2016-17 Game Thread: Knicks @ Heat

Pluses for the Knicks tonight – they’re terrible, the Heat are not terrible and the game is in Miami.

Negatives for the Knicks tonight – the Heat are not that good and it is hard to win both ends of a home and home.

Let’s hope that the Heat pull it out! The #4 spot in the draft is still up for grabs!

Let’s? Go Knicks!

Crazy how this team actually passes the ball when Melo and Rose are out

    Baffling!

Crazy how this team actually passes the ball when Melo and Rose are out

You’re stupid. The Triangle is obsolete!

  3. Silky Johnson, Fleet Admiral of the Tank Armada

Maybe Courtney should’ve been mega maxed rather than Melo

  4. thenoblefacehumper

Sitting Melo and Rose is a dangerous tanking game. I get it, since they’re both high variance, high usage players who are more likely than others to have really strong individual performances. Sitting them kind of takes away one or two win possibilities. Problem is they generally suck, so on average we’re probably better without them.

  5. Reub On Our Way To Greatness

Randall with a fearless drive among the trees followed by a nice steal. He looks pretty good.

  6. dtrickey

I would be happy re-signing Holiday for a reasonable contract. I can see him getting some nice offers from other teams, but if you get him back on something reasonable he could be a good value role player.

  7. #firePhilJackson

Dragic taking Baker to school.. can we trade GMs and coaches with Miami? Coach Spo squeezing the best out of that lineup

  8. Silky Johnson, Fleet Admiral of the Tank Armada

Yeah I think signing Holiday is a fine move for the right price

  9. DRed

I don’t think you need an advanced degree in coaching to tell Goran Dragic to go at the undrafted free agent rookie

That said, I think Spo should probably win coach of the year

  10. dtrickey

Best part of the game is that the offence is doing a good job finding KP so he isn’t forced to create his own shot. He looks soooooo much better when the team just gets him the ball in good position, and it’s frustrating because it’s soooo obvious that’s how he needs to be used at this stage of his career.

Baker looks like a legit rotation player tonight. Hopefully it’s development rather than just a random good half.

  12. Reub On Our Way To Greatness

I sent Baker a tweet message yesterday wishing him a happy birthday and throwing in a few pointers. You’re welcome.

  13. Silky Johnson, Fleet Admiral of the Tank Armada

I think Sasha has orders from the Premiere himself to Manchurian Candidate this team for the glory of the tank

  14. Reub On Our Way To Greatness

The best way to tank is to just miss free throws. Just ask the Magic.

  15. Nick C.

These guys have been so fun to watch I am having a hard time remembering I should be rooting for the Tank.

  16. ClashFan

Hard to imagine two more good quarters, though. Seems inevitable that either the 3rd or 4th quarter will see a collapse.

  17. Philmelo

Games like this make me think Willy is bonafide starter material even with his defensive lapses.

  18. Hugo Busto

Magic playing the Celtics tight. But we all know they will grasp defeat in the final moments

  19. DRed

KP gets deep post position off transition and the guard actually passes him the fucking basketball: easy bucket

  20. chrisk06811

whoever we draft, I just hope the neophyte is omnipotent, and can percolate. That’s all i ask

  21. Philmelo

KP needs to show a little more craft around the basket. He lacks Willy’s niftiness underneath.

  22. Reub On Our Way To Greatness

@50 KP hasn’t been under there all year so he’s still trying to figure out where he is.

  23. Philmelo

Love that possession by KP. He didn’t let that fucker take the ball from him in the post, dribbled the ball into the paint, and nailed the soft 2 pointer.

  24. cgreene

So basically the Knicks without Melo and Rose would have competed for a bottom playoff spot. Interesting.

  25. Reub On Our Way To Greatness

I saw some kind of a lob pass from Randle there. Is that a common shot around the league?

  26. thenoblefacehumper

Generally happy with Porzingis tonight but he’s missed some boards that definitely should’ve been his on both ends. Him and Willy could theoretically complement each other well if they could somehow make it work defensively…big if.

  27. cgreene

I would rather that than a higher pick if it meant better development for KP and Willy and maybe one of the guards.

  28. Reub On Our Way To Greatness

I do worry that Jonathon Isaac could be another NDour/Cleanthony type, always behind the play.

  29. ClashFan

Well, so much for a 2nd half collapse. Very fun game to watch. Looks like everyone is trying real hard, esp. on D.

  30. Philmelo

Holiday is playing really really well. Makes me wonder how he could have languished on our bench for so long.

  31. geo

we need a mean willy next year…i guess it’s hard to look angry when you look that damn smooth…

  32. geo

just realized what an absolutely wonderful thing it is to watch the knicks without our two stars…

  33. dtrickey

If we had have played with a lineup like this all year and we ended up with the same record, I would be okay with that. Very fun. Everyone playing hard on both ends.

  34. Philmelo

The most underrated aspect of our offense tonight has been the pretty good screens Willy and KP have been setting on Heat defenders all night long. I am very proud of that development because its an aspect that both (mostly KP) have been weak on.

  35. Nick C.

Ordinarily I would be so psyched about Courtney Lee the last few possessions. At least he won’t be a drag on the team’s progress next season

  36. Reub On Our Way To Greatness

I’m disappointed by Johnson’s missed free throw there but oh that blond behind their bench!

  37. Nick C.

What was that thing Baker did when he drove to the basket. It looked like the ball went out of his hands to an open teammate. Are they allowed to do that

  38. Philmelo

KP has looked like he wants to truck over the official after a bad call at least 5 times tonight.

  39. geo

i do like jeff a bunch as a person, but, a lot of this inconsistency talk in regards to rotations, offense, effort has to go on him to a certain degree…

granted, he doesn’t exactly have the easiest job in the league, but, it really felt like he trying to figure things out all year…

  40. Hugo Busto

A team fighting for a playoff spot loses to a team missing 2 of its “best players” plus lance Thomas

Unreal. The most knicksy thing ever

  41. Philmelo

Would have preferred the loss but this doesn’t sting so bad. Our youngsters beat a playoff team that was legitimately playing hot basketball the past two months. Its alright.

  42. DRed

A team fighting for a playoff spot loses to a team missing 2 of its “best players” plus lance Thomas

    Unreal.

The future is bright with all our young talent!

  43. dtrickey

Savvy coaching and play from Lee on that last inbounds. I know it hurts the tank but this has been good to see from this group. Always a chance to split these games

  44. Philmelo

If a team plays a motion offense it doesn’t need a ball dominant point guard. Give me Ntilikina and I am happy.

  45. nicos

Justin Holiday with the big fourth quarter- too bad we can’t trade him for a first like Timmy.

  46. Silky Johnson, Fleet Admiral of the Tank Armada

Forget about Ball, we better hope we’re in position to draft Fox come the end of the year.

Still think we’re going to be the 5 or 6 pick tho.

  47. ClashFan

The Goddess Fortuna owes us. As does Adam Silver. We’ll be getting a magic ping pong ball.

  48. Philmelo

I am not that in love with Fox so I guess I am fine with us going down in the draft order. Guys like Jonathan Isaac and Frank Ntilikina are what I see fitting this team better.

  49. Bruno Almeida

well, I was fine with Ntilikina in the first place anyway…

this game has shown this team can’t afford to rest Me7o so much if they want ping pong balls.

  50. Hugo Busto

Yea but PhilMelo I know we agree on one thing and that’s Lonzo. And our chances just took a hit.

Hard for me to feel happy about this W. Just hoping Adam silver does the right thing :)

  51. thenoblefacehumper

We should be okay until the Sixers game while they have to play the Nets between now and then…though they did just shut down Covington. Ugh. Anyway, best case scenario is probably being tied going into that game and gearing up for an epic tank war.

  52. thenoblefacehumper

The Kings play the Wolves, Mavs, Lakers, and Suns. We can definitely fend them off assuming we don’t do anything stupid, so we probably won’t fend them off.

The three realistic choices I was cool with were Fox, Ntilikina and Isaac, but still, dropping to #6 or #7 would still suck, especially since it hurts their odds at getting to #2 for Ball.

  54. Philmelo

Seriously though, if this offense can generate 7 assists for Sasha Vujecic and 6 assists for Ron Baker then any competent guard with good basketball instincts can run it and be a productive facilitator. Ntilikina would fit in perfectly.

    It’s one game dude

  56. Hugo Busto

You know who sucks these days… Tony Parker. He’s been looking washed up recently. Really curious to see what Popovitch decides to do come playoff time

  57. Philmelo

Whatever. The point is that this game illustrates how the Triangle offense generates tons of assist opportunities for ball handlers if everyone buys in and executes. The problem is that we need to replace guys like Sasha Vujacec, Maurice Ndour and Ron Baker with better offensive material.

  58. KnickfaninNJ

ugh, where the hell is all this defense coming from…the heat won’t score a 100…

Maybe because no Melo and no Rose?

  59. JK47

Any time you think there might be some pathway for this team to escape the Sisyphean treadmill of mediocrity, reality just punches you in the face.

  60. Hugo Busto

Honestly Hornacek needed to make some tank substitutions in the final 5 minutes of the game. Sub Ndour for Kristaps. Easy.

Its like he cant win we want to and cant lose when we want to.

  61. Philmelo

I just realized this W was a perfect April Fools Day gift from the team to its fans.
