The Knicks in 1993 most certainly could’ve and probably should’ve won it all. They had the best record in the East winning 60 games, went 3-1 vs Chicago in the regular season and were up 2-0 on them in the Conference Finals riding a 26 game winning streak at MSG.

I believed this most of my life but now that I can be rational about it it’s pretty clear our guys lacked something between the ears to get it done. I remember game 5 vividly, I think we missed 20 free throws in that game. There was one point we kept getting awarded technicals for illegal defense and every Knick under the sun failed to knock down the FT.

Our guys choked. A lot. I don’t want to run through the list bc we all know it. It’s just what they did.

If Charles Smith had gotten fouled, he would have missed the free throws. If he had scored, we would have lost game 6 in Chicago by 20 points and Jordan would have ripped our heart out in game 7.

We always played w total confidence vs the Heat, though. Ewing was a monster against Mourning, but he shrunk from Hakeem. It was all in his head.

Just for the record, Doogie’s compulsive corrections are as smile-inducing as geo’s fantastical ramblings. It’s all good here.

And I apologize and recognize that this is not guitarblogger, but in search of a sports thing I quite literally (or as Doogie would point out, not literally at all) stumbled upon this extremely unlikely thing. Not sure if it’s for JK or geo, to be honest…

One thing to remember about the Charles Smith misses is that the Bulls scored another basket after that. Granted the defence was not set, but if he scores, the Bulls would still have time to run one set play, and just a hunch, but probably for Jordan.

The idea that an easy miss on the second to last play of game 5 of the conference finals is the reason that the Knicks did not win it all that year does not withstand scrutiny.

and Jordan would have ripped our heart out in game 7.

and although there was no game 7, the next time MJ played at the garden he scored 55.

Arguing about proper etiquette and comportment on a Web 1.0 blog is a big part of what we do here.

“…and although there was no game 7, the next time MJ played at the garden he scored 55”

I was at that one too 🙁

Speaking of etiquette, and re a few comments from yesterday, was it Jowles who used to rip bloggers a new asshole over intimating that Jordan’s ‘break’ from the NBA was a personal choice? I used to really enjoy those rants.

Regarding the idea of Josh Hart as our backup PF this season, this is a very relevant article about Steve Kerr promoting Hart over Brandon Ingram as Team USA’s starting PF:

    https://theathletic.com/4821395/2023/08/31/team-usa-josh-hart-brandon-ingram-steve-kerr-fiba-world-cup/

But first, the lineup change. Kerr made it sound like at least part of the change he made was permanent-permanent, as in, Ingram is going to come off the bench for the rest of the tournament. What Kerr does at the four spot could change eventually, but Hart, who is 6 foot 5, is going to start against a Montenegro team that features four-time NBA All-Star center Nikola Vučević (6-10) and has seven players who are at least 6-8.

“Josh is our leading rebounder, had 12 more last night,” Kerr said, citing Hart’s rebound total against Jordan. “He has a strength and a tenacity to him that sometimes overcomes a height disadvantage. He’s used to guarding bigger guys with all the switching that happens in the NBA, so we go into a game comfortable with Josh as the starting four.”

But there’s a caveat to Kerr’s thinking, because, not only is Montenegro big, but Lithuania is too. Lithuania, like the USA, went undefeated in pool play and is led by the New Orleans Pelicans big man Jonas Valančiūnas and has six players who are at least 6-9.

Obviously, many of these big men will not be as good as the PFs in the NBA, but this should be an interesting proof of concept in the idea for us.

wow, that was indeed amazing raven 🙂

great job josh hart…a couple of days ago i was thinking there’s no way he makes the olympic roster…hali, banchero, reaves and hart are really shining so far this tournament…

Those Knicks teams unfortunately just weren’t good at FT shooting period. The 99-00 teams were excellent at FT shooting but didn’t get to the FT line enough. Actually I believe the 2000-01 team that had Glen Rice lead the NBA in FT shooting. Talk about a miscast player on the Knicks, that season with Glen Rice was such an odd fit.

I remember game 5 vividly, I think we missed 20 free throws in that game. There was one point we kept getting awarded technicals for illegal defense and every Knick under the sun failed to knock down the FT.

Unsurprisingly, my vivid recollection wasn’t that great. We missed 15 free throws (out of 35 attempts). And it was only John Starks and Patrick Ewing who missed the technicals.

We had a 35-23 advantage at the line. Riley had worked the officials hard in the press after 2 losses in Chicago. It worked, but his players couldn’t capitalize.

The lesser euro teams probably do have plenty of guys who could rebound if they were in the NBA but who have other shortcomings that keep them out of the big league.

if spectrum and disney don’t get their shit together by full football season I am going to commit an act of domestic terrorism

    (haha just kidding fbi)

I’ve always blamed that loss on free throw shooting rather than Smith.

I used to blame that loss on the underwear I was wearing. Then I realized that I had a mental illness, which wasn’t the thinking that my underwear was somehow unlucky, but was the construct of blame itself, which is actually a social disorder caused by the ego’s insecure transference of guilt onto a nonproprietary entity.
