2015-16 Game Thread: Knicks vs. 76ers

While Martin Luther King Day is a special day for all of us, it is especially important in the NBA, where the vast majority of players are African-American. The Knicks, in particular, have a long and proud association with African-American history – the Knicks were the first NBA team to sign an African-American player and, as I detailed in an old Unsung Knick History installment, were the first team to have an all-black team (and thus also played in the first game in NBA history where all the players who played in the game were black).

Today, the Knicks celebrate MLK Day in their usual fashion, with an afternoon game. They host the hapless Philadelphia 76ers. The Knicks could really use an easy win, and the Sixers should be just what the doctor ordered (although the Sixers did just recently surprise the Trailblazers with a shocking twenty-five point victory!).

Let’s go Knicks!

Happy Martin Luther King Day, everyone!

  1. I actually had no idea of this bit of Knicks history, so shame on my dojo. But it makes me all the more proud to be a fan of this franchise.

Excited for the game! The cat-and-mouse game with getting over .500 continues…

  2. Melo is good to go against the somewhat juvenated Sixers. They certainly have more hap now that they’ve added Ish Smith.

  3. We have our good luck charm at the game today. KP just tweeted a pic of himself with that little guy who was so upset when he was selected in the draft. They’re bff nowadays it seems.

  4. https://twitter.com/nba/status/689117641651388417

Since we all know that a starting five of CP3, Curry, Kawhi, LeBron and DeAndre Jordan would win every game by three hundred points, what would be your worst starting five from this list (keeping traditional positions in mind)?

    Wall
    Beal
    Hayward
    Gay
    Cousins

Could that team even make it to a medal game?

  5. I think you are underselling Cousins. The Kings beat a lot of NBA teams when he’s in the lineup and the rest of their lineup isn’t as good as the lineup you just listed.

  6. I think it’s more a statement about how the international game is played and all the good choices for that role. In an environment where you’re going to have stud outside scorers 1-4, it probably makes the most sense to have a defense/rebounding center and Howard, Jordan, Green and Drummond seem to fit that role better than Cousins.

So it’s not “Cousins is bad,” it is just, “of these choices, who is the least great fit?”

    I would say

    Conley
    DeRozan
    Barnes
    Gay
    Jordan

  8. It’s not exactly aesthetically pleasing but Lopez has been pretty good with that hook as of late

  9. I think Jeremy is of more value at the present time. I get to watch a lot of games living in Philly

  10. Derrick Williams does this trick where he shakes his dreads and draws a foul. Maybe Melo should grow dreads

  11. I’ve been watching KP. He is FREQUENTLY open, and calls for a pass, but no one seems to WANT to pass to him. It looks very, very intentional.

  12. Yeah, but half are from his own rebounds, which he is (correctly) trying to put back. Or from Melo.

  13. Stealzingis! Someone needs to make a Swype app where it recognizes when you’re combining something with KPs name.

  14. If Derrick Williams was a good three point shooter he would be worth that #2 pick Minnesota spent on him. I hope he gets that part of his game together. He would be the James Harden of forwards the way he draws fouls effortlessly.

  15. @37 If he adds that part of his game, he’ll be long gone at the end of the season for a rich contract somewhere else. Of course, he’s probably gone anyways.

  16. The Knicks need to get their shit together. These are the 76ers.

@37 not if he re signs with New York and works out with Melo all summer and essentially becomes bench Melo.

  17. If they blow this game the blame goes entirely on Fisher for the God awful lineups he used at the end of the 3rd, to start the 4th quarter which allowed the 76ers to get back into the game.

  18. If they lose this game Fisher should be fired immediately.

To be fair, it’s hard to win when you’ve got a guy going 5-21 and a stupendously bad 14 points on those 21 shots.

  19. Just started watching in the 4th. Is there a reason why Lopez can’t help with this atrocious pick n roll D?

  20. Fair enough. Before zinger was taken out, I figured having another big guy in might make up for calderon

  21. I previously said the Nets loss was the most disappointing loss of the season. This one would be FAR more disappointing. Hell, even if we win it’ll be the most disappointing win of the season.

  22. Fucking Lance’s thing is supposed to be that he doesn’t do dumb shit

He also fouled Lillard on a three against Portland.

  23. I’m on Fisher. You can’t leave Calderon in the game late on D. Again, he gets torched.

  24. This is piss poor in so many ways… While Fischer fucked up… The entirety of these last 18 minutes have been pathetic. Every one of them… Including Melos three…. Sixers are gonna win it at buzzer! Too much time

  25. lolknicks

Will D’Antoni get his revenge? I’m betting on an Ish Smith buzzer beater.

  26. Ish Smith blows by Calderon for the game winning layup. Calling it.

Edit: bunch of you already beat me to it. Ahhh, to be a Knick fan…

  27. That has to be Melo’s first successful attempt in one of those situations in at least 15 shots

  28. Good D. We’re lucky Noel had a brain fart on Melo. Surprised he didn’t try to force him to drive

  29. Hey look at that, the Knicks put a guard on the floor who can actually move and he played good defense. Imagine that.

  30. Good D. We’re lucky Noel had a brain fart on Melo. Surprised he didn’t try to force him to drive

Brett Brown was screaming at Noel to do just that.

  31. Let’s hope this ends like the recent Chicago/Philly overtime game. With Melo in the Jimmy Butler role.

  32. Chris Herring tweeted that the Knicks have lost 3 games when they lead by 15+ pts which is tied for the most in the NBA. They were up by as much as 18 today.

  33. Did Porzingis and Okafor both get injured in this game? (Looks like they were having a pretty good rookie-off for 3 quarters)

  34. Game tying three notwithstanding, Melo has been an abominable ball-stopping force since Zinger went down. Noel’s two violent rejections of him show how predictable he is.

  35. Noel’s two violent rejections of him show how predictable he is.

    That was really, really embarrassing

  36. If we blow an 18 point lead to the Sixers and Porzingis gets seriously hurt that might be the worst game I’ve ever been alive for

  37. Well, for a half season there I actually had some hope.

Back to your regularly scheduled permanent sucking.

  38. People who know medical stuff, would Porzingis likely be in the locker room if it was serious? Or am I just trying to talk myself off the ledge?

  39. I can imagine that D’antoni probably has the most fun out of any coach. He has been vicariously playing through underachieving point guards for years and thrusting them into stardom (even if it’s only for a short time).

  40. Probably my imagination but seems like Afflalo is inordinately good at big shots

  41. It’s odd Phil chose to double. Melo has been hurting them all day but when they went single and just let Noel help they have had success.

  42. Melo has been pretty awful today but the past 2 defensive possessions and his pass to Aflalo have been huge.

  43. Robin hedges and loafs… I’m a big Lou homer … Always have been. I like his activity even if most hate him.

  44. @144. I think Lou will always be that down the stretch… Just a liability in so many other ways.

  45. Sorry I was only half paying attention… How did the Knicks get to inbound at half court there?

  46. The worst part about all of this is how we can’t trust anything the Knicks will say about Porzingis’ foot

  47. I’m not watching this. When Porzingis came off the court, was he walking like his foot was just “sore” or was he walking like every bone in his foot shattered into a million pieces? Is there any reason to feel anything other than gut-punching fear over this?

I could give a shit about the outcome of this terrible game, just tell me the big man’s foot is gonna be okay.

  48. Gallo got beat on that And1 but other than that play he’s played very good D on Smith in OT.

  49. Okay, this is more like it. The fresher Knicks, Galloway especially, are feasting now.

  50. I’m not watching this. When Porzingis came off the court, was he walking like his foot was just “sore” or was he walking like every bone in his foot shattered into a million pieces? Is there any reason to feel anything other than gut-punching fear over this?

He had a limp that got less as time went on, and I’ve seen him up and walking around in the huddles. I’m nervous as hell about it too, but it seems like maybe it’s just a precautionary thing. At least, I certainly hope so.

  51. Melo isn’t running like that because he’s exhausted. Expect him to sit out next game.

  52. Smith is fascinating in how dumb he has played at times.

I think his ego is going to win the Knicks this game.

    Oh, and Galloway.

  53. One thing you can’t say about Melo is that he isn’t in great shape. Playing 49 mins after missing a week with a sprained ankle.

  54. Bets on Fisher being smart enough to not get an 8 sec violation here?

Well, someone was smart enough to call that second timeout.

  55. Well this beats the 40+ blowout the Knicks suffered vs the Hornets on MLK day I believe it was in 2002.

  56. Breen bringing up that Camby punch on JVG!! JVG had a classic quote after the game, saying Camby just did something a bunch of other players have wanted to do lol.

  57. Based on my amateur lip reading, Melo asked Porzingis about his foot and he said “I’m alright.”

  58. Gallo is so, so much better than Calderon at this point. Those layups, blocks, and defensive plays (Canaan especially) should solidify his role.

The offense stunk all second half, with no ball movement, and 2013-14 style iso-ball.

And the defense stunk worse. But, again, that was mostly on Fisher for playing Calderon all those minutes against a red-hot sixers guard game.

Can we just play Gallo/AA/Melo/KP/RoLo as our main lineup?

  59. Calderon has been excellent offensively and some nights his D isnt a big problem. But games like today where he is clearly getting destroyed on every defensive possession it is complete negligence on Fisher’s part to keep him on the floor at Gallo’s expense in the 4th quarter.

Gallo is not an All-NBA defender but he is clearly the best defensive PG the Knicks have and games like today he has to be out there in crunch time. After all the praise Fisher has gotten recently for his improved rotations and substitution patterns today might have been the worst game he has coached all season long.

  60. Well this beats the 40+ blowout the Knicks suffered vs the Hornets on MLK day I believe it was in 2002.

That was the only Knicks game I ever took my daughter to. Surprisingly, she declined to attend any more games.

  61. My dvr cut out with one minute remaining in double OT. Did we win?

    Yeah, the Knicks won.

  62. A few observations:
    1. It took Fisher so long to take out Calderon, and it almost cost the Knicks the game. It was ridiculous.
    2. Afflalo is probably a better post-up/iso option than Melo, especially tired/injured Melo, and especially with the matchups in this game.
    3. The Knicks could’ve gotten away with going smaller vs Noel, since he doesn’t have much of a post-up game. I probably would’ve gone with Derrick Williams instead of Amundson or Lopez, although Lopez was fine.
    4. The offense became really stagnant as Melo tried to will the team to defeat. I was dying for a pick and roll early in the shot clock.
    5. Please don’t play Vujavic.

  63. Galloway looked really good!
    Sasha and Jerian didn’t.
We need another guard like Erick Green or even Toury Murry.

I’ve had a few foot injuries and they can be nothing or devastating. KP should look up the guy who fitted Novac Djokovic and get fitted for orthotics. They could save his career.

  64. I’m off the Calderon bandwagon. He’d be a great backup, and not expensive really, but he’s just not good enough to start in a modern PG-heavy NBA.

I wouldn’t even know where to tell PJ to get a good PG. Conley or bust this offseason? Trade who for who? The youngest unrestricted FA PG coming up is Jennings. Ish Smith is available. Meh.

  65. You know, I think that even Travis Trice of Westchester could help us. He’s smart, quick, shoots well and knows the system. Or just play Galloway more at point guard while letting Jose continue to start so that his feelings aren’t hurt. But we do need to add one more capable guard from somewhere.

  66. So, when can we fire Fisher?

He’s not the one who missed 21 shots. I mean, yeah leaving Calderon in there as long as he did was indefensible, but one guy missing 21 shots makes it hard to win any game.

  67. What a game today, easily a game we would normally lose after giving up the lead. I have to agree with most of you guys today, Fisher coached a bad game. His substitutions were curious, allowing Calderon to stay out there during the big 76er run (and keeping Galloway on the bench). During that run he also allowed Philly to keep the momentum, failing to call timeouts. Then there is the Machine making an appearance, obviously because he was so impressive during garbage time vs Memphis, smh.
But my biggest issue was NOT fouling at the end of 1st OT, when Knicks were up by 3 with less than 10 seconds left. I mean wtf? Philly was missing a lot of free throws too…it seemed like an obvious call.
Also, what has to happen for Dwill to get more PT…Is his defense that bad that he can’t play more than 15 min in a 2OT game?

  68. but one guy missing 21 shots makes it hard to win any game.

So if the 21 misses were more spread out it would have been better? Huh?

    @220 I agree

  69. So if the 21 misses were more spread out it would have been better? Huh?

No, it would have been better if some of those 21 misses weren’t misses. Not sure why that needed clarification really.

  70. To be honest KP was doing a pretty bad job on D helping out on Smith. It was all Calderon’s fault for getting toasted all the time but KP seemed to be leaving his man and jumping way too early. Amundson, for as much as I hated seeing him on the floor because of the complete 0 he is on offense, was alot more disciplined and effective with his help on penetration.

This game is won in regulation if Gallo wouldve re-entered the game for Calderon with a few mins left in the 4th quarter not midway thru the 1st OT.

  71. How does 21 shots have anything to do with one of the worst shooters in the league taking 4? You can analyze Melo’s failings if you want this game. I STILL don’t want to see Vujacic. Ever.

The same argument that the Knicks would probably have won it in regulation if KP is playing applies to Vujacic. If someone else got those 6 minutes, we could have won it in regulation. Maybe he wants Vujacic’s wife (don’t we all).

  72. 21>4

Pretty sure that’s correct. Therefor, missing 21 shots is worse than missing 4 because, as previously demonstrated, 21>4 and missing shots is bad.

As for what one has to do with the other…you tell me. You’re the only one who linked the two together. As far as I’m concerned those are both bad things, but neither one has much to do with the other really.

  73. Nobody is arguing that Melo didnt have an awful game offensively (though he did have 7 assists and played excellent D). But he sat with 40 secs left in the 3rd quarter and the Knicks up 15. He shouldve had the rest of the day off but instead he had to re-enter the game 3 mins into the 4th quarter with the lead already down to 6.

Melo played 49(!!) mins today after missing the past 2 games with a sprained ankle and he clearly wasnt close to playing at 100%, that’s beyond negligent on Fisher’s part. This game was almost lost 100% because of Fisher’s lineups and substitutions (or lack thereof) in the 4th quarter.

  74. So I had to make a 4-hour drive this afternoon and was fortunate enough to listen to the entirety of the Knicks game on SiriusXM with the great Mike Crispino doing play-by-play. Need I say more?

  75. learn when to stop shooting when he’s having such terrible games.

I know that’s the optimal thinking, but these guys aren’t built like that.

  76. He didn’t even have x rays.

This team, it seems, can beat (almost) anyone and can also lose to anyone. We don’t quite have enough to hang with the big boys and we also don’t have enough to hang with the lesser lights if one of our rotation players goes down or is diminished by injury. Still I like our roster and wonder who loses their job if we get someone new. I am praying it’s not LG or LT. I think Phil will upgrade next summer but not before and in the meantime we are what we are, which today had me pounding on my furniture.

I think we should definitely make Galloway the de facto 1 in the offense. He’s the perfect PG for the triangle. He’s the only PG we have that doesn’t need a high screen every time down and you know we’re not gonna start doing that (Sorry Jerian). I think Lance Thomas should get minutes at the 2. He guards the perimeter really well, can make outside shots, and drive.

These guys would start for me LG, LT, Melo, KP6, Rolo. I like Alfallo but see him as a guy who we can look to in the post when Melo isn’t in. Ditto Dwill. Those guys are more volume shooter-ish and thus less consistent than MY MAN LT. So you bring them in and if they don’t have it you’re starters play a few more minutes if you wanna win. Calderon is our best one way guard, potentially, but it was scary watching the KP6 try to help while Ish threw lobs to the rim.

  77. RIP Glenn Frey. I mean, who isn’t an Eagles fan?

Shit, what is going on? Lou Reed, Bowie, Glenn Frey. I guess it can only be that we’re getting older. Hopefully the Knicks get us a championship before it’s too late.

  78. RIP Glenn Frey. I mean, who isn’t an Eagles fan?

There’s an opening in the Eagles now. You know a certain fedora-wearing, NBA-team owning jerkass is leaving frantic voice mails on Irving Azoff’s voicemail begging for a shot.

  79. Meanwhile Cavs looking like they don’t even belong in the same league as the Warriors. I guess it’s pretty much going to come down to Spurs vs Warriors in the WCF. As improved as the East is this year, it’s still the irrelevant conference.

  80. Man, you gotta give fish some credit! Sits big Lou the whole game, keeps him fresh, then unleashes him in OT!

And how bad is our PG play? got beat by a dude named Ish.

  81. An old fashioned country ass-kicking pretty much sums it up.

Steph to LeBron: Now, WHO did you say was the best player in the world?

  82. I take a back seat to no man when it comes to loving Langston Galloway, but Jose is by far the best shooter on the roster. His TS% is 5 points higher than anyone else in the starting lineup. I’d like to try some Zinger/Melo/Afflalo/Galloway/Calderon. That lineup has only played 12 minutes.

  83. So Boston/Dallas is going to OT because Raymond Felton fouled Crowder on a 3 with 7 seconds to go. Even when he’s no longer on the Knicks he’s still screwing us.

  84. Yeah, as deep as the East is this eason the 6-8 seeds are all up for grabs. Knicks only 2 games behind the 6th seed and only 3 behind the Heat for the 5th seed but I assume in the end the Heat will comfortably finish in the Top 5 along with the Hawks, Raptors, Bulls and obviously the Cavs.

But the last 3 seeds in the East are definitely in play, don’t believe any of the teams 6th thru 12th will be able to pull away and make the playoffs comfortably.

  85. @227,
I asked for Fisher’s head for playing Vujacic. YOU brought up 21 shots.

    So, no, you tell me.
