In the Basketball Gods We Trust: The 2015 NBA Draft Open Thread

We’re less than fifteen minutes away from the start of the 2015 NBA Draft. Things are still so up in the air that I honestly couldn’t tell you who the Knicks will end up with tonight. Whoever it is, I think I can at least guarantee one simple thing – that it will be interesting.

Let’s go Knicks!

  1. This is the first real test for Phil. Let’s hope Cpt Luke was wrong all those months.

  2. i gotta say… this has been the wildest draft season in memory…. no matter what happens….

  3. Wiz kalifa on ESPN. Can’t end soon enough. Let’s get this draft started please

  4. Ok4 to NY isn’t a huge stretch anymore with LMA and others opting out. Please no fat eddy 2

  5. Chad Ford’s last mock that they just showed has us getting Okafor. I don’t see that happening

  6. So we all agree Towns is going first? Or do we see Flip throwing a curveball and going Okafor?

  7. boston supposedly has a webber/herschel walker type of deal ready for sixers if the lakers pass…. so it’s not a slam dunk… and i do think the sixers take okafor either way… but wow … all sorts of things can happenl…

  8. The key to happiness.
Take a deep breath. Close your eyes.
Now, in rich sensual detail visualize yourself hearing the news: Somehow Towns has miraculously fallen to the Knicks.
Then, just seconds later, the deal: A spectacular 3-way trade with Minny and LA.
The Knicks lose Towns, Galloway and all the future picks they can legally offer.
In return they get Kobe, Nick Young, and Anthony Bennett.
Feel the nausea. Savor the metallic sensation in the back of your mouth as you gasp for oxygen. Let it come down. Let the last inklings of hope escape from you like bubbles rising to the surface of the water far above. Settle gently into the silt and sand as cold night leans over and closes your eyelids.

There. Now, no matter what happens, it’ll feel better than that.

  9. I’m talking myself into ok4.
    If he drops past LA.
Which means of course Phillie will grab

  10. Thanks @17 I now feel extra anxious because I could see Knicks doing exactly that

  11. I guess we won’t be seeing Bill Simmons tonight? :-)

I miss him at these NBA events. When the Cavs won last year’s lottery, his reaction was awesome.

  12. Yeah, Bill Simmons is/was awesome at live events. As corny as he has become, he still has value in sheer bro showmanship.

  13. What time does Minnesota officially go on the clock? Then Knicks pick, what, 15 mins later?

  14. I love Ford putting up a new mock draft five minutes before the draft. What a weirdo. I expect him to put up a new mock draft after the fifth pick, to show he got them all correct. ;)

  15. Is BS tweeting or something tonight? It’s gotta be killing him not to be a part of this.

  16. My son is trying to talk me into Mudiay.

He’ll be at least a rotation player. He’s not a bad player. He’s just unlikely to be a star, and obviously we were all hoping for a star when the Knicks had the second worst record in the NBA in a draft with at least three stars in it. As far as consolation prizes go, he is not bad at all.

  17. This ESPN guy’s got me believing that Minny will have the best team in the league next year!

  18. I’ll be honest. Frank would be pretty fun to cheer for. Not that I want him at 4

  19. I think that Mudiay has star potential, it rides on what’s between the ears and an ability to hit big shots. He definitely has star physical talent and ball skills.

  20. I’m gonna throw up. And I have to poop. This draft has made me physically ill.

  21. I think that Mudiay has star potential, it rides on what’s between the ears and an ability to hit big shots. He definitely has star physical talent and ball skills.

Oh sure, he definitely has star potential, just not at likely to reach it as the first three guys.

  22. This pisses me off. The scroll says “Source: Kings owner considering firing Karl.” The actual article has the source saying that he “considered” firing Karl. I personally would fire Karl, but the scroll is wrong .

  23. Names i will be OK hearing, in order:
    Okafor
    Russell
    Mudiay
    Cauley-Stein
    Porzingis
    Winslow

  24. Just want to say, before I kill any decision the Knicks make, that I wouldn’t want to make this pick. I would take WCS (though the scuttlebutt about his foot gives me a little pause) but I have to admit, it’s a tough decision. Unless we take Frank Kaminsky. In which case I won’t watch a game all next year.

  25. I’m a poor man, so Killian’s for me. The wife is stalking about…angry about something, but my sons are busily engaged. Let’s go@

  26. Biggest draft in years, and I’m stuck in Serbia!!! (great city, but of all times!?!?). I’m trying to listen/watch live, and I’m getting nowhere. It’s 1AM, I’m drunk, and waiting to hear what happens. Thank God for this site to keep me off a ledge..

  27. Hey hey, I started this drinking trend tonight. Give respect where it’s due.

(On multiple Bloody Marys, too. I fear the thought of going to the bathroom tomorrow morning)

  28. There are so many good paths the Knicks can take. Why am I so sure we’ll find the bust?

Gotta say, most of the outfits these guys are wearing would make Clyde proud.

Dreaming: The Lakers trade the #2 overall pick and next year’s 2nd rounder for Carmelo Anthony.
The Knicks select Okafor. Philadelphia selects Mudiay with the #3 pick. The Knicks select Russell with the #4 pick.

Nightmare: The Knicks draft Mudiay with the #4. They trade him to Phoenix Suns for the #13 and Eric Bledsoe. The Knicks select Frank Kaminsky.

  29. Don’t know. I’m following the draft on multiple pages… SB Nation’s one has Towns to the Wolves since at least 4 minutes ago.

  30. People would not have laughed at you if someone said Towns over Okafor in February, dummies.

  31. Come on guys! Just make those damn picks, I want to go to bed! It’s 1:40 AM here!

  32. We want Russell, we were supposed to pick 2nd, therefore the Lakers will take him.

    Knicks.

  33. Ok, you were right, Russell got picked. Philly on the feeding frenzy. I say Okafor goes to Boston.

  34. I guess Hinkie is on bath salts. The guy he (probably) wanted has already been picked, so he can wheel and deal like there’s no tomorrow.

  35. Lagavulin is the truth….

    And color me surprised…

I can feel my dread building….

  36. Sixers SHOULD just pick Mudiay. He’s a great fit, great need, and many people think he’ll be better than Russell.

But you know Hinkie’s going to get cute.

  37. Guys, we’re nearing our pick. But we need to be aware that is possible that the guy is not who we’ll end with.

  38. Crap, could Chad Ford actually be right? Do Sixers go Mudiay? There was talk that the Embiid injury was a smoke screen.

  39. I refuse to get my hopes up that Okafor could drop to us.

HOLY SHIT OKAFOR COULD DROP TO US!

  40. everything that they’ve done up until now suggests okafor…. but.. oh man .. i would want to see the sixer war room right now…

  41. I can see Hinkie drafting Porzingis. He’s the guy who has at least one third of the NBA drooling.

  42. The problem is that the Sixers could make a trade and probably still end up with a guard.

  43. Phew– Russell seems like a douchebag. Especially following Townes, who was radiant in his post selection interview.

  44. Russell is cocky, but I don’t mind that. I think he will be loved in L.A. I think that pick seems more like they think they’re adding a big man.

  45. Is there enough room for Kobe and Russell in the Laker locker room? I mean for their egos.

  46. Can you believe they’re trolling us so hard right now with this tribute NOW?!?

They somehow still managed to give us a gut punch. Amazing.

  47. I bet this will be Chad Ford’s newest mock draft – “I meant that it would be Towns/Russell/Okafor.” He is the worst.

  48. Woj says the Knicks are taking Porzingis. Im going to go outside and maybe kill myself….

  49. What kind of dickhead updates his mock draft five minutes before the draft and is still somehow wrong?

  50. If we had any questions if Okafor will be good, he was picked one slot before the Knicks.

    He’s a Hall of Famer

  51. I think Okafor and Porzingas have matching suits. What do the analytics say about that?

  52. What kind of dickhead updates his mock draft five minutes before the draft and is still somehow wrong?

The one who retroactively updates his past mock drafts hoping no one will see the difference.

  53. The crowd reaction to Zinger will be hilarious. Oh well, I can live with him.

  54. The crowd reaction to Zinger will be hilarious. Oh well, I can live with him.

    Nah, we will trade him.

  55. Went BPA with Kristaps. Ok. Think he’s getting traded. Magic take Winslow.

    ….or ‘Melo gets traded.

  56. Don’t get excited on Porzingis. He won’t don our uni any time soon. I can see him being traded.

  57. Bargs 2.0. Whatever, I can deal with it I guess. Please don’t be Bargs 2.0 though.

  58. Whoa, Magic were super quick. It’s Mario.

SB Nation’s draft tracker is just all over the place.

  59. I like the pick and think he is going to be good, roll the dice man. We should be playing for the future man and this is a good pick

  60. I kind of hope we keep him. It would raise the odds of Melo demanding a trade by the all star break and making us rebuild for real.

You are forgetting the free agents

  61. A few weeks ago a friend of mine who is a huge basketball player and geek told me that the Knicks should take him. This way ahead of all the media stuff. Well, they did.

Let’s see if they keep him. Shame on the idiots booing him.

  62. I wanted Winslow. Zinger doesn’t rebound, and that’s a liability, and you have to wonder whether he’ll ever be able to rebound at a competent level.

  63. He did put up good numbers in Euroleague, but…

Nope, it’s Eurocup. And that is a sad sack of a competition.

  64. OK, as with Shump, my balls are on the chopping block because I lobbied for him first. Bottoms up!

  65. Well Porzingas shows they’re building beyond Melo, or hoping he will demand a trade.

  66. BREAKING: “Very likely” David West will sign with Knicks according to Hoopshype?! Huh?!?!

  67. I guess I’ve gotta give props to Phil for having the guts to select Zinger. Definitely not a safe pick

  68. Hezonja to Orlando. Nice. Sactown has to go with Winslow to pair with Collison in the backcourt.

  69. Would love to know what Melo is thinking right now.

What can I buy LaLa with next year’s 23 millions?

  70. His English is good; that’s worth something, right?

This is literally the only thing that has me hopeful for him (if we keep him).

  71. I’m just worried about how long it will take for Zinger to develop. By the way, the boos just sucked. Welcome to NY.

  72. Nuggets get Mudiay. I say trade.

That said, I go to bed. I bet that I won’t be awake with Kristaps on our roster.

  73. Mixed feelings.

On the plus side, I think it shows us that phil has no delusions about this team being able to compete with Melo in the next 1-2 years.

But the cupboard is so bare, I think we needed to go with a less risky player like WCS or Winslow. I would’ve taken the double, but I can’t kill Phil for swinging for the fences.

  74. We’re f*cked as usual. I was hoping for something better than “He’ll probably be great in 2-4 years”….

  75. WCS to Sacto. Wow, Winslow n’ Mudiay are falling. Denver goes for one of ’em.

  76. so i guess at this point we can safely assume that clarence gaines is jackson’s draft guy….

  77. I kind of hope we keep him. It would raise the odds of Melo demanding a trade by the all star break and making us rebuild for real.

    Good point.

  78. Remember like 20 minutes ago, when we all thought we might get Okafor? Those were heady times.

  79. I now want Zinger just for the ballsiness of it all.

Phil being ballsy? Or Phil being too cute?

Looks like we’re tanking another season, boys.

  80. So David West and Greg Monroe? I guess no Melo at the 4.

Monroe at the 5, West at the 4, Porzingis at the 3, Melo at the 2… Cold Aldrich at 1.

  81. David West is washed up. He’s gonna be 35, and his production fell off considerably last season after many years of consistent solid play.

  82. knicks are going to regret not picking
    -WCS
    -Mudiay
    -Hersonja
    -Justice
. . . oh, but Porzingis is good for triangle.

Can’t wait till hear phil’s explanation.

  83. Yeah, I can’t see David West. He turned down $12.6 million? What is he expecting to sign for?

    Nah, sign Monroe and Green/Carroll.

  84. IDK man, Zinger is long as hell…

Same length as Thabeet with way more athleticism and a sweet stroke. Plus you know he’s been ballin’ since about 4 months old, and he seems to love the game.

    I’m pumped for the guy.

  85. Oh I see now…

Players always use NYC in contract negotiations. To get their price up!

    Thanks what West is doing.

  86. ZMan — I’m with you. I love the pick. I sure hope we’re right. By the way, the Barclay’s Center is a crummy arena. Dark, cramped, stands way too steep. I don’t like it at all.

  87. Mudiay to Nuggets. Trade alert! Pistons take Winslow.

Really? Woj is reporting Stanley Johnson.

  88. That’s my guess. if they’re going Johnson…we buy in high and snatch Winslow?

  89. Watching and rooting for the knicks to lose almost every game for this?
After Phil went on and on about getting a guy that’s NBA ready, he picks a guy that’s the opposite of that. Not the first time Phil has misled knicks fans.

  90. Yep. Johnson to the Pistons. Will anyone grab Justise? Kinda feeling bad for the kid. IMHO, just glad we didn’t grab Lyles or Kaminsky.

  91. I’m on Team Porzingis. With the fourth pick, I think you have to choose someone who has the potential to be among the elite at their position, and not someone with a very visible ceiling. And I don’t think we’re talking about someone who’s very raw. He’s been playing (and playing very well) in the second best basketball league in the world, unlike Militic or Tshcikitivili, who never got off the bench on their teams.

And his game translates really nicely to the modern NBA offense. We need floor spacers and guys who can protect the rim. Being 7’2″ means he’ll do that, just by being 7’2″. He’s not great on defense, but through schemes and video, the path to get him to be average or above is much shorter than the path to get Cauley-Stein, for example, to average on offense.

Look, every rookie is going to struggle next year. Wiggins had a below average PER, for crissakes. I just think this guy, with the right coaching and support*, can be something very special faster than we expect.

    * – I’d feel better about “right coaching and support” if this were any other team and organization.

  92. Wow, Johnson ahead of Winslow. You can definitely make a case that SJ is the better prospect.

  93. Never seen so many white people in New York chanting “We want justice.”

I think this is probably the 6th year running that Thomas B has the line of the draft thread.

  94. So, the next Knicks story? Can they buy a late 1st rounder? Reportedly several teams want to jettison late firsts.

  95. So Phil thinks Porzingis is the next Pau Gasol. If he actually becomes Pau Gasol in 2 years, are we all OK with that?

  96. Oh my god, if we trade for David West. C’mon, somone is trolling us right? Is that a joke?

  97. Stan over Winslow, I think the height hurt him and playing out of position too.

  98. So Phil thinks Porzingis is the next Pau Gasol. If he actually becomes Pau Gasol in 2 years, are we all OK with that?

OK with another Pau Gasol? I think that would probably be OK. :)

  99. Pretty impressed with Zingers interview. He said all the right things. He handled the boos well.

  100. Gotta love the Heat getting Winslow at #10. Riley really does live a charmed life.

  101. I’m happily surprised the Knicks did eggzactly what I thought they should do. They drafted the best remaining player on the board instead of trying to get cute or worry about dumass fan reactions just becuz a guy is European.

Short of Towns himself, I really like the Porzingis pick. At the very least I think he’s going to be a solid rotation player. Though that being said he’s young and still filling out and I expect his first year to be rough and boo filled. But cum years 2-3 and I think he’ll be a nice return on investment (assuming they have the patience to actually keep him).

  102. Isola has a field day constantly mocking the Knicks on Twitter but he’s actually defending the Zinger pick tonight.

  103. Kaminsky will be a decent player. Would’ve been terrible with the number 4, but still ahead of Winslow???

  104. Dtrickey – Totally agree. Great interview. Said exactly the right things and got me a little excited about him. Good wsj article too whoever posted that.

  105. So Phil thinks Porzingis is the next Pau Gasol. If he actually becomes Pau Gasol in 2 years, are we all OK with that?

Is there some Zen meditation technique that will allow Porzingis to magically put on 30 lbs. without disrupting his entire lifetime’s worth of acquired skills and approach to the game?

  106. How good is the NBA’s PED testing program? I say let’s get the Zinger on the juice.

  107. Why do people keep talking about weight, do people remember what dirk, kg, pau and noah looked like when they came into the league. The league has a way to “magically” put weight on people hahahah

  108. Zinger seems like a much better outside shooter than Gasol, but not nearly as ready to be a post force.

  109. I’m a very risk averse guy. I couldn’t have made this pick. But guys like me never make big scores. Phil swung for the fences. That how you win big. Now let’s hope he’s right.

  110. Dtrickey – Totally agree. Great interview. Said exactly the right things and got me a little excited about him. Good wsj article too whoever posted that.

Loved the “dirty work” line. He’s growing on me for sure.

  111. Love the pick especially if WCS’s ankle and foot issues were red flagged by medical.

Funny how Rudy Gobert who is roughly the same height and weight didn’t have any problem adapting to the physicality of the NBA…after a year or two.

This is a pick that no recent Knicks GM or president would’ve had the balls to make. That in itself is a good sign.

  112. Pozingis is 7′, white and European, so he’s going to be Pau Gasol.
Couldn’t they find a tall, blonde haired guy from the midwest. Then, we can say we go the next Larry Bird?

  113. Cant wait to see the Big 3 of Galloway-Early-Zinger dominate Summer League in Vegas.

  114. Yeah I’m not as mad as I was 15 mins ago. I guess they had to swing for the fences sigh

  115. Gobert was also not much of a rebounder in Euro ball, but has developed into a strong rebounder in the NBA.

  116. I’m not mad but I’m certainly not excited at all but I’ll be rooting like hell for Zinger and will hope for the best of course.

  117. gobert always played inside.. so did pau…

if zinger is gonna succeed… he’s going to need to change his game… play more inside… if he’s shooting a shitload of 3s his first year… it’s onto 2017….

  118. Not a good night. A lot of people seem excited about Zinger so I hope I’m wrong. Winslow going at 10 to Riley is brutal.

  119. @ hoola I’m actually hoping for kind of a Durant Anthony Davis hybrid on offense

Sure, and I’m the b-ball God Phil keeps referring to.

  120. Now that we have him, I have to say I don’t feel at all like trading him. I want to see him in summer league and see how he develops after that.

  121. ‘Melo to the Clips in a sign n’ trade for Jordan anyone?

No one’s trading anything for Melo after he played like crap and then had knee surgery last season.

  122. Kind of puzzled that the Celtics didn’t pull off a trade to move up. Reportedly they want to move their #28, but haven’t been able to move up from their #16, at least yet.

  123. Does Porzingis have a buyout? Anyone know if he’ll actually even be here this season?

  124. Really hate that the Pacers got Turner.

But I’m OK with our pick. I still would have preferred WCS, foot issues and all, but I do agree that KP has a higher ceiling.

He also could be a total bust.

Summer league is going to be fascinating this year….

  125. Why do people keep talking about weight, do people remember what dirk, kg, pau and noah looked like when they came into the league. The league has a way to “magically” put weight on people hahahah

I’m more inclined to remember what jan vesely, nikoloz tskitishvili and milicic did when they came into the league. Two things: jack. sh1t.

  126. The only bad thing about the pick is we know nothing about him and we want to be sure we got immediate help. Well, we have to trust phil and our scouts and be comfortable with uncertainty. You can’t make a credible argument against the player bc we know next to nothing about him. Personally, I’m very excited to see what he has. He probably won’t suck. He’s huge, a good shooter, extremely self assured. NBA players are raving about him (see kyle Lowry) and kevin pelton’s stat translation system makes his numbers as good as okafor.

Nothing to hate about the pick. Plenty to fear, but nothing to hate.

  127. This draft coverage is beyond boring. Really miss having JVG and Simmons on the set.

  128. Melo will be here for the rest of his career. You are wasting your thoughts if u think otherwise

  129. Also, I’m surrounded by idiots here. Seriously, that reaction was embarrassing from knicks fans. If they showed the one guy in the crowd standing and applauding on TV, that was me.

  130. Kevin Udwary
    June 25, 2015 at 8:04 pm
I kind of hope we keep him. It would raise the odds of Melo demanding a trade by the all star break and making us rebuild for real.

^ Another thing I like about the pick

  131. Zingis has great upside, but he’s going to take a real beating in the NBA, and he looks awfully fragile.

  132. Trade downs don’t really happen until the picks are actually made, so there’s a lot of action waiting to happen here I suspect.

  133. I don’t hate the pick. I hate that the Lakers tricked me into thinking Okafor might drop.

  134. 6 GM’s passed on Winslow after the Okafor pick. I don’t think they’re all idiots, I do think Winslow may be a bit overrated.

  135. Yesterday I said:

I assume Towns, Okafor and Russell are gone. I would want them in that order if available. Otherwise…

I want WCS. Will be OK with Mudiay, Winslow or Porzingas.

I predict they draft Stephan Marbury.

So I’ll stand by my words. I’m OK with the pick. Just OK. Phil has a lot of work to do in free agency.

  136. Agreed that it’s tough to judge Zinger right now. I really hope we can get Jordan in FA now. What type of contract is Danny Green projected to get? I’m assuming him + Jordan isn’t possible, but if so that’d be interesting.

  137. Justin Anderson of Virginia is my pipe dream “Knicks buy a late first-rounder” pick.

  138. Apparently Hahn is saying Knicks are paying 12 million to David West. It just gets worse and worse.

  139. I still think PJ will play for Monroe. The Knicks desperately need a low post presence to help with Anthony, Calderon and, yes, Porzingis on the perimeter. Monroe can score, pass, rebound and is still young. He is a plodder and not much of a defender, though.

Another cheap alternative, however, might be Koufos if PJ just looks for decent defender type center.

Either way, Danny Green would be sweet, too.

  140. So I’ll stand by my words. I’m OK with the pick. Just OK. Phil has a lot of work to do in free agency.

Yep. And the West move is just mind-boggingly stupid if is true.

  141. Regarding zinger, all you fuck what Melo thinks or thinks guys should like that pick. He’s a project with upside who is 7-3 with shoes

  142. If NYK gives $12M to washed-up, 35-year old David West, it’s safe to tune the fuck out. There is absolutely no spinning that one. Phil will have been revealed to be a moron.

  143. Who is saying the West stuff, West’s camp? I can’t imagine Phil would take the Zinger and then pay 34 y/0 West $12 million a year.

  144. Just watched the grantland video on porzingis. He’s a lot more coordinated and smooth then I thought he would be. He’s very skinny, no doubt about it. But he seems to move fluidly and like a real athlete. J is silky smooth. Boy needs to eat and get in the gym. No doubt there is a lot of potential there. It also seems like he relishes the fact that he is a unknown quantity.

  145. To be fair I didn’t see Hahn say it directly. It sounds fucking crazy so maybe it’s bad information.

  146. But I did just learn that David West is the Pelicans’ all-time leading scorer.

  147. Woj: “The Knicks are trading Tim Hardaway to the Hawks, who will draft Jerian Grant for the Knicks, league sources tell Yahoo Sports.”

I know nothing of Jerian Grant, but this is the best move of the Phil era!

  148. I actually like West. Even at $12 million. He’s better than David Lee, even at age 35.

  149. The Knicks are trading Tim Hardaway to the Hawks, who will draft Jerian Grant for the Knicks, league sources tell Yahoo Sports.

    – good trade?

  150. Watch Grant’s dunk highlight real. Could be a lot of fun in the Garden. Nice move PJ.

  151. That trade is bullshit. Too good to be true. Mostly because he’s not one of the 10 worst players in the league

  152. Jared Zwerling ?tweeted:

League source: David West is “very likely” to sign with the Knicks come FA. “He knew that before he chose not to opt in” with the Pacers.

    There is a price.
Another report: THJ to Hawks for their pick

  153. Jackson’s best move yet! Wow, two big upside/high risk pick in Zinger and Grant. This is not the Knicks we’re used to!

  154. Phil was able to flip THJ into Jerian Grant??? Damn good draft Phil. Damn good draft.

  155. Grant is old for a rookie (turns 23 by the time season starts) but I like him, especially for TH2. Summer League just got even more exciting at least.

  156. I remember when we signed Grant’s father Harvey to an offer sheet, hoping Bullets would have to pay Tom Gugliotta too much money to match it. Instead, they matched, and Knicks traded for Charles Smith instead. (I *think* that was the same offseason, anyway.)

  157. Jerian Grant, PG Notre Dame:
    2014-15
    TS%: .592
    USG: 24.2
    3pt%: .316
    AST%: 33.6
    TOV%: 13.4

Scores efficiently, but sucks from 3. Good passer, pretty low turnovers. Stats look reasonable. Looks like he was a 5th year senior?

  158. Jerian Grant should be a better NBA player than THJ.

Grant is a good perimeter defender, and has ideal size for a triangle PG at 6’5″. He’s a four-year senior and is already 23, so he doesn’t have a super high ceiling, but there’s a lot to like about his game. He takes care of the ball, makes his free throws and is a good finisher at the rim.

    EXCELLENT trade. Bravo.

  159. I’m impressed. Now hopefully Phil doesn’t screw up free agency. I’m ok with Monroe, but we need a C and a SF.

  160. Is this right? The Knicks traded THJ for the 19th pick in the draft?? Straight up?

  161. Jerian grant was in my top 10 of this draft. He can get to rim & shoot. Remind me of a poor man’s D-wade. Concerns are his age (23) and he may be a tweener. With that being said, I love this trade & pick.

  162. Grant is not a bad 3pt shooter. He shot only 31% this past year but his previous 3 seasons he shot 35, 34 and 40% from 3pt range and every season he took almost 4 per game (for his college career he shot 34.5% which isnt great but certainly not awful). He is a career 79% FT shooter too.

  163. If Grant is one of the worst players in the league then its a lateral move. Otherwise it’s a win

  164. As a Knick fan who no longer lives in NY, is TH2 a popular player there? Or is the casual fan hip to his chucking and sucking ways?

  165. I keep waiting for the correction, TH jr for the 49th pick not the 19th.

I guess the Hawks were way impressed with his “clutch” shooting against them

  166. Maybe TH2’s clutch shooting in the late-season win vs the Hawks wasnt a bad thing after all if it convinced them to trade for him lol.

  167. We picked THJr with the 24th pick and traded him for the 19th. The two seasons he just played really RAISED his value? That’s just fucking crazy.

  168. There goes the Justin Anderson pipe dream. That guy can play, and will be a good player for Dallas.

  169. Easily the best trade of the Phil era. Grant wouldn’t have been my first choice there but definitely a solid move.

  170. I would listen to Jax read a Cormax McCarthy novel. I would not listen to him talk about basketball teams.

  171. Love love love Grant. Should step in right and away and play at the 1 and 2. Calderon, Grant, Galloway is all of the sudden a little rotation. Already better than THJ on D (hard to be worse). Fuck yeah!

  172. Easily the best trade of the Phil era. Grant wouldn’t have been my first choice there but definitely a solid move.

Yeah, even if Grant turns out to not be much, that Phil was able to get a FIRST ROUND PICK for Tim freaking Hardway?!?! We’ll have to wait a while to see what Zinger becomes, but this trade was easily the most competent thing Phil has done as a GM.

  173. Suddenly I feel like there are no rules. Maybe we’ll sign and trade bargs for a third first rounder.

  174. Now, do you think Phil still tries to buy a second rounder (whether to stash another Euro or for an end of the bench guy who’d be an upgrade over Travis Wear), or is this it for the night?

  175. 424 meant to say “nice little rotation.”

Also, when was the last time the Knicks flat out won a trade? I literally can’t remember…

  176. And honestly Grant can do a lot of what Mudiay was gonna year 1. Doesn’t have that same upside, but this is for THJ so… I’m incredibly stoked.

  177. Wow, what a great surprise to wake up to after a nap. THjr actually had 1st rd value, does that mean I should thank him for his late game heroics now. Lol

  178. Now, do you think Phil still tries to buy a second rounder (whether to stash another Euro or for an end of the bench guy who’d be an upgrade over Travis Wear), or is this it for the night?

Pretty sure we have the full $3mil to spend…

  179. What was Atlanta thinking? What a ridiculous move for them. They moved from Kelly Oubre to Tim Hardaway Jr. plus two future second-rounders from Washington? Thar’s kind of a shitty deal.

  180. Supposedly LA and Boston want to dump their late firsts (27 and 28), maybe for cash. You don’t suppose? I’d think that PJ would be more likely to buy a 2nd rounder, now.

  181. Atlanta got two future seconds as well from Washington but that’s still a bad bad trade

  182. Adding a first round pick now would hurt their cap space for free agency, so I suspect they’d be more interested in a second round pick. Then again, if they seriously plan on spending real cap room on David fucking West, then maybe they should be reducing their cap space.

  183. Maybe Atlanta was taking Oubre for Washington from the get go? But, yeah, they really must like THJ as a shooter.

Grant should at least be a better all-around G, if not a 3 point threat. Grant does seem like a classic triangle big guard.

  184. I liked Grant so much that I was okay with the Knicks taking him even if they got Russell. He is a nice prospect. The only concern is age.

  185. I may have had one single malt too many, just told my wife that soon she’d be chanting Cunnilingis for Porzingis.

  186. And I actually like David West, but as the final piece for a contender. And if he’s opting out of a $12 million deal, how much do you think he’s looking for?

  187. Idk I prefer Delon Wright.

Also think it would’ve been good to gamble on Hunter or Upshaw.

    Whatever.

  188. I may have had one single malt too many, just told my wife that soon she’d be chanting Cunnilingis for Porzingis.

Better than the Stinger for the Zinger!

  189. Knicks make draft day trade with Atlanta hawks that lands New York a point guard prospect.

This was pretty close to my “what if” article.

  190. I think Jordan Mickey will be a good player LSU teammate of Martin. Mickey or the Bowling green kid are two players the knicks may want to get in on.

  191. And I actually like David West, but as the final piece for a contender. And if he’s opting out of a $12 million deal, how much do you think he’s looking for?

This is my thinking as well but a 4yr 30m contract could work too. I doubt he would get 17.5m after next year. A long contract could give him security and with the cap going up it is a risk you can take.

  192. I cannot believe they got Jerian Grant for THJ. I’m stunned.

What an amazing move (and what a dumb move on Atlanta’s part).

  193. Any contract that Phil want to give West should be VERY short regardless of the value.

At the end of a 4 year contract, West will be like 60yo?

  194. One great thing about the Zinger pick is that this has to be the end of the road for Bargs, right? You wouldn’t want Zinger to be within 50 feet of Bargs, I would imagine.

  195. One great thing about the Zinger pick is that this has to be the end of the road for Bargs, right? You wouldn’t want Zinger to be within 50 feet of Bargs, I would imagine.

    And Jason Smith, hopefully.

  196. If Smith would take the vet minimum, I think he still returns. Jax singled him out for compliments the other day.

  197. If somehow Phil buy a 2nd round pick that ends up with Montrezl Harrell I’m ready for start doing some crazy shit.

    Love the guy

  198. looney off to the warriors… lot of these names going off the board in the next dozen picks….

  199. Yeah, even if Grant turns out to not be much, that Phil was able to get a FIRST ROUND PICK for Tim freaking Hardway?!?! We’ll have to wait a while to see what Zinger becomes, but this trade was easily the most competent thing Phil has done as a GM.

I wouldn’t exactly characterize relying on the stupidity of others as competence…

  200. uh im pretty sure one of the hallmarks of good GMing is taking advantage of market inefficiencies engendered by human stupidity (Masai Ujiri anyone?).

Phil deserves credit and to deny him it is simply uncharitable.

  201. Yeah, if another GM makes a dumb trade with you, how is that not a good thing for your end? You took advantage of someone else’s stupidity. That’s what GMs are supposed to do.

  202. I wouldn’t exactly characterize relying on the stupidity of others as competence…

C’mon now. Can’t we just accept Phil did good on this one? ha ha

  203. The trade does not make up for the botching of the lottery pick (both the slot and the selection) because it had no bearing whatsoever on the subsequent trade.

They are not related. Phil Jackson cooked a shitty, burnt, poisonous meal and then a Michelin-star meal. You had to eat both. Are you happy about the first one just because the second one tasted good?

  204. Looks like another draft-and-stash for our second round purchase:

@PeterBotte The Knicks are trading with Philly for rights to No. 35 pick Guillermo Hernangomez, 6-11 from Spain, stashing him in Europe.

Anyone know anything about this guy?

  205. I blame Fish more than Phil for our non tank at the end of the season but you’re not wrong that he’s culpable for those things. I think it’s hasty to say the selection was botched though.

All I’m saying atm is that Phil deserves credit for the Grant trade, no matter the results of the other parts of the draft–it was excellent. And I think that’s pretty much incontestable and I just want credit to be properly attributed.

  206. @PeterBotte The Knicks are trading with Philly for rights to No. 35 pick Guillermo Hernangomez, 6-11 from Spain, stashing him in Europe.

He’s big. He’s a post player. meh rebounder, below average defender.

    Played with Porzingis.

  207. Would love to try and buy a pick for Dakari but that’s a process that I really don’t know much about.

  208. According to a report from @chadfordinsider, the rights to Guillermo Hernangomez are being traded to New York. Stay tuned for details…

So who is this and we traded for whom? Sixers need a pg hope they will get calderon :p

  209. Here’s something positive about Hernangomez:

@draftexpress: 7 guys in ACB history posted a PER of 20 at age 20 or prior: Stanley Roberts, Splitter, R. Fernandez, Rubio, Mirotic, Scola, W. Hernangomez.

If we end up with a Luis Scola for a 2nd round pick that would be an amazing get.

Anyone know what we gave up?

  210. We’re getting Hernangomez? That’s awesome.

6’11 center, older style of game–very physical. Played with Porzingis at Sevilla. Averages about 10.5 rebound per 40 pace adjusted, about a 70% ft shooter. He’s not very athletic but he has solid measurements and a good head on his shoulders. His game is mostly around the rim where it’s pretty solid but he shows he may be able to eventually do pick and pop type stuff. He’s a solid offensive rebounder, mediocre d rebounder, but has fairly high turnovers (3.4 per 40 or something). These tend to not happen in the post and are more due to bad decision making on the perimeter so they seem fixable. His passing isn’t strong but it’s not particularly weak either. His biggest weakness is his defense–he’s not a great rim protector but he has decent footwork. His defensive upside is replacement level at best. I like him.

Maybe it’s just me, but I prefer it when GMs don’t tank an entire season just to purchase a gamble on an unproven European player.

Based on the reports of how inexplicably horny the Hawks were for Hardaway Jr., this probably could have been done before the draft and been accomplished by an inanimate fire hydrant.

  212. There’s a newer thread ppl. I can’t scroll this far on my phone anymore to find out what we gave to Philly for this dude. I’m just going to pretend it was Melo

  213. Dang, Grant looks fantastic in an empty gym. I hope that translates!

Isn’t he Horace’s son? I could see why Phil would pull that one.

  214. Many GMs would have wanted to keep Hardaway and many previous Knick GMs too. The fact that Phil didn’t want to keep him and traded him for a more well rounded player is what is impressive. I’m very happy with the trade.
