My notes for whatever they’re worth. Missed the first 5min of the 3rd.

    * Dadiet really needs to rebound. Both teams gave up 45% oreb% so I don’t know what’s going on there. He scored almost everything off movement, cuts, or transition, so it’s not surprising assists were low. He’s moving really well.

    * Diawara looks big. Eyeballing it, he’s roughly the same height and width as Nnaji, which is insane for a guy who supposedly can defend the perimeter.

    * Nnaji zero rebounds. Not great. Moves well. Looks strong.

    * SL Knicks are trying to play fast. I’m thinking that just might not be Kolek’s game or he’s pressing.

    * I thought McCullar did a very good job staying in front of people defensively. Not sure what he’s going to do on offense.

    * Hukporti was pretty good. I thought he gave up some passes to the roller that he shouldn’t have, which could be a problem in the NBA, but maybe that’s unfair to him with how awful everyone else was playing.

    * I guess Dink Pate had 6rebs and 3asts in 14min?! I don’t remember it. Maybe because the announcers spent more time talking about Rikers Island for an unexplained reason than they did about the game. He needs to shoot better.

    1

Watched most of the first half. Ron Holland really stood out, seems like he put on some muscle. Never saw Bobby Klintman play before, he looked pretty good.

Kolek executed terribly but showed some of the physicality I was looking for. Not concerned about the passing or shooting, just his individual and team D. Saw some baby steps there but he wasnt really getting targeted.

I couldn’t tell whether Dadiet was getting frozen out or just not working hard enough to get open. McCullar and Pate were forcing terrible shots, so maybe some of both. I don’t see much hope for McCullar, his shot looks terrible and never went in much in 5 years in college.

Hukporti did a few good things out there…tough rebounds, a follow jam, couple of blocks…got up and down the court well, seemed fully recovered from the torn meniscus. I hoped to see more chemistry with Kolek but there was zero.

I thought Diawara looked better than Nnaji in terms of being able to play in the NBA sooner than later. His footwork is not good, but he made some decent passes and showed some fluidity at times. Nnaji had a couple of moments, but mostly looked like the typical raw project C that never quite makes it.

Once this Vegas run is over, I hope to never see any of the rest of the team outside of the Westchester County Center. Not even Luka Scuka.

Seems pretty clear that our last two roster spots should go to a PG and a big wing. It doesn’t seem like there’s a candidate at the PG spot is available on the Summer League set, so that’s probably the best use of the vet’s min spot. Obviously CP3 would be perfect, but it doesn’t look like that’s gonna happen. Brogdan and Fultz will probably get more somewhere else. I’m not really interested in running back the Cam Payne Experience but beggars can’t be choosers. Is Jared Butler an option? His stats don’t look terrible.

As to the big wing, the only guy on the vet’s list I find intriguing is Boucher.

    From James Edwards III:

“…second-round pick Mohamed Diawara had a few nice flashes. He’s a physically imposing wing with long arms and broad shoulders whose game matches his frame. He had seven rebounds in 17 minutes and was the only player who played at least 15 minutes who didn’t have a negative plus-minus. Diawara is playing for an opportunity on the roster in some capacity, or potentially getting sent back to play overseas. He’s a raw prospect as it pertains to skills and feel for the game, but the physical tools are intriguing and worth monitoring.”

If find it interesting that nobody’s called out Beauchamp — I thought he had a decent game, with solid (and successful) moves to the basket and a few jump shots that went in.

His final box score bites, so maybe there’s a reason nobody else noticed or cared, and I don’t think he’s roster material, but it felt like he was playing more to NBA form than most of the others.

Looking forward (sic) to game 2.

I have to admit it took me all game to get used to how bad everyone was. In truth I never got used to it. You’d think that being on the cusp of real paydays playing a game you’ve spent your life on and being on the cliff where garbage collector is the alternative would drive some of these guys to excellence, given that they all have NBA bodies. Definitely a few of the Pistons were like that (e.g., Holland).

I get that a few of them are new to the game, but still. Phew.

I should have mentioned Beauchamp. I would like him more if he wasn’t 24+ with 3 years in the league and actually had a chance to make the roster. Just another guy who distracts from the guys we really want to look at…took 15 shots.

I wasn’t watching Beauchamp as closely, so between the offense being a mess and the announcers unaware that a game was being played in front of them, I couldn’t really say much.

I do think making shots is supposed to be an issue for him, so you’d like to see him come out and do that.

I think we should cut these kids some slack. What system are they even running post-Thibs?! That coupled with first-game jitters explains a lot, at least for one night.
Diawara’s athleticism is maybe most intriguing storyline rn, plus he’s tight with our best prospect (Dadiet), so I wonder if he has enough juice to grab a roster spot? Most likely he’ll be a 2-way or go back to Europe, but you never know…

Meanwhile all the guys we could have drafted last year continue to impress…

    Kyshawn George: 24-7-3
    Isaiah Collier: 16-6-9
    Kyle Filipowski: 32-6-5
    Jaylen Wells: 13-3-3

The ‘24 draft should have been a boon to our roster depth.

How many of these guys are actually going to be better and how many of them are “Why didn’t we draft Bones Hyland?”

A great day of smacking balls and balling baskets. I think it’s pretty obvious that the baggy trend is correcting. Get your daisy dukes ready, boys.

I’m sort of with hubert on the 2024 draft, I liked Filipowski and Dunn, Collier less so but more than Kolek. Alas…

Love Huk, though. And would like to see Dadiet get a very long look with 4 rotation players on the floor with him. Maybe he can defend well enough to let his offense develop. Kolek worries me but he’s putting the work and may still come around (he was a hubert fave prior to draft iirc.)

Meanwhile all the guys we could have drafted last year continue to impress…

And quite a few who didn’t even get to make it to summer league.

Collier (who is very young) was arguably the worst player in the NBA who played real minutes last year. He’s got a ways to go.

Yeah, I was a big Kolek guy. I was a much bigger Collier & Filipowski guy, though. Collier still has a huge range of possibilities ranging from NBA starter to quickly out of the league, but he does seem like a much better bet than Kolek. Filipowski felt like a no brainer to me. Seems like a surefire bench player in the Obi Toppin mold.

I did not like Kyshawn George and let out a sigh of relief when I realized we drafted him for the Wizards. But now he looks like a good bet to be Kelly Oubre, which would have been a great get at 24. And I had no idea Jaylen Wells was a basketball player.

But I’m not a draft guy like Noble or djphan. Literally all I do is like the highest ranked player on the ESPN draft board when our selection is up. I didn’t study Jalen Johnson or Keon Johnson. I just knew they were ranked 10th and 15th and we were drafting 19th and 21st.

I am that basic, and my picks have killing Leon’s for 5 years.

Gonna backtrack a bit on Beauchamp. He played last night like he’d actually played basketball before, outside of the Y, which is no surprise as someone pointed out he’s 24. He did a few things that suggested Bball IQ, like noting the defense wasn’t set and driving to the rim (and actually making the layup). That’s nice, but doesn’t actually mean he has any real skills. TBD.

Keon Johnson got waived 2 years ago, so I don’t know if that’s the best example, but I’ll take your word that your method outperforms Leon.

I liked a lot of those guys before the draft, but I’m not sold on them after 1 season:

    * As Dred said, Collier was actually pretty terrible. He should get better though.

    * Flip still can’t defend and his 65% from the ft line makes me question whether his 3pt shooting is sustainable.

    * Kyshawn might be good, but hasn’t been yet. I don’t think he gets to the basket anywhere near as often as Oubre does.

    * I don’t know much about Wells. He was below-average efficiency and lower usage. Still a nice player if he can maintain that production.

As a group, I’m not sure they’ve been that great, other than Flip’s scoring, and we don’t know the longterm outcome even with a year of hindsight.

Keon Johnson got waived 2 years ago, so I don’t know if that’s the best example, but I’ll take your word that your method outperforms Leon

Taking the best player available is not my method.

And secondly I think it’s a great example. If we had taken the BPA two times, we’d have ended up with one two-way stud and one bust. That’s a great outcome. The goal is not to bat 1.000.

BPA is, of course, subjective. But there’s no doubt we’re not using it. We didn’t take Dadiet, for instance, because he was the #1 ranked player on our board (and if we did, everyone who made the board should be fired).

There really isn’t much to stew about re: the 2024 draft. Doen’t seem like anyone picked at #24 or after is lighting the world on fire. I suppose we could have drafted Wells or Post or someone like that, but most of the players didn’t really show much as “depth pieces” beyond Ryan Dunn, who can’t shoot.

I suppose it could be argued that Dadiet was clearly never going to help last year. Same with Kolek, and he’s older so even worse. But finding Huk, a reasonable bet to be an excellent 3rd string C, and possibly more, is all one can ask for the last pick in the draft. McCullar was mocked much, much higher on a number of prominent boards, and I think he can be an NBA-level small defensive wing if you don’t need him to score beyond point blank range.

So I’m more in a “the jury is still out” mode until we see what any of these guys can do beyond summer league under Mike Brown. I also wouldn’t be surprised at all if Diawara gets a “check back in 3 months” flyer to see if he can make fast strides in time to earn that rookie roster spot.

Quentin Grimes and two 2nds seems not much worse than Jalen Johnson and nothing in the scheme of things. Charlotte picked Kai Jones.

I think we all agree that the FO undervalues draft picks, either in actually picking a player or its trade value. But to constantly (over multiple off seasons) harp on how we “could’ve” drafted a better player in (this case 1 summer league game) in hindsight is strange.
