  1. it’s so odd that taj gets like 80% of his field goal attempts in the first six minutes of every game…

  2. Yo, Clyde is out of his mind sportin’ tonight. AMAZING

Yep, saw it Clyde So Fly! Fire!

  3. I miss Gallo.

Watching Mitch, I totally understand why :Portis and Gibson play over him.

  4. Can we go back in time and keep Gallinari?

  5. Look, when you have the chance to trade a guy for Melo and that guy goes on to have a better career than Melo, well, no regrets….

  6. Game might be difficult to win if we can’t hit a three

And if Knox misses open dunks

  7. I like Payton.
    Randle tho must go.
Don’t seem to fit with the youngsters.

  8. This Duncan Robinson guy is something. Just broke the Heat record for threes in a season.

  9. Owen:
This Duncan Robinson guy is something. Just broke the Heat record for threes in a season.

I just wish we had a guy even named Jordan Pippen this season who could shoot 3s!

  10. Elfrid, Reggie, Julius, Taj, and RJ on the floor. Please be mindful to their deliberate freezing out of RJ Barrett.

  11. If we manage to get back on this game I’ll open an expensive champagne.

  12. Glad they’re not playing Mitch. That 100% shooting thing is one of those false all-in-one stats that show nothing.

Anyone chanting ‘Sell the team!” yet?

  13. I don’t know how you can watch these games and not think “if you put some real basketball players around Mitch and RJ you might have something.”

  14. Maybe we promised okc this game to get CP3…
Otherwise we would have crushed em.

  15. We’re getting crushed and Elfrid Payton almost has a triple double. I hate it here.

  16. Chris Paul is still pretty nasty. Watching him throw oops to Noel does make you think, maybe we could accept one less first rounder….

Imagine if we could draft a player like that out of college.

  17. Also…

Fan courtside at Madison Square Garden said Chris Paul has ‘do the right thing’ written on one of his sneakers tonight as OKC plays the Knicks. For the younger crowd, ‘Do the Right Thing’ is a Spike Lee film.

  18. DRed:
Chris isn’t going to want to be traded to this pack of losers

Maybe it’s his childhood dream like Taj’s.

  19. Chris Paul – a player who makes other players better

Julius Randle – a player who makes other players grimace

  20. I’m telling you all, I’m buying Lonzo Ball stock and I’m keeping it. His shooting is coming along now that he fixed the mechanics and he almost had a triple double against the Heat in a win. Ingram shot 4-20 so not all was great for the Pels, but they’re becoming a pretty dangerous team.

  22. I guess we’re all kinda desensitized at this point, but how the hell is LeBron still able to do shit like this? 37/8/7 with 3 steals against the best team in the league and a great defense, on a day he shot 1/7 from 3. He’s 35 and he’s still the best player on the court every time he decides he wants to try hard enough, this should not be possible.

  23. Man I wish Chris Paul’s price tag wasn’t so high..or that we weren’t aggressive in trying to get him earlier- before he raised his trade value. It’s ridiculous how at age 35 and barely 6′- he controls the game so well and is so effective in today’s league. I don’t know how much longer he can keep it up, but I’d be all in on pursuing him if he didn’t make eleventy million trillion dollars for the next few years. He may very well fall off a cliff next season, he may not. But the way he elevated OKC this season clearly shows why we need a good PG.

    Tyrese Haliburton for president lol

  24. Chris Paul is almost 35 and slowing down. Please don’t pay him for his past.

    Owen,
when I think you said Danilo was better than Melo, it made me cringe a bit. Then I went and looks at stats. In certain respects, TS%, eFG%, WS/48, 3PT/36, FT, Danilo is better. Close in Reb/36.
But Melo has much higher VORP, PTs/36, and much better 2PT%, and of course on another planet in terms of usage.

But the Perception of these players is completely different. Melo will likely get into the Hall. I think Danilo isn’t even in the conversation.

  25. But you just wait: His brother is going to ruin that Dallas team.

Stratomatic: Frequently wrong, but never in doubt:

  26. Well hell, did fortune just provide us with our next head coach? I know very little about Atkinson, but the little I know places him above the Mark Jackson / Thibs / other dreck we’ve heard bandied about lately.

  27. Maybe we really should, he helped develop a lot of players for the Nets… maybe he could do good with our young players. I don’t know if he’s high profile enough for the startstruck idiots in our front office, but I’d much rather have him than Thibs.

  28. Technically not a firing but a parting my mutual agreement. It’s weird and surprising.

  29. Finally read Moneyball. What I realize…

There’s a sport and a game. You can be great at the sport and bad at the game.

The Heat are like the A’s. We could have had Nunn, Robinson, etc but we got Bobby Portis. If we had just not gotten rid of Riley. (If the Jets had not gotten rid of Belichik) My whole life as a fan…

    And now Spike…

Could the team read Moneyball? Maybe look at some meaningful analysis of players before the draft? Make a safe pick of a productive player? Keep their hands off the overpriced veterans.

This is the depression part of the stages of grief. FUCK. THIS TEAM!

Oh yeah, KP6 shining. GSW gets first pick in the draft. Have a nice day…

  30. Knicks need to hire Atkinson. Brings an identity on the court, and no one has a recent track record of developing point guards like he does. Plus he would stop playing two non shooting bigs together 99% of the time which would prevent my head from exploding 82 times per year.

  31. Would maybe Dolan be interested in Atkinson as a way of trying to somehow screw the Nets?

I love the “mutually agree to part ways” stuff. So, was he “fired” or did he “quit?” Perhaps both? Orwellian doublespeak?

  32. There’s gotta be something else going on with Atkinson. The Nets haven’t been good this season, but Kyrie has hardly played and they’ll probably make the playoffs. Plus they just beat the Celtics in Boston and crushed the Spurs last night.

I think we’re going to hear more about this…

  33. My guess is Kenny Atkinson would jump on the knicks job if it were offered. Lots of young players, high lottery pick coming, doesn’t even have to move. Plus he gets to stick it in the Nets’ eye.

I’ve been on the JVG bandwagon and still would be happy if he were hired, but the #1 choice for me to coach by a long way is now Atkinson.

Guards that gave absolutely exploded under Arkinson:
    Jeremy Lin
    Russell
    Dinwiddie
    Levert
    Joe Harris
Even kyrie was having maybe his best offensive season under him.

Meanwhile Twitter is now saying that maybe they’re angling to hire mark Jackson. That would be so awesome… for everyone else.

  34. I have no idea what the Nets are doing, but I’m pretty sure they aren’t as smart as I once thought they were.

They took one of the worst situations I’ve even seen, turned it around at lightning speed, and now pretty much have 2 injured stars (one seemingly chronically hurt and always going through “things” and the other probably on his downside), lost a terrific developmental coach, and the team is not as good.

They’ll obviously be better when/if they get healthy next year, but they aren’t going anywhere serious from here.

  35. If we lose the recruiting battle for Mark Jackson to the Nets . . .

Actually, that doesn’t sound so bad.

  36. supposedly some of the nets players pushed to get rid of him…

didn’t he coach for us at one point?

hopefully leon jumps on this opportunity…I want Kenny on our sidelines…

  37. This should be a dream scenario for any other team that is in our situation where the perfect developmental coach like Atkinson just becomes available out of no where.

This is the Knicks of course so you know instead we will end up just getting in and winning a bidding war for Mark Jackson, because you know we are the Knicks and we kinda suck at everything.

  38. Would the “some Nets players” be Kyrie and KD?

The timing seems very weird, though.

  39. TheClashFan:
Would the “some Nets players” be Kyrie and KD?

The timing seems very weird, though.

The timing is weird. I’m thinking Management “Durant and Kyrie” decided to make this change and better to do it now before they make the playoffs. If they had won a couple rounds it would make dropping him at that point harder to justify.

  40. I hope they can get Atkinson but he has had a first hand look at the shit show at MSG so maybe he will go somewhere else…possible other openings are Bulls, Hornets, Magic, Sacto, Twolves…he might have some options….

  41. Not sure I can recall a more bizarre firing. I would say the Nets are over performing this year alone all things considered, and Atkinson’s track record is untouchable.

This is a huge gift to the Knicks, so expect them to piss it away and hire Tom Thibodeau.

  42. This report also sounds so weird, Durant hasn’t even played, Irving has been out more than he played, but it doesn’t seem to make sense that the young guys currently playing are influential enough with the management to fire a coach with a solid track record. So it kinda has to be Durant and Irving even though it makes no sense, but I guess that’s the Kyrie experience in a nutshell.

The team is even heading to the playoffs where they’ll get crushed on the first round, wasn’t it easier to just let him stay until that happens and fire him afterwards? Or maybe that’s where the mutual part comes, Atkinson would rather go now and have more time to find a new job and some paid vacations?

  43. If I’m the Knicks I’m interviewing Kenny Atkinson a day after the season ends and offering him a 5 year contract.

If I’m Kenny Atkinson I’m waiting for Brett Brown to get fired and then I’m selling the 76ers on my track record with much less talented point guards than Ben Simmons.

  44. Also, I bet the Nets are going to hire Mark Jackson lol.

There’s no way Caris LeVert, Spencer Dinwiddie, Jarrett Allen, and Joe Harris decoded they didn’t want to play for Kenny Atkinson anymore. They won a bunch with him and he got (or is going to get) a lot of them paid. This was a Kyrie Irving and (to a lesser extent) a Kevin Durant thing for sure. We will know for sure by who they hire.

  45. i’m pretty curious to see if dinwiddie says anything. he’s pretty candid and outspoken. getting atkinson here would feel like a huge win.

  46. Yeah, it has to be that Kyrie and Durant want their own guy. The Nets feel their season is over now that Kyrie won’t come back until next season, and decided to start the process early. If they hire Mark Jackson it will be such a mess, I can’t wait to see it.

  47. I would love to hire Kenny Atkinson but would settle for the Nets merely taking Mark Jackson off the board

  48. Just got back from a week of hiking Moab with Lady J in near solitude and I see trash rumor upon trash rumor. Is Knicks HC Mark Jackson anyone else’s point of no return? I think I might have an aneurysm if I remain on this site for that timeline.

  49. There is zero chance Dolan would ever hire a Neyt reject as a coach……no cachet

  50. “Is Knicks HC Mark Jackson anyone else’s point of no return? I think I might have an aneurysm if I remain on this site for that timeline.”

It is mine. I’m done for a while if he gets hired. Specially since it will screw things up around here too, some posters will start to rationalize it and make excuses for his hiring, etc etc. It will wreck any source of enjoyment I still have with this team.

  51. It is mine. I’m done for a while if he gets hired. Specially since it will screw things up around here too, some posters will start to rationalize it and make excuses for his hiring, etc etc. It will wreck any source of enjoyment I still have with this team.

Well, it’s that whole thing again of how you can only really enjoy the team as farce. You know ahead of time that Clouseau is going to bumble his way through the case but you’re still entertained watching him fail so spectacularly.

    I know, it’s not much.

  52. I don’t follow the Nets very closely, but Atkinson seems like a good coach. On the other hand, getting along with difficult stars is a big part of coaching in the NBA, and maybe he’s not good at that? On the other other hand, the Knicks don’t have any star players so he’d fit in well here. I imagine there will be more inviting jobs than the Knicks, but if the Nets fired him so they can bring in Mark Jackson it’s a big win for the Knicks franchise anyhow.

  53. Well, if the reports are right and the main source of discontent was him not playing DeAndre Jordan, then I say we should hire him immediately because he’s precisely what we need on this team.

  54. Obviously joining the group wanting Atkinson; finally another team royally fucked up and gave the Knicks the perfect opportunity, but I doubt they’ll take advantage.

  55. If we’re hellbent on drafting a point guard, we absolutely should sign Kenny Atkinson to be our coach.

  56. Vernon Carey Jr. will probably bust and make me look bad but he seems like a decent option.

I do think we should enjoy our NBA this year while we can.

Also, I know he’s blood in the ground or whatever, but hard no on Cole Anthony.

  57. It’s amazing how quickly things change. If Carey Jr. was putting up these exact same numbers just a few years ago he’d absolutely be considered a lottery pick, and probably top half. I mean he’s got a similar game and statistical profile to Jahlil Okafor, who was picked 3rd overall as recently as 2015! Five years later, Carey Jr. finds himself a fringe first rounder.

I think he’s unlikely to be a total bust, but barring rule changes that deemphasize the 3PT shot his upside is likely severely limited. That back to the basket stuff just doesn’t fly anymore, even for players who are efficient with it.

  58. Dellin Betances was throwing 89 MPH heat today for the Mets in spring training. This was their marquee offseason signing.

    Nice one, Brodie!

  59. At this point I have to think Anthony has chucked his way out of our range.

But I thought the same thing about Kevin Knox.

  60. Whoa, I thought Betances was supposed to be out for at least the whole first half.

I wanted him back for sure, but seems like the deal the Steinbrenners made with Cashman this offseason was that they’d ball out for Cole and exactly no one else.

  61. WTF is going on with James Harden? Last 4 games, he’s 9-49 from 3 point range and today he had 10 turnovers in a loss to Charlotte.

  62. bobneptune:
There is zero chance Dolan would ever hire a Neyt reject as a coach……no cachet

Absolutely right. Just forget it. He could be young Pop and it wouldn’t matter. If the nets fired him, we’re not hiring him.

This actually puts the worst case scenario into play: if the Nets want Mark Jackson, Dolan might see hiring him as a double bonus and use all his spending power to bring him here.

Until things get better, I’ll continue to fear the worst.

One thing I’m confident about, though: I don’t I’ll ever regret missing out on Kyrie and Durant.

  63. “Winning the bidding war for Mark Jackson” is Jack Tripper walking face-first into the kitchen door

  64. I feel good about life again. No way Mark Jackson will pass up the chance to coach Durant and mentor Kyrie.

  65. Owen:
I feel good about life again. No way Mark Jackson will pass up the chance to coach Durant and mentor Kyrie.

That sounds like the kind of thing that would make Dolan open his checkbook, doesn’t it?

And what’s worse than Mark Jackson as your coach? Mark Jackson as your coach with supreme job security bc he’s making $8mm for 5 years.

  66. Can’t you just see Stephen A Smith screaming “you cannot let the nets sign mark Jackson!!” and Dolan not knowing that it doesn’t matter what that idiot thinks?

  67. Watching the Curb episode about the guy who kills himself because the Jets (and also the Knicks a little bit) are so bad. Dolan, Hollywood is coming for you….

Also, there is a report out that Atkinson didn’t want to coach Durant and Kyrie. Which checks out.

  68. We can only hire personnel who check 2 out of 3 criteria:

    1. Big name
    2. CAA client
    3. Blood in the ground

Atkinson is a CAA client, so that’s one. He’s from Long Island, so that takes care of the BITG. Bring him aboard!

  69. Ok, now you all are just making stuff up to give me nightmares. The bidding war between the Nets and Knicks for Mark Jackson with the Knicks “winning” is by far the worst outcome I can think of for a coaching change. It would prove Rose is bad and hopeless, it would put in place an empowered Mark Jackson with job security and carte blanche to be his fucking crazy self and would give the Nets a better coach by process of elimination.

  70. “seems hard to believe the season won’t be suspended”

    It wasn’t already?

  71. d-mar:
WTF is going on with James Harden? Last 4 games, he’s 9-49 from 3 point range and today he had 10 turnovers in a loss to Charlotte.

Well he did have a quadruple-double…

  72. >WTF is going on with James Harden? Last 4 games, he’s 9-49 from 3 point range and today he had 10 turnovers in a loss to Charlotte.<

Everyone once in awhile a player comes along with extraordinary skills, whose game I hate, and who I am totally convinced will never win a championship as a major piece on his team playing the way he plays. Melo was one. Harden is another.

  73. Clippers/Lakers should be fun this afternoon.

  74. seems hard to believe the season won’t be suspended

Might be worthwhile for them to play for the cameras in empty arenas. But yeah, cases are likely to skyrocket this week with the broader testing, gonna be some freakouts.

  75. I remind you that James Harden is so good that the Rockets had to miss 27 consecutive threes while missing their top-3 all-time PG with a busted hamstring to lose to the most talented and top-heavy playoff team since the ’96 Bulls, maybe ever. They missed every one of their 14 3PA in the third quarter while coughing up a 11-point halftime lead. Harden missed just three of those 14 shots in that Q, but I guess we might as well assign all the misses to him.

Trevor Ariza missed all 12 of his shots that game. If he makes even a third of them, we’re probably talking about NBA Champion James Harden, who will never win a second because he’s just not cut from th two-time ring holder cloth.

  76. nets are starting dj. interim step before they ban globes in the locker room and provide cobra coverage for burner accounts.

  77. Usually teams get a bounce in wins after firing a coach, but I wonder if the Nets will. The players who were unhappiest with Atkinson reportedly were Irving and Durant and they aren’t playing. And if Atkinson wasn’t starting Jordan he probably had a good performance based reason for doing. Starting him may make the Nets worse.

  78. finally managed to catch parasite yesterday. I can’t remember the last time I agreed with the best picture award. 2014?

  79. Comparing Melo to Harden is a sign that you indeed have no idea of what basketball is. It’s like downplaying Messi’s greatness because he never won a world cup and never will.

If I had a penny for every idiot that said the same things about LeBron before the Heatles I’d be rich as fuck by now.

  80. I thought La La Land won. Did I miss something?

    Moonlight was a great film.

  81. It’s awesome watching the rest of the NBA world realize the truth about Marcus Morris.

“It’s Marcus Morris time,” – Marcus Morris since 2012

  82. Lakers/Clippers is a really nice matchup. I’d enjoy watching them play each other in the playoffs.

  83. i have clearly lost my mind because i can’t watch the game without stressing about the utter lack of social distancing. of course the grizz signed jontay, who else?

  84. of course the grizz signed jontay, who else?

Gotta keep the roster filled with longterm future Knick assets, like Moe Harkless. There’s no room to take fliers here on interesting young players who can be signed to super-cheap deals.

  85. Comparing Melo to Harden is a sign that you indeed have no idea of what basketball is. It’s like downplaying Messi’s greatness because he never won a world cup and never will.

I was comparing their willingness to play basketball the way it should be played to win championships and not their skill set or value, but that was probably one step beyond your understanding of the game.

  86. James appears even physically stronger than he used to be. Personally, I’ve long doubted it’s totally natural, but either way he’s unstoppable going to the basket unless perhaps you pack the paint and swarm him.

  87. Marcus Morris 0-9 and 0-7 from 3 as a 3rd option. That was our best player. Lol

  88. cases are likely to skyrocket this week with the broader testing, gonna be some freakouts.

nice connect the dots grocer…70k tests or so this upcoming week…another couple of hundred thousand the week after…it’ll be interesting to see where we are come april…

it’s hard to comprehend the global financial impact this kind of social “interaction” issue can have…

tradeshow/event shipping hits hardest for us in the fall…global business events though are already slowing dramatically…

  89. There were people against trading Marcus Morris for a first-round pick lol

  90. The Honorable Cock Jowles:

I understand what you are saying. The difference is that you probably think the Rockets missed all those 3s because of some random aberration in a perfectly mathematical universe. I think it was partly random and partly that the Warriors played great defense, the Rockets had very tight sphincters under extreme pressure, and the way you overcome extreme pressure is with ball movement, player movement, and team play that gets yourself and teammates easier shots.

The Warriors won with a lot of 3s, but they were also an aberrational team. They had 3 of the greatest 3 point shooters of all time on the same team. Even with that, their offense correctly stressed player and ball movement, they had 3 great playmakers on the court instead of 1 that the defense could lock down on, and they also had a great defense.

The Warriors did everything right if you are trying to win championships on top of also having incredible talent. Harden is doing everything right if you are tryin to fill up the stat sheet, make highlight reels, and win MVP honors, not win championships.

  91. Getting Jontay Porter on a multi-year nothing deal is a coup. Anyway I’m excited to see Wayne Ellington develop!

  92. I think an underrated aspect of this virus is that the best data may be coming off cruise ships because they know exactly how old everyone is, exactly how healthy they were, the exact transmission rate, and the exact death rate for each category.

You don’t have to worry about government incompetence or lies, people being positive but never getting tested because they were never sick enough or there was no test, people that were positive but that actually died from an unrelated cause etc..

From what I gather, the cruise ship data is more encouraging than the media reported data even though those ships are like Petri dishes.

Also, if this virus acts like some others, the up coming warmer weather sometimes associated with a slowing down of the flu and other virus seasons, could slow it down a bit in coming weeks from the purely exponential mathematical models projecting doom and gloom for hospital beds etc..

I’m 61 and generally good health, but I’m at the age where the death rate does start climbing a bit. But for you youngsters, other than potential inconvenience, you are extremely likely to come out of this fine and maybe even live long enough to see the Knicks win a championship.

No one is going to throw shade at the Warriors vis-a-vis the Rockets team that they eked by, but the Rockets took 46% more 3PA during the regular season (leading the #2 Nets by 546 attempts, an nearly doubling the last-place Wolves at 1845) and took more 3PA than 2PA over the course of the whole year while shooting a robust 36.2% over the course of the year, leading the league in ORtg — truly astounding stuff. They also had the 6th-ranked defense. I remind you again that this was a 65-win team that lost in 7 to a team with two top-5 modern-era scorers on it, in their prime.

And it’s also not like the Warriors’ defense was preventing them from getting shots up at all — they were simply not going in.

    https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/the-odds-of-the-rockets-missing-that-many-3s-1-in-72000/

So how unbelievable was it that Houston missed that many threes — many of which were wide open — in a row? To get a better sense, FiveThirtyEight leaned on Quantified Shot Probability (qSP) data — used to weigh the likelihood of a shot going in depending on who’s taking it, how close the nearest defender is to the shot, and how quickly that player is closing out — from Second Spectrum and NBA Advanced Stats, which use high-level cameras to track on-court movement.

By using that metric — and looking at the probability of each individual shot’s chance of going down, from Harden’s 33 percent hoist that began the drought to his 31.6 percent chance on the last shot of the dry spell — we can conclude that the Rockets embarked on an approximately 1-in-72,000 cold streak from deep at the worst possible time, with a trip to the Finals on the line.

  94. Schroeder is actually having his best season as a pro. Time for us to grab him (a la Randle) and watch him turn shitty.
