For any of you who suffered through last night’s game, how did Jaylen Martin look? He seems like the only genuine prospect on the Vegas roster.

I only watched the “condensed game” on the NBA App,
I’m positive Jaylen Martin will be on the main roster this season at least for some games, he’s a very nice flyer in the UDFA market.

I like Foster Jr. too, but for what I know he isn’t under any kind of contract.

    Do you remember Aamir Simms?
After a year in Paris he’ll play this season for Venezia, in the Italian League.

Meanwhile Willy Hernangomez signed a 3-years contract with Barcelona.

    OAKAAK!

I’ll say in defense of Keels he’s playing out of position at PG (probably by design to see if theres anything there) and more importantly his peripheral numbers look good.

    He has a 3.28 ast:to ratio and averages 6 rebs, 4.7 ast, and a whopping 2.7 stls* per 36

He just can’t score at all

Maybe all counting stats are inflated in SL, but those look good on their face

iirc, his peripheral numbers were great in college for his age too and graded out well on projections for that alone

So maybe we shouldn’t give up on Keels, but boy does it look ugly at times

*3/4 steals csme against the Magic who are 0-3 and turned the ball over nonstop against us

Alan, I just watched last night’s game after recording it. Overall, the Knicks couldn’t shoot but made up for it by getting a lot of turnovers by Orlando. I didn’t think anyone stood out particularly as an obvious find, but Charlie Brown Jr. looked pretty good. But also he’s 26 already. Jaylen Martin had some really nice flashes where he did some NBA level things. I suspect they will keep him. Trevor Keels had a lot of nice passes. The team would pass him the ball whenever they needed a reset and he usually found someone who could take a good shot. But his own shooting was not good. Roby looked to have NBA competency near the basket sometimes, but often didn’t seem involved enough in the action. At least if he was a few feet away from the basket he could shoot and score. This is something I thought Obi wasn’t very good at. A guy named Peterson was a real gunner and made some key shots at the end.

Note that it’s really hard to keep track of who’s who in a summer league game. The announcers are mostly chatting about one basketball thing or another but often don’t mention who got a score or rebound like a dedicated play by play announcer will do and since many of the players are ones I don’t know or haven’t seen play much, it’s often hard for me to figure it out for myself.

Edit: EB, our posts crossed. As you can tell, we agree about Keels.

    Martin looks great to me

He’s got a ways to go. Bulking up would be my main priority for him. He looks like a 19yo playing against grown men… which shouldn’t surprise anyone.

I’ll predict that he’s going to be in the “too good for SL” category 2yrs from now

One other thing: the game went into overtime and they used an Elam ending where the first team to score seven more points won. I didn’t like it as much as I expected too. I don’t know why. The game just didn’t feel like it should have been finished when it actually ended.

Note that it’s really hard to keep track of who’s who in a summer league game. The announcers are mostly chatting about one basketball thing or another but often don’t mention who got a score or rebound like a dedicated play by play announcer

I hate this so much. It was worse last game with Isiah Thomas… as if listening to Thomas wasn’t bad enough, you had to listen non-stop

At least last game I coul make out the arena announcing the scorer part of the time.

I didn’t think anyone stood out particularly as an obvious find, but Charlie Brown Jr. looked pretty good. But also he’s 26 already.

He’ll get a camp invite, maybe he can snag the last roster spot and be our Salvaged Heat Vet (patent pending)

    He’s a good man

Roby looked to have NBA competency near the basket sometimes, but often didn’t seem involved enough in the action.

He seems like a victim of SL. His game isn’t creating and nobody else on the SL Knicks is capable of creating for him.

Supposedly he’s just out there just to rehab an injury

I was also impressed with Martin in stints. He has more fluid athletic ability than most and nice form on his shot. He still needs to learn to play defense, but that will come.

Keels did make some good decisions with the ball (I guess that’s why his plus/minus was so high?) and has good energy on D but looks like a guy who will never be able to shoot… you never know I guess.

Shooting is really the premium skill in today’s nba—ideally you have it at all 5 positions. The Knicks don’t seem to see it that way, but hey outliers happen!

i don’t think anyone on the summer league squad will be in the nba in a couple years…. there’s probably a lot of wishcasting onto martin and considering everyone else sucks and considering his age… things are definitely not over… but he needs a lot of work and projects just don’t usually work out…. and considering how much we devote to development he has next to no shot… there’s not much there anyway…

I have no idea what to think of Martin as a prospect because the OTE is such a blackbox. He’s looked reasonably capable in SL, but that’s a low bar. Occam’s Razor suggests he doesn’t play a significant NBA minute, but I am happy we’re actually using the roster spot to take a flyer on someone we must believe in to some extent.

Foster Jr. actually has an interesting prospect pedigree IMO, but can’t say I’ve been terribly impressed in SL. Still, I’d be happy if we locked him up on a UDFA contract. Given that if you squint you can see a stretch 4 there, what’s in it for him is that there might be more minutes for him here than most other teams.

Keels is a mystery to me. He seems to have gotten the benefit of a lot of doubt so far, kind of like lottery picks do, but he obviously wasn’t. Must have some special aura.

I thought that Keels was much better this year than he was last year in Summer League. He still has to get better at shooting, but he so young he’s still the age of a lot of 2023 draftees. He could improve a lot. DJphan, you could be correct that he will never make it, but I wouldn’t rule it out totally.

And I don’t know if he is getting the benefit of the doubt. He doesn’t have a contract yet, just a $50K guarantee that gives the Knicks the right of first refusal.

Keels is a mystery to me. He seems to have gotten the benefit of a lot of doubt so far, kind of like lottery picks do, but he obviously wasn’t. Must have some special aura.

I don’t know that he has. There’s some stuff that looks good on paper like his rebounding and assist numbers, but he looks terrible on the court.

But he’s still young, and thats a lot of the evaluation. He’s only 4mos older than Wembanyama. He’s 3 yrs younger than 1st round pick Kris Murray. He’s got time to develop.

Brandon Miller was playing against high school students* at the same age Keels was playing against pros in the g-league.

Some players don’t breakout till later, maybe that’s Keels, maybe it’s not. I’m guessing not but on a 2-way with no roster room, you can take risks on 20yo former 5 star recruits with good college metrics

*I assume he was in HS since he was a freshman this past year

The safe money says Martin never makes an NBA roster. I’m betting he does

But don’t take anything I say about SL too seriously tho

I heard Keels is round, but Keels backwards is sleek, so maybe it’s too soon to tell what exactly he’s going to be at this point.

Anybody able to read that NY Post article today on the OG trade taking shape?

Shows pics of RJ and IQ and OG in the photo…

I was reading the NYT this morning and, where their sports section used to be, there was an expanded entertainment section discussing the recent Emmy award nominations. Apparently Ted Lasso is in heated competition for best comedy with Abbot Elementary and The Bear. Now, I gave Ted my usual one episode and when people insisted I give it more I watched another and just couldn’t go further. BUT, I saw the attempted humor and potential charm, if that was your thing. The Bear, however, I watched my episode of and couldn’t believe it was listed under comedy at all. It was pretty miserable to watch without even an attempted joke or situation or anything fun. So, though I’ve never heard of it, I am rooting for Abbot Elementary in this one. Anybody else taking AE sight unseen?

Bear, however, I watched my episode of and couldn’t believe it was listed under comedy at all. It was pretty miserable to watch without even an attempted joke or situation or anything fun.

Yeah it’s an insane classification but the 2nd season is lighter and has more humor in it. Still isn’t a comedy by any means.

For network TV, AE is uniquely excellent. A great ensemble cast and the stories have verisimilitude based on my experiences in urban classrooms.

Why does New York not allow people to bet on NBA Summer League games? I mean, I know only degenerates will bet on Summer League games, but why doesn’t New York allow it?

I hear good things about the bear, but I never got the sense it was a comedy

Oh, it’s a half-hour drama with comedic elements. Whereas I would argue that both Succession and White Lotus are much more structurally, thematically, and, in terms of actual humor content, comedies.

If The Bear is a comedy so is White Lotus. I would say both are dramatic dark comedies. It seems a bit of a stretch to have the bear line up against Abbot Elementary. They are not at all the same type of show but both are great. I haven’t seen the new season but season one was outstanding. I also really liked Abbot and White Lotus. Ted Lasso while not quite as good is aggressively pleasant and I can think of worse things.

I asked an acquaintance who works for an online betting site and he said “NY regulators are very stingy’, whatever that means.

So Jake Fischer is reporting that the Pacers are actively looking for a starting caliber PF. What does that say about the way they perceive Obi?

I asked an acquaintance who works for an online betting site and he said “NY regulators are very stingy’, whatever that means.

Thanks! And yeah, that makes no sense, but thanks for asking!

Different states allow different betting rules

I can bet on college teams but not individual college players

Some places let you bet on college players, some don’t let you bet on college at all (iirc)

I can bet on SL & I guess in NY you can’t unless it was just that sportsbook maybe?

Betting rules vary wildly from state to state. By comparison I believe NJ allows a lot more types of betting with other favorable rules, if I remember what my friend said correctly

Oh yeah, I get different states have different rules, I just can’t figure out how Summer League would be an exception.

Friend of mine hates his brother in law in jersey but figured out if he told his wife they should go visit them that he could place bets on the NFL draft once they got out of the tunnel

And Brian if you are thinking about betting on summer league games you should call 1-877-8-HOPENY

GK, So when we play the Pacers next season, Obi will be guarding RJ? I’m trying to picture it, but it is hard.

And Brian if you are thinking about betting on summer league games you should call 1-877-8-HOPENY

Oh believe me, I’m not interested in it. My brother has become a big gambler, so that’s how I learned about the New York/CT thing. The odd thing about him is that he’s a financial analyst, and his brain is just basically built for online gambling and gaming the system, so he does really well at gambling, and apparently Summer League is one of the easiest places to make money since it is such an inefficient market, so the psychos like my brother can game it really well.

[The Bear is] great… -Ben R

Okay, cool. You are the first person in my, granted small world, to have admitted to watching it let alone liking it. I was very surprised to read it was a likely Emmy winner (not that that’s an indication of it being good, just that it is an indication that people actually watched it).

I clicked on it only because the guy in the icon looked like a young Sean Penn and I miss young Sean Penn, but then I was quickly reminded that young Sean Penn played Jeff Spicoli, and all that the guy from the Bear could do was look stressed out.

The Bear is excellent. It’s just also very stressful, so if you don’t like that sort of stuff, you’ll hate it. I think Alan was the one who likened it to watching a panic attack in real time. So if that sounds too intense, yes, don’t watch it.

psychos like my brother can game it really well.

You don’t have to be psycho, you just have to think of the guy that is most likely to bust and put a lot of money on him as MVP. I made so much money off of Anthony Randolph and Josh Selby that I pay people to watch Knicks games for me now.

[edited to add: oops, I see I forgot to hit submit on my monthly paetron subscription to KB]

The Bear is excellent. It’s just also very stressful, so if you don’t like that sort of stuff, you’ll hate it.

Who watches TV just to feel stressed out? (Never mind, as Knick fans, just pretend I didn’t ask that:)

By psycho, I mean be the type of guy who bets $ on one app for team A, then, if team A builds a big lead, bet $ on another app for team B, knowing it’s Summer League and that each team blows leads repeatedly. Then just keep going back and forth and you’re bound to make money. But who the fuck wants to think like that? I guess it’s fun for him, so fair enough, but I can’t imagine wanting to do that.

Us bettors love to take action on both sides if it guarantees a profit! Hedging can be done in real time, but you have to be quick in identifying arbitrage opportunities and quick on the trigger because the lines shift rapidly.

I bet on summer league too, and yes, it’s a pretty inefficient betting market. I don’t make much money betting basketball since I don’t put a lot in, but I had about 5% return over the course of last season. That’s not amazing, but it’s definitely more fun getting 5% that way than from a bond yield!

“…The Knicks would consider an extension for Quickley around $20 million per year, league sources told HoopsHype. Should Quickley play himself into a higher average annual salary, the Knicks may consider trading him as part of a package to acquire a star player.”

So…the Knicks want to low ball IQ, and if he plays well enough to merit more, which means he’ll be playing really well, they want to trade him in a package to get a star? I really think they just don’t particularly see a future for IQ here.

“…the Knicks currently plan to give Isaiah Roby an opportunity as the primary backup forward…”

Oh, definitely. That’s 100% a true fact. They are going to have Roby as the primary backup power forward and I guess Grimes is going to play, what, left bench then?

You can make a lot of money arbitraging bets!

Who doesn’t want to make a couple extra grand just for watching sports?

My friend paid for a vacation to NYC and a Michelin star restaurant for him and his wife with what he made from NY & NJ sign up promos.

Yeah, it definitely does seem to work out for him, financially, but it’s weird how the guys who tend to be really good at this stuff are also the guys who are already making fine money working in finance like my brother.

So…the Knicks want to low ball IQ, and if he plays well enough to merit more, which means he’ll be playing really well, they want to trade him in a package to get a star? I really think they just don’t particularly see a future for IQ here.

This is what Macri has been strongly implying for a while — specifically, that the FO and Thibs don’t want to play IQ too much with Brunson, and thus don’t feel like they’d be getting enough value out of having Quickley here at his market value. So if he costs what he deserves, they’re better off trading him for someone they believe is a better fit with Brunson.

Agree with that thinking or not, but this seems consistent with what others have said.

Begley and Lowe also seem to suggest that IQ having a poor playoffs kind of soured a few of the folks in the front office on him. I guess I don’t get the concept of paying him $20 million a year, but dumping him if he wants $25 million?

“GK, So when we play the Pacers next season, Obi will be guarding RJ? I’m trying to picture it, but it is hard.”

Can you picture RJ guarding Obi? I’ve always thought Obi was a 3/4 tweener, but Thibs was too stubborn to try him at the 3. We’ll see what Carlisle does. Some matchups could be difficult for him, but I don’t think RJ is one of them.
