So Anthony Davis has officially asked for a trade, per Woj. That’s going to be very interesting.
The Celtics can’t trade for him now, so that’s a very telling sign that Davis probbaly doesn’t want to go to Boston anyway. It really should put the Lakers in the front seat, but they would have to build the trade in a way where it allows for them to keep one max slot for next summer, which is possible but would require them to part with possibly all of Ball, Kuzma and Ingram.

Davis is actually doing New Orleans and himself a favor. If he waited for his free agency to come up, then New Orleans would get less for him in a trade. And this way he might get out earlier.
It actually works to trade KP and THJ for AD. I want to keep KP, but I would do the trade.

Masai Ujiri is going to sell out in order to pair Lowry with Leonard and Davis. Boston’s hands are tied unless they offer Irving, and New Orleans wouldn’t agree because Kyrie would definitely be leaving in the summer.
I could see something like Anunoby, Siakim, Valanciunas, Norman Powell, and a 2021 unprotected 1RP for Anthony Davis and Wesley Johnson. The other team I’d watch in this? Portland because they can offer McCollum (signed through 2021) and Nurkic (signed through 2022), this year’s first, and a 2021 1st. It’s the kind of “pre agency” move teams in less desired markets like OKC and Toronto made to put themselves in position to get a premier talent.
The Pelicans would be inclined to do business with anybody but the Lakers, and it’s not like teams are falling over themselves to get a chance at Lonzo Ball and Brandon Ingram. The Lakers have to offer the house, but I don’t think the house gets it done. Portland, Toronto, and maybe Dallas and Brooklyn should all have their offers considered before New Orleans does business with the Lakers.

Davis only said that he wants to be traded for a team that contends right away, which well, discounts the Knicks. He still has one more year in his deal after this one so he’s very good value even for a team that’s not an immediate contender, but the price should be so high that it will scare away teams that can’t reliably think they’ll re-sign him.
This is why I’m confused at the largely owner-fueled outrage about “pre-agency.” Do these guys really not understand the massive favor being done? If New Orleans had it their way, would they really let a generational talent walk for nothing?
If I’m the Raptors, I’m going all in and offering anything the Pelicans ask for. Pairing Kawhi and Davis is the best chance they’ll ever have at having a shot at GSW, and also furthers their chance at keeping Kawhi. It would hurt to trade away Siakam because he’s so good, but the other pieces are not that important and Davis + Kawhi is truly a fantastic pairing. A Lowry / Green / Leonard / Ibaka / Davis lineup would be insanely good.
Siakam, Wright, OG, Valanciunas or Ibaka to make money work, and a first is honestly a pretty solid package that I have to think Toronto would be willing to offer.
KP + Lee + any combination of our young guys (say, Knox and Mitch) would also get it done under the cap, so long as we’re fantasizing. (Not that he’s coming here under any circumstance.) This one’s gonna be fascinating. The timing of it knocks Boston out of the mix, unless Ainge calls up the Pels and makes a godfather offer that he swears he’ll stick with this summer. The Lakers’ young guys don’t look as promising as they once did, and also is a LeBron + AD + scrubs roster enough to play with Golden State? (Okay, maybe it is; the assets are the bigger issue.) Rich Paul says AD wants to go to a place where he can compete for a title over the long haul, so the team that gets him needs to have:
1)Enough trade assets to make it worth New Orleans’ while to trade him now rather than waiting for Boston’s hands to be untied;
2)Enough remaining talent after any realistic trade that would allow AD to compete for a title, rather than replicating the New Orleans roster mess in a new location; and
3)Be in a place he actually wants to play.
Toronto probably qualifies for the first two, but would he want to be there long-term?

I wonder if Pels will go into rebuild or want to stay competitive. If rebuild, maybe Holiday will be available. Do you want him? What would you give up? Mitch/KP/Holiday/Frank would be an awesome defensive unit.
If he wants to go to a team that contends right away, that’s not us. But in terms of dark horses, I wouldn’t rule out the Clippers. They are pretty good and would definitely be contenders if they got him and didn’t have to strip themselves bare to do it.
The Pelicans might want to wait to try to get Zion
The thing is that if Boston wants Davis now they have to convince the Pelicans to wait until the offseason, and why would the Pelicans do that unless every other offer is terrible? (And they shouldn’t be).
I think it’s more likely that the Pels will be anxious to trade him now, to kickstart their rebuild as fast as possible. There’s no point in keeping him and not even going to the playoffs this year.
It’s extremely remote no matter what, but whether you agree or not, there is a 0% chance Davis would come to NY if KP is going out as part of the deal. It would probably have to include this year’s 1st rounder, Knox, and salary (maybe even Robinson).
The probability of another star wanting to join the Knicks if Davis is here skyrockets. Wouldn’t matter if KP were here. KD’s gotta like that. Kawhi’s people will push him to Knicks. The main problem is KP would fight a trade to NO. Would KP take the QO and risk losing tens of millions of dollars if he suffers another major injury? Would Pels call his bluff?
BTW Enes expiring money could be real handy if Pels don’t want to take on long-term salary.
If Toronto really wants AD, they have to keep Siakam and instead offer multiple unprotected 1RPs. You’re not winning a championship with Kawhi + AD alone (especially since they’re both somewhat injury-prone and you’ve gutted your bench to acquire AD)–Siakam is literally the second best player on the Raptors. So you need to sweeten the pot with more 1RPs, which hurts, but if you’re serious about competing you pull the trigger without blinking.
0% chance he’s coming to the Knicks. Maybe in FA if KP looks like a superstar and our youth develops well. But he’s definitely not agitating for a trade to New York.

Embiid and AD would be a pretty spicy frontcourt. Not sure it’s optimal but I think they win the East.
Siakam is awesome but I think New Orleans demands him in any deal with Toronto and if push comes to shove you have to do it, right? I’m a huge Siakam fan but the difference between a borderline all-star and an annual MVP candidate is still pretty large.
Anunoby and Wright aren’t doing a ton for Toronto this year anyway, though I still like them as pieces going forward. So it’s really a Siakam + JVal/Ibaka for AD swap in terms of the implication on the 2018-2019 season. I think that undoubtedly makes Toronto significantly better.
You can’t bet against Masai. But it isn’t good to bet against the weather in Santa Monica either.
Raptors and Lakers are the only teams with the pieces to make it happen. Boston is fucked by the Rose rule (ha ha) or I’d consider them front-runners. We all know they’d find a way to turn Jaylen Brown, Terry Rozier, and Gordon Hayward’s good leg with a couple nebulous firsts into a guy with a 9.0 BPM and anecdotally incredible defense.
Toronto would at least have to give up Siakam, who is not AD but is an outstanding player and only improving. (Trading him could bite them a la James Harden to the Rockets, but whatever.)
The Lakers would benefit most from a trade, as they have very few high-production assets. According to VORP, the trio of Ball, Kuz and Ingram have combined for 2.7 wins against replacement this year. They’d have to do some weird positionless basketball though, as they’d be pretty damn thin if they had to give up all three.
