Boston’s damn good. I’d really love to see how we match up with them at full-ish health, though. (i.e., Julius and OG are back, even if Mitch isn’t)
Unless Randle and OG are back on the court for a month prior to the start of the playoffs (around March 15) there’s no way this team is making any kind of deep run. That’s my opinion.
I agree. We’re going to need at least 10 games with our full team for the guys to get reacclimatized and also shake off rust. I’m preparing myself for the inevitable first or second round exit. I think hobbled with a healthy Brunson we could still win a round depending on who it is but I don’t see us beating Boston, Cleveland, Orlando, Indiana or even Miami if we don’t have OG and Randle back and they’re not close to 100 percent.
Boston’s really good, but I think we matchup well with them at full health. They win a best of 7 against us most likely, but they are gonna need all 7. They are just a different and almost unguardable team with a healthy Porzingis. On the flipside, with Randle, Hartenstein, and Anunoby healthy and playing together- they don’t have an answer for us either. They made Brunson work for it, but he still got 34. Another day at the office. Imagine that matchup with Randle and spacing. With our depth we should be able to put quite the scare into Boston. And if we play our A game, I’m not entirely sure we don’t win a series against them.
Tommy Beer quoting Woj:
——
Speaking on NBA Countdown prior to the Celtics-Knicks game, Woj said he’s been told that Anunoby is “right on schedule” and that there “have not been any setbacks” since OG had a loose particle removed from his elbow on February 8th.
Wojnarowski added that the Knicks medical staff will “re-evaluate [OG] at the end of next week, and then the hope is he starts to get back on the court then.”
In oakaak news, Grimes played a lot of minutes (26) despite a poor box score (2-8), which suggests an appreciation of defensive intensity among the kids in the sandbox. Evan has some good minutes (18, 5-7 for 13 points), while Evil Donte has 8 pts and 3 assts in 15 minutes.
As for actual, current Knicks, the only thing I can say is more Deuce, less Burks, at least for yesterday. Alec only had one turnover on the sheet, but it felt like he a bunch more. I guess if clanged threes are turnovers, he had six of those…
Otherwise, on to the oakaak game Monday.
Burks was fascinating in that every time he shot it, I was thinking, “What are you doing, you fool!!!” but then I thought, “Well, I guess that’s why he’s here, for instant offense off of the bench.” But yeah, it sure was not pretty.
I was surprised when everyone wanted Burks back. I was relieved when we traded him away. He can be a useful player but he has always been a mess inside the arc. I hated PG Burks the first time round and now he is two years older and even less capable of creating at the rim.
He is going to have big games sometimes and go 5-7 from 3 but he is always going to be frustrating and is always going to hijack the offense and put up total trash shots even when he is hot.
I think not having a true PG in the 2nd unit is going to hurt both Burks and Bojan. Instead of getting good looks, they are going to have to create for themselves more and wind up taking more tough shots.
I like the way Deuce is playing, but right now he’s not a PG and neither is Burks. We did not fully solve the fundamental problems in the 2nd unit with that trade. When fully healthy, we may have to have Randle or Brunson on the court with the 2nd unit to get some extra playmaking.
These short-handed games are getting tiresome.
We should probably put Bojan in the starting lineup. Not sure how you can expect to beat a good team with three non shooters starting.
The first time Burks was here he was fighting for minutes with players like Fournier, Walker, Payton, Rivers, Rose, Ntilikina, Knox, Reddish, and Bullock. No wonder people have fond memories of him. A lot of players would look pretty darn good when compared to that group. Other than Reddish, not one of those players is still in an NBA rotation on a competitive team and many of them aren’t even currently in the NBA.
And even then most of us weren’t clamoring for more Burks, we wanted more IQ and more Grimes.
Watching Burks part 2 in the cold light of day, on an actual good team, with real NBA players around him is a much more sobering experience.
Interesting fact I just read on Twitter, last night Tatum played 43 mins which apparently was a career high for him in a non-OT game. The Knicks bench also played more mins than Boston’s bench, the Celtics didn’t mess around last night.
Boston is on a mission this season, still remains to be seen if they’ll be fully healthy come playoff time and that recent playoff failures won’t come back to haunt them again.
I don’t think people were clamoring for Burks, per se, just a cheap bench piece who could score a bit. Bojan was the real prize, and as we’ve seen, Bojan is a legit scoring threat still. He’s a guy that the other team is always thinking about when he’s out there.
Burks is fine, he’s an okay NBA player who can really shoot who had a bad shooting night. He’s a replacement for Evan Fournier, who we weren’t going to play at all. The problem isn’t Burks, it’s that OG, Randle and Mitch are hurt.
I do agree that the Celtics were treating last night as a statement game, and I guess being on national television, that makes some sense, but really, beating up a shorthanded Knicks team isn’t all that impressive.
I think Burks can be useful for us but I think you bring up a good point. When he was here before we had much less offensive firepower. Even without Randle and OG we’ve got Brunson and DDV who are light years better than most of the offensive players we had when Burks was here last. He pretty much had to provide that instant offense for himself but now he needs to do less and integrate himself into the team more.
But he’s not a point guard. If he’s not looking for his shot, there’s no real reason to play him.
Like if Burks is 3-7 from 3 instead of 1-7 he has played a fine game for a bench player. Our bench doesn’t have anyone who can create shots for other guys still, but Bojan and Burks can score themselves, which is more than we had a couple weeks ago.
That’s the essence of it
It’s hard to evaluate Burks and Bojan from this Game. Boston defended fiercely when we were trying to score in the third quarter and come back in the fourth quarter. Boston was not doubling much and didn’t leave people open. That is a very hard environment for Burks and Bojan to score well.
Knicks struggling a bit right now but at least Juan Soto is a New York Yankee.
Trae Young finger surgery? Hawks about to fuel up the tank
It’s not that complicated. We still need a PG in the 2nd unit or Burks and Bojan will have to create more for themselves. They aren’t going to be as efficient creating for themselves. We want both of them shooting quality 3s off kick outs that came from penetration or a double team, but we don’t have that without a legit PG or Randle/Brunson playing with that unit. It will be interesting to see what Thibs when Randle comes back. The only other way around it is excellent ball movement, but that kind of comes and goes with this team.
If we were at least getting them a lot of quality shots, we could at live with them getting targeted on defense.
One of either Trae or Murray is very likely to get traded in the off season. Both are guards that are better with the ball in their hands, but there’s only one ball.
I doubt Burks got significantly worse between his last game in Detroit and now. There’s a lot of shooting variance that should even out.
He can’t do as much with the ball in his hand this time around but it’d be surprising if he can’t hit 40% from 3 on high volume.
man Jokic just destroyed Draymond tonight. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen him so helpless
