2016-17 Game Thread: Knicks @ Nets

After a much-needed loss last night, the Knicks are running up against one of the hardest teams in the NBA to lose to in the Brooklyn Nets. The good thing is that the Nets have no reason to lose this game, while the Knicks have a very good reason to try to lose this game, so there’s a chance that the Nets could pull it out at home. The Nets have been playing better since Jeremy Lin returned to the team, as they had a point guard-driven offense being driven by, like, Randy Foye (it still shocks me that the Nets dumped Yogi Farrell while keeping Foye on the team. Foye has never been good).

So the Knicks have a chance of losing this one. This would be a big loss. I’m going to the game on Thursday and hopefully that is somehow a loss, as well.

Charles Oakley, by the way, continues his “showing up at Knick road games” shtick tonight.

Let’s go? Knicks!

  1. Oakley needs to get over it and embrace my dream where he represents the Knicks at the draft lottery.
    :-)

  2. Willy refusing to defend the 3 pt line no matter how many threes Lopez makes.

  3. Didn’t realize we were playing the Spurs today. Oh, it’s the league worst Nets? huh.

  4. Willy and KP have some encouraging stat lines. Melo and Rose have some encouraging stat lines too.

  5. Takes a whole lotta offense to make up for this defense.. the secret to sneaking a tank- no D. That inbounds to Melo’s man under the hoop (whoever it was, I don’t know Nets players) was sickening

  6. And as per the comments made earlier today about KP– I see nothing wrong with KP/HG/Holiday/Baker. Their cast sucks. I reserve my opinion until we have a non-superdysfunctional group actually trying to compete.

  7. THCJ, kicking myself for not betting the under
*edit: THCJ, could have moved out of my mom’s basement if I bet the under

  8. Just put the game on. Melo makes a layup, then proceeds to head the ball out of bounds for his second delay of game violation and a technical.

Now that’s what I call leadership.

    Think I’ll watch 60 Minutes.

  9. Oh my god, a 24 second violation — the Knicks actually playing defense. The Nets aren’t hitting all their threes either. This could be close. But Melo and Rose just went one on one on two successive possessions (and missed), so who knows.A

  10. man, losing this game would be so huge for the tank.

looking at tankathon.com, the chances for a top 3 pick increase by ~70% going from the #7 slot to the #6 slot (12.7% –> 21.5% overall chance). I think we will basically be battling Sacramento for that slot — they’ve been playing well but losing in overtime. Under the radar Phoenix has been playing well (5-5 in their last 10) but I don’t think we can make up 4 games on them with just 16 to play.

Although if we can lose to the Nets, we can do anything.

  11. really clutch “lack of effort” performance today…that was our only hope of being able to score fewer points than the brooklyn nyets…

those knicks, led by our star players, where able to dig deep and easily come up with more than enough of a lackluster defensive effort to ensure – another game in the tank…

  12. Lin answers Melo’s 3 with his, Melo’s two with a hockey assist, and then causes KP to foul out. Linsanity, I love you.

  13. DRose catches a unicorn hoof in the face! I had to rewatch that in slo-mo a few times. So sweet.

  14. Iso-Melo is so predictable. It works just long enough to make you think maybe it can prevail, then overstays its welcome, withers and fails miserably in the end.

  15. Thanks for the loss Jeremy! We love you!

What a gift this loss is

  16. I knew Lin would come through for us, a gigantic loss!

I had this one as a guaranteed W, but the tank is stronger than I thought!!!

  17. New DX redesign is super nice

It also has Fox at #5 and Isaac at #9

  18. There’s actually only 2 more should-win games left on our schedule: Brooklyn at home on Thursday and Philly at home on April 12th to close out the season.

We can do this. If we really believe in ourselves, we could even sink to #3–Phoenix has a VERY easy remaining schedule.

  19. the Suns are also 4-2 in March, beating Boston, OKC, Dallas and Charlotte, and losing a very close game to the Wizards… I still have faith!

  20. Suns also have a very easy schedule. They only have 4 games left against teams over .500.

  21. I’ve been watching scouting videos nonstop.

Obviously I’d love Fultz, Ball, or Josh Jackson, but if we are left choosing between the 2nd tier PG/SGs, I think I’d put Fox first, Ntilikina 2nd, and Monk a distant 3rd. (I am sure that now that I have written this, Monk will turn into Steph Curry and THCJ will search the archives to prove how dumb I am).

I just feel like we need to have a guy at the PG position that can really guard the point of attack. Fox is crazy athletic and motivated on the defensive end, and I think we can hope that his jumper improves. Ntilikina is a black box, and Monk is just too chucker-ish.

  22. I didn’t see this game, but this game thread was a gem. Thanks to all of you wags for your contributions. You guys are funny.

If it wasn’t for Knickerblogger I wouldn’t even bother following this team. I love the shared sense of bitter gallows humor leavened with the underlying hope that maybe some sort of miracle will happen and we’ll clusterfuck our way into Lonzo Ball. It’s cynicism with a heart.

  23. What a loss! All things seem possible right now! 30 wins might not even be a lock at this point!

  24. “cynicism with a heart”.

this is my favorite definition ever about this site hahaha

if the Sixers beat the Lakers tonight it will be great for the tank possible future endeavors.

  25. if the Sixers beat the Lakers tonight it will be great for the tank possible future endeavors.

What a weird game that will be, when both teams desperately want to lose it.

  26. I am sure that now that I have written this, Monk will turn into Steph Curry and THCJ will search the archives to prove how dumb I am).

To be fair, I only come at you when you say batshit insane and/or patently stupid shit, like that The Bargnani Trade might turn out well or that The Rose Trade had a lot of reasonable upside.

Draft picks are a crapshoot, no matter how much college info you have.

Also I was right about Seth Curry and you should kiss my feet for it.

  27. Want proof KP is caught defending too many shots per game? KP is leading the league in defended shots per game. I really can’t blame him for not being Durant or Dirk yet if he’s stuck defending any of the opposing 5 players that is in the paint.

  28. Want proof KP is caught defending too many shots per game? KP is leading the league in defended shots per game. I really can’t blame him for not being Durant or Dirk yet if he’s stuck defending any of the opposing 5 players that is in the paint.

Interesting list- Among guys who play real minutes your league leader in fg% differential is… Lance Thomas at -8.9%. Somebody posted something yesterday saying he’s statistically one of the worst small forwards defensively so who knows…

  29. What’s a more Knicksy outcome?

We go on a tear in April powered by KP, Hernangomez, and Randle which ruins our draft positioning, OR

We land the #3 pick in the draft and take Dennis Smith Jr.

I can’t seem to figure out which is most likely.

  30. How about this Knicksian story line: Derrick Rose goes on a tear –all his low percentage shots start to go in, refs start calling every touch foul on his defenders and he announces that he’s really comfortable in the triangle. Knicks get the 11th pick, re-sign Rose and select PF Robert Williams from Texas A & M.

  31. DFG% is very noisy and I’m almost always going to trust defensive plus minus stats more if they’re saying contradictory things except for like centers, where the tracking stats are relatively trustworthy

  32. In the two games since Phil coached the triangle KP’s had 8 assists to 4 turnovers. This is a very interesting development.

  33. It is interesting. And supposedly, Phil only coached the guards, not the big men, so it must be something about the way the rest of the team is playing.

  34. @53

I do believe Rose is spiteful enough to do it, I thankfully do not think he’s capable of doing it.

he shot a lot of free throws today but both he and Melo were massive for the tank, I still trust them to not be able to figure out why the hell this team sucks until the end of the year.

  35. Sixers beat the Lakers. We’re only 2 games ahead of them now and I believe they have an easier schedule.

  36. It’s already become evident that the Knicks need to make KP the focal point of the offense and jettison Melo and Rose by July. He’s just a better team player than the two, and he probably wouldn’t have a foul total as high as it was if it weren’t for Derrick Rose’s inability to stay in front of anybody. As down as I’ve been on Phil Jackson, if he trades for Ricky Rubio and keeps Randle on he’d have fixed our point guard issues while allowing us a chance to develop a guy like Ntilikina who should probably take the James Harden route to PG (as in he needs to play the 2 when he gets to the NBA).

Randle, Lee, O’Quinn, KP, Lance Thomas, and Willy Hernangomez all look good as of recent. Randle needs more minutes but he’ll sink the tank. I’m hell bent on the Knicks adding Rubio and subtracting Melo and Rose at this point. Rubio, Randle, Lee, Holiday, LT, KP, Hernangomez, the 2017 pick, and O’Quinn is about as good a group we could have asked for save for a Seth Curry signing.

The more I think about it is the more certain I become Rubio will be a Knick in a couple months. He’s not going to want to pay top dollar for Holiday or Teague. The reason he traded for Rose was because he didn’t want to pay top dollar to Rondo or Conley, and those two have been better players historically than what’s on the market this year. I’ll be pushing for a Phil Jackson extension if he trades Melo, brings home Rubio, and drafts Jonathan Isaac.

  37. And supposedly, Phil only coached the guards, not the big men, so it must be something about the way the rest of the team is playing.

I wonder if Phil coached the guards on dropping more of the ball into the paint where the bigs like KP can distribute the ball. He’s been tied for most assists on the team the past two games.

  38. But who do we want with our possible new-found riches? Ball, Fultz, Fox, Isaac, Frank? Is that the order?

  39. That could be, that is how the triangle is supposed to operate.

If that’s the plan moving forward our draft strategy changes. We will probably not be looking for ball dominant guards like Smith.

  40. Ball, Fultz, Isaac, Fox and Frank would be a fine order to me… I’d even get excited by Jackson and Smith.

just no Tatum or Markkanen and I’m happy.

  41. I’d say:
Fultz, Isaac, Ball, Jackson, Fox, Smith, Tatum, Monk, Frank

Big gap between Jackson and Fox and big gap between Smith and Tatum.
