cyber, i would very much like to prepare a thanksgiving meal for yourself and max, we could even invite that crazy greek KYN, heck – for all of y’all whom maybe have never had like a tasty turkey/mashed potatoes/sweet peas/dressing/cranberry JELLY smothered in some beautiful gravy made from basted bird juice type meal…

it’s some tasty stuff, if you have a taste for that stuff…

    ah, so good…

edit: oh yeah, forgot rolls…and milk, lots of cold milk…

That’d be amazing, Geo! Who knows if someday we’ll go to the US to watch the Knicks win a championship, or if you’ll come to europe to visit us! 😉

Cyber, is there an equivalent of Thanksgiving Dinner in Portugal?

Not really, maybe easter sunday lunch is an event not far from it, but probably there’s people that celebrate both, so here we don’t have Thanksgiving. Which is kind of odd, because we are catholic in a great majority of the population and it’d make sense to celebrate it.

#we could even invite that crazy greek KYN#

    I’m crazy for good food!
    Thanks Geo!

Thanks, cyber. Are turkeys available for consumption? I know that there are no wild turkeys in Europe but are the domesticated kind sold? Or is turkey sort of an exotic meal, or just not a thing at all?

Apparently one of the risks of drafting teenagers is that a couple of years later when they are rich and famous they might sleep with underage teenagers. I didn’t see that one coming.

I’m sorry, but traditional Thanksgiving Day food sucks. Gravy can redeem some of it, but ooof. I’m only OK with it for the pie.

Christmas dinner is another thing – at least raised by an Italian mother. Chicken Milanese, eggplant parm, manicotti… That’s a feast.

    rama,

Italians do food well on every holiday. I’ve had some amazing Thanksgiving feasts that mixed turkey, stuffing etc… with Italian food. Unfortunately, almost all my aunts and uncles are gone and those days are gone with them.

“I’m sorry, but traditional Thanksgiving Day food sucks. Gravy can redeem some of it, but ooof. I’m only OK with it for the pie.”

YOU SHOULD BE SORRY!!! REAL SORRY!!!

I’m good with all of the sides (unless it’s related to sweet potatoes), and the desserts. Just don’t care if I have any actual turkey. 🙂

It’s common food here, but a whole turkey usually we only do it on special occasions, like Christmas lunch and Easter lunch.

And now Max and KYN should chip in about their traditions over turkey and thanksgiving. 😉 And people from other places, like Bruno (Brazil), and i lost track of who’s from where, iserp is from Spain if i remember correctly, we had dtrickey from down under but i don’t see him in a long time (maybe since when we had to register again). And we have english_knick and slovene_knick, so two more countries to know about their traditions. Probably there’s more countries present here at KB.

About turkey it is called “peru” in portuguese, so we have a joke here in Portugal that goes like this:
(us) – You know turkey is a strange country!
    (listener) – Why?
(us) – Because it’s a country that is placed in Europe in english, and in South America in portuguese.
    😀

Thanks Geo, your recipe made me drool 🙂 … and who knows, maybe sooner or later (but only if Donald Trump isn’t president of course)…

To answer Z-Man’s questions, turkey is relatively common food in Italy (but not cooked “as whole”) especially now with people so worried about consuming tooo much red meat (that I love immensely, yummi!).

And we have no one to “thanksgive” 😉 the closer equivalent I can think of are, as Cyber wrote, Easter and Christmas*.

    * Traditions vary between regions so you can have it as a supper on Christmas Eve or lunch on Christmas Day, while Easter is always lunch

Tonight’s line swings between 5.5-6.5 points in our favor, maybe they know something about Bam (and Robinson)…

By the way, are you ready for the Jaime Jaquez Jr. career night?

    They’re Real Umarells Cyber! 😀

And speaking of traditional dinners, I’m out for a “lasagna night” this evening (wives made trays of lasagnas, then we old guys meet at a divorced friend’s house, to eat the aforementioned lasagnas and drink wine and beer as landsknechts), I hope to be back in time (and sober enough) for the game… 😀

You call red meat to turkey in italy? Here we call it white meat, along with chicken and duck.

I hope to be back in time (and sober enough) for the game… 😀

Hahaha! You’ve made me remember the times when we needed to NOT be sober to endure the game! 😉 😛

No, I didn’t explain it well.

We call it “white meat” as you do,
people eat more of it now because of concerns about “red meat”.

Not a Thanksgiving tradition in Greece also but many occasions for family gatherings with food like Easter, Christmas and others.
Turkey meat was not well known here till the 90s but it’s very common today although chicken is preferred due being more compact and perhaps cheaper.

You all bring me so much joy at times 😊

sitting somewhere in the VA er…always makes me comfortable being around the veteran stuff and folks whom look out for us…

got the covid cooties for the second time…cause i’m a dumb ass…

i remember the first time i heard i had covid…lord i was pissed, yelled and screamed across the parking lot on my way back to the car…

fair enough though, i seem to be angry and pissed pretty consistently, even while smiling and laughing it seems…it’s odd..

good luck figuring all this mental health stuff out…

back in therapy…it’s nice, we no longer discuss trying to keep my shit together just so i could survive work…

right now i’m trying to understand the level of mania and compulsion that comes along with the near constant perception of having an adrenaline rush…

it’s funny, the strong sense of paranoia i have makes me very risk adverse…so thankfully the mania doesn’t turn towards manic behavior…i could stand to watch my finances a bit better…

still in all, it’s a bit like being involuntary hooked to an orgasmatron…mania and adrenaline are not bad things at all…

after a while though, like a lifetime, it’s just too much…it becomes wearisome…

best thing i can do for myself – get in great shape…like doc bob (KfiCL) kind of shape…figure out how to better control and utilize what’s happening…

I don’t think construction would be my umarell thing…

i think i’d prefer more to sit somewhere and critique folks on their appearance or driving habits…those would be my umarell sweet spots…

You know what I’m thankful for (besides the food hangover I’m currently suffering from)? What a great time to be an NBA fan. A great bushel of kids making things happen, from Chet and Wemby to guys making the leap like Shai and Ant to a sea of wings with huge potential like the Thompson twins and Brandon Miller and on and on, including second and third-year pros starting to figure things out. As well as intriguing mysteries like Scoot. The only drag is I can’t keep track of them all…

I mean, fuck old man LeBron and his 26-8-7…

The song Modern Love just came on the radio and just once I would like to re litigate the whole “saxophone in pop music” argument bc y’all criminally neglected how significant it is in the work of David Bowie.

i think i’d prefer more to sit somewhere and critique folks on their appearance or driving habits…those would be my umarell sweet spots…

Driving habits? You should come to Portugal, we are all mad when we sit our ass on a car to drive it! That’s one thing i certainly wouldn’t recommend about my country, it drives me nuts (see what i did here?) !! 😛

we had dtrickey from down under but i don’t see him in a long time

Sorry guys, i think Doogie probably exploded when reading this. Of course i meant “…but i haven’t seen him in…”.

    👏👏👏

Non-Americans get a bit of a pass, cyber. You speak and write *way* better in English than I ever will in Portuguese.

This Friday game is just weird. I mean, I’m a huge NFL fan, so I guess I’m supposed to like it, but I just don’t dig a football game coming on in the middle of a workday.

Doogie, you need to tell your bosses in Homeland that the Friday after Thanksgiving is not a work day. This is America for goodness’ sake.

    At the game tonight too!

I hope Josh Giddy has a good criminal lawyer because I just read she’s a sophomore in high school and she’s from California. The age of consent in CA is 18 and there are no “close in age” type exceptions (which may not matter anyway because he’s not a minor).

If it happened in CA he has a serious problem.

I wonder how that state issue works.

If she’s from CA and he lives in OKC (which has an age of consent of 16), how does it work?

Is it residence or where the deed occurred?

He could be looking at anywhere from 1-15 years in jail. I assume it will be on the lower end of that because the ages are not too far apart and I’m going to guess that she’s going to back him and say they were in some kind of consensual relationship. Still, he has to be looking at jail time unless they both lie and say her post saying she had sex with him was a lie.

Re: the Giddey imbroglio, I’m honestly surprised this hasn’t happened more often given that underage girls are everywhere in the bar/club scene and pro athletes are more or less the most attractive men in the world.

Honestly can’t imagine him doing any time for it if athletes of far lower profile routinely get away with exponentially worse offenses (see Turner, Brock). The girl will have very strong incentives to disavow her social media post and no incentives to stand by it. He said/she said is hard enough to prosecute to begin with, but when they’re both saying the same things it becomes a hill no DA wants to die on.

    Here come the Magic.

The way they’ve totally leapfrogged us by simply using their draft picks to acquire good young talent is as disappointing as it is predictable. They’re a lot better than us now and the gap will only widen as their young core develops.

Between OKC, Houston, Orlando, and SAS there sure is a growing number of data points on teams that prioritize asset accumulation rocketing past us while we mezzanine our way to a play-in appearance trying to win with a team that sucks at putting the ball in the basket.

Clearly high BB IQ does not track well with high IQ.

    And I’m not talking Quickley.

    Called that one, Pags…

    Hubert IVsays:
    July 3, 2023 at 14:17

The outcome we are not protecting against is the very young teams with upside improving more than us via development and draft

The Orlando Magic are poised to be one of these teams.

When did the Magic get much better than us?

They’re not MUCH better than us yet, but they just handily beat Boston, they’re 11-5 and ahead of us in the standings, and they have a boatload of players under 25 in their rotation. They’re playing elite defense built around rebounding and turnovers, and appear to be a few shooters away from being able to really wreck some fools in the East. Not a bad contract on the books, and they have a few surplus future assets as well: a 2025 pick from DEN, and a possible pick swap with PHO in 2026 which might pan out well because PHO might stink by then.

They didn’t do any sort of special Hinkie-style tanking to get into this position, they just drafted guys when they had picks, didn’t chase marginal wins, and let the team grow organically. Crazy, I know.

Orlando has has win totals in the 25 wins or less in 6 of their last 10 seasons. In the other 4, they have had seasons of 35, 42, 33, and 34 wins. They have not won a playoff series since 2010.

But hey, they drafted guys when they had picks, didn’t chase marginal wins, and let the team grow organically!

Good breakdown, JK47. In addition to being well-positioned to overtake us just by their own organic growth, they are also in a good place to outbid us with their extra picks and deeper selection of good young prospects, whereas we’ve diluted our asset pool by trading quarters for two dimes.

This lays bare the flaws of the hybrid strategy in a league where the structure rewards a min-max approach. Teams that went all in are mostly better than us now, while teams that accumulated assets are set up to be better than us for the next decade. I don’t expect us to be better positioned than an asset juggernaut like OKC within my lifetime.

Z–man, remind me again, what more do we have to show for our last 10 seasons than the Magic do for theirs? How about the 10 before that? Keep in mind that they’ve been contenders far more recently than we have.

I’ll trade a much better future for a slightly better past any day of the week.

“Z–man, remind me again, what more do we have to show for our last 10 seasons than the Magic do for theirs? How about the 10 before that? Keep in mind that they’ve been contenders far more recently than we have.

As soon as it is clear that they have a much better future, we can have a conversation about it. As for now, I’m holding off on jumping aboard the Magic hype train. But have a nice ride!

Randle has been horrific. I also miss New RJ.

At least IQ is giving us a reason to live.

It amazes me how the Heat can rebound with the lineups they put out there. We should be dominating.
