New York vs Miami W 100-98 Record 9-6 (2-1 Silver Cup)

A 21-points comeback win against an heated foe? Gimme more of this please!
Great win (from an emotional standpoint), I’m very happy.

Now we’re only another Hornets-obliteration away from a wildcard spot in the Silver Cup and the chance to play for the rights to go to Vegas for a nice week of gambling and strippers.

Next: An earlier than usual sunday start (6:00 PM) against the riddle named Phoenix Suns. For an honest evaluation of our team it would be better if KD plays, for the good of our record I hope he sits out.

    THOUGHTS:

    – So we basically needed an angry fan telling them to show some balls to flip the game… Fair, this is the definition of “home court advantage”, never let your heroes embarrass themselves… 🙂

    – I hate the Heat (save for Spo) and as I wrote above I’m very happy today.
At the same time I hope our team (as in “the Coaches and the Players”) keep their heads cool enough to learn the right lessons even from a fantastic win, because this team has issues and we need to work on them.
We (as in “we Knicks fans”) are exempted from objectivity, so I’m ready for the inevitable “we are contenders” takes after a game like this, no matter how many players the Heat were missing nor how bad the 3rd quarter was… 😀

    – Talking about issues, the Heat cut our usual lifelines (19 turnovers, only 6 OReb) and it was ugly. We really need some energy (and pace) boost in the starting lineup…

    – The Bench Mob + RJ lineup (aka Gnomeball) turned this game 180° with spirited defense, unrelentless energy and good ball movement. This group is a joy to watch more often than not.

    – Our 2:07 12-0 run in the 4th (JB 7 points, RJ 5) to me it’s the best stretch of the year so far… for the starters!

    PLAY(S) OF THE GAME:

4th 2:05 Jimmy Butler misses 12-foot two point shot MIA 96 NY 94
4th 2:03 RJ Barrett defensive rebound
4th 1:59 RJ Barrett makes two point shot MIA 96 NY 96
4th 1:59 Bam Adebayo shooting foul
    4th 1:59 RJ Barrett makes free throw 1 of 1 MIA 96 NY 97

Just when it looked like “The Migraines” have kidnapped good-RJ, he came back with a vengeance, played all the 4th quarter and gave us the much sought lead with this and-1 (after a not-for-kids Jimmy’s brick) capped by the roof-raiser berserker’s stare to the crowd.
    Great moment!

    STATS OF THE GAME:

19-0. Heat’s run to start the 3rd. My memory’s fading with age but I have troubles trying to remember something so bad. The starting lineup looked like a gang of zombies for 5 loooooong minutes…

39.1% Heat’s FG% (27% 3FG). Good defense or just playing Highsmith, Jaquez and Swider instead of Herro and Robinson? Can I say a little of both?

    GRADES:

    Brunson A-
The Little General had an excellent game and lead the final charge. He was the steadier starter all game long, with just a couple of little quirks (hence the “-“): he missed 2 meaningful FTs down the stretch, and the last one could’ve cost us the game, and his AST:TO ratio was low (3:2).

    Randle D
After an up and down 1st half (11 points, 4 Reb, 5 Ast, 6 TOs) he disappeared in the 2nd. Luckily JB forbade him to touch the ball down the stretch. I won’t talk about his defense, I don’t talk about unexisting things. 😀
    I’ve a lot to write about Julius, but it’s only game-15 so… 😉

    Barrett A-
Grade takes a boost because for the n-th time he showed his lack of fear when the game matter. 7 boards and good defense on Butler.

    Robinson D
The last two games, against two top centers, have been bad.

    Grimes D
8 2nd half minutes, -19. He needs to step up big time or he’ll become the Elfrid Payton of wings.

    Quickley A
Good in the 1st half, fantastic in the 2nd, when his no-fear treys fueled our comeback. Money’s coming kid.

    Hart A-
Step by step his coming back, very solid performance (10 PTS, 8 REB, 4 AST).

    Hartenstein A-
Game like this are the reason why it’s nice to have the best backup center in the league.

    Donte DiVincenzo B+
He jumps the passing lanes like an hungry wolf. Not much offense today but a solid showing.

    Thibs D
In the 3rd quarter he waited 7:22 to make his first lineup change (J-Hart for RJ) and 8:03 to insert IQ for Ghost Grimes. First he was saved by the Bench Mob and later he was saved again when JB freeze-out Randle in the last 3:50.
He badly need to solve the 3rd quarter issue, what in hell are those guys drinking at halftime, laudanum?

That was maybe the first game all season that Brunson looked like himself He was cooking Miami in the midrange.

If you look at his shooting stats, he’s been a big part of the poor 2p%. His usually stellar midrange game has been sub-.400.

He badly needs to solve the 3rd quarter issue, what in hell are those guys drinking at halftime, laudanum?

I think last night made the 3Q issue clear as day: it’s a combination of the terrible 5-man lineup we’re using and baseball’s “third time through the lineup” effect.

Re the latter, by the time you’ve had two turns at the same lineup and a halftime to talk about it, it’s got to be pretty easy to know how to attack it.

I don’t get the “too much USG” argument for keeping IQ on the bench at all. It makes no sense and that 12-0 run we went on when IQ, RJ, and Brunson finally joined forces shows why.

Mitch is a non usage player, and Randle & RJ have traditionally been too much usage players. IQ’s usage is the perfect antidote. (You like how we froze out Randle last night? You can do that with IQ; try it with Grimes and you’re playing 2 v 5).

For sure, there will be big teams that will punish us. But that’s a fundamental flaw of this team, and there’s not that many teams that can capitalize.

from a mental standpoint that could be a huge win for us, coming back so big like that against the team that beat us in the playoffs especially for IQ who did not have a good playoffs at all.

I do think thibs needs to consider either starting DDV or maybe starting DDV in the second half. The platonic ideal of grimes might be better but DDV in practice is just as good of a defender and shooter but has so much more energy and confidence that he can contribute in games even when his shooting is off. And there’s the nova synergy with Brunson too.

The third quarter needs to be figured out. So maybe start Grimes but then start DDV in the second half to give a different look to opposing teams.

I’d try switching DDV and grimes before starting IQ. I do think there is an argument to be made for IQ’s scoring punch coming off the bench as long as he’s playing starter’s minutes and closing out games.

i thought last night was a good portent for the rest of the season…. the offense looked terrible and probably will look a lot like that going forward and we’re going to need our defense to step up or the other team to just go ice cold all of a sudden….

there’s really not much we can change… randle is who he is at this point… he’s going to be inconsistent all year long and it’s nice to goto RJ and IQ once that happens… but they’re also inconsistent also… so it’s mostly going to be the brunson show for the year and whoever else shows up…

it’s going to look a lot like 2021 or 2022 depending on how good our defense is….

Thanks Max. I agree with all of your grades except the D for Thibs. While it is fair to argue that he went with the starters a bit too long in the third, his team came back from a 21-pt deficit against one of the great coaches in NBA history. The also overcame a backbreaking 3 with 3:50 remaining. As some folks pointed out, the coach is responsible for keeping players’ heads in the game and believing they can win even when down over 20 points late in the third quarter against one of the best teams in the league. Thanks to that belief, and to the decision to keep IQ and iHart on the floor for the rest of the game, they held the Heat to 11 points in the 4th quarter and finished the game by outscoring them 38-15 in the last 15:40. Most fair observers would conclude that Thibs out-coached Spo in this game. My grade for Thibs would be a B+.

To borrow from CP of KFTV…

    CARDIAC KNICKS

    Sheesh!
Fitting though- that it was against our archrival and the game ended with RJ stopping Himmy Butler. That’s encouraging, but PLEASE don’t let it come down to it again lol. FIGURE THE 3RD QUARTER OUT

I do think there is an argument to be made for IQ’s scoring punch coming off the bench as long as he’s playing starter’s minutes and closing out games.

Maybe but he hasn’t been playing starters minutes (he’s averaging less than 25 mpg). And he has not been closing out games, either.

The combination of Brunson, IQ, RJ, Randle (i.e. our four best players) has played fourteen minutes this season! Six of them were last night.

This is not the manu role. It’s not even the derrick rose role. This is the greg anthony role.

I’m sure Thibs will get it eventually, but I’m curious to see how long it will take him. Last year he figured out the best lineup in December. In 2021 he stuck with it til the bitter end. I fear this is more of a 2021 situation with Grimes being Elf, but we shall see.

“I’d try switching DDV and grimes before starting IQ. I do think there is an argument to be made for IQ’s scoring punch coming off the bench as long as he’s playing starter’s minutes and closing out games.”

I agree that if a move is to be made, this is the one. IQ is the backup PG on this team. He needs to come in fresh when Brunson takes his first rest. Luckily, Thibs (you know, the winning coach last night) isn’t going to knee-jerk reaction his way into making such a foolish decision without going to a more sensible Plan B first, which would be to shorten the leash on Grimes via more DDV.

Thanks, Max. I really expected Jimmy to beat us at the end and send us into a long day of moaning. Happy that last shot went our way.

And I really hope Brunson’s shoulder is okay. Looked like he was in a lot of pain and adrenaline pushed him through it.

“And I really hope Brunson’s shoulder is okay. Looked like he was in a lot of pain and adrenaline pushed him through it.”

From where he was grabbing, it seemed like more of a muscular thing…but I guess we’ll see. He played great after that, so that’s promising!

Even though he returned, Jimmy’s ankle looked to be more serious than a tweak, I wouldn’t be surprised if he missed tonight’s game to give him three days off before they play the Bucks, but it’s Jimmy Butler so he might just play through it.

Regardless of whether Thibs chooses to start IQ and also play him with the 2nd unit similar to what he’s doing with RJ now, tries starting DDV or gives Grimes more time, it looks like the longer term solution is an upgrade for Grimes.

Grimes is a good 3&D player but I think the combination of Grimes and Mitch puts a little too much pressure on Brunson, RJ, and Randle. He doesn’t create anything. We need someone that is at least capable of creating if one of those guys has a bad matchup or they are doubling.

I’m sure Thibs will get it eventually, but I’m curious to see how long it will take him. Last year he figured out the best lineup in December. In 2021 he stuck with it til the bitter end.

Crap, it just occurred to me that the instances where Thibs makes swift decisions and takes action early are all when a player can’t play defense (Kemba, Evan). When the problem was offense (Elf), he didn’t take action. We might be in trouble with this one.

    i dvr’ed it…watched when i got home last night-

    1. robinson has looked terrible against superior talent…hopefully this motivates him…it was like the game plan was…give it to Bam in the first two minutes and foul this shmuck out…and he bit on it…he has been good on the fouls lately but seemed like he was caught up in the moment last night and his foul shooting is an eyesore…
    2. speaking of eyesore’s …randle’s …i think it was 6 to’s in the first half were embarrassing…i know he puts up numbers but his game is so hard to watch…just feels like a square peg in a round hole guy in the offense
    3. as said above…it is clear that it is brunson’s team and we go as far as that dude…hopefully his body holds up over the 82 games…
    4. the grime’s sheen is wearing off…i guess he’s in there for defense…but his offense is so poor…can’t imagine that nets to a positive
    5. IQ needs big minutes…anything less is coaching malpractice
6.rj continues to be an ingame enigma…some things never change…

charlotte is playing better with the woman beater back in the lineup…won’t be so easy…

I’m finding myself agreeing with Strat about pretty much everything these days.

    😂😂😂

We are all constantly learning, even old guys like me that have been watching the game for over 50 years. I definitely know more now than 4-5 years ago. I’m sure you do too.

” …it sure looks like the longer term solution is an upgrade for Grimes.”

For the first 20 games last year, IQ was almost unplayable. He was shooting around 40% from the field, 30% from 3, and averaging around 9 points a game. For some reason Thibs stuck with him and lo and behold he figured it out and improved. Of course, some would argue that the lineup changes freed him up, but he wasn’t all that good in December either (.545 TS%). He didn’t really hit his groove until January. Yet pretty much everyone here (but not everyone!) gave him a looooong leash.

This team needs Grimes to play like he did last year, when he posted a .619 TS% on 14.4% usage and had a lower 3PAr and higher FTr. My problem with him right now is less that he’s not taking enough shots and more that he’s missing the shots he does take…hes 1-9 from three during his last 2 games.

Last night, Grimes did not see a second of playing time after he was removed in the 3rd quarter. Neither did Mitch (ignoring a FT rebounding situation). Players know when they are not being trusted to finish games. Grimes needs to get the message and pick it up. I have confidence that he will.

I also think a little too much is being made about the 3rd quarter thing. It’s a pretty small sample, and there’s been inconsistency more than a pattern.

What was kind of shocking to me was the Heat’s total collapse in the 4th quarter. Terrible turnovers, rushed shots, leaving shooters wide open – I can’t even imagine what this board would look like this morning if we had capitulated like that.

and his foul shooting is an eyesore…

He has gotten worse every year. I can’t understand that. It’s one thing to have a lucky year and then decline, but to get worse every year despite working on it and to be utterly incapable of putting arc on the ball is ridiculous. Virtually every kid can be taught to arc the ball a little more. Maybe he won’t make them anyway, but what he’s doing now is ridiculous. It almost has to be some kind of mental block because how could they not be explaining this and working on it with him.

it was like the game plan was…give it to Bam in the first two minutes and foul this shmuck out…and he bit on it…

Yeah, I’m hoping this was just a bad-Mitch-game and not a chronic weakness for opponents to exploit.

Like others have said, thank the gods — errrr Leon? 😉 — for iHart.

mitch’s body language when he gets to the free throw line tells you its not going in…i hope it doesn’t get to chris dudley levels…but he is going in the wrong direction..

Tom Thibodeau is starting a 2 guard who has shot literally one free throw in 13 games. How is that even possible?

Thanks for the recap, Max. Once again i needed it… 😴

    Nah, Pags. Knicks will win.

So i fell asleep, but my prediction didn’t! 😛

Z-Man, I think you’re right, I’ve been too harsh with my Thibs’ grade, but I still can’t go over a “C”.

At the same time I don’t think he outcoached Spo, for many reasons including some you pointed out (Jimmy’s ankle injury, Bam’s banged up, Lowry run out of gas, Herro and Robinson were out).

I think Spo was coaching with one arm tied behind his back, Thibs’ “lateness” in the 3rd was saved by players’ pride and Brunson’s choice of denying the ball to Randle in the clutch.

To me if you switch coaches the Knicks would have won this game by 10, without the need to mount a furious (and iper-exciting) comeback or survive the potential game winning shot.

But it’s just my opinion and I liked the happy ending 🙂

This team needs Grimes to play like he did last year, when he posted a .619 TS% on 14.4% usage and had a lower 3PAr and higher FTr. My problem with him right now is less that he’s not taking enough shots and more that he’s missing the shots he does take…hes 1-9 from three during his last 2 games.

    For me it’s the opposite.

He hurt his hand, probably missed some practice time and was a little off the last two games. I can live with that. If it continues then we have a problem. But I think (hope) he’ll be fine.

What we can’t live with is him becoming a zero if they take away the 3. That would be OK if Bam was our C, but we can’t have 2 zeros on the court if Mitch and Grimes are both giving us nothing.

I think part of the problem is that his handle is weak. He’s afraid to put the ball on the floor. How can you create anything or draw fouls if the only thing you do is either immediately shoot a 3 or immediately pass the ball.

Awesome A+ cap by Max, with even more extra credit for the perfect use of “laudanum.”

What was kind of shocking to me was the Heat’s total collapse in the 4th quarter.

As you duly noted last night, d-mar, jacquez jr ended up w a terrible line after i kicked off the fellatio. That was a big reason for the collapse.

Perhaps I finally learned how to pull an Owen after all these years

The more I think about it..
Grimes is a player I don’t want to lose, but given the way RJ has been playing, I’m ok with the idea of moving Grimes, Fournier, and a couple of 1sts for OG. Sucks that we’d have to pay him and Quickley, but I think that would be a good move. Those firsts cannot be our own though.

Perry has a lot of opinions all of a sudden… maybe good ones?:

Scott Perry wants to see New York get a player that can “create offense off the dribble” as well as provide “size and defensive versatility.” He said such a move would allow for RJ Barrett to be the team’s starting shooting guard, where “he’d be big every night against opponents.”

ISM hit J Jaq J a bit last night, as did extended minutes, but he’s still an excellent, versatile young player. There’s no need for retraction of any of the in-game encomiums posted his way.

He collapsed a bit in the 4th, maybe for the extended minutes (he played more than RJ, JB and Bam!), but I really love his passing skills and he’s not afraid, he took his shots without esitation and attacked the rim with no fear at all.

I’ve been too harsh with my Thibs’ grade

This was one of the worst games I have ever seen Thibs coach. He made zero adjustments during a 19-0 run and it took him 42 minutes to play his best players together. Your grade of D was frankly magnanimous.

Your grade of D was frankly magnanimous.

It actually is really weird that IQ would have played only 26 minutes last night. Thibs is playing him less than 25 minutes a game on the season. He’s never really fully bought into IQ.

Yeah I don’t care all that much if IQ starts or not but he needs to play more.

Nice of Julius to not turn it over in the second half but just miss all his shots instead

When I first saw models of tournament court- I hated it. It was wayyyyy too orangey. But..it didn’t look so bad watching the game. It wasn’t super orangey like I thought it would be. I’m still not a fan of the logo and those jerseys though. How do yal feel about the court?

Awesome A+ cap by Max, with even more extra credit for the perfect use of “laudanum.”

Seconded. A slight against-the-grain thought on Grimes. I was excited early in the game as it felt like he was putting it on the floor and driving more, but the Heat were cutting off any chance for him with excellent switches. I’d like to see him try that against a team that is not that disciplined. We might see a more exciting Grimes then. Or not…

Also, Miami game plans against teams every night like it’s the NBA finals. Pepper, I think you’re spot on that Bam was given orders to get Mitch in foul trouble, and Bam’s so good and athletic it worked. Once it did, Mitch was a non-factor.

And clearly the game plan is to harass Brunson in the back court to take seconds off the clock, because the Knicks are just the worst with only seconds left in the 24. Bad decision-making, bad passes, on and on. And clearly point three was stay in front of your man and double often. Keep Brunson and Julius (and RJ) out of the paint (see 24 second clock). Which is why Grimes also went nowhere. Again, I’ve seen other teams understand that, but the Heat are so damn disciplined they actually do it effectively.

“It’s a decision to mentally check out or not,” Quickley would say later. “It’s a decision to keep fighting. It’s a decision to tell yourself, ‘You got to keep fighting,’ no matter what.

“I did look at the score and say, ‘Dang,’ when I seen how much we was down, I literally said that. But then I got right back to it, seeing where I was at mentally and said, ‘Let’s go. Let’s try to get a comeback going.'”

    gotta love this dude…

Trying to figure out this IST now… it seems like if we beat Charlotte at home and the Heat beat the Bucks at home, it would be a three way tie with all three teams having a 1-1 record and the winner of the group would come down to PD.

If we don’t win the group, I have no idea what happens. Is it just the two best 2nd place teams that make the QF? Or is there some sort of wild card play in?

If Grimes is playing like the Danny Green Starter Kit we mostly saw last year, there’s at least an argument for keeping him in the starting lineup even though IQ is clearly the better player. There’s just not a lot of offensive juice left for the bench if we start IQ. DDV/Grimes/Hart/iHart/staggered starter is probably a woeful offensive group.

Right now though, Grimes is next to useless and Quickley has been great. So anything that transfers minutes from Grimes to IQ is likely a net benefit even if it’s less than ideal.

That said, I don’t think it’s insane to let Grimes try to play through it without an official demotion. I don’t think it’s a best asset management practice to hastily glue young players who have shown some promise to the bench.

But if we have to eat into his minutes to get IQ 30+ a night, I’m all for it.

Also, this is obviously a longer, complicated conversation than I can get into in one post, but at what point do we tell Randle he’s just gotta rein it in? Like, be a PNR partner, take open threes, and not much else.

I genuinely like Randle, and he’s fun to watch when he has it going. But we’re trying to make some noise this season and that’s going to be hard to do if we have the single least efficient 25%+ USG player in the sport.

To be sure, our ceiling is lower if we fold on Randle being an all-NBA guy, and I think he’s earned some time to get it together. But we’re all too aware the guy is capable of season-long slumps, and if we conclude this is another one it seems kinda insane to just sit back and watch it happen given that almost everything else is going more or less well.

If we don’t win the group, I have no idea what happens. Is it just the two best 2nd place teams that make the QF? Or is there some sort of wild card play in?

One wild card per conference, ostensibly based on record but will almost certainly come down to point differential. If the tournament ended today, the Knicks would be the East wild card based on PD. If they win and run up the score on the Hornets on Monday, they’re almost certainly in.

Roster might need a tweak or two so everybody can play the right role. We still have one too many low-usage guys which makes for some brutal offensive lineups if you are forced to play too many of them together.

We have nine rotation players with McBride as the 10th man. 5 of those 10 are not guys who are amenable to shooting the ball: Grimes, Hart, McBride, and the two centers. There are too many combinations of that where we are playing 3-on-5 or 2-on-5.

    DJ,

If last night was a sign of things to come this season then you must think we’re in for a fantastic season. The Heat are one of the top teams in the NBA. They’re currently third in the east and have gone to the finals two out of the last four seasons. They feature two top 15 players, one of whom might even make the hall of fame after he retires. And they have the best coach in the league arguably.

So to come back from 20 down in the fourth to beat them, the only logical conclusion is we’re going to have a great season, right?

Noble, thanks for that link. Shocked to see Giddey as #2 worst high usage TS% (legal troubles affecting him, or does his hair make him appear better than he is?). Also surprised to see Franz Wagner, Brogdon, DeRozan, and Jaylen Brown down so low.

And who the hell is Lonnie Walker IV and what’s he doing among the league leaders?

Who knows what to make of Giddey now, given his legal troubles. He was poised for a big breakout after showing lots of development in his second year but his game has regressed. Giddey playing poorly is pretty much the only thing holding OKC back from just running roughshod over the whole league.

Fun random factoid from The Athletic:

Since 1946-47, only two players in NBA history who are 6-foot-6 or shorter have averaged at least 10 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and 1.0 steals (Charles Barkley, twice; and Gar Heard). (Ausar) Thompson, the No. 5 pick in June’s NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons, is on pace to be the third such player and first rookie, as he’s averaging 10.1 rebounds, 1.7 blocks and 1.1 steals through the first 15 games of his NBA career.

    Addition:

The most absurd stat of them all is this: Thompson has 26 blocks in 15 games, which ranks him sixth in the NBA. It gets crazier. Of those 26 blocks, 10 have come with his left hand.

    Swifty,

it must be really hard for you to understand this… but we got pretty lucky last nite… great win but I hope even you can understand that we cannot simply play like that and expect to win many games….

for the willfully ignorant… the offense is sliding… and still has further to drop…. randle.. I dunno what the excuses are now… but yea if he was hurting earlier… he still looks ‘hurt’…

but hey I’m an idiot…. all this stuff shouldn’t bother you since everything’s going great….

As long as he is on the roster and healthy, and as long as Thibs is the coach, Randle is going to average somewhere around 35 mpg and is going to have a usage of 28% or above. There is no reason to discuss alternatives other than to stimulate the imagination.

A more worthy discussion is whether he should be moved. That is the only way that his minutes will decrease. But it is probably not happening any time soon, so even that is sort of pointless.

Beyond playing time and usage, it is certainly valid to discuss ways to rein him in from his worst impulses, especially on nights where the shots aren’t falling. Most importantly, he does a few things far too often that need to be addressed, all of which involve a combination of putting his head down, over-dribbling, and making suboptimal to poor decisions with the ball:
-Leaving his feet when passing, leading to passes that are either uncatchable or requiring lime-killing adjustment from the pass receiver
    -Getting stripped in traffic
-Ignoring wide-open teammates or being too slow to recognize them

His shot profile is sort of the same as last year. His assist% and rebound% are actually higher than they were last year. He’s up about a half a turnover per 36, and that needs to improve. But the most glaring thing is that he’s not making shots at the rate that he needs to for a player of his usage. But he is also drawing doubles and triples on every possession where he backs into the paint, and just like Mitch gets afforded all kinds of grace despite his paltry 0.7 BPM because of stuff that is purportedly not reflected in the box score, Randle deserves some of the same grace.

But he’s 8th in the NBA in defensive rebound percentage and 1st among PFs. He’s also 3rd in assist percentage for PFs behind LeBron, Durant, and and Zion. Considering that he’s playing with a C who is not a particularly good at getting defensive rebounds and who creates no space, and a PG in Brunson that is actually below him in AST%, this team kinda needs him on the floor, for better or worse.

So tweaking is a possibility. But any significant change in role, usage, or minutes is highly unlikely. Let’s just hope that he gets better.

we have to ride or die with randle…. you can’t really take usg from him and expect to get anywhere….

that does not mean that we keep doing the same things and expect different outcomes… the whole point with keeping cores together for so long is that you add wrinkles every year that unlock different things for your players….

we are doing the same things with randle as he bullies his way to the rim with 3 guys ready to swat him… we have to do better than that… but we aren’t… and we can’t really do anything if randle isn’t right… would’ve been nice to draft other high usg options but we didn’t and so randles destiny is our destiny….

so buckle up…. this is the roster until Donovan Mitchell goes on the market…

Swifty, just keep on keepin’ on! You’ve been right more than just about everyone here about most things, so you go right on savoring last night’s lucky win, along with the other 8 lucky wins before that and all the 40 or so lucky wins and lucky playoff wins to follow! I’ll be right there with you, bud!

As much as dj tries to will the Knicks into finishing under .500 this season is on pace to be just like 2023 which means close to 50 wins and a trip to the 2nd rd of the playoffs. I mean as horrible as apparently the Knicks have played this season they’re 6th in SRS and are on pace to win 49 games…

I know defensive numbers when being guarded by a defender can be a bit wonky but how about Butler going 0 for 6 when guarded by RJ with most of those shots coming in the 4th quarter.

BBA – to the eye test, RJ was really locked in last night on defense. He’s been solid the whole season, but it seems he takes special pride in guarding Butter and DeRozan, two players he’s been compared to.

RJ played a good floor game overall I think. Great defense on that last play, he correctly sussed out that Butler was going to be shooting that 3 and defended accordingly.

He had a few clunkers recently but his play has been steady, and I’m starting to believe in the improvements. He’s just playing a much smarter game this year.

We’ve always mentioned that RJ seems to play pretty good one on one defense, his problem is similar to Randle that off the ball they get completely lost and at times show disinterest in hustling on defense. But RJ especially against more physical wings seems to be able to hold his own and even takes pride in guarding them.

RJ was kind of lost in the third quarter and looking terrible. And then he had a steal, that big and 1, that huge three, and a few other plays.

I’d say more good than great but I will take good.

It’s a pretty good bet that a major change to the roster is coming. It’s only a question of when and at what position.

We only have three players that are at least arguably top-5 at his role when playing to reasonable expectations, and that’s Julius Randle (starting PF), Immanuel Quickley (6th man), and Isaiah Hartenstein (reserve C). Brunson (starting PG) is probably 6-10, Mitch is somewhere in the 7-12 range depending on criteria/taste, RJ is probably outside the top 15 (starting SF), Grimes is bottom-5 (starting SG), Hart is probably 5-10 (glue guy) and DDV top 20 (reserve combo guard.)

Then there are contracts vs. role and ranking By far our most valuable contract is Brunson because a top-10 PG is nearly always a max player. Then comes IQ although he gains/loses value due to his uncertain contract status. Then probably Mitch, because he’s on a very team-friendly deal. Then RJ because the perception in FOs around the league of his value on his contract is almost certainly higher than the KB consensus. Randle would be great to replace, but good luck finding a player that does everything he does, only at a higher efficiency and with lower turnovers.

And if you factor in that IQ and iHart are bench players and would likely lose positional standing in starter’s role (i.e. iHart goes from #1 as a backup to #20-ish as a starter), there isn’t a single position that couldn’t benefit from an upgrade if the right player could be had for the right price. But there are also cap considerations. If upgrading from Grimes to LaVine caps the team out and costs assets that preclude other upgrades, then is it worth it? Probably not.

As such, it’s just really hard to discern who that upgrade might be. For better or worse, Brunson is untouchable, right?

The optimistic way of looking at things is to believe that as we get closer to the trade deadline, or maybe after the playoffs, some bargains for really good players is going to be a thing. Some disappointing capped-out team is going to be looking to dump long-term salary for draft picks and expirings.

Every winner has luck on their side. Luck is when preparedness meets oppoetunity.

Yes, since we didn’t beat one of the best teams in the NBA easily, it must mean our season is doomed. Nothing about our team from this moment on can get better and every weakness will only get worse.

    Three intriguing games tonight:

    PHI @ OKC
LAL @ CLE (depending on who plays)
    DAL @ LAC

We’re getting closer to the point where the contenders and pretenders are going to start settling in. Probably have another few weeks before I take the standings all that seriously, but games like these are worth keeping an eye on.

I don’t think Randle will ever get fewer minutes, but his usage could go down in a productive way if we trade for a 1a or 1b star. That would allow him to focus more on rebounding and passing while hopefully getting more open looks. I’m pretty sure they want to keep Brunson/RJ/Randle together, so that would mean adding a wing or center to the mix.

RJ’s playing over his head, but I think it’s likely he’s legitimately better at both 3point and FT shooting than he was last season and that’s good enough for me.

“RJ’s playing over his head, but I think it’s likely he’s legitimately better at both 3point and FT shooting than he was last season and that’s good enough for me.”

    This. At least for now!

for the record I will also be happy if RJ is legitimately a 46% shooter from behind the arc

I’m normally with you, djphan, but in this case a significant reason for the offense being shit is down to stupid lineups. There’s an easy path to major improvement.

    1. Trade for veteran lead guard who can play 15 MPG and maybe score a little, a la The Last Gasp Of Derrick Rose from a few years ago

    2. Move Quickley into starting lineup, Grimes to the bench

    3. Platoon DDV and Grimes at bench wing, depending on matchups/situation

so far I would have the league like

    Tier 1

    Boston and Philly

    Tier 2

    Denver and Minny

    Tier 3

like 7 or 8 teams including the Knicks. Denver presumably moves up when they get Murray back

This is a weird year. I’d probably go

    Tier 1: Denver

    Tier 2: Boston

Tier 3: Philadelphia, Milwaukee, Miami, New York, Orlando, Minnesota, OKC, Dallas, Phoenix, Sacramento, LAL

    Tier 4: Golden State, LAC

watched the cavs game…I don’t think we’d trade major assets for mitchell…he’s a slighter better version of julius at a different position with less histrionics…his crunch time decision making is brutal and generally ends with him taking the shot and missing..if we’re waiting on him to free up…god help us….

Denver showed last year that they can turn on the jets in the playoffs simply by playing the best player in the world more minutes. They’re the team to beat until somebody beats them.

Watching Sixers highlights is hilarious because besides some Maxey plays, they almost always just show the other team, and yet as you see the other team score, the number on the Sixers’ side keeps getting bigger seemingly out of nowhere, since the Sixers’ “highlights” are all Embiid and Maxey free throws (28/32 from the line between the two of them).
