Woj: Brunson Signs 4-year, $156.5 million extension

Another Woj bomb to love!

In a largely unprecedented financial concession to give roster flexibility to a contender, New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson has agreed on a four-year, $156.5 million extension, his agent Sam Rose of CAA tells ESPN — $113M less guaranteed than he’s eligible to receive in one year.

Hey, if you got players who are willing to give up millions to help you out, you don’t say no, ya know?

So, well, thanks, Jalen! That was very, very helpful! I doubt you make the money back later, but hey, maybe you will!

This is very, very nice news.

Wow, that’s amazing. I also think this is very good for the chemistry, to have the commitment of your leader beyond the purely financial decisions.

I am always in favor of a player getting as much money as he can if that’s what he wants. And it sounds like Brunson will be getting a mammoth contract at the end of this one. But in the meantime, he has done this team an incredible favor by taking this extension, which should help us avoid the second apron if we want to.

I wonder what, if any, impact this may have on the Julius extension issue. If Jalen had decided to wait for his max, on the heels of OG getting that huge deal, it would be all but impossible to convince Julius to give the team a discount. But if Jalen — a player we know Julius has enormous respect for — does it, then… ?

Just got out of my “Well Shit, Leon Has Ensured the Knicks Are Above the Second-Apron for the Foreseeable Future” tattoo appointment.

Any news?

Anyone remember when David Winfield became the highest-paid professional athlete at $1.4 mil in 1981? I thought he was the first to break a mil, but apparently Nolan Ryan made a mil flat the year before.

Anyone cares (I suspect not), Jalen would be making about $11.5 mil a year in 1981, based on inflation.

No judgement here, just playing with numbers. I’m very grateful that Jalen just did what he did. May he live long and prosper.

I wonder if he hedged this with an insurance policy or something….i mean that is a shit load of money to put at risk…what a guy…

By the way, the idea that Jalen is setting himself up for a bigger pay day down the line assumes that the Knicks would be willing to offer him a 5 year supermax in 2028 when he is 32 years old.

That is no fait accompli, so this should not be painted as “actually Brunson’s gonna get paid more in the long run doing it this way”. He might. But it’s not probable.

This is actually one of the greatest financial sacrifices we’ve ever seen a player make for a team. Holy shit.

Great news. Leon would still have to be President to hand out that max. Hopefully we’re winning championships so it’s not an issue.

This should be added to the Bridges deal, does Brunson take this without Mikal coming and the Knicks giving out 4 unprotected picks..

I’d like to add Tim Duncan and Dirk Nowitzki to the mix of people who “sacrificed” money to live the life they liked more.

He left a lot of money on the table (maybe for now, we don’t know), but maybe he considered that 155M (and over 250M in his career) are enough when you play with your friends, in the greatest city of the world, in front of the best fans in the USA that worship you as a hero.

And I don’t think his kids (or his nephews) will ever have money problems despite the discount…

He’s going to be remembered as a legend and he’ll never has to pay for a drink or a dinner in the tri-state area.

Brunson’s study of championship organizations and franchise stars — Patrick Mahomes’ Kansas City Chiefs, the Tom Brady New England Patriotsand the Derek Jeter New York Yankees — gave him a blueprint for MVP-level players who structured contracts to give their teams the best chances at sustainable title runs

The sneaky great thing about Tom Brady was that his wife was making $50M/year the whole time.

(Anyone remember his uncle Alec—RIP—who played for the Heat in the early ’90s?)

Doogie, this basketball related answer is for you 😉

I remember Alec Kessler, a star in college, a Miami lottery pick and he ended his career with a 3 games cameo for Olimpia Milano (but I wasn’t living under the Duomo that year 🙂 ).

He died too young, while playing a pickup game. RIP.

I was at a party in one of Giselle’s apartments once and I tried to leave a note for Tom under their pillows but I could not find a pen anywhere

Getting Mikal to the team, even if it was an overpay in a vacuum, surely helped his decision-making here, which makes me feel better about the asset-aspects of that trade (there was nothing else not to like).

This is actually one of the greatest financial sacrifices we’ve ever seen a player make for a team.

I hope his dad at least gets a hefty raise.

With Jalen Brunson’s record-setting bargain extension complete, the strong expectation is Mikal Bridges will also take a discount on his upcoming new long-term deal with the Knicks.

The Villanova duo will be setting up New York to be championship contenders for years to come.

I am not used to good things happening to the Knicks.

Mikal will be eligible for a 4/156m extension next summer.

Hubert, let’s just pretend you agreed to the bet. We can work out compensation later. Cool?

The idea of taking a cut in many tens of millions of dollars per year vs. a higher number of tens of millions is sort of inconceivable for me, a former schoolteacher.

Sort of like trying understand the concept of infinity. Or non existence.

But, yes, gotta love JB! These next few years should be fun!

The Melo Mega Max was 5 years, $129 million in 2014.

I actually did accept the bet on the previous thread (I edited it to “lol”), we just never had terms.

I would have asked you to write a book about Buffy if I won 🙂

Looking at IHarts move now it will be an interesting case study. What if OKC flames out? What if Phil Jackson had taken more money from Portland or somewhere?. How much more did he end up making by staying relevant?

This is actually one of the greatest financial sacrifices we’ve ever seen a player make for a team. Holy shit.

To be clear, this is not “one of the greatest financial sacrifices we’ve ever seen a player make”. This is THE GREATEST financial sacrifice, by a large margin.

Dunc took $11/yr less. Durant took $10/yr less. Lebron $2.6 less. Jalen took $25-33MM/YR LESS (depends how you calc it). Absolutely insane. Jalen legend. Jalen for President. In Brunson we trust. Amen.

The sneaky great thing about Tom Brady was that his wife was making $50M/year the whole time.

And the sneaky not-great thing about Hartenstein

I actually did accept the bet on the previous thread (I edited it to “lol”), we just never had terms.

I guess the only real question surrounding the agreement is how much money Shake Milton is going to get out of it.

Your math seems off.

It’s 4/156 vs 5/269.

The second deal would have been around 4/212 for the first 4 years, so it’s around $14M/year.

So if Hubert’s numbers are correct, then he’s taking about 72% of what he could have gotten?

The personally amusing thing is that this is almost exactly the percent cut I took to take on this new job in my very first non-toxic work environment ever, which is completely 100% worth it.

The not so personally amusing thing is Jalen’s making roughly 350 times what I make.

But I’m enormously happy, and I can still buy good 12-year-old single malt whenever I want.

May Jalen say the same…

if he retires at the end of this extension jalen will have made like 250 million playing basketball

It’s pretty cool that Brunson is pretty much about winning. His publicist is gonna have a good weekend.

So if Hubert’s numbers are correct, then he’s taking about 72% of what he could have gotten?

Just through the first 4 years.

He also gave up a guaranteed 5th year at approximately $60M.

Maybe at age 32 he can earn that but it’s quite a risk.

The personally amusing thing is that this is almost exactly the percent cut I took to take on this new job in my very first non-toxic work environment ever, which is completely 100% worth it.

really, the first non-toxic environment…dang, that’s not great, especially considering the amount of time most of us spend at work…

is it just a normal part of the industry you’re in?

is it that you’ve mostly worked for “small” organizations?

The funny thing here is we actually don’t gain as much as you would think for his sacrifice.

Let’s say this keeps us out of the second apron. The biggest benefits are that we’ll be able to trade our 2033 draft pick (in two years), continue using the TPMLE (which we haven’t even used yet), and aggregate salaries in trades.

I hate to go too far off-brand here but those… sound like pretty significant benefits.

Specifically, not being able to aggregate salaries in trades would move completing our team from hard to virtually impossible, and now we have one more pick to trade in our window.

Yeah, you’re right. I was too narrowly focused on the next two years.

This will be huge in 2026-27 and 2027-28. And of course if it impacts Randle, Bridges, and anyone else.

It’s awesome that you have that, Raven. I imagine Brunson, Mikal, Josh and Donte are like the happiest fucking guys and their teammates are likely never gonna have a shot to be part of that in their careers again. They know it too.

Knicks in same group as Philly for the in season tournament. Also Orlando, BK and Charlotte.

You are right, per ESPN cap savings are:
25/26 ($11.5)
26/27 ($12.4)
27/28 ($13.3)
Total ($37.2) = $12.4mm/yr aav savings. Still unprecedented

Confusion is that he could have signed for $113 more guaranteed next year, but that includes an extra year.

Question for cap nerds: doesn’t this help w Randle/Mikal extensions by giving us more room under the second apron?

hate to ruin everyone’s mood but

@FredKatz
Kevin McCullar is not joining the Knicks at summer league, per a league source. McCullar dealing with injury rehab and will stay in NY. Discussed this on today’s episode of Katz and Shoot with
@Sam_Vecenie
as well.

Yeah, the history of teams remembering to take care of the guy on the other side isn’t great, so this is still a very big financial risk by Brunson.

But again, I am very happy that he’s taking it!

Sheppard should have been the #1 pick. Or at least I probably would have taken him. I guess you could make arguments for a few guys

Reed Sheppard was taken with the Nets pick from the Harden trade..

Tatum
Brown

Reed next?

JB will be living the dream. He’s in New York City, with access to the finest restaurants, shows, and entertainment in the world — and he will be physically unable to take out his wallet for at least a decade, more if we make it to the finals.

Yankees with their most encouraging win in like 2 months, fake stupid baseball brawl in the 9th adding excitement for rest of the weekend in Baltimore.

dude calling the timeout to clean up some blood on Risacher “infection control” is something

It’s sad how far Johnny Davis’s star has fallen, remember when he was doing Taco Bell commercials? Dude looks totally lost out there.

Incredible news, I didn’t think I could love Brunson more and he proves me wrong.

He’s such a huge part of why I’ve fallen back in love with the Knicks after so many dreadful years and he keeps reaffirming how much he’s a guy I just want to root for.

Risacher will have a long and succesful career, he just was never meant to be a 1st overall type of guy and I hope people keep that in mind when criticizing him. I do think Sarr has some real high end potential, but oh boy he is incredibly raw.

It’s just so hard to know, there really weren’t any sure-fire stars in this draft. Some guys will develop, some won’t. Sheppard’s offensive skillset looks for real, but he’s smallish so it will probably take considerable time for him to adapt.

According to the box score, Atlanta started four forwards and a power forward (Risacher). What he H**l?

@ShamsCharania
Denver Nuggets No. 22 overall pick DaRon Holmes II has suffered a torn right Achilles tendon, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium. He’s expected to miss the 2024-25 season. Devastating blow for one of the Nuggets’ promising young pieces.

This is brutal.

The man is an absolute legend. Holy shit.

It’s almost like there’s no meaningful difference between having 250 million dollars and having 350 million dollars. Either way it is generational wealth – total security and freedom for yourself and all of your closest loved ones.

Good for JB. Can’t wait for next year!
