Why Houston Rockets Are NOT Trading Alperen Sengun To The New York Knicks + Summer League Preview

    @ShamsCharania
Denver Nuggets No. 22 overall pick DaRon Holmes II has suffered a torn right Achilles tendon, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium. He’s expected to miss the 2024-25 season. Devastating blow for one of the Nuggets’ promising young pieces.

    This is brutal.

The New York Knicks have explored adding more shooting depth on the free agent market by expressing interest in Latvian forward Davis Bertans, as previously reported by HoopsHype, and guard Landry Shamet, league sources told HoopsHype.

The Knicks are among the teams who’ve expressed interest in Bertans, who shot 39.6 percent from 3-point range in his career and played for Latvia in the FIBA Olympics Qualifying Tournament.

Shamet, a career 38.4 percent 3-point shooter, has also drawn interest from four other teams, who are mentioned in his section below in this story.

New York also remains intent on adding frontcourt depth. The Knicks have expressed interest in Utah Jazz center Walker Kessler, as first reported by HoopsHype, but as SNY’s Ian Begley reported, the Jazz turned down offers from teams for two first-round picks.

Precious Achiuwa, HoopsHype’s top-ranked center available in free agency, remains open to a return to the Knicks. As salary cap expert Yossi Gozlan recently noted, New York is now $15.7 million below the $188.9 million second apron with 12 players. The Knicks have enough flexibility to re-sign Achiuwa and use the $5.2 million taxpayer mid-level exception.

From a longer Mike Scotto notebook: https://hoopshype.com/lists/nba-rumors-team-usa-clippers-76ers-suns-grizzlies-knicks-nets-magic-pistons/

I like the idea of Bertans and Shamet, but only on near minimum deals. They must know that they would not be the rotation unless several guys went down, are they ready for the Fournier treatment?

Sad news for Holmes, he is one of the rookies I was more curious to watch, and definitively a problem for Denver and its short bench.

Actually, I think Bertans would be an outstanding pickup. He’s like a Steve Novak that can actually do a bit more than shoot the 3. He’s 31 years old, so shouldn’t be washed up. He was grossly overpaid on his last contract, but if he could be had at the vet’s minimum or thereabouts, it could be a steal. I also think that he’s got an edge about being jerked around and pilloried for being an overpaid no-D underachiever. He might benefit greatly from the opportunity to play a limited role on a contender at a salary that takes all the pressure off of him.

The guy that gives me some hope for Bertans is Sam Hauser. I remember discussing Hauser as someone who was unplayable on D and yet he has become an invaluable bench player for a championship team because he actually is a better defender than given credit for. I am wondering if Bertans can be similarly undervalued and can learn enough from Thibs to be a Hauser-level defender, or even someone that can be on the floor with Mitch/Precious, OG, Deuce, and Bridges and not be hunted to the point that he kills us. Seems like a great low risk/high reward play to me.

I can see the appeal of Bertans, but every time I see a fan of a team he played recently talk about him, it’s about how completely unplayable he is, so I’m not sure. I’d rather have him at the end of the bench than the guys we had last season because he is at least a verifiable good shooter who can maybe catch fire in one or two games, but I’ll have very low expectations.

Bruno, I get that, but it’s also true that he was being discussed in the context of a 5 year/$80M contract. My guess is that he’d be no worse than Bojan was for us last year…he was similarly unplayable on defense but also provided a spark when he was hitting 3’s. Thing about Bojan was that his main value to us was $20M worth of tradable salary that came in handy in making that Bridges trade. In Bertans’ case, he wouldn’t be that, but could be a similar bench faux-PF sniper at minimal cost.

I’m not sure whether it would be better to have him on a minimum deal or slightly above so that he can be used as salary filler in a trade. But in either role I think he’d be at worst a waivable flyer and at best a minutes-eating 3-pt specialist who takes some pressure off of our bigs when they are nicked up.

I was hoping to get DaRon in the draft, but he was off the board just 2 picks before ours. That is very unfortunate, but i hope he pulls a Randle and gets back from it to have a great career.

That’s 3 guys in the top 22 that are dealing with severe injuries…Topic, Carter and Holmes. Carter might be back by January, but still, that seems unusual.

This is Bertans vs Bojan: https://stathead.com/tiny/91Owp

And if you go to the Per 36 table you’ll see they’re almost twins. The difference is FGA and FTA to make Bojan have a little edge on PTS (19.3 vs 15.4). Bojan has 3.9 FTA per game while Bertans only 2.0, and Bojan has 14.5 FGA while Bertans only 11.8.

About the rest, they’re mostly equal as i said, but Bertans wins the turnover battle, he has only 1.1 per 36 while Bojan has 2.1.

I think i’d like to give a try at Bertans if it’s for the minimum, or some number near the minimum (to circumvent cap rules and be able to trade him with some other player making the min).

In 2025-26, OG + JB + Mikal + Hart + Mitch + Donte + Deuce (so, a starting lineup, a 6th and 7th men) will cost approximately 95% of the cap.

    For reference:

Embiid + Maxey + PG: approximately 94% of the cap.

Brown + Tatum + Jrue: approximately 91% of the cap.

In this era of restrictions, the Nova guys are giving the Knicks the ability to field depth in a way that only teams like OKC can do due to their draft stash.

I think the idea of Bertans is better than the current version of Bertans.

    Today’s Bertans can’t dribble, can’t pass, doesn’t rebound, can’t defend.

He’s a good spot up/catch and shoot three point shooter (he’d fit perfectly the role of “lamp post in the corner” that our offense loved so much once upon a time).

At the recent Olympic Qualifying Tournament, in 94 total minutes, he got 8 total rebounds (at 6’10”), dished 2 assists with 5 turnovers, took 2 2FG, 25 3FG and 4 FTs.

As a 8-years veteran his minimum contract will be 3M and he’s currently in talk with some EL teams.

Maybe when the next flu wave decimates our roster he could be able to win us a couple of games just like Novak did…

I’d honestly pass, but who knows…

Anyway, to me Bojan is a better player (and Fournier too) 🙂

    More In Season Tournament news:
-it is no longer called the in season tournament–rather a very soccerish “Emirates NBA Cup”
-each group now has seeds. Not sure if it has any practical ramifications. We are the number 1 seed in our group, courtesy of being the number 2 seed in the East last year. I knew there was a crucial reason we went all out in the last regular season game, play-off opponents be damned!

it is no longer called the in season tournament–rather a very soccerish “Emirates NBA Cup”

To me it will always be the Silver Cup 😉

marechal, fair enough, but I don’t think that lineup without Randle is a championship-level lineup, so it’s not really a fair comparison. The question then becomes: what can you do to replace Randle with a player that gets you there?

This may come off as blasphemous, but strictly in basketball terms, I don’t think Brunson is or will ever be actually worth a 35% of the cap max salary. Yes, he could have held a gun to our head and demanded it, and Leon would have had to pay him at least something between that and the max of what another team could offer. But I think he will be getting paid closer to what he is worth on a championship-level team than he would be on the max deal he could have signed next year. Even so, it is unbelievably amazing that he actually knows this and sort of paid himself what he thinks he’s worth in that very narrow way of looking at team-building.

Still, the OG contract, the Bridges overpay, and the pending Randle extension make things very murky in terms of actually building that team the way things stand right now. The thing that I am hoping for is that at least one of our 4 draft picks drastically overperforms his draft position. I have high hopes for all of Kolek, Hukporti, and especially Dadiet to either become valuable low-cost rotation pieces or traid bait in a package for an established star involving Randle or Mitch.

“Anyway, to me Bojan is a better player (and Fournier too) 🙂”

Well Fournier had ample opportunity to show his stuff in Detriot and was dreadful, posting a TS% of .482 and shooting 27% from 3. Even in his “good” year with the Knicks, he only put up a TS% of .554.

Meanwhile in a similar situation, Bertans had a .570 TS% and shot 37.5% from 3.

In any case, I think the team needs a deep-bench PF more than a deep-bench SG, and Bojan is unavailable, so Bertans seems like a better fit.

“I don’t think Brunson is or will ever be actually worth a 35% of the cap max salary.”

Just to clarify, that’s not what he was eligible for if he waited until next year…just sayin’.

Far from me to imply signing Fournier 😀 😀 😀

I agree that we need a bench-PF more than a wing, I only mean that, in my opinion, Evan Fournier was a better, more well rounded, basketball player than Bertans.

“Evan Fournier was a better, more well rounded, basketball player than Bertans.”

If by well-rounded you mean equally bad on O and D, I totally agree! 😀

Let’s make sure we all know the airline that’s sponsoring the tournament, Oy.

Psyched for our guard tandem this pm. First look at huk and pac too! Might have 4 NBA players there!

    Few things:
    1. The obvious. I almost agree with Hart right now. Give him a statue lol. Jokes aside..Brunson is about to overtake Bubba Chuck as my favorite player of all time if he keeps this up. Even though it means his next deal will be GINORMOUS, him doing this now means he understands the team’s window matches perfectly with the core’s prime and the timing of the TV deal. It’s definitely a win-win in the best way possible. On top of that, I saw a report saying Bridges is contemplating the same thing when his turn comes. That’s huge. Salute JB.
    2. I’d still take Bertans on a minimum deal to fill a 12-15mpg sniper role for us. As long as it’s the minimum because his presence would complicate the rotation a little.
    3. I am now waiting to see the next shoe drop. What are their plans for Achiuwa and Randle? Now is as good a time as any to make these moves so we can have our team set come training camp. I don’t want another C who can take the job away from Mitch because that move would possibly be for a C who leans towards offense. It’s fine if we use Randle in that deal and keep Mitch for the tandem, I suppose. But outside of centers who are gonna play big minutes at the 5(KAT, Sengun, Ayton?), I don’t see any real moves to make at the 5 unless it’s a cheap backup.

That’s 3 guys in the top 22 that are dealing with severe injuries…Topic, Carter and Holmes. Carter might be back by January, but still, that seems unusual.

Z-Man — I think the odds are still better that three players in the top 22 picks would suffer a severe injury just after the draft, than the odds that a single NBA team would field two different people named Landry in just two decades.

Does anyone know where we might see the Roster for the Knicks summer league game later today? How do we know who we are going to get to see?

Wild. Never thought he’d actually take the extension. We better win that man a championship

TheRant, I was just thinking about that this morning, was going to comment on whether we should exhume Tom Landry for the trifecta!

I just checked the box score and it looks like Daron Holmes II was having an excellent debut before going down. Man, does that suck for the Nuggets.

Of course, we’re going to debut our very own achilles tear victim in just a few hours!

If you look at their % of FGs assisted, Bojan seems a lot more capable of creating his own shot while Bertans can’t really do that anymore… not that Bojan was great at it after he came over.

It probably won’t make a difference anyway as we have Mikal to soak up usage and create shots for the 2nd unit. Hopefully Kolek can too.

Taj to Charlotte. Is Thibs gonna be ok?

Btw weren’t we supposed to extend him by now?

Bertans in the corner is very useful to us considering that Donte is going to be taking a lot of the shots that Burks and Bojan should have been making.

A minimum contract or whatever the incense in Brock Allen’s office tell him.

We need an enforcer. Big or small. Someone to put ankle weights on Embid and KP. 6 fouls. Mean and old and lumberjack.

Bertrans and Shamet are both guys who look better on paper than they do irl. Bertrans has never played in a game that was worth watching, so paper is pretty much all anybody has to go on. Shamet has always looked basically useless every time I’ve seen him play, but maybe it’s coincidental. Has anybody here ever been impressed watching him?

in my opinion, Evan Fournier was a better, more well rounded, basketball player than Bertans.

Literally on the ferry to Capri at the moment. Just passed Fournier Island. All my friends are missing like Anna in L’Avventura

We should probably be comparing Shamet and Bertans to DaQuan and Peanuts instead of Bojan

Life imitates. That sounds lovely af. I’m doing legs rn then jogging up to get some lamb sausage at the Grand Army market and then it’s fucking deadline time. Boooooooo.

Literally on the ferry to Capri at the moment. Just passed Fournier Island.

LOL just on the left of Ischia 😉

All my friends are missing like Anna in L’Avventura

KBA, this is an incredible movie reference! :-O

Max, can you pick me up at the harbor. The taxi line is insane. 😉

    Let’s go summer league Knicks!!

Any of you all catch Zailian’s Ripley? Thoughts… I kinda like it.

Yeah, I loved the RIPLEY series. FWIW I even liked the movie with Damon, Jude, PSH, et al. Totally diff but both dripping with their respective styles.

Serious: Is there no Italian center we could get to solve our backup spot? Just for the fun of it.

Less serious: Can Materazzi rebound? Is he too old to learn a new sport?

Denver has some problems. They’re turning into the Milwaukee bucks west.

I did not like the first episode of Ripley.

Totally understand. It’s pretty granular and slow. For fans of this pace/style Zaillian’s THE NIGHT OF is pretty great, also. Riz is amazing and Bill Camp is extraordinary in it (IMO).

Denver has some problems. They’re turning into the Milwaukee bucks west.

Cheap owner syndrome is tough to overcome.

If Bertans is our 15th man, fine. It’d be unexciting but somehow he’d still be better than the cast of characters who occupied that spot last season.

He’s not remotely close to even the aged version of Bogey, who was influencing NBA playoff games a few months ago. Bertans is probably totally cooked.

One thing to watch for today–the Kolek-to-Huk lob connection should make for good summer league content. Kolek is probably the best lob thrower we’ve had on the team in a long time in general, so it’d be great if he could go on to reactivate that part of Mitch’s game too.

Kolek is probably the best lob thrower we’ve had on the team in a long time

Kolek I really wanna see. His lobs and also if he has a mature way of organizing the team, at least for his experience, thus far.

Has anybody here ever been impressed watching him?

I was surprised by Shamet early on – seemed much more than I expected. But he didn’t really progress, just kind of stayed the same: very useful on a rookie deal, end of bench when not.

There’s something so wholesome about watching the kids join the team and all you root for is their success. You don’t need them to save the team. If any of these picks are singles it’s a major score. Extra base hit… break out the disco ball.

“He’s not remotely close to even the aged version of Bogey, who was influencing NBA playoff games a few months ago. Bertans is probably totally cooked.”

Well, the stats say otherwise. Bojan was a -3.0 in DBPM last year, tied for 4th worst in the NBA. Their overall EPM was almost identically awful, -3.3 for Bojan, -3.5 for Bertans. Since both guys played for terrible teams (their BPMs on those bad teams were pretty much the same), it’s hard to say which one was better, but stats-wise they were very similar. I’d give Bojan an edge because he can create a little, but he was a massive disappointment overall. I’d prefer to take a minimum flyer on a guy who is 3 years younger, but either way, we’re only talking about filling out the back of the roster, so whatever.

I did like The Night Of, I actually watched all the episodes of that one. Really good.

Ripley felt like I was back in college watching student work. Plus, the actor was wayyyyyy too old to pull off being a recent college grad. I guess they cast him because he’s older in subsequent episodes, but it was just too much belief to suspend. And, finally, Lady Walsh likes the Highsmith books, and wasn’t jiving with it at all.

It’s not really worth looking into Bertans’ defensive stats when he could barely see the floor because of how bad he is, but it’s worth pointing out that while their offensive stats might look similar on the surface, the immense difference is Bogey was only assisted on ~65% of his 2PA and 87% of his 3PA while Bertans…doesn’t really score, period, without being assisted.

So I’d take OAKAAK Bojan Bogdanovich over Bertans every day of the week. The good news is neither would be in our opening night rotation anyway.

Ripley felt like I was back in college watching student work. Plus, the actor was wayyyyyy too old to pull off being a recent college grad.

Weirdly kinda what I kinda liked about it. Except for college. The closest I got was hooking up with guys in the dorms at NYU.

The pacing is a little off putting for me. Hotness other guy Beeks drove this ship, it spoke to him. Andrew Scott is a talent. I’m not sure anyone reading Highsmith saw him in her mind’s eye.

Another way to look at it though is that if Randle takes his extension, then Randle, Mikal, OG and Brunson between them make 93% of the cap – and if he doesn’t, it’s less than that. So from a cap management perspective if you think our big four lines up well with some of these big threes in talent terms, we’re in decent shape. If mikal and julius take the extensions we’ve got a below-apron team locked in for a few years and can keep using exceptions, aggregating salaries in trades and signing the better deadline release players while many of our rivals won’t be able to, and with places 5-8 on our roster already looking WAY better than a lot of teams.

Totally, get it, Donnie. His age knocked me out of the show a bit at first, too.

But I just really love Andrew Scott, and I think he pulls off something special in this show by the end. Maybe you saw and enjoyed his (completely different) performance in FLEABAG. Also wonderful work (IMO). Point: I think they wanted Scott no matter what and dialed in the rest from there.

PS — one of Sting’s kids — Eliot Sumner — is in it, too, with an interesting and totally diff approach to the role Philip Seymour Hoffman played in the Minghella adaptation.

PPS — Ken Lonergan has a pretty big role in it, too, as the dad. And he’s an American treasure (IMO) as writer — Manchester by the Sea, etc. — and all around mensch (IMO) even if he’s not the “best” actor. 😉

But obvs such trivia can’t be the main reason to enjoy …

I’m eager to watch this year draftees, it’ll be my “debut game” for all of them (the McCullar situation is really unfortunate).

    – They have a lot of faith in Kolek, so I have a lot faith in Kolek.
From what I read (here and around) there’s a big chance he’ll end up in my Personal Faves team roster* soon.
I-Hart’s former spot is currently available.

    – Dadier can score. I’ll spend the Summer League squinting my eyes to see every little glimpse of good defensive effort and passing ability, to stoke the flame of my hope.

    – Guards tend to dominate the ball in SL and non-superstars bigs often have trouble showing themselves in these games.
I hope the Incredible Huk would have his chances to shine.

    – Au contraire I’ve seen Rokas (too) many times and my expectations for him are definitively lower than for the other three guys, but I expect at least one alley-oop pass from him.
He’s usually not afraid trying risky passes and he’s always searching for a streaking or cherry picking teammate.
Passing is still his best skill (and thus that night he exploded for 40 points 🙂 ).

    * It used to be “Personal Scrubs team roster”, but that was before Jalen Brunson became a superstar…

Bojan’s TS% from 2 was .507, so who cares whether he was assisted or not on the few that he made? As to 3’s, I don’t really see much daylight between being assisted on 87% or 96%. On this team, their best role would be as nearly entirely catch and shoot players…creation attempts by Bojan are largely a detriment. The only questions between these two would be a) who is less of a massive detriment on D, and b) who could eat more regular season minutes in a strict catch-and-shoot strech-the-floor role without getting injured. Bertans had a hyperextended knee in February and achilles soreness in April. In fact, he just played, as Max pointed out:

At the recent Olympic Qualifying Tournament, in 94 total minutes, he got 8 total rebounds (at 6’10”), dished 2 assists with 5 turnovers, took 2 2FG, 25 3FG and 4 FTs.

It is noteworthy that he hit 10 of his 25 3pt attempts and , which is pretty much all I care about. Be Novakaine 2.0.

I forget: do we do game threads for summer league when we have actual prospects to watch?

Bojan’s TS% from 2 was .507, so who cares whether he was assisted or not on the few that he made?

since clippy has the day off, i am obligated
to point out that this is a misdemeanor in analytics land. the only time you would say “TS% from 2” as opposed to 2p fg% is if you were adding the ft effect on ts, since the overwhelming majority of free throws come on 2pt attempts. otherwise this framing would generally make 2pa look far less efficient than they are. bojan for example shot only 4 of his 149 fta on fouls during 3pa, so his “ts% from 2” last year would typically be given as ~57.1%

I was very confused by the “TS% from 2” thing because it doesn’t make any sense as an application of the stat

Pt of course, but you can do that for any player and league average 2pt% is .545 and league average FTr is .244. Bojan had a FTr of .219. So he’s shooting a shitty % and getting fouled less than average. I’d be happy for you to demonstrate how his foul shot adjusted 2pt TS% stacks up league-wide and if it is a net positive, or suggests that a team benefits from his shot creation on the whole, I’d be impressed! To me, it seems like he’d be better served to not shoot anything but 3’s.

TNFH, true but even so the point stands. Bojan’s creation ability at his age are a net detriment compared to the average player, or to either him or Bertans shooting assisted 3’s.

There were times in here that Bertans and Shamet were worshipped like Gods and now they’re treated like beggars and thieves ….

“The Incredible Huk” and Kolek execute the PNR, but Hukporti can’t get the floater (!!) to go.

Where are you guys getting the broadcast? ESPN2 still has tennis.

    methstreams.com lel

But I think it’s airing on regular ESPN

Pt of course, but you can do that for any player and league average 2pt% is .545 and league average FTr is .244. Bojan had a FTr of .219. this is as good a time as any to let you know that clippy’s raison d’etre is to feign helpfulness so as to inform you of how wrong you are about something you didn’t know you cared about. but subscribe to copilot and i will go into some detail on how detroit bojan of the last year and a half was in fact an efficient shot creator and generated “2pa TS” above average for players with his unassisted 2pa profile. he was a very different player than bertans in this regard. of course if he has since fallen rapidly into the great entropy vacuum that is coming for us all and our previously unassisted ways then all possible comparisons are on the table and here i would note that friend of program dougie mcbuckets is recently single. now off to vegas with you.

Huk looks like he has that lefty iHart push shot but is 0 for 3 with them so far.

It’s early to say this, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Huk ended up getting the Thibs “dunks and layups only” mandate. He has the floater form down but those 3 misses were kind of instinctively chucked up there

nice pass from dadiet followed up by a terrible shot from dadier on the next posession

Two obscene airballs and a nice pass for the french teen…

    Edit: two nice passes

The first floater drops for Huk!! Maybe more of a hook

    Nice two-man game with Dadiet

Dadiet with some real nice passing—Kolek looks as advertised as an orchestrator as well.

it’s fucking crazy max the only people watching summer league are degens who want to watch the game, not the interviews

lmao like why does charles lee have to get the entire left third of the screen

I have to have the NBA.com play-by-play on cuz they won’t shut up and I have no idea who is who.

Yeah dunno how high his ceiling is but Kolek is definitely an NBA caliber backup PG.

Brandon Miller sends Duane Washington to the shadow realm with an anklebreaker pull-up three

    Duane slid like five feet

    That was Nick Smith!

Huk’s play has been fairly solid—just like his frame!

Dadiet showing flashes of other stuff, which is great.

And Kolek looks cool as a cucumber out there.

Good vibes despite being down 9!

Yeah Huk looks like he could be a serviceable 3rd string C, certainly looks much more skilled than Sims at least if not the same caliber athlete.

dadiet’s motor looked nice and his release as well, but handle and processing seem a bit light

Huk’s D footwork, positioning during the first minutes wasn’t good.
Fluid on offense but not confident for high flying

Kolek is definitely cut from the same cloth as Brunson, only with less scoring chops but possibly better court vision. Will make his teammates better, which is what Legler was suggesting.

I like that Dadie is showing some passing ability, that was a negative in his scouting profile. He’s getting a couple of boards and stops as well. Still very kid-like, probably overwhelmed as indicated by the short-armed shots. Maybe the dunk will loosen him up.

Brandon Miller is probably on his way to being a max player so it’s a good wake-up call for the rookies to see how far they are from that level.

Skapintsev is a big lug, but he’s doing some decent stuff out there.

How did we look in the 4th? I got distracted by the former president maybe getting shot

Even in Summer League we don’t quit and the inbound play was better than everything we did last year in this kind of situations 😂

Alas Toppin couldn’t finish, he reminded me Courtney Lee in the Finals…

Daisuke (coach in Summer League) needs to do all the late in-bound plays. That was so good – Toppin misses the bunny

Brandon Miller can score no doubt, but doesn’t do much else. Not a great rebounder, mediocre to low playmaker skills as a creator for others, definitely a sleeve on defense. He’s pretty one dimensional now maybe he gets better but I’d pumped the brakes as far as a max player for him

Overall Dadiet thoughts? Obviously, he’s a long way away. But it sounded like he did decently at the non scoring parts of the game, which were supposed to be his big weakness.

Dadiet looked tentative, short-arming a few shots and looking lost for a while. He then made some nice passes and then received a pass for a dunk to break the ice. He was a mixed bag on D…made some decent defensive plays on Miller but also got burned badly a few times. Overall, he was just fine for a 18yo rookie going up against a more veteran SL squad.

Salaun looked like the better prospect, very long and athletic…but if Dadiet could knock down some open looks, that might change.

Kolek was very, very poised. Did pretty much everything you would expect in a solid but not spectacular debut.

Huk looked more raw than a skinned knee.

Knicks – plus 9 with Kolek on the court. With NBA level talent next to him he could avg 10 assists a game.

Dadiet was the youngest player in the draft – nothing I saw today was a surprise. He will spend the season in Westchester.

Watched it via cellphone trying to tell who’s who while also trying hard to stay awake ain’t helping for an accurate eye test but my general impression for this season’s draft picks was that Kolek is playable, Dadiet needs time and practice while Huk needs Thibs guidance and maybe more healing time.

Dadiet seemed pretty clueless on defense, a lot of floating around, but I guess that’s to be expected. Hopefully he’s coachable.

Only watched a bit but Kolek looked good and everyone else looked like SL players.

I thought Hukporti had a few nice plays.

Dadiet was exploited on defense. Needs a ton of work.

    Toppin is a good cutter.

Dadiet isn’t even 19 yet, so it’s not surprising he has a long way to go. Seems like an odd fit given our timeline but maybe they figure he is enough of a tabula rasa that he could be a future trade asset. Or maybe they just develop him for a few years in the hopes that he becomes a rotation player.

I watched the last three quarters on a small screen. Kolek looked good. He consistently found nice passes. I also thought Duane Washington Jr. looked good. I can see some team desperate for league minimum players picking him up (Lakers maybe). We had some good team defense moments. I thought Charlotte’s offense was a lot to handle with Miller and Company and we could never overcome the terrible start to the game. It was hard for me to evaluate the other players because it took quite a while for me to have an idea of who was who.

Summer League is so misleading. A guy like Duane Washington Jr. can look like a superstar and a future HOFer can look like a bum. I look mostly for confirmation or refutation of strengths and weaknesses, and mostly totally ignore scoring per se.

Watching Kolek in this game really makes me wish we had a bench big who is a good screener/roll man. Kolek can really cook in the pick and roll. Our bench unit is all small ball kind of guys though.

Thibs almost never subs in the whole bench at a time, so Kolek could do pick and rolls with starters, particularly Randle.
