    1. Do or die Game 7 tonight in what has been a pretty terrible finals (and playoffs). I only enjoyed Games 5-7 of the Western Conference Finals. But gun to my head? Give me Golden State. Home team, baby.

    2. It looks like a real toss up even with GSW at home. The Warriors injuries and their recent sub par play even things out considerably. It is hard to bet against Lebron in a closeout game, especially the way he’s been playing the last few games. Hopefully it’s close so we can all enjoy a good final game to the season.

    3. Yeah it really is a toss up, but I’m sort of sick of hot take society. People really are saying Steph Curry isn’t the MVP anymore like he didn’t just singlehandedly make basketball must see TV this season. He just had the best offensive season in modern era basketball, and people are acting like he’s fried fish or something. Not only that, but Klay Thompson can literally go off for 20 points in 5 minutes at any time.

All it takes is for one of those guys to get hot. Neither has really had to shoulder the load of a team that was broken down like these Warriors, but nobody told them winning a championship would be easy. It should be interesting, but I’m running with the Warriors until somebody takes their crown. I don’t see these guys losing 3 in a row.

    4. You know what nobody is talking about? What does Golden State do if they lose the championship this season? Do they trade off some players in pursuit of Kevin Durant? Do they pay Harrison Barnes (they need to let him walk no matter the cost)? It should be an interesting off season for a lot of teams.

    5. My head says it’s going to be nearly impossible for Cleveland to take three straight from GS, with two coming on the road, even if the Warriors are starting to break down physically.

But I have come to enjoy being able to root for LeBron as an underdog again and I hope he can muster his third straight otherworldly performance in what has got to be the biggest game of his career and possibly his best change to win one for Cleveland.

    6. Yeah, it’d be amazing for Cleveland to win, but under Kerr, the Warriors have never lost three games in a row. I doubt that’ll change in the NBA Finals. The odds are just too low. I’d love to see it happen, and obviously it could happen, but the odds are so low that I’m pretty much resigned myself to a GS win tonight.

    7. If GS does lose, how tough of pill would it be to swallow knowing they got to the finals by overcoming a 3-1 game deficit only to lose a 3-1 game lead?

    8. Happy Father’s Day to all of you dads out there. I have 2 sons.

Yeah, if GS loses, they might get a big choker label from the media.

    9. it will be interesting if GS loses. They may decide to free up cash and go for Durant. Harry Barnes sure has cost himself a lot of $$

    10. You know what nobody is talking about? What does Golden State do if they lose the championship this season? Do they trade off some players in pursuit of Kevin Durant? Do they pay Harrison Barnes (they need to let him walk no matter the cost)? It should be an interesting off season for a lot of teams.

The three people they’d have to lose are Bogut, Livingston and Barnes to make the max Durant salary work.

Barnes is not worth the money he’s being offered. He played like garbage this year (after a big stride in 2014-15) and the small sample of the playoffs has been pretty abysmal. Bogut is either going to give you 500 MP or 1500 MP over the next few seasons and is still a perfect fit for the way this team is built. (They will miss him in Game 7, and it should be a bigger narrative than it has been.) Livingston is the best bench player they have, but there is no one alive who would argue that he’s more important than Durant would be.

So between Ezeli leaving and having to let go of those three players, you’re looking at the possibility that the Warriors do get worse over 82 games next season with Durant. However, their playoff depth will be much better and I could see them sweeping through teams in the playoffs. Curry, Durant and Thompson would probably make the best 1-2-3 combination in league history. Switch Durant to PF and Green to C and slide Iguodala to 3 and you have a starting 5 as good as anything we’ve ever seen in the NBA.

Two MVPs still in their prime with three All-NBA Defensive Team players behind them. And Iguodala would be the oldest player at 33. Kind of insane to think that it could happen. And then maybe they add another player with the $94M cap the following year.

    11. Does durant have enough social currency to goto the warriors withput getting blasted like lebron?

    12. And as somebody in his 20s, I must say how much fun it would be to torture people with the Warriors in 2K17 if Durant signs with the Warriors. There’s no way they will actually win 73+ games with that team, but Durant, Curry, and Thompson will make 1000 3s together. And Durant would actually play in a great offense instead of the isolation garbage he’s been running in OKC his whole career.

    13. Durant would be a lazy coward to join the Warriors. It would show that all he cares about is winning and not the important things.

    14. Scratch that; Deng is still useful. I wonder if he has any desire to play for the Knicks

    15. The draft is this Thursday! It’s starting and we’re going to be great!

Is there a punchline I’m missing here?

    16. Z, this has been known to be a place of pessimism. I just wanted people to know that there’s light at the end of the tunnel for the Knicks. That’s all.

Alecto, KD would just be jumping onto a team that wins without him anyway so he’d just be along for the ride, counting his money. That’s not very impressive in my eyes.

Jowles, it takes one to know one.

    17. Z, this has been known to be a place of pessimism. I just wanted people to know that there’s light at the end of the tunnel for the Knicks. That’s all.

But the Knicks don’t have a draft pick on Thursday. Because of Andrea Bargnani. You kind of have to give the pessimists their day for that. (Then there can be light :)

    18. Just sit back and watch Phil work his magic. Remember he has more rings than fingers.

    19. Just sit back and watch Phil work his magic.

I’ve been watching his magic pretty regularly over the past 2 years. He’s somewhere between Uri Geller and Burt Wonderstone.

    20. I’ve been watching his magic pretty regularly over the past 2 years. He’s somewhere between Uri Geller and Burt Wonderstone.

This made me genuinely laugh out loud.

    21. I fumed at LeBron for going to Miami, but I’m more excited and supportive for KD to GSW. Especially after THCJ’s speculative breakdown. I am currently very reflective about this apparent contradiction in my heart.

    22. 22 years ago the Knicks were involved in a Game 7 of the NBA Finals. Unfortunately we all know how that went. Hopefully for the players playing tonight none of them have a John Starks nightmare Game 7 performance. Although there sure would be some fun hot takes if either LeBron or Curry have a nightmare Game 7 especially LeBron.

    23. Hopefully for the players playing tonight none of them have a John Starks nightmare Game 7 performance. Although there sure would be some fun hot takes if either LeBron or Curry have a nightmare Game 7.

Unfortunately for the ’94 Knicks, John Starks was no LeBron James or Steph Curry. (You may see JR Smith and Iman Shumpert combine for a sweet 2-20, though)

    24. Halfway through almost and I don’t know who I want to win. Strange spot to be in in the NBA Finals…

    25. Is this a fair statement?

Draymond Green belongs in or very near the same stratosphere that Chuck is in.

They both dominate/dominated the league in their own way at around 6’6″, though Green isn’t dominant in the ways Barkley was. I guess what I’m trying to say is Green needs to be respected even more than he is. Dude’s legit. I thought that him as a small-ball 4/5 was a phase that wouldn’t last, but he has been consistently really good.

    26. Draymond Green has 22 points on 8-10 with 5-5 from 3, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists.

      What a player.

    27. Draymond Green has 22 points on 8-10 with 5-5 from 3, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists.

      What a player.

If he had played in game 5, we wouldn’t be watching basketball tonight

    28. I love Draymond. But I think he’ll end up more high end Anthony Mason than a Chuck. But with better teammates.

    29. He’s built like a skinny Chuck lol. 6’6″ 240 with crazy wingspan. Chuck was a way better leaper though. Green gets his boards more off of positioning. It’s crazy watchin him play just like it was watchin Chuck in Philly.

    30. They are missing Bogut. Goddamn I hate Anderson Varejao. Putting him on this team is just so bad for the aesthetics of basketball…

    31. Uh oh..let’s hope Kyrie doesn’t go into Uncle Drew mode. He does that and it’s probably over for the Dubs- they’ve got no one that can guard him

    32. So we’ve seen a four point play by Shumpert and JR hit a couple back to back 3s. Hmm….

    33. Lue taking out both Kyrie and Love might be the bonehead move of the year as GS immediately takes the lead.

    34. if this Finals comes down to the last possession the basketball nerd in me is going to ejaculating

    35. neither of these teams deserves to lose though, this really is a matchup with the best two teams in the NBA

    36. neither of these teams deserves to lose though, this really is a matchup with the best two teams in the NBA

It really was excellent. Awesome game. Crazy ending. Congrats to Lebron on one of the most historic achievements in NBA history.

    37. Wow. Cleveland won. The curse is broken.

      LeBron is immortalized.

You know what? I was rooting for the Warriors, but Cleveland has suffered long enough. It was about time.

    38. Whelp, there goes that Cle/Bos/NYK dream trade scenario. Boy am I glad I didn’t put money on this one; I cannot believe that just happened.

    39. That was such an ugly shot by Irving, too. Hilarious.

And yeah, that’s Lebron in a nutshell – the dude can score, rebound, pass and pull out defensive plays like that amazing block. Un-real.

    40. I always like to see road underdogs win. The stunned crowd all in identical shirts, etc. Even better is if you are in the crowd rooting for the road team that wins, as I’ve had the opportunity to do a few times.

Well, so now will Lebron try to put together the Good Ship Lollipop?

    41. I didn’t pick them..but mad respect for LBJ & company right now. He deserves this one. But wooooowwwww…73 wins and no chip? What’s next for the dubs?

    42. Whelp, there goes that Cle/Bos/NYK dream trade scenario. Boy am I glad I didn’t put money on this one; I cannot believe that just happened.

I dunno, now that they won their title, I almost think that they’ll be more open to dealing Love. They have nothing to prove any more. They made the Love deal, they won the title in hid second year there, who can give them shit about the trade now? So now they can move on from Love, if they want to (I don’t even think they necessarily should, though. The dude is a liability against, like, one specific great team. That’s not really a reason to get rid of a good player).

    43. The summer of tear Curry a new one will now be televised. Congrats Cleveland.

This will be the first time he’ll face national scrutiny and criticism. He didn’t rise to the occasion, he played sloppy. Kyrie outplayed him and hit unbelievable shots. LeBron had many flashes of “I ain’t losing this”. Hell, even K.Love was out their grinding hard. Let’s see how he responds.

    44. Damn, World Champion J.R. Smith. I never thought I would say those words before.

Lots of crazy World Champ guys now.

      Richard Jefferson – world champion
      Iman Shumpert – world champion
      Kevin Love – world champion
      Mo Williams – world champion
      Channing Frye – world champion
      Timofey Mozgov – world champion
      Dahntay Jones – world champion

    45. Damn, World Champion J.R. Smith. I never thought I would say those words before.

hahahaahahahahaaha!!! I know, right? What kinda bizarre world do we live in where Earl gets a chip before Melo?

    46. Curry with the behind the back turnover and forced quick 3’s down the stretch, plain bad. They are just so careless with the basketball sometimes with their showboating. When it works it looks awesome, but too many times it leads to wasted possessions. Lebron was off the charts the last three games after looking terrible the first two. That 3 by Kyrie was huge and sealed it . Props to Cleveland, they held GSW to 89 points and deserve to win.

    47. I also think Golden State is going to embarrass Cleveland in the Finals next year. I expect it to happen the same way San Antonio went berserk on LeBron in 2014.

    48. What’s more shocking? Cleveland winning or Richard Jefferson being a key part of their rotation at age 76?

    49. Larry Drew won a championship. Usher won a championship. Dan Gilbert won a championship. This is all a travesty.

    50. LBJ fulfills one dream by winning one for Cleveland and now should fulfill another by paddling the banana boat to L.A. What can we get for Blake in a three team deal?

    51. I also think Golden State is going to embarrass Cleveland in the Finals next year. I expect it to happen the same way San Antonio went berserk on LeBron in 2014.

No no no no no….Earl won a chip, so it’s a bizarro world, remember? So…it’ll be…let’s see….umm..Lakers led by a fully reinvented D’Angelo Russell averaging 25-5-5 versus our Knicks led by a close-to-2013-form-reinvigorated-Melo, with the Knicks winning in game 7 on a last second 25 footer by Calderon

    52. Steph not blowing by Kevin Love on that last possession was some of the dumbest decision making I’ve ever seen, let alone from the MVP. Golden State is so obsessed with getting off 3’s it makes it easier for the defense when they’re playing them straight up.

I really think Golden State will be running down Kevin Durant in 3 weeks.

You know, them losing the Finals, might actually push them towards actually trying to get him.

Sure you have to drop/move Barnes, Iguodola, and either Speights or Ezili, but you’d have to make that move if you’re GS. Especially if Durant wants to leave.

Yeah, hunting for threes really hurt them. That and Lebron going bananas.

    55. Prior to tonight’s finals game LeBron ranked first in points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks by all players in the series. He deserved the MVP even if Cleveland had lost. He’s pretty good, and trust me I’m not a fan of his. MJ had many, many 9-24 or similarly bad shooting nights and is still ranked by many the best ever.

    56. How’s it goink?

I literally LOL’ed at this. Thank you for that.

It was pretty hilarious that Steph Curry could not figure out a way to get his team a basket with Kevin Love guarding him out at the three point line. Steph’s mental toughness is a little bit lacking honestly. He lost his cool in game 6 and made some really bad mistakes in game 7. He doesn’t have that ice in his veins that guys like Jordan have.

    57. @97 We, the Hot Take jury, have reached a verdict. Steph Curry: NOT A ROUGH RYDER.

    58. Here’s a collection of facts about the series that I collected from NBA twitter (mainly Haberstroh and Herring)

After being down the largest 0-2 deficit in NBA Finals history, LeBron James then averaged 33.2 pts, 11.8 rebs and 8.8 ast to get the title.

LeBron James led all players on both teams in points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks in series. He is the first player in NBA history to lead all players in all five categories for an entire playoff series.

LeBron James becomes second player in NBA history with a Finals Gm 7 triple-double (27 pts, 11 reb, 11 ast), joining James Worthy in 1988.

The Warriors didn’t score in the final 4:30 of the game.

Two back to back 41 point games for LeBron.

Cleveland wins first NBA championship in 52 years.

Cleveland is the first team in NBA history to come back from a 1-3 deficit to win the Finals.
LeBron James has never missed a playoff game. in his 199th playoff game, he clinches Cleveland a championship.

      LeBron at 31: 3 rings, 4 MVPs
      Jordan at 31: 3 rings, 3 MVPs

PS: JR Smith is an NBA champion
PPS: JR Smith is going to meet Obama at the White House

    59. It was somewhat fitting that the Warriors’ last shot of the 2015-16 was a Mo Speights brick.

    60. The old time Knicks would have doubled Lebron instead of allowing him to control the offense so easily. Bad coaching.

    61. Whoa…JR in the post-game press conference…wow. I think I’m officially done clowning him. That was some powerful stuff.

    62. I think the Warriors learned their lesson this season. They had a great year and were easily the most fun team I’ve ever witnessed in my 10-15 years of watching basketball, but they make a lot of unforced errors when they’re passing the ball. Nobody really loses the ball off the dribble in Golden State; they just make terrible passes. Steph behind the back or Draymond cross court or they’ll throw it ahead for it to be stolen. I feel like they get too hot and don’t listen to Steve Kerr at times. They’re an impatient and flashy bunch with no real leader. I wish Steph would be more selfish sometimes and just break people down the way Kyrie Irving does. It seems like the Warriors seldom isolate and that is dumb when you have the world’s greatest offensive basketball player. Steph can get by anybody. Nobody can stay in front of him. Sometimes it pays to just clear out and let him embarrass guys. They’re still young and have another 7 years of Steph, Clay and Draymond so I think they still end up winning 3 or 4 when it’s all said and done.

    63. Sure you have to drop/move Barnes, Iguodola, and either Speights or Ezili, but you’d have to make that move if you’re GS. Especially if Durant wants to leave.

Barnes, Livingston and Bogut makes it work.

    64. JR gave one of the best sports speeches that I have ever seen. Kudos to him. Glad he’s grown as a man..

      Edit

I should say in a sports setting….it was heartfelt as hell

    65. People really want to see Durant on GS?

I do. Forget the Death Lineup — a group with Durant and Green at the 4/5 is a global pandemic lineup.

    66. [ruruland stands outside THCJ’s house]

[raises boombox over head; presses play]

      [“In Your Eyes”]

    67. Classic game! LeBron just cemented his name in the GOAT discussion. Seriously, take him off that team and do they even make the playoffs?

And while I don’t hate the Warriors, it is somewhat gratifying to me that they lost. I never thought they were an all-time great team.

Are the Warriors are the first and only NBA team to lose as many games in the playoffs as they did during the regular season? That’s a record that may never be broken!
