2016-17 Game Thread: Knicks vs. Thunder

Russell Westbrook and the Oklahoma City Thunder come to town tonight.

Remember, the Knicks beat the Thunder last year with roughly this same roster (Westbrook there but no Durant) despite Westbrook having a crazy game, so the Knicks should have a very good chance of winning the game tonight. They should be favorites in this game (I believe they are, gambling-wise).

Let’s go, Knicks!

  1. A very nice start. Noah playing better so far. Rose penetrating well. KP and Melo both looking like they want this one.

  2. 2 fouls on Westbrook already, the whistle seems to be on the Knicks side.

encouraging start, to be sure, but very little KP for my liking.

  3. Like I said earlier Rose is going to get at Russ tonight. This is the first time he’s been healthy enough to for a while

  4. OKC is such a horrible offensive team outside of Westbrook, so many terrible shooters all around.

  5. Horny’s staggered rotations to keep KP playing with the second unit are an interesting idea, I really like it.

  6. come on, what a stupid sequence in the defensive glass, that’s horrible.

the game has been easy, Westbrook has been kinda tame… the Knicks need to finish the first half strong, insurance policy in case Westbrook goes crazy in the second.

  7. well, guess Kanter is a star then.

(DRed with the best nickname ever, never heard that and it’s perfect omg)

  8. Where would we be so far without Rose?

This game? Probably behind. The season? Probably 8-8.

  9. here we go again, Melo and Rose missing jumpers, OKC coming back… please no, not again.

at least Rose is really getting to the line, which is a great sign.

  10. @37 I hate this so much, it seems Melo has his select crew of “respected” players, that include some teammates and some opponents, and that’s it.

you can see whenever he’s guarded by a guy he doesn’t respect, he instantly attacks the guy or pulls up for a jumper on his face…

  11. How has this become the Melo show?
He’s like the guy st the carnival that just keeps chucking out of frustration

  12. Get a 2-for-1 by hitting open Zingis at the 3 point line? Nah, I’m just gonna drive by myself and settle for a fugly step back

  13. Meanwhile Westbrook is one assist shy of a triple double. Rose scored a lot, Noah looked much livelier otherwise a very meh first half.

  14. the most absurd thing is that Rose is 8/8 from the line and Melo is 5/5

how the hell can Melo (and Rose, to a much lesser extent) not understand that if they keep attacking and drawing fouls, the team will be MUCH better because of it?

people complain all the time about unfavourable whistles, today the Knicks are having one of the most favorable whistles I’ve seen in a while, and the players are not taking advantage of it.

  15. Remember how I said the other day that Melo’s shooting percentages from 10 feet to the three point line seemed unsustainably high?

  16. This was why Jason Kidd was so important back in 2012-13, as he was one of those relatively rare players that Melo respected.

    CP3 would be one, too.

  17. The crazy thing about Westbrook is that I felt he didn’t even play all that well in the first half

  18. @51
I know he didn’t play much, but Kenyon Martin was also in that team, another guy Melo surely respected.

  19. Melo, 27% from the field.
KP is 46% from the field, 50% from 3 PT.

As long as you post this when it’s in reverse like the other day

  20. Melo just got blocked like 3 times

Which has been his major problem since coming off surgery last season. The explosiveness on his vertical lift is gone.

  21. The problem was that the Knicks got bullied by Kanter and Adams and let Morrow go off. That has nothing to do with the KB whipping boy

  22. What the hell. Weren’t we winning this game by 10? Caught a snatch of it and we were looking good.

  23. @61 nah not at all. I don’t even have a screen name. But Saying someone isn’t attacking when the mostly shot right at the rim is dumb tho

  24. er, Are you trying to say Melo didn’t take horrible shots that half and miss wide open teammates?

  25. @68 I won’t bother anymore, anyway, let’s all be positive and the win will come!

and I never said Melo didn’t attack the basket, I said he didn’t attack enough.

  26. If Horny continues to play KP these minutes it will be clear that this isn’t Melo’s team. We’re relying way too much on a sophomore player waaaay too much for us be a contending team.

  27. @74 clear for everyone else except Melo, right?

Not just him. There are many who still don’t get it.

  28. Clyde and Breen on the radio, Marc and John on TV – wow, what an amazing time that was to follow the Knicks on radio/TV.

  29. good job by Rose, keep atttacking the damn basket, good things will come.

    also, KP is just amazing.

  30. Who said I was talking about you? Projecting?

This place has to be the most put words in your mouth place I’ve ever seen. It’s weird because the words are literally on the screen

  31. This place has to be the most put words in your mouth place I’ve ever seen. It’s weird because the words are literally on the screen

    What?

  32. as soon as I praise Rose, here comes another contested Melo jumper… please stop immediately

  33. It doesn’t take a genius to predict a triple double for Westbrook. I’m calling for crazy eights for Rose tonight.

  34. In Melo’s partial defense he’s being guarded by one of the leagues best perimeter defenders. He should stop shooting so much though.

  35. Reminder that Melo has a no trade clause

I try not to. Almost as hard as I try not to think about who’ll be moving into the White House.

  36. Crowd now booing Melo’s gunning. I hate booing your own guys. He should take the clue though.

  37. Melo do you know the definition of inanity?

Expecting Melo to be another player he’s always been.

  38. lol @103 I thought I was the only one to wonder about that.
I miss Robert kvetching on the game threads, especially about the refs.

  39. I love Melo. He’s a great scorer and rebounder at his position. Phenomenal when he has it going. Overall, I believe he’s a great player. But he REALLY needs to get it in his head that the elite players always find another way to get it done if their shots aren’t falling. Especially when they have the kind of help he has

  40. If Hornaeck had balls he would bench Melo for the 4th. Make an example of him. The only time he ever gets the message is when his pride is offended. We’re not winning if we don’t move the ball around.

  41. The league should change the rule and make it so that when an offensive player jumps into a defender that it’s a charge no matter where they are at

  42. Rose has been keeping the Knicks in the game, but as Clyde has been repeating over and over again, the lack of continuity is not good…

let’s hope Westbrook is off in the 4th quarter

  43. BIG MAN STEAL!

    BIG MAN COAST TO COAST!

Hopefully that’s the start of something. Time is running out before Westbrook checks back in.

  44. Courtney Lee has been a huge disappointment. What happened to his shot? Holiday is better right now.

  45. I believe Lee is shooting like 41% from 3 this season. I think his defense has been suspect more of a problem than his offense.

  46. I believe we all know what Rose hero ball versus Westbrook hero ball will do…

let’s get KP more involved! nice 3!

  47. i don’t know why we don’t do more melo/kp pnr’s… it’ll get melo involved in more passing situations….

  48. Two minutes to go and we run a set that leads to a Melo iso with 6 seconds to go on the shot clock. It worked, but that’s sub-optimal

  49. I am concerned about Melo’s lack of elevation

I’m more concerned with his awful play, in general.

  50. Westbrook was Westbrook

    OKC’s role players show up

Knicks’ crunch time lineup looks unfamiliar with each other

    Too little, too late.

  51. I mean, I don’t know what to think anymore… I’ve been criticizing Rose so much, and on a night where he’s terrific, Anthony shoots us out of the damn game.

    it’s honestly depressing.

  52. We all love Zinger but he really needs to do a better job on the defensive boards.

Can’t take defensive rebounds for granted. Although I felt like they had about 25 o-reb rather than 17,

It’s a pretty major flaw in his game, no doubt. I have been skeptical from the start on that front but with a frame like his it’s easier to believe he’ll come into his own year 3-4

  53. melo’s going to get the blame but kp’s and for that matter noah’s rebounding is as big of a reason for the loss as melo’s shooting…. westbrook, kanter and adams both had as many o-reb’s than kp or noah had total…

  54. Look at the box score. OKC won this game I. The second quarter when Kanter and Morrow and Adams went off. The Knicks scored over 100. Offense wasn’t the problem

  55. Thunder bigs truly out muscling and hustling … plus to have Westbrook crash the boards like he does… they saw a weakness and pushed us around all night… happy to see us hang in there as long as we did…

    KP… keep hitting them weights!

I’ve never seen someone get their hands on more rebounds and loose balls yet do nothing with them, than Noah … I don’t like what he’s brought. Much softer than expected.

Lastly, I know how to seal out fate when were running out of time. Feed Melo… the shot will be 100% contested and of high difficulty. AND will take however much shot clock we have left!

  56. The OKC recipe is to have Russ do Russ things and then maul teams on the boards. They’re not a great team-they can’t shoot for shit, but they have certain strengths, and they played their game tonight. Shame we wasted an actual good game from Rose. You see the difference getting to the line makes for him.

  57. KP gets pushed off the block by 6 ft guards and 7ft centers alike. He needs to keep working them weights or find sneakier ways to get position. Adapt KP, if you must! Find a niche!

  58. so you’re saying a player going 4-19 wasn’t at least part of the problem?

    please.

Some people here have a reading comprehension problem

  59. Weird that Noah got so thoroughly crushed on the glass-the one thing he’s done really well this year is rebound.

  60. @210

“Look at the box score. OKC won this game I. The second quarter when Kanter and Morrow and Adams went off. The Knicks scored over 100. Offense wasn’t the problem”

    offense wasn’t the problem, right?

  61. Let me break it down for the clearly challenged. Melo had an awful game. But the more pressing reasons they lost were the other factors including rebounding and protecting the paint and defending the bigs.

Is that clear? Or you gonna keep putting words in my mouth?

  62. Noah tips defensive bounds right into Kanter or Adams finger tips … I’m tired of him tipping. Grab the ball!

  63. i hate to say it but kp’s been soft on the boards the entire season… i’ve seen him actually only go up for one rebound total and really hasn’t pulled down any contested rebounds…

there aren’t too many teams built like okc that play this physical so it’s not going to be pronounced but he def needs to step up there… also needs to get to the line….

  64. I’m all in on giving up on him already. Him being Noah. Just not loving him. And as an untrained couch psychologist, I don’t think he has any depth. There’s something about him that seems disingenuous.

  65. Because Rose was great tonight.

But I do believe that there’s some kind of an injury there with Jennings.

  66. One thing I thing KP does too much is dribble. He pumps and drives on like 4 threes a game. He should just launch em. No one can contest anyway

  67. I think horny tried to match size tonight more than usual but I’m probably wrong because I missed half the game. Either way, something about his lineup combos seemed off tonight

  68. KJG this was the kind of game where we needed Noah to perform…against the bruisers. He missed more free throws than he had rebounds.

  69. @228 it’s Noah. Remember he was out. I don’t think we played Melo at the four for one minute. That would have forced OKC to make a decision with Roberson or to take one of their bigs out

  70. KP gets pushed off the block by 6 ft guards and 7ft centers alike. He needs to keep working them weights or find sneakier ways to get position. Adapt KP, if you must! Find a niche!

That was his problem in Europe, that everyone abused him, but then last season he was mixing in with the best of them at the start of the season, which was so impressive (that he took his biggest weakness and made it a strength) so I don’t know why he has gone away from it so far this year. I mean, whatever, the other things he’s done has been so great that it isn’t a huge deal, but if he could put it all together? Holy shit! And that’s sort of what I was selfishly expecting from his this year, that he would take the impressive interior play from last year and add the scoring as his efficiency would hopefully improve. Well, the efficiency improved a ton, and that alone is enough to make him a star, but he lost the interior play. Weird.

  71. Maybe the scouting report is out on him? He didn’t seem this bad last year when he seemed much skinnier.

  72. i think rolo absolutely had an effect on kp… but kp’s also been just very lazy and he’s contesting shots further out on the perimeter now… only he doesn’t ever go for the rebound when he does and usually just starts running back on offense….

i also don’t know how much he can handle playing 38+ minutes a night…

  73. @237 You’re right Brian. He has regressed on the interior play, offensively and defensively. 7.8 boards per 36 minutes is not good enough for a guy with his reach.

His scoring efficiency has been so great that he’s still clearly our best player. But if he’s ever going to play C full time he needs to get better on the glass. Shawn Bradley, with a similar lanky frame, averaged 9.7 rebounds per 36 for his career.

Of course he’s still young so hopefully he will improve on the boards as he gets toward his mid-20s.

  74. Melo has had back-to-back brutal games shooting wise but remember thru the first 15 games he had a TS% of 57%. A couple of bad games in a row (granted they were really bad) doesn’t mean he sucks now and he shouldn’t shoot anymore. I only saw the last few minutes of the game but what surprised me the most from the box score was Melo only attempted 1 shot from 3pt range. Going into tonight he was averaging 6 attempts from 3pt range per game.

  75. The minutes are wearing KP down. But, yeah, he needs to build his hand strength. They were ripping rebounds straight from his grasp.

  76. Melo should not be taking contested midrange jumpers. Period. Missing 15 shots means he lost the game single-handedly, and probably affected the game more so than getting out rebounded. considering that if he hit more of his jumpers there’d be less offensive rebounding opportunities. He was horrible.

His midrange shooting is regressing to the mean and that’s really, really bad because he’s regressed in pretty much all other aspects of his game this year. He needs to be traded, because he’s gonna be an albatross. That’s not happening, unfortunately.

I think KP’s rebounding woes have to do with 1. him being more on the perimeter/running around more, which tires him out and puts him more out of position; 2. being surrounded by three excellent rebounders in Noah, KOQ, and Hernangomez; 3. Not having the RoLo boxout–seriously, that player is the epitome of being more than his box score indicates. He’s been better than Noah and would be the 2nd or 3rd best player on our team were he still here. Thanks Phil.

  77. Melo should not be taking contested midrange jumpers. Period. Missing 15 shots means he lost the game single-handedly, and probably affected the game more so than getting out rebounded. considering that if he hit more of his jumpers there’d be less offensive rebounding opportunities. He was horrible.

This makes no sense Rose had 30 points and balanced out Melo’s bad play. I don’t understand how letting the top 2 opposing bigs have 19-28 shooting night along with 10 offensive boards is no big deal. Russ also had 5 offensive boards

Also as bad as Melo was he got 11 ft attempts. So he wasn’t just settling he was getting to the rim.

  78. game but what surprised me the most from the box score was Melo only attempted 1 shot from 3pt range. Going into tonight he was averaging 6 attempts from 3pt range per game.

Right because he was trying to get to the rim all game. Which is what people say you should do if shot isn’t falling right?
