2023-24 Game Thread: Knicks vs. Hornets (Sunday Matinee Opener)

I feel like that’s what Brian would have led with. No Rozier today and no Frank. How can we lose? (Definitely what Brian would have said.)

Randle looking like he might be back to his usual, athletic, somewhat annoying self. Which I think is a good thing.

When it’s a matinee i always have the feeling we’re going to lose, is our matinee record that bad, or it’s just my impression?

Grimes looks like he’s still sleeping.

I really don’t get Grimes. I want to, but I don’t (yet).

Percentages aside, you get the impression Quick is the only guy we have other teams fear from Steph range

RJ Barrett is not regressing to the mean today. Some really sweet play.

It’s very disconcerting to watch him and enjoy it.

I love our Bench Mob with RJ

I don’t know if Lamelo will ever become a “winning” player, but he’s so fun to watch…

Clyde talking about how much technical foul fines cost back when he played was classic.

We’ll want no part of this Charlotte team once Rozier is healthy, Bridges is back to 100%, and Miller improves as the season progresses (not to mention on/off king Frank). 🙂

dang, barely got done with walking the dog…

lamelo ball is getting better!?!? yikes…

i like quik as a shooting guard, it’s cool he can create, but – if possible focus on scoring and defending…ihart and DDV can run the offense together on the second unit…

Glad to have Randle back. Maybe he reads KB and thought to himself “Lost a step? Me?? I’ll show you“. 😀

Strat, Charlotte is not very good even when fully healthy. Being awful at 3pt shooting and defense is not a recipe for winning basketball.

The Hornets actually have a player who goes by the name “Leaky Black.” Can we get him just for entertainment purposes?

I have to disagree.

They won 43 games 2 years ago with much the same team they have now, but LaMelo is further along and they added Miller.

Last year they lost Bridges, LaMelo was out for most of the season, and they had other injuries. So they tanked.

Once they get to full strength this year and Bridges is in shape I think they are going to be competitive with mid playoff and play-in teams (assuming they are healthy and no one gets arrested).

Glad Mitch is fixing his TS% in one Sunday afternoon

LOL! He’s really dominating night after night nowadays. 😉

“…and Bridges is in shape”

Is there actually a chance that Bridges plays this year? I would think not after his parole violation or whatever it was…which I believe involved throwing billiard balls at a car that his ex and his kids were in…

Sounds like Oubre’s injuries are not terrible…broken ribs and bruises. Probably out a month or two at most I would guess.

Let’s put this game away early so the main guys won’t have to play too many minutes with Boston coming up tomorrow night.

don’t think these jalen charges are worth it

that’s a very good thought…steals are one thing, they can mess up team defense with risky behavior…charges though…

he does fall and land well usually…however – there is most definitely only so much of an impact a torso can withstand before something bends or moves in a way it shouldn’t…

LaMelo is really fun, but that red tattoo behind his ear keeps making me think he got ice-picked.

Rozier is out for a couple of more games and supposedly Miles Bridges has been working out with the team getting ready to come off suspension. There has been no indication that I am aware of that the suspension will be extended due to his latest issue. He’s a knucklehead, but setting that kind of stuff aside, if he plays and is in shape he’s a good player. So maybe by mid season he’ll be hitting stride.

“Mitch using Williams like a rented mule…”

That mule just kicked Mitch in the groin…

KBA, short memory — IQ 3 at the buzzer of the first quarter…

Haha. Okay. Maybe I should say we never finish a half well 😉

boa noite cyber…o que tem para o jantar?

Geo, your portuguese is perfect now. 😉 I don’t know, maybe i’ll make some pasta.

DDV is surprisingly really athletic.

In the 2018 NCAA Finals he went nuts against Michigan and threw down some highlight reel dunks. He’s crazy athletic

“DDV is surprisingly really athletic.”

Shouldn’t be surprising, he had the best vertical at the 2019 NBA draft combine (42″).

DDV is surprisingly really athletic.

Yeah, he must’ve ruined a lot of pickup games, by his looks i wouldn’t pick him. 😀

Yeah I know how athletic DDV is, I’m not surprised by his vertical but you watch him on the court he just looks like a normal PG then all of a sudden he leaps off the ground and you’re like holy shit where did that come from.

Knicks came into this game with the 7th best point differential in the NBA and that’s going to get better after this game.

Six and a half minutes of Sims! I feel blessed.

Thank you for being clumsy, iHart…

sauce on top of the pasta?

Yes, i think i already have tomato sauce so it’ll be easy, because i’m no cook, just simple things. 😛

For all the (valid) talk of DDV’s redundancy, “athleticism” broadly defined is an area that definitely felt like a weakness last year. He seems to help, though I’m admittedly unsure how to quantify that. Maybe it’s more of a watchability thing than anything else. In any event I’m happy to have him and fans of 29 other teams would be too.

It’s kinda funny that we’re so deep our garbage time lineup includes IQ, who miiiiiiight be our best overall player…

Need to put the scrubs in right now…

Hey, we don’t have scrubs on the Knicks! 😛

Leaky Black in!

Along with Deuce, three minutes of him, too. This is a great Sunday.

I guess if every Knick but Grimes shoots 50+% from the field (and Grimes shoots 40%) we might win some games 😉

Sometimes I forget that Duane Washingotn Jr. and Daquan Jeffries are two separate people, but I am dedicating to committing that to memory as of today

Have the 4 Villanova guys ever been on the floor at the same time since all being on the Knicks?

“For all the (valid) talk of DDV’s redundancy, “athleticism” broadly defined is an area that definitely felt like a weakness last year.”

I get what you’re thinking, but it isn’t the case that we gained athleticism by swapping out Obi for IQ, is it?

It’s more about 2-way versatility in an athletic package, i.e. another athletic glue guy. DDV is a lot like Josh Hart…just seems to be in the right place at the right time, and does a little of everything on both ends. It’s amazing that when you have Quickley, Hart and DDV on the floor at the same time, they cover so much court. Even though their games are very similar in some regards, they don’t get in each other’s way the same way that RJ, Randle and Brunson do. None of them have a defined space that they need to operate within. And DDV’s high b-ball IQ, skill set, and motor combined with his positional athleticism make him more valuable than a guy like Obi, who played smaller than his size, i.e wasn’t versatile enough to make an impact when he wasn’t scoring.

If the other team has traditional bigs, we should be able to dominate the glass each time. Robinson and Hartstein are too physical for most teams. It’s those stretch 4s and 5s that have given us problems in the past.

Tomorrow with Porzingis and later with KAT will be a big test for Mitch and gang.

I will say again that for as big as Mark Williams is supposed to be, Mitch looked a LOT bigger and taller than him.

According to this article, Miles Bridges’s return is a go. I’m literally shocked.

Williams is bigger but Mitch plays bigger.

Mitch seems much stouter certainly. He doesn’t have his rookie athleticism but filling out so much has helped his game.

Damn the Bucks have a minus 3.5 point differential.

The Magic are really talented. They’re going to be a handful soon.

According to this article, Miles Bridges’s return is a go. I’m literally shocked.

I’m shocked too. They’re still saying, after one full month, that they’re gathering information about the billiard balls incident !?

Obi has 14 points on 7 shots. The 1 rebound in 21 minutes and -14 don’t help his case, though…

Continuing my look around the league… it seems like teams are getting big…

I mentioned the Magic… they added anthony black to the backcourt… their starting lineup is 6’5, 6’7, 6’10, 6’10, 6’11.

The Sixers are Maxey, Embiid, and an army of 6’8, 6’9 wings.

The Celtics go 6’4, 6’4, 6’7, 6’8, 6’10, 7’2.

We are a little on the short side when it comes to guards and wings. I’d still start IQ w Brunson but I can see why Thibs is afraid to go small.

We’re a pretty good team when Julius Randle isn’t playing disastrously bad basketball. Tough road trip coming up though. If we go 3-2 on that I’d say we did well.

Are the Jets the most penalized team in NFL history? I can barely stomach watching them. Every fucking time they make a good play it gets called back.

Rockets are a nice story but they’ve played 7 of their first 9 games at home, same as the Pacers.

Meanwhile the Pistons paid a shitload of money to Monty Williams yet they’re 2-9 and on track for a Top 5 pick for like the 10th season in a row.

I get that the Rockets have had a bunch of home games but they just beat the Nuggets and have been playing very well. Ime is an excellent coach and FVV is a stabilizing influence. They’ll come back to earth but they are looking pretty good.

I was the one predicting that Houston would be good. I said they would be better than Dallas. I wasn’t joking. I thought they filled their personnel holes and got a good coach (and don’t have their draft pick this year for that matter). And they are, in fact, good. My prediction isn’t on track only because Dallas has a great record, which I didn’t expect. But Dallas has played an easy schedule so far and their winning percentage could get worse.

Meanwhile the Pistons paid a shitload of money to Monty Williams yet they’re 2-9 and on track for a Top 5 pick for like the 10th season in a row.

And yet people insist their pick is “likely to convey”.

Houston’s young players were very good in the preseason, Jabari Smith in particular. He has been good-not-great in the regular season, but they have a good core of young players and it’s looking like they picked a good time to go into hybrid mode and bring in some tough vets.

I’d be pretty excited if I was a fan of that team.

The Jets seemed to outplay the Raiders but the penalties just killed NYJ. Terrible timing on most of them.

The Raiders are mediocre but they’re playing like they believe they can win since they fired the despised Josh McDaniels. I think most Raider fans know we stole a win from a better team tonight.
