could have structured the contract so that he had just as much ability to sign the 10-year supermax in that year.

It is fair to say that he didn’t give up $116M or whatever…probably more in the mid-10s of millions…but he absolutely gave up a shitload of money that certainly would have justified any risk associated with waiting until he became eligible for the higher-priced extension next year.

    But E’s gotta E…

PS Worst E take of all time? That’s a very high bar…under scrutiny, it might not even make the top 10.

for some reason damion baugh seemed to stick out…

Agree. He won a bunch of hustle plays, seemed to have another gear compared to everyone else.

I had to look up his number to see who he was but didn’t post anything on him because it was just a handful of plays. Worth keeping an eye on him the next couple of games.

His flaws are on the offensive side where he can’t shoot all that well, but did hit over 80% of his g-league FTs last year. Doesn’t have much of a midrange game either. Apparently can do some playmaking. Has a 6’8″ wingspan.

Vecenie ranked him 84th in the 2023 draft, it was too low to get a summary on him.

Here’s an amateur scouting report out of college from a guy who I think is decent at them:

Tile Collector is kind of a stupid nickname for Tyler Kolek, as it has literally nothing to do with basketball. Maybe it could be the new nickname for this forum, though. 🙂

Tile Collector? Ugh. Sounds like the title of a home improvement store.

I mean, just call him TK or TyKo and be done with it!

Kolek: The Night Stalker would be interesting from a vintage TV show perspective, but a certain serial killer already co-opted that one. Maybe the Dime Stalker?

    Yeah, no.

Fitting with today’s “norm,” it would be more like TKole (pronounced “TEE-kol), but I kind of prefer TyKo.

    Yeah, no.

Don’t try to force it…. it will come on its own…

“Worth keeping an eye on him the next couple of games.”

I don’t think any player in summer league is much worth keeping an eye on unless a) he is either a draft pick, b) he is a player at a position of need, or c) he is dominating the competition. Baugh seems like a garden-variety G-Leaguer to me. Most of those guys have a skill that stands out a bit…but also have a fatal flaw. Baugh seems like a big defensive wing trapped in a shooting guard’s body.

On TyKo. Similar to Tycho Brahe, the astronomer.

And, there was a Tycho Base in 2001: A Space Odyssey (my favorite film). So, works for me!

Some observations of note from Katz on today’s Knicks Film School podcast:

    1. While he’s not reporting anything on Precious, his guess at this point is that the Knicks have asked Precious to wait on a potential sign-and-trade opportunity, and he’s willing to wait because the market hasn’t been there for him and this would be a chance to get paid — possibly even overpaid, depending on whom he might be traded for. And if a trade doesn’t materialize, he guesses the Knicks would just re-sign Precious anyway, and potentially use him in a trade later.

    2. Fred doesn’t think the Knicks are desperate to try to solve the backup center problem right now unless a perfect opportunity presents itself. While the FO is all-in on the Villanova core, it’s a multi-season window, rather than a single championship-or-bust year. But also, they could go into the year, discover that they are getting by just fine with some combo of Mitch, Precious, and Sims, and then have a different problem present itself that our current meager trade assets would be more useful for.

    3. He wouldn’t read anything into Rokas not starting on Saturday, especially since Rokas was just coming off of some intense tournament play, and was a late arrival to the club, whereas the other guys had been practicing more with Coach Dice and were better-rested. And also, he figures Washington is starting as a “political” thing — i.e., he played the good soldier with the team last year in terms of just being a practice body without complaint, so now they’re showcasing him in Vegas to see if he can latch on somewhere else.

    4. He and Macri talked for a bit about what might happen if Julius doesn’t get, or take, a contract extension offer next month. Too nuanced to try to summarize here, but the most important point also applies to Brunson, which is that the Rose FO has developed a reputation of being straight with its players, and trying to do right by them even when it’s not working out here. (i.e., they traded Obi and RJ to the best possible situation for each of them.)

4a)Fred also offered some prime E fodder with the news that James Dolan loves Julius Randle.

Good. I hope they keep Julius. I would hate to see him go after how long he’s been here.

The Jazz have asked the Warriors for Jonathan Kuminga, Brandon Podziemski, Moses Moody, plus multiple first-round picks in Lauri Markkanen trade talks

I know the Warriors remain high on Kuminga, but I just haven’t seen it. And Moody is easily replaceable via Warrior System Function. Podziemski is probably the guy I’d try to hold on to, but Marianne [that’s what spell check insists on, so I’ll just let it have its way] is really good and would basically revert the Klay Thompson role back to prime, so I can see the Warriors coming out of that negotiation in good shape if it happens.

Danny going to leak some great we almost had a deal stories when Lauri signs an extension

Tile Collector is kind of a stupid nickname for Tyler Kolek, as it has literally nothing to do with basketball.

A short history of basketball nicknames.

    Wilt “The Stilt” Chamberlain
    The Big O
    Big Red
    Walt “Clyde” Frazier
    “Dollar” Bill Bradley
Earl “The Pearl” Black Jesus” “Jesus” Monroe
    Sleepy Floyd
    Earvin “Magic” Johnson
    Clyde “The Glide” Drexler
    Hakeem “The Dream” Olajuwon
    The Mailman
    The Admiral
    Dennis “The Worm” Rodman
    “Penny” Hardaway
    Reign Man
    The Answer
    The Truth
    White Chocolate
    The Matrix
    King James

Notice how those nicknames are not attempts to simply create other words based on homophones of the players’ actual names? Probably “Wilt the Stilt” is the closest, but at least that one uses a rhyming word.

Daryl ” Chocolate Thunder” Dawkins, who IIRC used to name his dunks.
    edit:
George ” Iceman” Gervin. Daryl ” Dr Dunkenstein” Griffith. Billy ” The Whopper” Paultz ( named if the BK burger)

Don’t forget Bryant “Big Country” Reeves. But my overall point still stands.

Do toll collectors hand out dimes? I think they’re more known for taking them. Maybe if you think of them handing out dimes as change…….

Just go with “The Collector” no need to complicate it with extraneous adjectives

Tile Collector is an atrocious nickname for a basketball player no offense to whoever thought it up

I was just trying to entertain Doogie, since he was bored. But The Collector is nice. Maybe Clarence will use it for one of his characters.

He’s a second round pick and potentially a backup PG. I think “Tyler Kolek” is just fine for now

I was personally hoping for Klekol Leytr but I keep trying to make it about fried chicken. Nothing yet.

    Tyler “The Tailor” Kolek.

No? Well, he’s “tailor made” to the be the Knicks’ backup point guard.

If he stands out defensively, can’t that count as dominant under (c) or does he need to score 30pts a game? He picked up 2 steals in 18 minutes and played, which isn’t nothing.

I’m not earmarking him for the hall of fame, he just looked better than the average SL player this game. Maybe he’s worth a 2-way for a team or maybe he looks like garbage the rest of the way.

    It’s not a big deal.

Notice how those nicknames are not attempts to simply create other words based on homophones of the players’ actual names?

I thought the problem was that it wasn’t related to basketball?

I mean the obvious nickname is Tyler the Creator

Was also thinking of pitching this or Tyler the Collector

If you insist on it relating to basketball, he collects stats or assists or whatever

I was going to congratulate Doogie on his homophonic attempt to explain Tyler’s attempted nickname — rolling with the punches, Doogie, great to see! But then, no.

Tycho’s actually a family name here, nephew’s middle name but he went by it until he got too old to appreciate being named after a guy whose nose got cut off.

I thought Baugh brought a lot of energy. Made a bunch of mistakes (foot on the line, etc.), but he was pushing hard to do something good. He’s probably just a moke, but I’ll keep an eye on him.

If I was the Warriors I would try to also get Sexton in the trade. I would offer something like: Wiggins, Moody, one of Kuminga/Podziemski, 2025 1st, 2027 1st, 2030 protected 21-30(Wash owns the rights), and swaps in 2028, 2029, and 2031.

I don’t think I would offer all three of my young players. I would also try and keep Podziemski over Kuminga but I would ultimately let Utah choose.

If Utah didn’t want to move Sexton then I would probably keep Wiggins and Moody out of the trade and throw in Looney or Payton as salary filler instead and also keep a couple of the swaps out of the deal.

San Antonio is the other team sniffing around Markkanen and if they make a big offer they will beat any offer Golden State can make but if they don’t then Utah doesn’t have a ton of other options. Outside of San Antonio I don’t think Utah is getting more than this anywhere. 2028, 2029, 2030, and 2031 GSW picks will potentially be very valuable because Curry and Green will likely be gone and Golden State could very well be a lottery team.

I probably have higher expectation for Tyler than most of you. I’m going with The Solution.

I don’t know that the Warriors should be chasing any win now moves but I do like Lauri a lot

If I was a Timberwolves fan I would be excited about some of the young players. Shannon Jr has looked good (I’m still glad we didn’t take him), Dillingham has shown flashes, so has Minott, and Nix has been excellent. I would also be excited about Jaylen Clark. I liked him in last years draft, he missed all of last season with an injury, he has recorded 9 steals in 37 minutes in the summer league so far. That tracks since he averaged 3.4 steals per 40 his last year in college.

I also think Houston is in great shape. Sheppard looks amazing and Whitmore absolutely looks like the real deal. I think they could definitely challenge for a playoff spot this year and could be really good in a couple years. I would put them 3rd behind OKC and San Antonio for very young teams with bright futures.

I agree that the Warriors shouldn’t really be in win now mode but they are sort of stuck having to keep pushing since Curry only has a couple of great years left.

“If he stands out defensively, can’t that count as dominant under (c) or does he need to score 30pts a game? He picked up 2 steals in 18 minutes and played, which isn’t nothing.”

Steals against scrubs is pretty much nothing. He had plenty of steals in college and the G-League (8th in steals per game), but even a team desperate for bench pieces like the Lakers didn’t bring him up for a single minute. He doesn’t need to score 30 pts a game, but he needs to look significantly better than the “competition.”

“…he just looked better than the average SL player this game. Maybe he’s worth a 2-way for a team or maybe he looks like garbage the rest of the way.”

I strongly disagree. Two replacement-level players on our own team (Washington Jr. and Toppin) looked far more impactful in their respective minutes than Baugh. You can make an argument for Skapintsev showing as much. He seemed like the very definition of the “average SL player.”

“I thought Baugh brought a lot of energy. Made a bunch of mistakes (foot on the line, etc.), but he was pushing hard to do something good. He’s probably just a moke, but I’ll keep an eye on him.”

It’s summer league, so we are all probably “keeping an eye on” whoever is out there just for kicks. And sure, maybe he becomes a 2-way level player somewhere at sometime in the future. But he looks like the same guy that put up “nothing special” stats in the G-League last year.

“Shannon Jr has looked good (I’m still glad we didn’t take him)”

He definitely looks good. He is just about 24 years old, though.

“I also think Houston is in great shape. Sheppard looks amazing and Whitmore absolutely looks like the real deal.”

Yeah, I agree. I still don’t really get why Cam fell as far as he did in the draft. I know the purported reasons, but they didn’t make sense then and still don’t.

I’m good with that, not that anyone here cares. LOL

Only problem with it is that it doesn’t roll easily off the tongue, as in commentators saying it during the course of a game. Nicknames are typically just a couple of syllables, and this one is six syllables.

    Evan Sidery @esidery

The Jazz have asked the Warriors for Jonathan Kuminga, Brandon Podziemski, Moses Moody, plus multiple first-round picks in Lauri Markkanen trade talks, per @ShamsCharania

I’m very much in favor of trying to get as much as you can for your products, services or in this case players. But within that some people make me want to throw up. I wish every owner and GM would take Ainge’s number out of their contact list and block his number. Maybe he would get the message.

I vote for TKO as in technical knockout. Quick, easy to remember, based on his name, funny and possibly appropriate if he start knocking teams out with his playmaking.

Stein now reporting that Mikal might sign a below-market 4 year extension next week (which might just be the 4 year max like Brunson). Again, in the 2nd apron era, these wins on the margins allow for a lot more flexibility.

I’m good with that, not that anyone here cares. LOL

Only problem with it is that it doesn’t roll easily off the tongue, as in commentators saying it during the course of a game. Nicknames are typically just a couple of syllables, and this one is six syllables.

Just shorten it to “The Creator” during the game

Someone needs to send Breen and Clyde some of Tyler’s music

that’s big news if it happens marechal…if julius follows with the same, that would also be big…

seems to be a fair amount of trust going on within the organization…

recent pics of leon seem to indicate him slimming down a bit also, he may just be starting to hit his prime…

You guys can call him anything you want. I’m calling him TKO. It’s less to type.

If this was a condition of bringing Mikal aboard, I’d feel much better about the price we paid. The paycut Jalen took is still wild to me.

While the FO is all-in on the Villanova core, it’s a multi-season window, rather than a single championship-or-bust year.

It’s a multi-year window but it’s not the biggest window either with Randle hitting 30 this year. It did work pretty well for Dallas though. We’re just incredibly dependent on Mitch staying healthy for an entire playoff run this year.

    3. He wouldn’t read anything into Rokas not starting on Saturday, especially since Rokas was just coming off of some intense tournament play, and was a late arrival to the club, whereas the other guys had been practicing more with Coach Dice and were better-rested.

I hope so, Rokas looked pretty terrible for his age last game and for much of the Olympic qualifiers. I thought he looked better last time he was in SL, not that my memory is the freshest on his last stint.

Also kinda felt like Thibs started to grow up a little mid season. Prime on the way? I’m antsy. We’re so close and at any moment Orson Welles could drop his tentacles out of the sky and turn this place into breakfast.

any questions as towards if tyler can deal with getting trapped, high pressure from someone quick and strong…

thankfully we’ll have more than a few players in practice to help him along…

“Someone needs to send Breen and Clyde some of Tyler’s music”

They definitely need to watch the video for Yonkers.

I really don’t have a single worry about Kolek on offense. He’s got plenty of game and will learn a shitload from Brunson. It’s his D I’m a bit worried about. But not too much. He can learn from Brunson there as well. In fact, I think Brunson is a near-perfect role model for him.

I like that he looks physically tough. He’s also pretty much the same size as Sheppard and Dillingham. His vertical/agility/speed numbers at the combine aren’t anything special, but he should be more than athletic enough. He’s actually quite close to Brunson in that regard as well. At their respective combines:
    Height: Brunson 6’1”, Kolek 6’1.25″
Standing reach: Brunson 8’0″, Kolek 7’11”
    Weight: Brunson 198.4, 196.6
    Wingspan: Brunson 6’4″, Kolek 6’2.75″
Hand length Brunson 8.25″, Kolek 8.25″
Hand width: Brunson 9.25″, Kolek 9.50″
Lane agility” Brunson 10.59, Kolek 10.97
Shuttle run: Brunson 3.11, Kolek 3.08
    3/4 sprint: Brunson 3.15, Kolek 3.27
    No-step vertical: Brunson 29.0″, Kolek 27.0′
Max vertical: Brunson 37″, Kolek 34″

Seems like 2-3″ is possibly a significant difference in their vertical numbers, but it also seems like Brunson’s game is not very dependent on his verticality. Kolek is probably very similar in terms of processing the floor, his passing numbers in college were actually better than Brunson’s and they had virtually identical BPM numbers (Brunson as JR vs. Kolek as SR).

…Cam Payne? Has to be some kind of Shake Milton-esque agent glad-handing right?

I mean, I guess he’s solidly in the “won’t humiliate you if you have 4 injuries category,” so I won’t complain. I have been specifically asking for a few more of those guys.

Why did we sign Payne? Are we trying to give opponents eye cancer when they see his jumpshot form?

    Where’s our backup C?

Cam Payne ain’t bad. Can shoot the 3 a little and do some playmaking. Can even create his own shot a little. Basically a younger version of Alvin Burfz.

Payne is guard depth for when Deuce gets traded in a deal presumably for a Center?

We are cooking up a nickname for a second rounder while the PIstons signed Tobias Harris. Makes you realize how good we have it.

I’m very much in favor of trying to get as much as you can for your products, services or in this case players. But within that some people make me want to throw up. I wish every owner and GM would take Ainge’s number out of their contact list and block his number. Maybe he would get the message.

I don’t get this line of country at all.

Ainge is doing his job and he is doing it very well. There are a number of teams salivating over the Finn and it is his job to milk the last piaster in value out of him. He doesn’t have to trade him and he has at least to 10/1 until he has to worry about it. He’s going to get as much for Markkenen as he did for Mitchell FFS…

I’m not going to complain about having a bench of players that actually give competent NBA minutes plus a bunch of rookies.

I remember that Markkanen didn’t look so good on the Cavaliers. I wonder if being the go to player at Utah has pushed up his numbers and he won’t look as good on another team. If Ainge thinks this it could explain why he’s willing trade someone who’s actually pretty young and could otherwise be considered the start of the next good Jazz team.

The problem with Markaten on the Cavs was…the Cavs. They played him predominantly at the 3, which is obviously not his best, or even second best, position.

He’s actually increased his usage and his efficiency in Utah, so it’s definitely not a stat inflation situation. He’d be a stud for any team.

Payne played 1300 minutes last year, and had a 98 TS+ on reasonably high usage, with a low assisted basket rate. He shot .390 from 3PT. Had 5.7 assists per 36.

Perfectly fine addition to the bench on a 1/3 deal.

Cam Payne is like the perfect vet’s minimum bench piece. He’s good enough to play 10-15 backup minutes on a playoff team, and cheap enough to waive at any time with no consequences if he either sucks or whines about playing time.

This takes a lot of pressure off of Kolek to perform right out of the box. He can split time as necessary with the Westchester Knicks without any measurable effect on our rotation. He is likely to have been endorsed by Mikal, otherwise my guess is that that Leon would have passed on him.

    I absolutely love the move.

I like Cam Payne because he looks like an elf. But if he’s signing because Deuce is gone, that will make me very, very sad. He’s the last vestige of our ‘home-grown youth movement,’ and my absolute favorite Knick to root for. Even back when he sucked.

Cam is perfectly cromulent from a we don’t want to go into the season with our backup PG being a rookie 2nd round draft pick standpoint.

One note on Miles McBride: I don’t think Knicks signing Cam Payne is a direct reflection of how they view McBride. They had no interest in including McBride in Mikal Bridges deal & have said this offseason that they view McBride as an off-ball guard who can also handle the ball

Lot of names floated and then out of the blue here’s Cam Payne.

Leon did it again and it looks like he’s really focused about making fun of the Beat Writers Army.
If you want to work for The Family you must know how to keep your mouth shut…

Payne was very annoying recently against us in the playoffs (as EBW correctly remember) and he has a history of being fearless even in clutch situations.

On a minimum contract he’s a good sign, the bench gets deeper.

If it means that Deuce is on the launch pad… I love the guy but it depends in which kind of trade he possibly goes.

Thank you, DRed (and Ian). I will continue to live in my little echo chamber of hope.

I don’t know who just sang the anthem before the Home Run Derby but without exaggeration it was the worst performance I’ve ever heard

I don’t get this line of country at all.

I understand what his job is, but when every deal you make has to be a robbery, imo it’s not good for the league, fans or players. You can get the best of a deal without holding people up. You can make a fair deal once in awhile to help facilitate moves that get players where they want and still help your team. I think teams and agents should just freeze him out for a couple years.

“I understand what his job is, but when every deal you make has to be a robbery, imo it’s not good for the league, fans or players. You can get the best of a deal without holding people up. This would amount to collusion, which strikes me as all kinds of illegal. Beyond that, why would any team or agent want to do that? Did anyone care that the Nets just held up the Knicks for every penny they could get? That’s a GM’s job…to maximize the value of his assets. I don’t begrudge Ainge one bit, nor should anyone else. In fact he’s a model to follow.

I understand what his job is, but when every deal you make has to be a robbery, imo it’s not good for the league, fans or players.

I am mystified by this, Strat.

His job is not to do what is good for the league (that’s Adam Silver’s job). His job isn’t to facilitate move we’d like to see, his job is to make the absolute best trade possible for his employer.

He does a pretty good bloody job of that.

I wouldn’t be surprised if a shark like Steve Cohen hires him to run the Mets… Ainge was a pretty good baseball player. I know in 6 months he cold figure out how to do a better job than Cashman…. 🙂

Why are you pointing that out to Raven? I missed where he wrote anything indicating that he thought Mitch was gone.

Because I like to read what other people write, think about it, and respond.

“I have read rumors of a potential Deuce for Nick Richards trade…”

I don’t get why we would trade anything good for Nick Richards, his advanced stats kinda suck…-0.8 OEMP, -1.4 DEPM, BPM just as bad, despite what look like reasonably numbers for a low-usage rim protector…am I missing anything?

Just booked a detour to Vegas tomorrow. The Collector better come through for us

Yes, I get that. I just don’t see what Raven said about Mitch that indicates that he thinks we no longer have Mitch. I’ve done searches and haven’t found it, but there is a chance that I’ve missed it.

the heirloom tomato croissant at radio is a banger atm

Couldn’t care less. I don’t even know what an “heirloom tomato croissant” is, and somehow I’m OK with that. 😀

As always, I trust Ian Begley’s reporting, and am assuming this is all just part of the larger plan to avoid ever having the likes of Charlie Brown Jr. at the end of the bench again. It’s beginning to feel, though, like there may not be room for Ryan III: The Search For Arcidiacono

Doogie, I honestly wish you prosperity. It’s not my job to explain to you anything. If you don’t understand what I’m saying or why, that’s likely to my detriment cuz you seem really really really interesting. But I’m impatient. So I don’t think it’s gonna work out between us. Good luck homie.

“I like Cam Payne because he looks like an elf. But if he’s signing because Deuce is gone, that will make me very, very sad. He’s the last vestige of our ‘home-grown youth movement,’ and my absolute favorite Knick to root for. Even back when he sucked.”

CB replies: Raven, we still have Mitch.

Was this not an obvious enough connection for you, Doogie?

ESPN has updated the Knicks roster to include Cam Payne, but the list has a total of 19 players on it now, including Precious.

Nope, it wasn’t. I’m still working/multi-tasking. As I said a couple of times, I might have missed it. I didn’t say that it wasn’t there/didn’t exist. Thanks for the clarification; I appreciate it.

For further clarification, Doogie. I am also working/multitasking. I’m frantically trying to fulfill a deadline and I get immense pleasure taking breaks reading smart weird funny accomplished – and sometimes not – people talk about something I’ve loved since I was a child. I don’t consider this blog work. It’s a joy to talk about the Knicks with personas that I’ve come to respect and in some cases admire for a variety of reasons. But it is strictly entertainment. I guess what I find so irksome about our interactions is that no matter what the communication is about or when, you always respond with an ask. You ask everyone including me to explain or to adhere or to guide. I’m sure a good lot of it is a bit and some of it is your inner self asking for attention in the way you’ve learned how to ask for attention. And that’s fine. Do you. I am the youngest of three brothers and boy are they fucking intimidatingly smart and successful so I got the “but me” stuff out early. Now I just say what I think in the ways that make me happy. If you don’t get what I’m saying that’s ok. Stop asking me to explain myself to you. I don’t owe you that. Nobody does.

In letter to Board of Governors obtained by ESPN, Knicks owner James Dolan levels continued criticism on league’s revenue sharing policies as part of new $74.6B media rights deal: “The NBA has made the move to an NFL model…We are well on our way to becoming a one size fits all, characterless organization. Just remember we did this on the backs of owners like Jerry Buss.” Story soon.

By my count we have 2 roster spots and a 2-way left for:

    * Precious
    * Rokas
    * McCullar
    * Taxpayer

I’m not 100% sure we re-signed Toppin or just made a QO, which could mean another spot.

I definitely didn’t understand everything in that article, but it sounds like less Clyde and I don’t like that.

In a broader sense, I sort of agree with Dolan about revenue sharing, but he can’t be mad that most people are abandoning cable for streaming content… he should be mad at himself for not adapting to it sooner.

I just hope he doesn’t turn into the destroyer of primes. Nose meet spite style.

    I hear and understand you.

My feeling is that an NBA team is not a corporation competing with other NBA teams in the same way Coke competes with Pepsi. Teams are both working together for their financial benefit and as individuals for their financial benefit.

If one team is repeatedly extreme in its dealings it impacts players and other teams negatively if they cooperate. There’s not much Adam Silver can do about that.

Do I understand why a lot of people would hire him?

    Absolutely.

    I wouldn’t. I think he’s a dick.

They are very different in ways, but he reminds me of Hinkie. They eventually ran Hinkie out the league for the way he operated and treated players even though he was brilliant in other ways.

That’s not going to happen to Ainge. He’s a basketball icon. However, If I was in a position of power in the NBA I’d refuse to do business with him and I’d encourage others to do the same.

I like the Cam Payne signing quite a bit, very passable point guard with tons of playoff experience who won’t hurt us if he ever needs to play. Basically an improvement over Shake Milton for very little cost.

“Basically an improvement over Shake Milton for very little cost.”

Since both involve minimum deals, isn’t it actually no cost at all?

I think Dolan is probably correct, the league is taking lots of stuff away from RSNs like MSG network, but he may not be able to do anything about it. And ESPN writers are probably can’t make any value judgements or editorial comments because ESPN is a beneficiary of less power for RSNs.

Mr. Dolan sir the smart play would be to sell the team for like 8 billion dollars

Is Strat arguing that Ainge is too good a trading and should be voted off the island?

strat-“win trades”o-matic complaining that Trader Danny wins too many trades is pretty good stuff.

I’ve watched more Warriors games than any other team’s over the past bunch of years. I don’t see Kuminga being a player to hold onto at all costs. I know his teammates love him, and he’s still only 21, but he doesn’t seem to finish well despite his athleticism, and he doesn’t seem to shoot well enough for someone who’s not a great finisher. Every time he’s tasked with a big role and big minutes the team never seems to do very well. Am I missing something that the smarter people are seeing? A package centered around Kuminga for the Finnish guy whose name spell check won’t let me write seems like a great trade for the Warriors, who really have to put a top player next to Curry if they can. Am I wrong about Kuminga?

Yes, Donovan Clingan was the 7th pick…….at least that’s what I remember. And yes, I agree that he’s likely better than Kevin Knox. Time will tell, however!

Is Strat arguing that Ainge is too good a trading and should be voted off the island?

strat-“win trades”o-matic complaining that Trader Danny wins too many trades is pretty good stuff.

I’m arguing the extremity of how Ainge operates is not good for the NBA/players and as result not good for the fans.

By way of comparison, Presti is a great dealmaker. He gets good value on almost all his deals. But I don’t hear any complaints about how he treats players and he doesn’t badly damage the teams he does business with.

Ainge is similar to Hinkie in that there is nothing wrong with tanking or winning trades, but Hinkie took tanking to a distasteful extreme and treated players like spread sheet entries so they pushed him out of the league.

I think owners and agents should avoid doing business with Ainge.

I worked for a couple of huge corporations that owned multiple businesses with multiple lines of business within each.

There was some level of internal competition under the major corporation because of salaries, bonuses, and budgets. Employees moved around to suit business needs and when they wanted a change. Sometimes one department befitted more from a change. But no one was poaching the best employees from other departments or badly damaging other departments for their own gain. The ultimate goal was to maximize the company against other major corporations while also maximizing individual results.

    That’s the way sports operate.

Think of the league as the umbrella corporation and each team as a line of business. They are all working to maximize their results as individual lines of business and employees do change hands, but the goal is generally to maximize the whole while competing with other sports and forms of entertainment. The goal is not for one team to keep totally fleecing the weakest links and screw up the league.
