Another comeback, another gritty win and winning when many players have an off night is a great sign.

This team has talent*, now they’re gelling, J-Hart acquisition helped Thibs solve some problems (cough, RJ, cough) and, last but not least, no matter how bad they play they usually never quit.

When focused on defense they can go toe to toe with everyone (a 7-game series is a little different though)… and when overconfident they can lose with everyone.

Next: 5th place is one game away so tonight B2B is crucial, the schedule is getting tougher…

    1st
On the back of Porzingis’ blistering start (19 points, 5-5 3FG) the Wizards scored 38 points and, despite Randle (11 points) hitting a couple of circus shot, took a double digits lead at the break (+11).

    2nd
Delon Wright (!) and Kuzma replaced KP as Washington kept raining threes and extended the lead to 19.
The “ice bucket to the face” moment worked, IQ brought some energy, the Knicks went on a 10-0 run, then Kuzma and a dumb ref pissed Julius off and he reacted with Godzilla’s like fury (11 points in the final 2:30) while the Knicks closed the gap and went to the locker room down by only 4.

    3rd
The Knicks jumped out of the gates a different team, Julius picked up where it left off, RJ came to life (just to disappear again, with 2 TOs in back-to-back possessions that lead to a well deserved benching) and we went on an 8-0 run to take the lead. Grimes airballed a momentum-changer open three after a Randle’s steal and then the see-saw started. IQ hit a three to send the Knicks to the last stanza up by 1.

    4th
The benching worked (hooray!) as RJ had 6 points and 1 assist in 1:24 and New York took a 6-points lead (we never lead by more than 6 all night long). Avdija and Kuzma estinguished the fire and the battle went on with Randle hitting back to back “this is my game” threes, but the Wizards weren’t folding in front of their crowd and when a miscommunication between Mitch and Julius let Beal inexcusably alone for a wide open three the game was tied with 1:00 to go.
Then the Little General happened and gave the Knicks the final lead. KP clanked the following three, Randle beat the pressure and found Mitch under the basket, Kuzma stepped on the line and I couldn’t even be mad at IQ and J-Hart missing FTs because the game was on ice and our beloved guys won again.

    Play Of The Game:
    This one’s easy.

4th 0:42 Jalen Brunson makes finger roll layup (NY 111 WAS 109)

The willingness to take it in a night like this tells a lot about JB’s.

    Stats Of The Day
43-34 Knicks’ rebounds margin (12-3 OReb)
    58-32. Knicks’ PiP lead.
    We dominated the paint.

    Randle A+
Tied his career high with a monster offensive game and, after a lackadaisical start on defense, willed the team to the win.
Very unusual statline (only 2 REBs and 2 AST, but 2 STLs and only 1 TOs despite hundreds of possessions and a huge 7-7 from the line).

    Brunson B
At least half a grade higher than he deserves but hitting the clutchest shot in a very bad shooting night (6-20) is the signature of a winning player and 9:1 AST/TO is good.
He can’t get to the line this time (1 FT) and I want to watch him more with Mitch clogging the lane a bit.

    Barrett C
Appears, disappears, appears again. Bench time seems to do him good, it’s up to Thibs now to keep him accountable.
He makes me mad, I don’t know what to say anymore.

    Grimes C+
He started the game trying a pretentious dunk and then retreat in his
defensive corner, where he did his job. The airball-3 was very bad (and not easy to understand).

    Robinson B+
A double-double (10 pts 12 rebs) after a month spent in the workshop? Not bad. A little rusty but it was expected. It’s so good to have him back and with him and I-Hart the center role is well covered.

    IQ A
It’s official, he’s one of the leading candidate for the 6MOTY award and the good news is that his offense is only half of his value.

    Hartenstein B+
10 Boards, 2 STLs and a couple of putbacks. He’s everywhere, not always in the good sense but his rim protection and defense are underrated by many.

    Hart B
We couldn’t expect him to keep shooting like Steph, but he does everything (6 Rebs, 4 Ast, dives on the floor, defense, smart plays) and mayyyybe can keep a fire under RJ’s ass.

    Toppin C
A dunk, a steal and nothing else.

    Thibs A
To quote Strat from the game thread “He’s feeling good about this team and where he has them” and honestly he has the right to be proud, he has done a good job**.
The “never quit” attitude is his trademark and he deserve praise for that.
RJ’s benching kind of worked and he needs to do it again if the kid can’t put together a whole game with the right focus.

    * Even in Siberia
    ** I’m not saying a “perfect” job 😉

Randle’s response to Kuzma’s ‘too small’ dig was, unfortunately, the best thing to happen in my life in a pretty long while…

Someone should insult Randle in every game?

And remind Brunson that he didn’t make the all star game.

Crazy game last night btw Sacramento and LAC.

Very happy with the win. I’d like to not play so many close games and I’d like to win by 12. But failing that, this is fine too. They came out so hot there was no other way to do it.

Glad also to survive the rare bad Brunson game. Haven’t seen one of those in so long.

Thanks Max for excellent recap and grades. Loved the game and real come back was a pleasure. Very happy for Randle who was candid in his interview about the mental piece. Hopefully everyone on the team will heed his words.

Was at the game. A little “gift” to myself for my “26th” birthday on the 11th. However, I am now in the hopsicle awaiting surgery to move my heart back from my throat and into my chest, and to lower my blood pressure lol. I jest..but man did that game have some crazy ups and downs. Even though we were down in the 1st, I REALLY enjoyed KP & JR going shot for shot. It was crazy! I definitely left the arena feeling like this team is going to be a problem in the EC the rest of the way. The simple fact that Brunson was off, RJ was erratic, and Randle was not hitting the boards at all- and we still came away with a comeback from 19 down to take the game in a hostile environment was great. It was such a weird, yet expected game coming off of the all star break. How we play tonight once the rust is off should be a better foretelling of things to come. But next week tho! THAT is where we make our statement. Hopefully Mitch has all the rust off by then. I’m still turnt from last night lol..I will now attempt to sleep until game time..wish me luck

I have to give some special props to IQ because he’s turned into a player I like very much. I was skeptical of his ceiling and his value to the team, even though I always liked him, but he’s been a guy who I really trust to be on the court in important moments.

176-175? Damn I should have stayed up last night.

The Wizards, when healthy, are a pretty good team. So that’s a nice W, especaily with Brunson having a bad night. Randle was unbelievably good.

Love that win. Great cap and grades, Max. I’m so glad IQ is steady of late, and doubly glad he didn’t get traded. Keep the train goin’. Now I just need a crazy breakout game from Obi to make my (irrational) hope come true.

What a fun win last night! If they can still make it work on nights when Brunson’s shot isn’t falling, this team is going to be able to stand with anyone on nights when they’re firing on all cylinders

Probably the best time for a B2B, no? Especially against two beatable opponents? Everyone is well rested and we need to get reps in before the upcoming very challenging stretch. I’d love to take at least one of these games vs. Celts…this sounds a bit crazy but I actually think we match up as well against them as pretty much anyone.

Agreed on Boston, Z-man. I can’t imagine us winning a playoff series against them, but we’ve got Grimes and Hart to at least make life annoying for Brown and Tatum, and they don’t have great answers for Randle. Smart vs Brunson is kind of the key to any given game between the two teams.

Ha Geo, was wondering if you were getting weather.

My concern with the Celts is the inherent missing link with the team — no real length on the wing, in this case to defend Tatum. 6’4″ (Hart) or 6’5″ (Grimes) won’t really cut it against a 6’8″ version of KD who can rise up and get his shot whenever he wants, and while Barrett is 6’6″, he’s not showing he can guard a garden hose right now.

That’s wild, Geo. I postponed my trip out west. No need to fly across the country for the same weather I get here.

I love the snow, Geo, but i hope it isn’t causing you trouble. No one around for a snow battle?

    Per Ian Begley

NBA says Knicks @ Kings on 3/9 will now be on TNT and Nets @ Bucks on 3/9 will no longer be on the network. Golden State at MEM on 3/9 will still be on TNT but tip off will change to 730 ET

Wow. How things have changed for the Knicks this season (and the Kings, for that matter).

    Z-
There were alot of Knicks fans there. DC’s teams are weird. At least NBA & NFL- I usually see quite a few Knicks fans there when I go, but this time it felt like there were more than usual. There’s also a TON of Cowboys fans in that area too. One thing about the Wizards fans, once they get into it- the place is lit. It wasn’t packed..but it felt like it

Just an addendum to the big scoring game last night. The last time someone scored more was in 1983 in a game between the Pistons and Nuggets. They scored 369 points and hit two three pointers between them. Which feels insane.
