ESPN.com: New York Knicks trade up to get No. 23 pick in draft from Utah Jazz

It’s not much of a news story, but I figure if the Knicks make an actual trade, it probably should get its own thread.

Even if it’s such an odd little, sort of nothing burger move like this one.

From Woj:

The New York Knicks are moving up in Wednesday’s NBA draft, acquiring the Utah Jazz’s pick at No. 23 in exchange for the No. 27 and No. 38 selections.

The Knicks now hold the No. 8 and No. 23 picks in Wednesday’s draft, the first for the team under new president of basketball operations Leon Rose.

The Jazz will also send the Knicks the draft rights to 2008 second-round pick Ante Tomic, 33, who isn’t expected to join the NBA.

I have no idea who they might be targeting at 23. I read a report saying they did it because OKC wants Isaiah Stewart- whom I like for the team. How much depends on what they do at 8. I am patiently waiting. Feels like we might get 2 contributors out of this draft. I really hope Jalen Smith is there, but the last mock I saw had him going around 14. Should be fun to watch tonight

DSJ still has that much value, huh? I would like that trade very much

for posterity… here’s my top 25(since we now have a late 1st this year)… not much has changed from my earlier boards… there’s a bunch of solid guys this year that can be had all the way into the second rd although it’s a bit thin on total talent….

1. Anthony Edwards
2. Onyeka Okongwu
3. Killian Hayes
4. James Wiseman
5. Kira Lewis
6. Aaron Nesmith
7. Tyrese Haliburton
8. Jalen Smith
9. Devon Dotson
10. Devin Vassell
11. Obi Toppin
12. Tyrell Terry
13. LaMelo Ball
14. Paul Reed
15. Patrick Williams
16. Desmond Bane
17. Tyler Bey
18. Malachi Flynn
19. Payton Pritchard
20. Cassius Stanley
21. Jahmius Ramsey
22. Vernon Carey
23. CJ Elleby
24. Jordan Nwora
25. Isaiah Joe

Hayes, Lewis and Haliburton would be solid gets and i’m partial to the former two since they had really good ball skills… if we keep the latter pick there are more than enough interesting names to make that pick count for something and Jalen Smith is probably one to watch if he falls that far….

let’s just hope that we don’t do anything stupid this time… it’s really tough to recover from 3 complete whiffs in the lottery…. and we’ll know immediately how good this front office is depending on how they maneuver this draft….

1. Hayes
2. Ball
3. Edwards
4. Haliburton
5. Okongwu
6. The Pokumon
7. Vassell
8. Avdija
9. Okoro
10. Wiseman
11. Hampton
12. Toppin
13. Terry
14. Dotson
15. Kira
16. Jalen Smith
17. Patrick Williams
18. Isaiah Stewart
19. Tre Jones
20. Jahmi’us Ramsey
21. Desmond Bane
22. Josh Green
23. Paul Reed
24. Trevelin Queen
25. Xavier Tillman
26. Aaron Nesmith
27. Zeke Nnanji
28. Vernon Carey Jr.
29. Grant Riller
30. Cole Anthony

2nd round/UDFA interesting guys: CJ Elleby, Mason Jones, Reggie Perry, Isaiah Joe, Skylar Mays, Kaleb Wesson

swift teams do not trade down 5 picks (or 4 picks or 3 picks) in the mid first round for $5m and dsj has no real trade value

My first round (non-Knicks) big board:
1. Ball
2. Okongwu
3. Hayes
4. Edwards
5. Hali
6. Xavier Tillman
7. Kira Lewis Jr.
8. Poku
9. Wiseman
10. Devon Dotson
11. Obi (there’s 31 here–RJ is 12–realize I forgot him and didn’t want to retype every digit)
11. RJ Hampton
12. Avdija
13. Desmond Bane
14. Vassell
15. Malachi Flynn
16. Tyrell Terry
17. Tyler Bey
18. Jahmi’us Ramsey
19. Isaiah Stewart
20. Cole
21. Patrick Williams
22. Josh Green
23. Jalen Smith
24. Saddiq Bey
25. Paul Reed
26. Vernon Carey Jr.
27. Tre Jones
28. Achiuwa
29. Aaron Newsmith
30. Daniel Oturu

Ummm… I know we’re not in position to draft him, but is this what you’d want to hear from Anthony Edwards if we were?

DSJ makes 5.6m this year- no one is taking him + 5m to move back in the draft. Even if he were to turn his career around you’d have to pay him next year. I can’t imagine anyone wanting him other than as a minimum salary pickup if the Knicks waive him.

let’s just hope that we don’t do anything stupid this time…

Should be the NY Knicks marketing slogan – “The Knicks – let’s just hope that we don’t do anything stupid this time”

I’m hoping they use the $5 million cash and DSJ to move up another 5 or 6 spots from #23. The rumor is they might deal DSJ tonight.

This would not be enough to move up one spot

@JCMacriNBA
Gentle reminder: don’t sleep on Patrick Williams as a candidate if the Knicks decide to trade up. He has fans in the organization and have heard his name mentioned today.

I’m… so tired, you guys.

Macri says “Don’t sleep on Patrick Williams” if we move up. Now that would be Knicksy.

I am now so here for the Knicks trading up to draft Patrick Williams. That would be…amazing.

Brian, please beg Mike to give the rest of us image functionality so I can bring all my favorite masochistic gifs into this discussion?

Time is a flat circle when you root for this team.

You can sleep on Robbie Cano.

Great for the Mets I think. Or can they only use that money within the organization? On some level I have to respect a guy who wants to hit better so much he will risk 24 million to do it.

[Anthony Edwards] says he doesn’t think about being the first player taken. He’ll be ready when the time comes, but “other than that, I don’t even care.”

“To be honest,” he says, “I can’t watch basketball.”

He retells the story about the first time he dunked and how it signaled to him that he was talented and could accomplish something he might not have been able to in football, which was his first love. So that’s the direction he went, simple as that, hanging up his cleats. “That’s all I needed to see,” he says.

So when after that did he get into basketball?

“I’m still not really into it,” he says. “I love basketball, yeah. It’s what I do.”

He’s not entirely convincing. He says if he were drafted by the NFL tomorrow, he’d let basketball go. “Because you can do anything on the field,” he explains. “You can spike the ball. You can dance. You can do all type of disrespectful stuff.” In the NBA, he says, “you can’t do any of that. You’ll get fined.”

He goes on to say that he’s an aspiring rapper. He’s already recorded a few tracks with his older brother Bubba. So, like Damian Lillard? “But I really can rap,” he says. “Dame, talking about — I don’t know what he’s talking about. I’m rapping like Lil Baby.” He says he won’t release any songs until he’s established in the NBA.

God damn! We’ve got a future superstar here, folks!

I don’t even know where to start. Lil Baby? Lil Fuckin Baby?

Alan, what is the right gif when THCJ posts something that someone put up in the last thread 8 hours ago?

It’s a hilarious quote though. Just a classic, pay me less money please.

i don’t know, that $5mm could be useful. remember when Sarver sold luol deng for $3mm? all it takes is one over leveraged owner.

***“I’m still not really into it,” he says…. “It’s what I do.”***

Well, he could go the way of Andre Agassi, treat it like a job, and still be great…

…or he can go the way of Larry Sanders, treat it as a waste of time, and quit to be an artist…

Or, be somewhere in between, and be good but not great, like a zillion guys that have come before him.

thenamestsam:
Macri says “Don’t sleep on Patrick Williams” if we move up. Now that would be Knicksy.

I am driving the Patrick Williams bus but please for the love of god don’t go leapfrogging teams to get him.

Alan: I’m… so tired, you guys.

Well, at least if we draft Patrick Williams we won’t have to worry about if our new front office is good or not because we’ll already know they’re idiots.

Hahaha….

Posting on a website built for 2004 is a big part of what we do here.

It would be fun if you could easily post gifs but the primordial nature of this site is a big plus in my book.

edit: I do like those gifs

If we didn’t allow .gifs during the bargnani era, we will never, ever allow them…

I am currently letting an amateur scouting type I know talk me into Patrick Williams.

Guys, why do we do this to ourselves?

FWIW, here is the upshot of Sam Vecenie’s scouting report on Williams:

Williams has risen in the minds of teams throughout the draft process for a couple of reasons. First, they really went back through the tape after the stoppage and saw all of the defensive potential and offensive flashes. Even though he didn’t start and play a crazy amount of minutes, those are real tools that teams think they can continue to develop. Second, the NBA playoffs happened and teams continued to realize how important it is to have secondary players that can play high-level defense and play with great feel offensively. Williams ticks those boxes at a very high level. As long as Williams knocks down 3s at a 35 to 37 percent level off the catch, he’s going to be a really high-level player for a long time. There’s a somewhat low-likelihood outcome of star upside, given his feel as a passer, his pull- up shot, and his comfort as a ballhandler in advantage situations. But I think he probably settles in more as a starting caliber 4 who helps winning teams with defense and playmaking.

I dunno why we wouldn’t just stay at 8 and take Okoro or Vassell, but…

JK47:
Great trade, Brodie!

BTW, it is GREAT news for the Mets. They don’t have to pay Cano for this coming year, can move McNeil to 2b full time, etc.

What an awful, short-sighted trade that was.

Alan:
FWIW, here is the upshot of Sam Vecenie’s scouting report on Williams:

Patrick Williams could be anything, even Devin Vassell!!

And now I’ve opened up a can of worms where Brian won’t be able to do his day job because he’ll be too busy embedding all our stupid gifs. Even if there is no better approximation of Knicks fandom than this one.

Alan: There’s a somewhat low-likelihood outcome of star upside, given his feel as a passer, his pull- up shot, and his comfort as a ballhandler in advantage situations.

Why the F anyone would anyone draft that at 8, much less trade up for it? “Somewhat low-likelihood outcome of star upside”? Hard pass.

The Zach Randolph gif where he air balls a 3 pointer with 16 seconds on the shot clock most accurately summed up the previous ten years at the time, and nothing has changed since then, so I nominate that one.

(ps– it’s strangely fun to describe a gif like it’s the log-line of a movie. More fun than it is to actually post a gif, I think, now that I’ve done it. I vote NO on allowing gifs here)

If we’re posting Bargnani clips, then it’s clearly him jumping up to defend a shot that 10 feet away from him.

Also, I motion for Alsep to be the only one with gif power

Z: (ps– it’s strangely fun to describe a gif like it’s the log-line of a movie. More fun than it is to actually post a gif, I think, now that I’ve done it. I vote NO on allowing gifs here)

It might also cost him a spot in Cooperstown, but he may not care about that.

All I’m reading is that the Mets now have $20.25m more that they can now spend in free agency. Maybe heavily frontload a deal to a guy like Realmuto, Springer, etc., or an additional one year deal to one or two guys.

Pick 23 puts us around Poku territory. He is probably abut my only draft wish list item at the moment

I saw a headline about Robbie Cano testing positive and I was like ‘shit, I hope he recovers okay’

I just wanted to say that I do have regrets over the fact we didn’t have gifs in the Bargs era, it was such a huge missed opportunity.

Knicks let’s just not do stupid things!

i was gonna post how weird it was that bogdan would agree to a meh salary without access to the full rfa market

I think poku is gone before 23… terry might be there

Yeah I think he goes late teens, but hoping a few teams pass. Wishful thinking potentially.

I think both Terry and Poku are gone by 23. Both have been climbing draft boards, supposedly.

Boy oh boy, things are about to get messy in Milwaukee. Sam Amick reports that the Kings-Bucks trade is in peril because no one ever actually got Bogdanovic to agree to go to Milwaukee.

For a moment, at least, Coach Bud gets to experience what it would have been like to work for the Knicks, after all.

@MattBabcock11
The Mavs and the Thunder are discussing a trade that would send Danilo Gallinari to Dallas in a sign-and-trade and the 18th pick to OKC, per sources.

Even with KP getting load-managed, hard to imagine an otherwise-healthy Mavs team with Luka and Gallo not making the playoffs, which makes that 2021 pick less valuable.

Woj: The Sixers are trading Al Horford and a first-round and second-round pick to the Thunder for Danny Green, sources tell ESPN.

Not as big a haul for the team receiving Horford as I expected, though he might actually fill a need on OKC that he wouldn’t on the Knicks. Either way, dear lord OKC has a lot of picks and I wish would actually get in on the bad contract sweepstakes once in our lifetime.

I will not be awake during the draft, so I will see what happened tomorrow. Here are my guesses for the top 8:

1) Lamelo Ball
2) Deni Advija
3) James Wiseman
4) Anthony Edwards
5) Obi Toppin
6) Isaac Okoro
7) Stephen Curry
8) Jordan Hillikina-Knoxgnani

I hope we get it right this time. If not, we can always debate for years whether if our prospect improves his 3pt% next season next to a floor-spacing, switchable, gravity-pulling black hole, then he will be worth of a roster spot, which it is always fun. Good night!

Yeah, Morey is a wizard. The picks aren’t a huge deal for a contender to give up, Green will be useful for them, and this gives them so much more financial flexibility to fix/modernize that roster.

Terrance Ferguson was thrown into the deal for Horford by OKC. Good trade for both sides, though idk what OKC intends to do with Big Al

Danny Green’s dreams of playing with the #5 pick in the 2027 draft have been squashed.

Good thing the Knicks moved so quickly to lock down a head of basketball operations before the season ended!

Karnisovas is also looking like a breath of fresh air for the Bulls.

If this happens, I may have to consider moving to Dallas.

Oh my god, that Bargnani gif is even better than I remembered it. The ball hits him in the head at the end as if some fan caught it and threw it back at him with intent to kill.

Even with KP getting load-managed, hard to imagine an otherwise-healthy Mavs team with Luka and Gallo not making the playoffs, which makes that 2021 pick less valuable.

Dallas gets to have Luka and Gallo? The world is way too unfair to us.

ptmilo:
if presti flips horford for picks at the deadline he replaces jerry west as the logo

I get what OKC is doing, but at certain point there has to be some diminishing returns on all those picks. Who the hell wants Horford given what they are doing?

Yeah that seems very light for OKC and I say that as someone who thinks it’s possible to rehabilitate Horford’s value, but this is less draft capital than I would have expected for taking Horford into space and I would’ve thought Danny Green still had some positive value. He couldn’t hit a shot in the playoffs and had a little bit of a down year overall but he’s not so old that I’d assume he’s fallen off a cliff. He can play 30 solid minutes a game for them and that’s huge.

Horford and Adams are even more redundant together than Horford and Embiid, since at least Embiid has an outside game. I wonder what kind of market there would be for Adams, given the way the game is evolving away from big men like the two that OKC has now.

Dallas also gets two injury prone bigs that may or may not be healthy for the post season to me it’s a another gamble by Cuban that could backfire.

Doncic, Porzingis, and Gallinari… it’s a virtual who’s who of players from east of the 10th meridian.

***this is less draft capital than I would have expected for taking Horford into space***

Horford has a descending contract that is only partially guaranteed in its last year.

of course the picks have diminishing marginal value to okc but they are the most fungible nba assets and they will have trade value. if they are really clever they might even be able to package their marcus morris loot with their willy hernangomez loot to move from 8 to 5 one year and take someone who would have been there at 8.

Alan:

I think they were already looking to move Adams. This makes is more likely, but I have no idea who might want him and for what. Personally, I think the Celtics could use him, but I’m not sure what they can give up.

Wow..so Philly got rid of Horford and picked up a good shooter(past season not withstanding) without attaching the assets everyone thought it would take to pull it off! I like that trade. I am of the belief that Green caught the yips playing for the Lakers with LeBron level pressure around him. Odd for a former champion, but I think he’ll rebound in Philly. But holy crap does that open up the floor there! They will most likely slide Harris to the 4 and play Green at the 3. I can’t wait to see them play Milwaukee

Does swapping Horford for Westbrook make any sense? I don’t think Hou does it because, wow does that look bad, but in theory it makes some sense. You give Hou a big to work with. Steven Adams isn’t redundant.

All I’m reading is that the Mets now have $20.25m more that they can now spend in free agency. Maybe heavily frontload a deal to a guy like Realmuto, Springer, etc., or an additional one year deal to one or two guys.

Oh wow, it didn’t really dawn on me that they wouldn’t have to pay Cano’s salary this year. Yeah, this works out nicely. Cano is a redundant player anyway, there are definitely way better ways to spend that $20M.

Gotta get a GM hired soon.

Conspiracy theory: Bucks leaked this because it getting out that they had a fully agreed upon sign and trade like a week before free agency even begins was sure to draw some scrutiny from the league office. This report is basically “Breaking: Bucks did not tamper with Bogdan, Bucks say”.

“Breaking: Bucks did not tamper with Bogdan, Bucks say”

this is a pretty good conspiracy theory

I mean, to be fair to Rose, he literally has nothing to work with (even one of our two foundational pieces looked like shit).

Sure the Sixers might have liked a straight Horford dump with us, but they will sure prefer a dump where they get two really useful players back a lot more.

Our cupboard is pretty empty. Which is why I don’t like consolidating picks at this point. But I don’t blame Rose for not getting player-trades done, at least not right now.

of course the picks have diminishing marginal value to okc but they are the most fungible nba assets and they will have trade value.

I get that, but it seems to me like at this point adding Horford is more of a negative than adding the extra picks since they already own half the draft for the next few years. 🙂 If I were them, I would probably stick with Adams (who is still only 27) and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and start trying to add quality players via draft and by using those excess draft assets to trade for young quality when opportunities present themselves.

Like ThenameStam, I’ve made the case that we don’t have that many roster spots for draft picks. If we kept number 38, we’d almost certainly pick a player who needs to be in G-league to develop. So then you probably have to cut someone in G-League. If Knicks Management likes who we have in G-League, maybe they think there won’t be a place for the 38th pick. I don’t know who’s available, but I can imagine thinking that Wooten and Iggy, and maybe some other players are better prospects than whoever I would pick at 38th. So then there’s no downside to giving up number 38 to move up in the draft.

whoa, posts are flying in fast and furious…love the frenetic energy…today may be just ideal for lurking…this though – did catch my eye:

Should be the NY Knicks marketing slogan – “The Knicks – let’s just hope that we don’t do anything stupid this time”

that pretty sums up how i feel all the time when it comes to the knicks…

I’m pretty surprised at the low cost it took to dump Horford. I guess GMs agree with Stam that he has a shot to rehabilitate his value.

Still, Presti continues to be a wizard and it’s demoralizing to compare our situation to OKC’s. They are both presently better than us and have, like, three times as many picks going forward.

The problem with trying “hybrid” rebuilds is other teams don’t have to do the same thing!

Still, Presti continues to be a wizard and it’s demoralizing to compare our situation to OKC’s. They are both presently better than us and have, like, three times as many picks going forward.

Take away Paul, Schroder and Gallo and the Thunder aren’t that much better than the Knicks.

Huh. That’s still very sad to say.

Bad kind of Woj bomb:

Golden State G Klay Thompson will undergo testing within the next few days on a leg injury suffered in a workout in Southern California today, sources tell ESPN. The severity of the injury is unclear. Thompson missed the 2019-2020 season with a torn ACL in his left knee.

The Sixers are also getting Terrance Ferguson, which is a nice addition, as well (and, you know, the whole Horford/Ferguson issue is now avoided). The Sixers are throwing in the rights to a European point guard that I could see Presti bringing over soon.

it’s frightening to think about doing a deal with either Presti or Griffin; but, right now they each have a pretty decent point guard on their roster that we could use…

Horford is capable of playing better than he played for the 76ers, but I don’t see the point of OKC taking him when they already have Adams (who is only 27) unless they are going to trade Adams for someone reasonably young that fits better to be part of this rebuild. That’s the only way to try to rebuild Horford’s value so you can move him eventually.

IMO, Adams and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander would not be such bad start to their rebuild.

If they going so extreme as to trade Adams, try to rebuild Horford’s value this year, and then trade him, and turn themselves into a dumpster fire with more picks than God, we’ll probably be discussing how good they are in 2030. To me, everything they did was sensible until this Horford move, but they may have something in mind that makes sense.

I really hope Klay isn’t hurt, but unless they pick Wiseman and he turns out to be a rim-running Towns, they’re not going to plow through the West like in years past. They have the makings of a 50-win team.

Presti is really making up for that whole “we drafted 3 MVPs and lost all of them with one Finals appearance to show for it” thing.

I don’t get the Knicks panic.

We brought in a new management team than includes Walt Perrin who has a pretty good draft record. They have players in mind that they think made it worthwhile to consolidate and move up to 23 and they may have someone in mind they think may not be available at #8 that they would like to grab above them. You either trust their talent evaluation or you don’t. If this was Mills/Perry/Fizdale you might have to talk me off the roof. But let’s see how this shakes out before we assume the worst. I think we have a few smart guys now.

The Rockets are purchasing Detroit’s 2021 second-round pick — via the Lakers — for $4.6M, sources tell ESPN.-Woj

When was the last time the Knicks bought a 2nd round pick? For less than $5mil they should be buying one each year.

Edit: Didn’t realize the pick was for the NEXT draft. Point still stands tho.

Houston is trading Trevor Ariza and the No. 16 pick tonight to Detroit for a future first-round pick, sources tell ESPN. The deal gives the Rockets – a hard-capped team — the freedom to use their mid-level exception in free agency.

Maybe the Knicks are still in the VanVleet sweepstakes, but I assume we’d have to overpay a bit to get him out of Toronto.

The Klay news sucks. Wonder if that changes their draft plans from “trade the pick for a veteran no matter what” to them taking Ball or Edwards as the guy to whom Steph can hopefully pass the torch as he ages.

Ardbeg Ten Years Old is revered around the world as the peatiest, smokiest, most complex single malt of them all. Yet it does not flaunt the peat; rather it gives way to the natural sweetness of the malt to produce a whisky of perfect balance.
