Back-to-back while missing our best player so far, against the strongest team in the league who actually got a day off… not sure how else this could’ve ended

In KFS pregame pod, there was ample discussion about how the Celts’ ability to go 5 out is sort of kryptonite for lots of teams in general and the Knicks in particular. By pulling Mitch away from the basket, it opens up driving lanes for Tatum and Brown where Mitch’s and iHart’s rim protection and defensive rebounding are much less of a factor.

That issue is magnified by our lack of long wings who can both score from different levels and defend near the rim. That issue was exacerbated with RJ being out…not that he’s the prototype anyway.

And that’s the problem with the Celtics. They have a rotation in which every single player is a legitimate threat from the three point line, except maybe DPoY candidate Jrue Holiday, and he can’t be just left open (Or can he? Maybe that’s the way to go…put Mitch on him next time? Did we try that?). They bring Horford, Prichard, Hauser, and Kornet off the bench. That’s sort of a souped-up 7SoL lineup in that they can actually protect the rim and defend size, unlike the D’Antoni versions in Phoenix and Houston.

The had some trouble with Philly and Minny, due to their size so they are not invulnerable, but it will be very hard to beat them in a seven-game series unless one of their key players (i.e. any of their starters) gets injured.

A lot of teams have their C playing free safety and letting the worst shooter take open 3s. But I’m not sure Jrue is a bad enough shooter for that to work.

The Celts are loaded and we’re probably just waiting for KP to get injured or for them to win another championship.

Meanwhile, it should be disturbing to Cavs fans that their vaunted defense got utterly embarrassed by the Kings. It would definitely bug me that the Kings scored 132 points while Spida and Garland had 1 foul between them.

I’ve been saying for quite awhile that our lack of length at wing was going to be problematical against some matchups and even pointed to Boston as the #1 problem. That was one of the reasons I was so hot for OG.

Playing 5 out with KP at C has long been the formula everyone wanted. You have a ton of space to drive because you drag the opposing C away from the paint. That especially hurts us with Mitch

The problem has been that early on KP wasn’t strong enough to handle the job defensively and stay healthy. IMO, he’s still not ideal defensively and on the boards against some Cs (Embiid and Jokic are obvious problems). But at least he’s still a problem in the paint with his length.

It didn’t work in Dallas because they misused him so badly on offense, he was often hurt, Doncic used to look him off when he was open, KP used to get pissed off, and they didn’t like each other. But he seems way more mature and confident now, he’s a bit stronger, he’s accepting his role and the coach and other players are constantly praising him. That’s all bad for us.

It would definitely bug me that the Kings scored 132 points while Spida and Garland had 1 foul between them.

    Things that don’t bug Z—Man:

    1) Driving to remote locations for volleyball games.

    2) Incinerating draft picks.

    3) Bruno’s self-exile.

(Have I missed anything, or is that the complete list?)

The Kings—who had the best offense of all-time last year—scoring a lot of points isn’t a condemnation of your defense.

C’s are just an awful matchup for us, not just in terms of talent but in the type of talent. And we didn’t have RJ to help out on either end. That we had the lead for most of the first half was impressive. I’m not huge on the concept of moral victories, but this loss also doesn’t trouble me in the way that several of our others this year did. We are what we are: good but not great, and at least capable of holding our own against the few genuinely great teams there are in the league this year.

encouraged by… julius randle’s free throws… got some touchy calls but getting to the line often and hitting them is what he needs to do….

discouraged by.. randle getting blocked again and another <50% night from 2pt land… also with all the talk about IQ's regression from midrange sort of just happened all at once too… more to come on that front…

almost 10 games in…. rim percentages are still holding and not in a good way…. we took a look at blocks last week but that's also translating to how we are shooting… and all are down from last year….

    2022
    Brunson – .612
    Randle – .679
    Barrett – .642
    Quickley – .681
    Robinson – .700
    Hart – .736

    2023
    Brunson – .500
    Randle – .368(!)
    Barrett – .633
    Quickley – .500
    Robinson – .563
    Hart – .667

Some of this will recover especially those on the edge… but it's a very clear trend and we're at the point where samples aren't totally meaningless…. there's very clearly something going on… last night it was mostly the celts packing the paint and letting certain guys shoot… other nights help is coming on those iso's early and often….

it's a similar theme to the block party… the league is adjusting to our attack the basket/get those kobe assists offense… and we're relying on our players to adjust…. brunson's getting pushed out to the midrange… randle wants to continue to bulldoze to the rim (and get blocked)…. quickley is mostly moving to the midrange… Grimes has totally forsaken getting near the paint and got a lawn chair on his spot on the 3pt line…. RJ is doing the best as he's gotten more passive and opportunistic in sets and transition….

this is now very clearly flashing yellow…. if iso'ing isn't going to work as well our offense will be in trouble… and this is not just a boston celtic thing either… this stuff has been happening to varying degrees in all the other games including the hornets and spurs…. 9 games isn't much and a lot of things can happen in 9 games… but having this wide of a problem is not some artifact of a random sample… you take all those rim attempts together that is definitely a meaningful sample…

“The Kings—who had the best offense of all-time last year—scoring a lot of points isn’t a condemnation of your defense.”

The Cavs are 4-6. In addition to this game, they’ve given up 125, 121, and 128 points. They start Spida, Garland, and Strus…none of whom are known to be exactly lockdown defenders…especially Strus as a 3.

For all the talk about how the moneyball Knicks got exposed in the playoffs, I think the Cavs’ D being #1 last year was the real regular season charade from last year. It also underscores why I was never in favor of a Brunson-Spida backcourt. I can’t see the Cavs getting past the first round of the playoffs with the Spida-Garland combo unless they draw a very soft opponent.

Yeah the Celtics aren’t a great matchup for us, but in the game at MSG when we were at full strength we had them down 6 with 3 minutes left and really should have won the game.

You expect Tatum and KP to get theirs, but what killed us was Doogie Hauser not missing (and off course IQ having a bad game) Normally our bench has a huge advantage over theirs but not last night, and part of that is Hart having to start.

See this is when having a “boy wonder” from the coaching ranks as your GM pays dividends.

Stevens clearly understands the game and where it’s headed and has scoured the league to create this current “5-out” advantage.

I’m not even trying to bash Leon here, but you have to admire The Celts teambuilding approach, even though they have gotten a few lucky breaks.

And sure, we could’ve played better last night with a healthy RJ and a non-terrible IQ, but the Celtics also registered a terrible game from White and didn’t even unleash Luke “The Animal” Kornet on us!

I really think this might be the Celtics’ year, unfortunately (hoping for a jinx here).

Is Jrue Holiday a hall-of-fame candidate?

I hadn’t really considered it, but he’s played long enough to tally some robust career numbers, and he’s won a ring and a gold medal. He also seems like he isn’t going to be done soon.

Jrue might suffer from being more of a defensive player in an offense-heavy era. He’s been awarded with two all-star appearances as a reserve and three first team all-defense nods. That doesn’t seem like quite enough in today’s day and age. Playing with Tatum and Brown might mute his stats a bit, but if the Celts win a chip with him in the next year or two, and he plays well for another 5-6 years, that might do it. No matter what, he certainly will deserve ample consideration when all is said and done.

The Celts gambled big on four things:

    1) KP’s health come playoff time
    2) KP’s WAS numbers not being a mirage
    3) Horford having another 2000 minute year left in his 37yo body
    4) Mazzulla being a better coach than he showed last year

Beyond that, maybe they make a slick move before the deadline. But as things stand, those 4 things are the pivots I see. I still think they are vulnerable to teams with both elite size even if those 4 things go well. But if, if, if they stay healthy, they will be very tough to beat in a 7-game series.

I guess Jrue’s career track is similar to Lowry’s. Is Lowry a likely hall-of-famer at this point?

Let’s not forget that Porzingis is known as Mr. October for a reason.

I think some of that is left over from the Knicks era when he’d get off to great starts and then fade. That really wasn’t an issue last year or in Dallas. I’d say he’s still more of an injury risk than the average player, but I think less so than when he was much thinner and weaker.

I’m partial to Jrue over Lowry, but there’s not a ton of daylight between them. Still think both should ultimately fall short but the case for Jrue will likely be stronger.

If we had to choose between one of the following to replace with Spida that would make us significantly better who would it be?
    Brunson
    Quickley
    Grimes
    Barrett
    Randle
And would you be ready to fashion a trade that included 2 1rps to make that happen?

The HOF should be for either perennial top 5 in the NBA types or for those who were transcendent in their roles e.g. Draymond, Klay, Rodman, Mitch (just kidding!)

Exceptions should be massive compilers or integral parts of dynastic teams.

Jrue is pretty close to being the best defensive PG of his day, and is very good on the other side of the ball. He is also renowned for his character both on and off the court. That very well might be enough right now, and he still has some prime left.

The Celts are loaded and we’re probably just waiting for KP to get injured or for them to win another championship.

There’s a very short list of teams that can beat Boston this year. I think it might just be Milwaukee and Denver.

Lowry is a hall of very good guy to me, but the basketball HOF lets everyone in so maybe he has a shot.

Cyber, the answer is probably Brunson.

We’ve been talking about the Celts’ offense but in Jrue and DW the have one of the best defensive guard tandems in the NBA, and one that might rank historically. Both are all-defense candidates that have both size and quickness, and both can score pretty well.

Brunson and Spida is not the answer to that.

Re: last night. There seems to be one guy that we’re largely letting off the hook. Most of us here (me included) love DDV and are glad that he is on the squad. But *especially* when we are missing a key player, we need more from him than 5/1/1. Pretty much a no-show.

So I google-imaged him and he doesn’t look at all like a retired school principal, but Zach Harper’s name does start with a Z and he does say, “I never sold my Barrett stock,” so I’m suspicious…

what killed us was Doogie Hauser not missing

Sam Hauser (who I literally did not know existed before yesterday) has a 1.7 career BPM in over 1600 mins. He’s over 42% from behind the arc and has a .644 eFG%. His 1.7 steals/blocks per 36 is better than Josh Hart, RJ Barrett, and Immanuel Quickley.

This guy was an undrafted free agent and he makes the league minimum.

Hauser is Exhibit 9,000 in the case against trading first round picks and paying $150mm for your 7th & 8th men.

Boston is paying Jaylen Brown the richest contract in NBA history when they could have easily replaced his production with an undrafted free agent

Yes, two-time All-NBA player Jaylen Brown and 7th man Josh Hart are perfectly analogous.

    Jaylen Brown .6 BPM
    Sam Hauser 5.6 BPM

I don’t understand why the Celtics didn’t just sign another Sam Hauser

Yes, two-time All-NBA player Jaylen Brown and 7th man Josh Hart are perfectly analogous.

hubie if discovered i beg you not to let a minor clerical error dent your confidence in the burgeoning hauserian labor theory program.

Developing: NBA teams are probing the availability of Bulls two-time All-Star Zach LaVine and there is increased openness from both sides about exploring a trade, sources say.Details at @TheAthletic: https://t.co/2UvELP2lMG— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) November 14, 2023

I genuinely don’t know what they’ll get for him. My general philosophy is there’s not really any such thing as an overpaid good player. Someone will take your good player, there are simply too few of them.

But I accept the possibility of exceptions, and LaVine may well be one of them.

Lol I don’t mind trolling when it’s this humorous.

But HLT cites the eminent availability of inexpensive bench players as evidence to avoid trading scarce goods for something that can be acquired at much less cost.

DRed’s idea, i.e. that being able to acquire a good bench player forgoes the need to pursue elite talent, actually falls under a rival umbrella known as Leon Labor Theory.

Geo, in this case my media awareness is entirely your fault, as you mentioned Principal Krupp in some previous post and I had to google it…

I didn’t know who Principal Krupp is, and now that i know, I wish that I didn’t.

“So I google-imaged him and he doesn’t look at all like a retired school principal, but Zach Harper’s name does start with a Z and he does say, “I never sold my Barrett stock,” so I’m suspicious…”

He’s a smart guy. That rules out any possibility that he was a school principal at any time.

Jrue should be in the Hall of Fame. He’s been an incredible defender and his RAPM has been top-5 or near top-5 pretty frequently because of his defense and passing. Stats that include something akin to RAPM love him too.

okay raven, doogie, since you’ve stuck it out with me so far, i’ll finish the thought…

what’s interesting about the follicle and midriff challenged character benjamin krupp, principal “at large”, is the duality of the character’s nature…at times completely dickish as principal krupp…other times absolutely awesome as captain underpants…

yeah, that was pretty fucking deep for a tuesday, eh?

Captain Underpants was pretty clever despite it’s lowest common denominator name*

*As far as I can remember from grade school

    This is good knickerblogger….

Hauser must be horrific on defense. 3 and D without the D. Someone come up with a clever acronym for that which spells NOVAK.

Predictions on what contender A)wants LaVine, and B)has the assets and tradeable contracts to acquire and fit him in?

Since I literally learned of his existence last night, I can’t speak to his defense but I found this breakdown online and I’m posting it just bc of the joke about RJ at the end.

tl;dr Hauser is good at defense.

Opposing offenses target Hauser on a whopping 21% of possessions, the highest percentage in the league for qualifying players. Clearly, offenses are under the impression that Hauser can’t defend, so they target him with reckless abandon when he’s in.

Unfortunately for these teams, though, they only score 0.96 per possession, which would, again, be by far the worst offense in the NBA.

That’s probably why Sam has the 5th best defensive rating on an individually-stacked defensive unit.

So, what makes Hauser effective in isolation defense? First, he’s surprisingly solid at sliding his feet and staying in front of smaller defenders.

Darius Garland – one of the shiftiest guards in the league – throws a myriad of moves at Hauser, but Hauser doesn’t bite. He slides his feet and forces Garland into a contested, off-balance floater. Notice, too, the lack of cutting and screening from the other offensive players, which allows all of the help defenders to be ready in the gap.

Hauser can also defend larger wings in isolation.

Here, Sam beats RJ Barrett to the spot even before Barrett knows he’s going there (shocker, he went left) and displays some solid physicality and hands to steal the ball.

    two-time All-NBA player Jaylen Brown

    one-time*

and he got the nod because he scored a lot of points on a deep and good team

    I’d rather have Hart

Going to be funny when Brown doesn’t make the HOF…

    That’s interesting about Hauser….

I hope we don’t make a LaVine trade. It would mean, at the very least, giving up Quickley, iHart, Fournier, and draft picks. Probably Grimes too (I assume Leon wants to keep RJ.)

That’s a pretty steep price while hurting our perimeter defense.

“I hope we don’t make a LaVine trade. It would mean, at the very least, giving up Quickley, iHart, Fournier, and draft picks. Probably Grimes too (I assume Leon wants to keep RJ.)”

Serious question: is LaVine a better all-around player than IQ? My answer is NO.

So no, I wouldn’t trade IQ straight up for LaVine, let alone with other good young players and draft picks.

Good catch on the one-time… I thought the rules were you had to make it twice to qualify for the supermax… guess not.

    I’d rather have Hart

I’d rather have Hauser, a first round pick, and $18mm worth of cap space.

    To each their own.

finishing up leslie jones on The Daily Show (nov. 13)…she crushed it…

i’ve seen a couple of folks step in since trevor left…leslie really stands out…

while we are talking boob tube – two of my favorite things in the world right now:

    Stingray: naturescape

    Loupe: art & music

if you need spaceout/meditate time, like a whole flipping lot of it, there it is…they stream on streaming things…also a bunch of content on youtube (what’s linked)…it’s xanadu/shangri-la for your head…even better with surround sound…

So apparently it’s the Lakers, Heat, and Sixers who are vying for LaVine. Good.

    My money is on Morey.

Interesting, I think Orlando and Toronto might be dark horse candidates. They both have reasonable records but need more offense and don’t already have someone notable at shooting guard.

Cyber, the answer is probably Brunson.

So you’re giving the answer before I ask the question, is that it? Let me think… Oh, ok, i got it. Here it goes:
Between Brunson, RJ and Randle, who do you think will be an all star this season? 😀

“So you’re giving the answer before I ask the question, is that it? Let me think… Oh, ok, i got it. Here it goes:

LOL who taught you that trick, my wife, my daughters or my assistant principal?

Someone come up with a clever acronym for that which spells NOVAK

    NOn-defender with Very Accurate Killshot

If Vegas upgrades whoever gets LaVine, I might consider blindly betting against that team for a number of games. To be honest, I don’t feel much better about DeRozan. The only players I like on that team are Ball (unfortunately career in doubt) and Caruso.

The Bulls would have to give me a couple 1st round picks to take LaVine because I wouldn’t be able to match salaries without giving up someone I like better than him even if I included Fournier.

    Obi Toppin breakout alert!

His TS% is pretty impressive this year. I guess he still has to rebound and defend better, but he’s getting his chance there. I haven’t watched their games much. I wonder if he’s still throwing up the occasional UAP from 3.

Hauser had a -0.1 EPM last year and is currently at +0.2 DARKO

Hart was +1.9 EPM and +1.3 DARKO

Obi gets 27 pts on 12-15. Even pulled in a JHart-like 6 rebounds.

Will look forward to highlights on that one, I’m going to guess he didn’t just make long twos and layups.

hali definitely just became the only player ever to get more than 50 pts and 30 assists without a turnover in a two game span

“hali definitely just became the only player ever to get more than 50 pts and 30 assists without a turnover in a two game span…”

The whiff that keeps on giving…

Hart was +1.9 EPM and +1.3 DARKO

    Very insightful.

Amen Thompson is already beasting, even with a so-so shot. And hey, ol’ Knoxy had a pretty nice line again.

Also, Jordan Hawkins is breaking out for the Pels… annoying.

maybe draymond will finally get a reasonable suspension for his bullshit bc he pissed on silver’s ugly court cup

Draymond Green continues to be the biggest idiot in all of sports. He honestly shouldn’t be allowed to play at this point.

I like Steve kerr but he is a Draymond enabler…always making excuses for his behavior…

The Warriors broadcast team should get a suspension too- thank god we have Green and Clyde who’ll call out guys when warranted.

Draymond is impossible to root for, but in following Jordan Poole a bit I’m going to give him a pass for KO’ing that knucklehead.

That T-Wolves team is starting to look for real. I’m not sure how Towns and Gobert work, but the defense has been very good and Towns finally went off last night.
