Greetings from the 16U volleyball MLK Kickoff Challenge in beautiful York, PA.
Great, have fun! And good luck to your kid! š
Let’s enjoy this thread until E comes around…
Not much to say about yesterday, they had some luck with some crazy shots, the refs were bad again, but we didn’t do as much as we should to try and win the game. We must look to ourselves, because right now there’s a lot to improve… but i’d start with defense, we must be better at defense, sometimes we look like a GLeague team defending the pros. And that’s unacceptable.
Yeah, one of my favorite directors of all time. A great loss! š¢
How are you and the family holding on, Donnie?
And now i’m off to the mountains… have a great day, good people of KB!
If you like horses… and a lot of horses…. travel 20 miles down St Rd 194 towards Maryland to Hanover Shoe Farm, where they must have 1,500 horses on the property.
I’m pretty much with Cyber, it was actually an entertaining game, and most of the Knicks played decently. Except for Payne who was unconscious. OG actually had a double-double, for those who think he’s a shitty rebounder (I’m in that camp, but there you go). A few questionable plays by Brunson late, but I don’t think they lost us the game.
We just got ‘dunked on’ by three-pointers. Not smart enough to say for certain we’re doing something wrong, but there does seem to be a tendency for opponents to do well there on a basis too regular to suggest we can’t improve something. I’ll also point out that the Knicks shot 41% from three, so it’s not like the Wolves were doing something significant on D that we were not. Except they made even more threes than we did.
I’m smiling at the ‘Mitch is our Lord and Savior’ position, but in fact there’s an iota of possible truth to that, as a real rim protector could provide the defensive spacing to allow folks to stay out on shooters rather than (over)helping and leaving someone open.
I do think not having our 25-14 guy makes winning harder. So I feel this was more of a ‘can’t win all 82’ than a referendum on the season. I’m sure we’ll see posts to the contrary later today, however…
The Knicks are 26th in the league in 3pt% allowed, so I donāt think āthe opponent just hit some crazy shotsā is really operable. Sure, they DID hit some crazy shots. We are also a bottom 5 team in defending three pointers over a large and growing sample size, and thatās factorial. We donāt defend that shot well, and it doesnāt appear that weāre going to be defending that shot well in the future either.
I donāt want to be Debbie Downer here, but Iām bearish about this teamās prospects over the second half of the season. The schedule gets a lot tougher, our guys already seem to be fatigued at the end of games and have played massive minutes loads, and our injury luck is due to run out. Iām not loving our chances to hang onto that #3 seed.

Mostly kidding, JK. It’s a very reasonable take, although I’m less likely than you to project out to inevitable disaster.
It’s so interesting and bizarre to have such a good team for once and to struggle to stay positive about any of it. Not sure if that’s just being a fan (Knicks have rarely been good during my tenure, certainly since I’ve been at this site, so I wouldn’t really know what it’s like to talk about a good team) or if there is a real quality to this team that is different than every other team out there.
I mean sure, it’d be more fun to root for and chat about the current Thunder. But most other teams have glaring weaknesses of one sort or another, and I bet we’d be poking our fingers in the open wound…
I also find it bizarre that JK knows something that the entire Knicks organization seems oblivious to. It’s not like we’re a team of Trae Youngs. There are good defenders out there. I’m sure it’s hard to institute new systems mid-romp, but holy good god damn, that’s what a coaching staff gets paid quite decent money to do.
“Greetings from the 16U volleyball MLK Kickoff Challenge in beautiful York, PA.”
ess-dog, that brings back memories of my daughter’s first travel tournament, which happened to be in York for her 15U team! Little did I know at that time that she would go on to play in college. Now that it’s all in the rear view mirror, I can’t tell you how much I miss it. Enjoy every minute!
PS if you can get over to the tournament in Lancaster PA’s Spooky Nook facility, check it out. It’s the biggest indoor sports venue in the US, really cool to see. Maybe your kid will play there next year!
Sorry Raven, I’m not Pags but it looks like we have different standard about “decent” games.
Just for instance a 6-17 shooting night from our 3rd option, just when circumstances forced him to be the 2nd, is not what I qualify as “decent” š
I’m happy our next game is monday, I’m starting to feel detached from this team and a couple of days recovering the sleep I lost this week to watch them lose at home against the Pistons and Wolves should make miracles to my mood… š
Our defensive scheme is tailored to be burned to ashes in NBA 2025, the sooner we’ll make peace with it the quicker we can try something different (do we think there’s a small chance Thibs has ever heard something about a thing called “zone”?).
Anyway regular season doesn’t matter, if not for adding further evidence to the theory that Thibs destroys his regulars, so who cares?
š
I’ll be running errands shortly, so I’ll shut up soon. One last (ha) note. Macri just put out his newsletter, he goes through every single made three last night by the Wolves to see what happened. Here’s his summary (link below for those with access):
So, what conclusions can we draw?
1. For the most part, the defense was solid. I had seven of 22 makes that really bugged me, you may have closer to 10 or 12, but either way, weāve seen far worse defense from New York this season.
2. Of the seven plays that annoyed me, three had Brunson at fault, two had Hart and two had one of the centers (Precious on both, most likely). If Brunson isnāt going to be asked to switch for fear of overextension or fouling, he needs to be a bit more on point with this stuff. Hart giving shooters too much room has been a season-long trend.
3. Should the Knicks help less, or trust that rotations will improve? I think a little bit of both is probably the right answer.
4. I only counted one play where drop coverage over another coverage was to blame.
5. Didnāt think the effort was an issue.

For what’s worth me neither.
Were the 19th ranked defense and are dead last, 30th ranked, in strength of schedule. Our remaining schedule is very difficult. The math just doesnāt look good.
Z-man, I figured youād weigh in. Itās no Knicks basketball, but these girls go hard. Unfortunately, our team has a shortage of big men (er, girls), but we make up for it with moxie and hustlebunnyocity.
Would love to see some horses, BPL, but I have to stay focused.
Jeremiah Robinson-Earl went to Villanova.
Charles Bassey had 12 and 9 (5-of-6 shooting) in 17 minutes off the bench for the Spurs last night.
ess, at that time, my kid’s team was a scrub on second-level team from a pretty prominent club called Downstate. She was only on the team because two girls who thought they should have made the higher level team were cut. Because she was raw and undersized for her position (OH) (and a bit mouthy, go figure!) her coach played her sparingly. He was a nice enough guy, and would often talk about how his three daughters all played for the same SUNY school. Yet her anger at him for underestimating her was so great that she worked her ass off during the offseason (mainly via CrossFit) and advanced to the higher level team the next year. From that time forward, we spent our MLK tournaments in Lancaster.
The point is, if the love of the sport and the competition is there, moxie and hustlebunnyocity can go a long way!
have fun ess-dog š
what happened the first half of the season, is now in the past….
we look very much like a .500 team right now…
win a game, lose a game…seems very likely that we may stay at that point for the rest of the season…
would be nice if we used the opportunity to work on our bench, try to build up a second unit…
ha, i got one of those myself…wouldn’t have it any other way…it’s a tough world out there, gotta stand up for yourself…
right now daughter is going to school and doing after school teaching…educators rock!!!
ess-dog nailed it at the end of the game thread. Not sure much more needs to be said. Past opponent 3p% isn’t supposed to be terribly predictive of future 3p%, so hopefully it gets better. Till then, we won’t be having much fun.
I said it last night, the drop off from KAT being out is enormous. I’d rather have Brunson out than KAT because more minutes for Payne and Deuce is much more preferable to more minutes for Sims and Precious.
2 seasons ago the Knicks defense was also 19th despite healthy seasons from both Mitch and iHart so rim protection wasn’t the problem. To me it’s definitely become a scheme issue for the most part especially because the 3pt rate throughout the NBA continues to climb.
I agree that at least part of it is a scheme issue. Seems like we prioritize 2pt% prevention over 3pt% prevention, which is a bad idea.
Also, all five of our starters are on pace for a career high in minutes played, with all of them on pace for around 3000 minutes. Weāve squeezed a 51 win pace out of this against the weakest schedule in the NBA. This just all seems like itās a house of cards.
100% agree. Backup C is an issue and may remain one even after Mitch is back.
Maybe it was just last night because Bridges and Hart had off nights, but just watching the game it looked like we didnāt have enough firepower on the court even with Brunson, Bridges and OG on the court. Mitch is not going to fix that.
Sims and Precious at the same time makes less sense.
Payne is a love him or hate guy for me, but last night he was on fire and should have gotten way more minutes.
Iām losing faith in Thibs from multiple directions.
We missed a lot of good looks last night. I don’t think Naz’s looks were any better than the looks we missed. Or Ant’s.
Sometimes it truly is just a make-or-miss league.
Thatās the first time I saw Ant live. Heās ridiculously gifted. He has a chance to be really special.
2 seasons ago the Knicks defense was also 19th despite healthy seasons from both Mitch and iHart so rim protection wasnāt the problem. To me itās definitely become a scheme issue for the most part especially because the 3pt rate throughout the NBA continues to climb.
i differ here quite a bit. not saying there aren’t pareto improvements that might be available with more scheme flexibility, but i think personnel is a bigger anchor here. and i don’t think it’s useful to conclude that rim protection isn’t a big deal because we were also 19th in 22-23. every unhappy defense is unhappy in its own way.
a very important factor in 22-23 was that we combined three extremely flawed defenders for a ton of minutes. randle, rj and jalen played 1432 minutes together and allowed 123.8 per 100. in the other 2560 minutes our defense was solid and allowed 110.7 (in an obviously small sample the 3 of them together were also 11+ per 100 worse against cleveland and miami in the playoffs). rim protection is easily the single most important component to a good defense, even today. but if you stick three terrible help defenders who are also mediocre or worse man defenders on the court together, it has a ton to overcome. that isn’t our situation today.
today we have terrible rim defense most of the time. this is true with kat and it’s not *that* much better with jericho or precious (despite jericho’s early eye popping rim dfg% numbers, which have since ebbed but are also far less impressive in context). this is a fundamental problem that will be tough scheme around. kat has never been the starting center for a good defense, and he’s had solid wings around him more than once. putting kat at the 4 with mitch for some of his minutes might be our best hope for gaining more on defense than we lose on offense, at least against the right opposing lineups. at least some of our 3p% against is surely bad luck, just like some of the ism year 3% against was surely luck.
i appreciate that it’s tantalizing to try some zone, and i’m all for it. but we don’t really have the backbone of great zone defenders, so i’m also skeptical of how much a difference it would make.
Strat I think it says more about how good and unique KAT is. There is no backup C except ironically Naz Reid who can come close to replicating KAT on offense. It’s alot easier to find replacement level backup guards who can at least provide some shooting like Payne does, finding not just backup Centers but even starting caliber Centers who do what KAT does is almost impossible. KAT really is that good.
When Ant is making off-the-dribble 3’s, he’s virtually unguardable. When he’s not, he can be slowed down. He is shooting 46% from 2 this year.
He and Naz went a combined 13-19, many of which were either long-range or contested pull-ups.
Tip your cap.
BigBlueAL,
I agree with you. Maybe one of the downsides of having a C thatās a critical part of your offense is that you are going to have a significant drop off when heās hurt, but Sims has no offense at all.
Does Horford have a younger brother?
I dunno pt, the Knicks philosophy always has the defender covering the corners to help and hedge on penetration. I mean there are plenty of possessions where the corner defender is virtually standing next to the paint ready to help leading to an easy pass to the corner that begins the scramble mode. The Knicks defense is predicated on helping and rotating like crazy, it’s just getting harder and harder to continue to do so.
Having said that it does seem like in the playoffs Thibs makes way more game to game defensive adjustments than he does in the regular season so I do have some hope that come playoff time the defense will improve a bit.
“kat has never been the starting center for a good defense, and heās had solid wings around him more than once.”
I don’t know how many times this has to be said before it sinks in.
“putting kat at the 4 with mitch for some of his minutes might be our best hope for gaining more on defense than we lose on offense, at least against the right opposing lineups”
There is zero chance that Minny makes it to the conference finals last year with KAT playing primarily at the 5. This is a truth that has to be reckoned with and addressed…if not by Mitch than by someone else not on the roster (or in the rotation if you want to wishcast on Huk). Otherwise, getting eliminated prematurely in the playoffs is a real possibility.
“at least some of our 3p% against is surely bad luck, just like some of the ism year 3% against was surely luck.”
“some” is a loaded (i.e. useless) term. Is it 90%? 50%? 10%? If you can’t quantify it, it dulls the senses.
hi milo…I hope all is well for you today, and you’re getting the chance to relax and do the things you enjoy…
and the good news is?
mitch can’t get back soon enough…
seems like not upgrading from sims or even precious this off season has been/is one of the bigger front office issues this season…
cap/asset numerology aside, seems like we really missed the boat by not having any kind of rim protection this season…
bad/limited rim protection aside – why are we getting killed from 3?
geo, I think there’s a snowball effect from having two sub-par defenders on the court, particularly at the rim and the point of attack. Seems like the wings, especially Hart, are cheating over and the ball eventually outruns the defense to a situation where the close-out is non-existant or late. Nowhere was that more apparent than the last possessions of the Pistons game. Clearly the strategy there was not to leave Malik Beasley with a clean look from one of his sweet spots, but that started with issues in hiding Brunson and trying to keep Cade out of the paint.
The Knicks defense is predicated on helping and rotating like crazy, itās just getting harder and harder to continue to do so.
i agree with you here, i am just suspicious of the counterfactual. if you see how hard og and josh have to sink to help this year compared to last when they had more reliable primary rim protection, it looks like the floor may have tilted over the summer. but on the possessions when they kinda blow it and stick too closely to their man (by far the most reliable generator of the famous thibs “come on man” mouth play — if anyone has the quest 3, i strongly recommend watching some knicks games/highlights on stadium where you can see his reactions better than spike), it’s usually an absolute disaster at the rim. look at how poor kat’s rim protection numbers are even though our entire defense is fully defcon 1 against rim attacks. like i said, i’m not against trying more things, i just doubt they’ll make a big dent.
āsomeā is a loaded (i.e. useless) term. Is it 90%? 50%? 10%? If you canāt quantify it, it dulls the senses.
not falling for it lucy. in my experience there’s nothing that dulls the knickerblogger senses more than trying to more precisely quantify the randomness component of an inherently murky distribution. usually the only response it draws is a geo wellness check and a few “well i know it when i see it statboy(s).” and i get it. people should be suspicious and bored of methods that can only hope to grope at how much of something with so many possible confounders is really noise versus explainable. but it doesn’t seem sporting to keep placing the ball down.
thanks z-man…
for a while I thought atlanta had solved their defensive issues with having such a poor defender at the point…
had heard something about trae effectively moving around on defense to avoid getting targeted all the time…
keep checking the hawks defensive stats…they are not that good…
i really thought having josh and mikal on the perimeter with jalen would mitgate some of his issues (he’s slow and short)…
so if we did start playing some kind of zone defense, would it help with our 3 point defense?
poor rim protection aside, allowing 2 points at the basket is better than allowing shots to pour in from beyond the arc…
Josh drives me nuts at times cause I’ll see him standing virtually in the paint when the ball is still 30 ft from the basket and I’m like who the fuck is Hart covering then I see his man standing wide open in the corner from 3pt.
I agree they have to help protect the paint more with KAT at C but sometimes it’s ridiculous and honestly nowadays I’m not sure I’d rather prioritize defending the rim over the 3pt line especially since the Knicks are so good offensively now. It’s obviously much easier to outscore opponents if they’re not making 3s, force teams who are behind to take tough 3s to get back into the game.
Dunno how many times during game threads the Knicks get a double digit lead then I lament how they still collapse like crazy to defend the paint leaving wide open 3s when those shots are the easiest and quickest way for the other team to get back in the game. Drives me insane.
awwwwwwww, thanks for asking milo š
I’m doing well, about to go walk the dog to say hi to the goats…

Look, there is rarely a situation where a team has a defensive advantage at every position that doesn’t cost them dearly on the other end.
I do think that if we don’t acquire a legit 7′ rim-protector, either by Mitch returning or by an acquisition, a change in fundamental approach is merited. Meaning, figure out how many additional 2’s and FTs are you willing to concede for fewer 3’s….which is shorthand for helping/doubling less and soft-hedging/switching more, regardless of the matchup it leaves you with. But at some point it becomes pick your poison, and Thibs seems to prefer the poison with the variance antidote that works more often on 3’s than 2’s.
Long-term, I see only two viable alternatives: a) play KAT at the 4. or b) trade one of KAT or Brunson (obviously KAT.) I’ve been saying all along that we won’t be able to judge whether playing those two together with KAT playing mostly at the C can get us past the second round until we get to the playoffs. But the data is piling up that it is an iffy proposition at best.
Geo — again — for the win.
When I see something as counterintuitive and second-order knockoff effect as this thesis, I need quite a bit of actual evidence to overcome that headwind. Not really seeing it. Moreover, purportedly good wing defenders should be able to both help cover up weaknesses in the paint *and* cover well from 3.
The far more straightforward explanations, that square with common sense and intuition, and don’t have this big proof headwind, are:
(1) Thibs isn’t scheming the perimeter well for 2025 NBA basketball. Highly likely, for me at this point virtually certain;
(2) The Knick wing defenders’ reality doesn’t match their reputation in terms of inherent ability, whether it be physically or mentally. Possible, not proven, significantly less likely than (1);
(3) The Knick wing defenders aren’t playing hard enough. Possible;
(4) Kind of dovetailing with (3), the Knick wing defenders are playing too many minutes and are either pacing themselves on defense or literally too tired to play it effectively. Somewhere between very possible and likely.
In the Macri clip Raven posted, Macri had a ratio of “this pissed me off” 3s to total 3s of a third. He’s graceful and nice so concluded that the defense was still solid. To me that ratio shows pretty dreadful defense.
I’d add the question of whether we really think the wings on the great defenses don’t also have some degree of paint responsibility and also don’t actually help with paint defense as it shows up in the numbers.
Do we really think Lu Dort and Alex Caruso and Jalen Williams and Jalen Suggs are told to just focus on the perimeter and let others take care of the paint?
If there’s anything this board loves it’s good, smart management by the FO and the coaching staff. And this team, for all its talent, is stupid in too many ways:
1. The minutes thing.
2. The lack of bench development.
3. The defensive scheme allowing too many good looks from 3, while also having week rim protection.
It’s difficult to root for stupid.
“Iād add the question of whether we really think the wings on the great defenses donāt also have some degree of paint responsibility and also donāt actually help with paint defense as it shows up in the numbers.
Do we really think Lu Dort and Alex Caruso and Jalen Williams and Jalen Suggs are told to just focus on the perimeter and let others take care of the paint?”
But do they have to? They have iHart. I specifically remember Will Hardy (pre-Wemby) waxing poetic about iHart’s court coverage and how that impacted offensive efficacy. That was also a thing with Mitch…the ability to cover a huge radius both horizontally and vertically.
KAT is like the opposite of that. He plays significantly smaller than his actual size, and he doesn’t really defend a radius at all. He’ll get the modicum of “size/length” and even occasional well-timed contest/block/steal/disruption…but more often than not, opponents score over, under, or around him. He’s late, late, late on fucking everything…even when he is in a good defensive position.
At least at the 4, he will get more out of the “size/length”-type defensive advantage and have a 5 to back him up when he invariably gets blown by. That’s what worked well for MIN last year, and that’s what we should try to live with. KAT also had passing chemistry with Gobert and found him on many lobs…so while his offensive numbers might go down with Mitch at the 5, it’s possible that he actually generates just as many points per possession.
oh no, i seem to be managing that aspect of fandom, pretty effectively…
heck, the giants just gotta give me a slimmer of hope, and I’m back in with them…speaking of which, as soon as they can get competent again, I’m picking up a red with blue lettering jersey, not sure who’s number I’ll go with…
at one point it would have been an easy answer: 56…easy E himself though had made a strong case for number 10, especially with his second act…
speaking of the g-men, howdy g-man š
way awesome you’re feeling better…
been having this conversation with different family members about other family members, and to some degree myself – when your health is challenged, and it keeps occurring, it becomes a theme…
your focus and goals can really change significantly…just sort of surviving, trying to have a good day, just trying to finish the day…
rock steady g-man, rock steady…
the thing that really helped me to improve with my health, was the notion that if I was not well, couldn’t be of much use/good to the people who I care for…
Have you ever heard him talk about how he plays so many minutes? He takes plays off.
Of course he didnāt say it that brazenly. He phrases it as āconserving energyā on certain possessions.
Choosing not to close out on an open shooter in non 4Q minutes is a great way to conserve energy.
Brunsonās obviously doing the same thing. That dudeās got way more important things to save his energy for.
“Have you ever heard him talk about how he plays so many minutes? He takes plays off.
Of course he didnāt say it that brazenly. He phrases it as āconserving energyā on certain possessions.”
OAHBNAAHB.
Or, put another way, he’s a hustlebunny against his will.
Things I hope the Knicks are practicing over this long weekend:
OG practicing layups under Josh Hartās tutelage.
KAT only practicing raising his arms above his waist; otherwise resting.
Jalen practicing fewer dribbles.
Mikal practicing consistency.
Payne practicing humility. And passing.
Kolek and Huk practicing new ways to suck up to Thibs.
Sims practicing that fucking jump hook ā over and over and overā¦
Thibs practicing anything that makes him uncomfortable and takes him out of his zone ā going to a movie, eating broccoli, kissing a girl.
