    FROM SHAMS:

Brooklyn Nets forward Bojan Bogdanovic will undergo season-ending foot surgery, sources tell ESPN. Bogdanovic last played on April 28, 2024 for the Knicks before having an initial surgery on his left foot.

Once again, we had to give up a lot of picks for Mikal because they were the only things of value Brooklyn was getting in the deal.

Ima tell dad… at 83 he still has his priorities straight. He was a major source of my Knicks fandom, by the way. Had a service station by the 95 in Mamaroneck and worked on Oakley’s cars. We got some crazy tickets from him back in the day.

One of my most incorrect opinions during the Leon Rose era was that Bogey could be a key player for us in 2023-2024 and perhaps even beyond. Swing and a miss.

Once again, we had to give up a lot of picks for Mikal because they were the only things of value Brooklyn was getting in the deal.

And once again, the number of picks has never been the issue with the Mikal trade. It’s that Leon surrendered completely in the negotiation with Marks and let him take the 5 best picks we had.

Give 5 different picks to Brooklyn and it’s still a massive overpay for Mikal Bridges but you’ve maintained the flexibility you need to finish the job.

And if Brooklyn won’t do that, just walk away. It’s Mikal Bridges. He was never the final piece of the puzzle without Hartenstein here, and it was stupid to ever think he was.

Alan, that is clearly understood. However, the pick package was unprecedented for a player of Mikal’s caliber (borderline 2-way all-star on a great contract.) The only trade that even comes close is the Rudy Gobert trade, and he’s a 4X DPoY in his prime. If you think of Kessler as a draft pick, the difference is that Utah also got useful players Beasley and Vanderbilt, and less useful players Beverly and Bolmaro. They wrangled at least another first out of those players. That seemed like a huge overpay, but it was more justifiable than this one. Minnesota definitely had a contending core after making that trade, with two offensive superstars, one who had major upside (and still does.) The first season was injury-riddled. The second season they went to the conference finals. No telling how well they might have done this season if they tried a different strategy other than salary-dumping KAT. They had good bench pieces to either keep or trade.

On the other hand, the Knicks seem at least a piece short even after acquiring KAT for a bargain price, and have no draft capital or space to further improve the roster. They have one asset on the bench that is possibly worth an unprotected first (Deuce).

Personally, I think that Leon got impatient and fell in love with Mikal as the best answer to the Celtics quandary. But the most important reason the Celts are as good as they are right now is that they didn’t make that kind of trade. They added White, Jrue and KP on bargain transactions. They built a high-IQ 2-way core, and developed guys like Prichard, Hauser and now Kornet and Queta to fill out the rotation.

I’m still very happy with the team we have right now, and with Mikal in particular, but nothing short of either a) a championship, or b) consistent all-star level play from Mikal for the next 3-4 years will ever convince me that the trade was worth it. If Leon figures out a way to add quality depth, or better yet, to improve the starting lineup, all will be forgiven.

One of my most incorrect opinions during the Leon Rose era was that Bogey could be a key player for us in 2023-2024 and perhaps even beyond.

I think if Randle had come back (which we all thought was possible at the time) you probably would have been right.

Never getting to see this 12-man roster healthy is arguably the greatest tragedy of Knicksdom:

    1 Brunson, McBride
    2 Donte, Burks
    3 Anunoby, Hart
    4 Randle, Bojan, Achiuwa
    5 Hartenstein, Robinson, Sims

I really think that team would have won the chip last year. And I maintain that it blows this version of the Knicks out of the water because of its depth, balance, and lack of exploitable weakness.

    That was Leon’s masterpiece.

    Fuck Jacquez.

On the positive side, after this coming offseason, we will only owe 3 firsts to BK!

And while I agree with Z’s take, you can also look at the KAT trade as an underpay that balances things out.

Meanwhile, we did the right thing in not rushing Mitch back. If he and OG can stay healthy, that is an excellent (albeit short) rotation that can throw two very different looks at teams. I think that puts us back in “puncher’s chance” territory for this season, and we still have room to improve next season.

“Mikal Bridges was never the final piece of the puzzle, and it was stupid to think he was.”

But is that what Leon thought? According to Shams, the Knicks offered JR and Mitch for KAT on draft night but were rejected because Minny wanted a wing instead of Mitch. A week later they trade all their draft capital for Mikal, allowing them to keep the core (they wanted) intact and go for KAT. The 2 trades for the “final pieces” are interconnected; one does not happen without the other. The time lapse between the 2 is that the Knicks were trying to trade Mitch for a Minny acceptable wing so they could keep DDV.

But is that what Leon thought?

Yes, I think you can tell by the price he paid. If he thought he still had major work to do he would have at least held on to the ’31 pick.

When he was dealing with Ainge for Mitchell, for instance, he knew he had to keep something back for his next move and held the line.

“And while I agree with Z’s take, you can also look at the KAT trade as an underpay that balances things out.”

I have sort of mindfucked myself into accepting this, mainly on the premise that a) after making the Mikal deal, the prospect of acquiring a player of KAT’s stature (overrated as it is) without unprotected firsts seemed impossible, yet it happened, and it has worked out exactly as expected. More wins, higher ceiling. Probably still a bit short, but hey.

The mindfucking part is the assumption that if there actually were picks left over from the Mikal trade, Minny would have insisted on them, Leon would have caved, and KB nation would have been thrilled that he did. In other words, if the cost for KAT was Julius, Donte, two unprotected 1sts and the Detroit protected picks, my guess is that most here would have considered that a more than fair price.

In summary, I don’t see a world where the likes of Leon could have acquired both Mikal and KAT for less than we gave up in total. Leon seems like a decent, but not ruthlessly great, negotiator. But he did break the ice with both Toronto and Brooklyn, and with Klutch. Maybe that bodes well as teams start panicking about the luxury tax.

“When he was dealing with Ainge for Mitchell, for instance, he knew he had to keep something back for his next move and held the line.”

But reports were that Leon was annoyed that Ainge didn’t give him a chance to up his offer.

“I really think that team would have won the chip last year.”

Couldn’t disagree more. The Celts would have beaten them quite easily. But we’ll never know, so no use arguing over it.

The Celtics were assembled by basketball people. The Knicks were assembled by an agent. He did a pretty good job considering he’s an agent. A better job than I thought would be possible, to be honest. The basketball people in Boston just executed their version of the hybrid better.

Meanwhile, we did the right thing in not rushing Mitch back

It’s still quite possible we are rushing him. Time will tell.

The current injuries to Mitch and OG are a great organizational test. So far, based on their lack of clear communication with the fan base, it smells like the same old shit. We’ll see.

I personally will never give Leon credit for “holding the line” in the Spida negotiations. It was a dumb idea even at a lower price. It would have been a colossal blunder at the price Leon was reportedly willing to pay. I am eternally grateful that Cleveland bailed Leon out from executing that terrible idea.

The basketball people in Boston just executed their version of the hybrid better.

Because they followed the Strat method: win trades (or don’t make them).

“The mindfucking part is the assumption that if there actually were picks left over from the Mikal trade, Minny would have insisted on them, Leon would have caved, and KB nation would have been thrilled that he did”

Z-man, the logic in my mind says draft picks were never in play. The Knicks offered JR and Mitch for KAT. Minny said no. They needed a win now trade given what everyone knew was the rationale for letting KAT go. They countered with DDV, not loads of picks. The Knicks said no, but let’s continue to talk. They went after Mikal with picks knowing they could still get KAT

I always saw the strat method as “acquire good players at good prices or keep your powder dry.” But I could be projecting.

Brad Stephens’ trade acquisitions (White, Holiday, Porzingis) showed not just an eye for talent and fit, but one for value, as well. The net sum of acquiring all three of those guys is something like Robert Williams, Marcus Smart, and two inconsequential firsts.

“The Celtics were assembled by basketball people. The Knicks were assembled by an agent.”

I don’t think their respective backgrounds mean very much. There are basketball people all over the league that are fucking up their teams. Not a lot of agents get the opportunity that Leon has had, so the sample is pretty small, and that he’s done a better job than all of the basketball people that came before him as well as most of the basketball people around the league indicates that it really isn’t rocket science. It comes down to hiring and listening to the right people. For example, evaluating players in the draft does not need to be on the GM. The Knicks are clearly not special in this area. But that’s true about lots of basketball people.

“Z-man, the logic in my mind says draft picks were never in play. The Knicks offered JR and Mitch for KAT. Minny said no. They needed a win now trade given what everyone knew was the rationale for letting KAT go. They countered with DDV, not loads of picks. The Knicks said no, but let’s continue to talk. They went after Mikal with picks knowing they could still get KAT”

I don’t buy that the trade packages that were discussed before the Mikal trade did not involve picks. Even the final version required our only remaining “somewhat likely to convey” pick.

This is not to say that Minny wouldn’t be dumb enough to not insist on picks. But any GM that wouldn’t in that situation is a terrible negotiator.

“The basketball people in Boston just executed their version of the hybrid better.”

I remember vividly my joy when the Celtics “stagnated” by losing in the first round of the 2021 playoffs to the Nets and my enthusiasm when we “swiped” their backcourt of Kemba and Evan to start the next season. They are where they are for a reason.

What I’m saying is that after an initial learning curve, one that comes with any transition to a complex job, background doesn’t matter. Either you learn or you don’t. As the saying goes, there are people with 20 years of experience, and there are people with 1 year of experience 20 times.

The Celtics were assembled by basketball people. The Knicks were assembled by an agent. He did a pretty good job considering he’s an agent. A better job than I thought would be possible, to be honest. The basketball people in Boston just executed their version of the hybrid better.

Bob Myers was an agent and presided over the Warriors dynasty.

I’m not sure what Boston did was a hybrid. They sold KG & Pierce far above market price and turned those picks into Tatum and Brown. It’s more akin to what OKC did, which is getting damn lucky with a stupid offer.

I’m not sure what Boston did was a hybrid

Yeah, it was a miraculous bail out, like getting Luka Doncic in his prime.

But from that low point in ’21 Bernie mentioned, I think Stephens executed a hybrid.

I think there’s a mindset with Leon where he acquires players based on talent and reputation first, and fit second. I’m not saying he disregards fit entirely, just that it’s not foremost in his mind.

As a result we have a team that doesn’t seem like it’s ever going to be better than mediocre defensively given that our two best players are like 20th percentile defensive players. Brunson and Towns are fantastically talented, productive players. Trying to build a good defense around them doesn’t really seem possible.

I don’t get to watch many games with my son because his mother is very strict about a 7pm bedtime and I like coparent conflict as much as I liked the Scott Layden era. But I do get to keep him up a little late on Friday and Saturday. And man, it’s been a bad year for weekend night Knick games.

    So far we’ve watched:

    @ OKC, L (117-107)
    @ CHI, L (139-126)
    vs OKC, L (126-101)
    vs MIN, L (116-99)
    vs LAL, L (128-112)

I mention this because I see there are two games we can watch together this weekend and of course they are @ Cleveland, @ Boston.

Maybe we’ll finally break through! Or maybe I’ll just watch Dogman again. We’ll see.

Once again, we had to give up a lot of picks for Mikal because they were the only things of value Brooklyn was getting in the deal.

I hate the Grimes trade more every day.

Trying to build a good defense around [Brunson & Towns] doesn’t really seem possible

Do you believe Draymond has a couple years left?

I never mentioned him as a trade target because I just assumed he’d ride into the sunset with Steph. But now that Jimmy is there, let’s imagine he and Butler prove to be a volatile combination (crazy, I know).

Would you trade Mikal Bridges for Draymond Green, Moses Moody, one first round pick (2027), and pick swaps in ’26 & ’28?

Draymond (if he’s not washed) and OG together could solve just about every defensive problem that Towns creates. And unlike Mitch, Draymond knows how to be effective on offense without shooting.

The picks would make up for what we lose in the age difference. And Moody would be the perfect backup wing.

Golden State is not trading Draymond, unless Steph retires first. The plan is very clearly to let their contracts and Jimmy’s expire at the same time, and then rebuild.

“I think there’s a mindset with Leon where he acquires players based on talent and reputation first, and fit second. I’m not saying he disregards fit entirely, just that it’s not foremost in his mind.”

I don’t think this is true at all, at least a gross oversimplification of the truth when considered in its proper context. In other words, I don’t think Leon is turning down trades because the players are good fits but less talented than other players who are available. I mean, OG was acquired specifically due to fit, and is probably an overpay based on talent alone.

“As a result we have a team that doesn’t seem like it’s ever going to be better than mediocre defensively given that our two best players are like 20th percentile defensive players. Brunson and Towns are fantastically talented, productive players. Trying to build a good defense around them doesn’t really seem possible.”

But wasn’t it you who kept saying we had too many nuts and bolts but not enough chrome and leather? Leon went out and swapped out Randle (already here, cost nothing) DDV (cost nothing), and the equivalent of 3 seconds for Brunson and Towns, two of the most chrome and leather players in the league. He surrounded them with Hart, OG, Mikal, Deuce, Precious, and Mitch, all of who can be characterized as “fit” kind of players.

It could certainly be argued that KAT and Brunson are not great fits defensively, but who were the other chrome and leather players theoretically available that were better fits? Especially for the price Leon paid to get them?

If anything, Leon cared too much about fit by overpaying for Mikal, and perhaps for OG.

Golden State is not trading Draymond… The plan is very clearly to let their contracts and Jimmy’s expire at the same time

Well everyone knows they think Butler and Green will get along. What this book presupposes is, maybe they won’t?

I am Draymond curious. Doubt it will ever happen, but was also curious if others think he’s too washed at this point to help. I remember the last time I brought it up years ago, Donnie offered a very good scouting analysis.

Couldn’t disagree more. The Celts would have beaten them quite easily. But we’ll never know, so no use arguing over it.

    I agree with Z-Man.

IMO this version of the Knicks is easily the best team Leon has put together. Mitch is a key missing piece. At the end of last season the thinking was he might miss a little time or maybe even make it to camp. It turned out to be much later. Healthy Mitch solves 3 key issues.

    1. The team has a legitimate high qualty backup C
    2. You can pair him with Towns against big teams and/or teams hurting us in the paint.
    3. Depending on how and when you use him, Hart can probably spend more time playing with the bench unit and firming up both that unit and addressing our depth/minutes problems.

Watched the first season of Night Agent. How did this mindless crap, badly written and badly acted, become the most watched on Netflix?

I always saw the strat method as “acquire good players at good prices or keep your powder dry.” But I could be projecting.

The Strat method is that you can add quality players through the draft, free agency and trade and should therefore be open to using all those avenues to rebuild your team depending on where you believe the best values are located and which players are in play. And of course age and win curve matter.

    I’m huge on defense.

I’m huge on fitting pieces together in ways that enhance talents and reduce diminishing returns.

Once you have most of the core assembled, I’m OK with overpaying for the final peice (s) of the puzzle.

I think luck is a factor no matter how you do it.

We have come full circle to pretending “get good players” is a method and not a goal.

I think our strategy should be to score more points than the other team, both by throwing the ball into the basket and also by preventing the other team from throwing the ball into the basket. That’s the JK47 method. You may subscribe to my Substack for a small fee.

I love that we have the best Knicks team since the mid 90’s and already people are lamenting about how we aren’t good enough and talking about blowing it up when all of our key pieces are still south of 30.

Y’all need to relax and enjoy the ride. We have no idea how this is going to play out. Healthy with Mitch, I believe we can compete with anyone.

    Have some faith.

“Can we realistically compete for a title” is a much better question to be asking than “Should we keep Alexy Shved” or “does Emmanuel Mudiay have upside” or “will the triangle unlock Arron Afflalo.” The questions we are asking now are high-class questions, and I’m thankful for that.

I still think we should try starting Deuce and see what happens. Probably the wrong coach for that, but just spice some things up and see what the results are.

‘I still think we should try starting Deuce and see what happens.’

You mean in place of Brunson? Would give us a hellacious bench unit…

On a side note I watched the “We Beat the Dream Team” documentary last night on HBO Max, it was excellent. Allan Houston had a prominent role on the college select team lighting up the Dream Team from the outside.

It’s weird bc last year Thibs dropped Precious for Deuce and it saved the season.

We are 4-1 without OG, though. We had to lose a lot last year before he made the change.

What are the Celtics paying in luxury tax? I feel like that is an item that no one talks about. I can’t decide whether it matters or not.

I am definitely in the, “the aggregate price in picks to acquire Mikal and KAT was acceptable” camp. I understand that’s playing footsie with the truth but it works for me.

We need to add a truly great defensive big man who can cover for JalenKat. I don’t know if it’s Skinny Mitch but I am going to remain hopeful.

    @JLEdwardsIII
Thibs said both OG Anunoby and Mitchell Robinson went through a full practice.

    @JLEdwardsIII

    [extremely fake George Takei voice]

    Oh my!

“We have come full circle to pretending “get good players” is a method and not a goal.

This is a really silly. Strat’s pov is pretty simple to understand, and boiling it down to this is ridiculous. His continual refrain has been that it doesn’t really matter whether a GM chooses the hybrid “method” or the tank-and-rebuild from scratch “method” so long as execution is grounded in “winning transactions,” i.e. bringing more value in than you send out in each transaction you make. So if you want to call it an approach rather than a method, whatever. But it isn’t a goal. Strat never said that the “method” is to “get good players.” I don’t see why you continually try to dumb down what he actually said.

And objectively, Strat’s take, to the degree that it have differed from yours, has been more than validated. In fact, it’s only because Leon has made critical errors in asset valuation, ones that caused the KB hivemind to explode, that the team is not in an even better position than where it is right now. Even so, the larger argument was about whether the hybrid method was a sound strategy if executed with care. The answer is yes. The evidence is overwhelming. Case closed.

Thibs said both OG Anunoby and Mitchell Robinson went through a full practice.

    HERE WE GO FUCKERS!

I blame myself for bringing back the Mikal trade cost, and leading to the rest of this argument to return as well.

Unrelated to that, but vaguely related to NYK:

    FROM SHAMS:

The Dallas Mavericks plan to sign 7-foot-2 center Moses Brown to a 10-day contract, agent Ryan Davis of LIFT Sports Management told ESPN. Mavs bring in a big man with Anthony Davis, Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively II expected to be out extended time.

it’s only because Leon has made critical errors in asset valuation, ones that caused the KB hivemind to explode, that the team is not in an even better position than where it is right now.

Actually the hive mind argued that all those critical errors didn’t matter.

I blame myself for bringing back the Mikal trade cost, and leading to the rest of this argument to return as well.

Brunson and Deuce may be the only players on the roster anyone can mention without queueing up a debate that’s already been had a 100 times.

Thibs said both OG Anunoby and Mitchell Robinson went through a full practice.

We would need to start asking if users are 18+ for me to accurately describe how I feel right now.

That makes Brown, Baugh, and Okeke, I believe. Our whole g-league squad is gone, save TJ.

Edit: Nope, Okeke was waived. I assume for Lonnie

Alan, you can make up for that egregious error by answering the question posed above about Night Agent, a show I keep leaning toward clicking on but then keep refraining for reasons I can’t explain. Perhaps you can.

We have come full circle to pretending “get good players” is a method and not a goal.

The issue is that some teams and fans want to primarily focus on one specific path to getting stars/good players (at least initially) when the values and availablity of potential targets change.

IMO you should be changing your approach depending on what you need. what’s available to you, and where the best values are.

Specifically I think the value of picks relative to players tends to vary a LOT from year to year and period to period.

When you think picks are being overvalued you should be trading them for players and not saying “I like building via draft”.

When you think picks are undervalued, you should be stockpiling them both for current and future drafts and not saying “I want to accelerate my rebuild with veterans”.

Everything has to be on the able at all times.

I don’t mean this as a criticism because I could easily be wrong, but IMO picks have tended to be overrated on this forum because of the preference for drafting young players.

The Strat method is that you can add quality players through the draft, free agency and trade and should therefore be open to using all those avenues to rebuild your team depending on where you believe the best values are located and which players are in play.

I still do not understand how this differs from the very broad goal all 30 NBA front offices are simultaneously pursuing at all times. The valuable insights relate to the best way to go about this very broad goal, not the goal itself.

What skill sets are undervalued in the draft, free agency, etc.? Is the empirical tradeoff between worsening your draft position to get better worth it for a given team at a given time? Do offenses built around certain skillsets do better in the playoffs than other similarly ranked offenses?

I could go on forever, but having answers to these kinds of nuanced questions is what makes or breaks a front office. We’re all trying to stuff as much well-fitting production below the salary cap and/or aprons as possible, what’s the best way to do it?

“Actually the hive mind argued that all those critical errors didn’t matter.”

Actually I should not have used that term because one of the things I have argued is that there actually isn’t a KB hive mind, and that folks who agree on some issues often don’t agree on others. Sometimes there is near universal agreement (drafting Obi over Hali was a disaster, trading for KAT was a coup) and other times there is a variety of opinions regarding both the positive/negative aspects of a transaction and the implications.

But I think we can permanently dispense with the notion that the hybrid method is vastly inferior to the down-to-the-studs tank and rebuild. We can all concede that the latter method has more theoretical upside and more margin for error, but that difference was blown way out of proportion, and was gratuitously harped on every time Leon made a dubious decision.

No matter, I think we are all happy it turned out pretty well. Some still choose to pine over what could have been, and some still think we should have gone with a different POBO/GM and/or methodology from the start.

I think JK summed things up pretty well: “The questions we are asking now are high-class questions, and I’m thankful for that.”

We’re all trying to stuff as much well-fitting production below the salary cap and/or aprons as possible, what’s the best way to do it?

My answer is still that there is NO SINGLE BEST way to do it because the values, availability, needs and even rules are always changing.

Think of it like investment markets. There are booms and busts in all asset classes. If you want to get rich you don’t say to yourself, I want to get rich investing in A, B or C. You say, I think A is overvalued, B looks reasonable, but there are bargains all over the place in C. So you focus on C. Three years later you may be unloading C and buying A because the prices changed or there was a change in tax policy.

    Go with the flow.

We are 4-1 without OG, though. We had to lose a lot last year before he made the change.

Facts. I was both happy and sad to see Brunson and KAT win a few of those games via last minute heroics. Its soo annying having an idiological coach that players have to overcome. It may prove to be our achillies heel in the playoffs.

“Actually the hive mind argued that all those critical errors didn’t matter.”

Depending on which error we are talking about that generated endless debate, imo giving away 5 cents on a current dollar is not critical when you are doing it for potentially better positioning later. It may even turn out to be smart.

Also, once a team is mostly built, value loses importance relative to finding the right piece to finish the job.

Even the Mikal signing is still debateable even though I would agree we overpaid.

If Mikal didn’t have a very attractive contract we couldn’t also get Towns. So let’s say we had Towns but no Mikal, we would have more picks, but it would be tough to find a Mikal caliber player and fit to stay under the apron.

We are 4-1 without OG, though.

Precious has been doing an admirable job at PF, but we have better spacing with OG.

“The valuable insights relate to the best way to go about this very broad goal”

Right. But that’s exactly what strat has always advocated, isn’t it? It’s not the fundamental method as much as how you go about executing the method! You, among others, argued that the hybrid method was dumb, period, because it involved threading multiple needles and an inordinate amount of luck, especially because free agency was dead and relying on trading for legit stars in their prime that didn’t involve gutting your team was foolish, as the teams who legitimately rebuilt by the One True Method would always be able to out-bid you for those players without gutting their team.

Strat’s “win transactions” approach is grounded in the assumption that a smart executive could build a sustainable contender by either method, and that choosing the “hybrid” method and executing it well is at least reasonably comparable to tolerating years of losing and praying that you land the next Wemby.

“If Mikal didn’t have a very attractive contract we couldn’t also get Towns. So let’s say we had Towns but no Mikal, we would have more picks, but it would be tough to find a Mikal caliber player and fit to stay under the apron.”

This is a fair point. It’s complicated by OG’s (imho) somewhat-above-market-level salary, but I agree that trading fewer picks for a better but more highly paid player than Mikal would have made it hard to pull off the KAT trade, and finding a player post KAT trade that would benefit the team as much as Mikal that fit under the cap would have been tough. Not impossible, but tough.

I think we all agree that Presti is the best executive in the NBA, in the sense that he’s the guy you would want making your draft pick, or executing draft-day transactions, or making trades, or signing free agents. The way I read strat’s consistent take is that: if he was hired instead of Leon in 2020, then even if he were boxed into a hybrid rebuild methodology and was forced to hire Thibs as his coach, he could have build a team at least as good as this one and maybe better. Brunson is only here and on his ridiculous deal because of Leon, so Presti has to overcome that enormous head start. But even with that, my money would be on Presti, and if one agrees with that, then Strat is even more vindicated.

Brunson and Deuce may be the only players on the roster anyone can mention without queueing up a debate that’s already been had a 100 times.

Oh, we’ve had about 1000 debates about whether Deuce should start in the backcourt next to Brunson. Brunson is a less repetitively controversial figure, but from time to time someone will wonder whether having your best player be a very short, defensively challenged point guard who is that ball dominant can get you a title. (Usually, this doesn’t go very far, because Brunson is awesome.)

Watched the first season of Night Agent. How did this mindless crap, badly written and badly acted, become the most watched on Netflix?

I think there is a certain degree of Prestige TV Fatigue (as dramatized in that Simpsons episode that namechecked me). Shows like Night Agent, Reacher, and The Recruit feel like throwbacks to the old days of being able to turn on a scripted TV drama, half pay attention to most of the plot, and still enjoy a few action scenes, a few big twists, maybe a romance, etc. TV to turn your brain off to. There are better and worse versions of this kind of show — The Recruit is better than Night Agent at trying to do the same thing (though both are dumb and silly), and Poker Face is almost so good that it doesn’t qualify, because you don’t want to have it on with a second screen — but there seems to be a pretty clear desire for TV that actually feels like TV, rather than a very long movie.

Thinking about possible old starting lineup debates if Knickerblogger was around back in the day, going with the “big” backcourt of Houston and Spree with no PG would’ve been a fun one.

Watched the first season of Night Agent.

    yes, hard to understand 😛

I’m pretty sure those different streaming “top lists” are already bot controlled…

HAL made you watch that show…

like GPS, just sending you wherever the fuck it wants…human look there, go there, eat this…

    it’s happening/happened…

so excited to hear both OG and mitch are practicing…

glad OG got some much needed rest…thankfully there will be about a week’s rest prior to the playoffs beginning…

super psyched to hear mitch is soon set to return…

gotta try to temper expectations…our defensive stalwart hasn’t played much/any competitive basketball for a long time…

Thanks, Alan, great answer. I did need my mind turned off when I watched the first 2 episodes but less so afterwards and the show was just shitty empty calories. Raven, don’t. Maybe do Suites if you need a distraction, it’s a better mix of both mindlessness and fun (a very different series altogether, but to me served a similar purpose).

There is a new Suits spinoff (sort of; none of the original characters are in it, at least ot at first) debuting next week. The fact that that show became a streaming phenomenon a year or so ago speaks to how desperate people are for more easily digestible comfort food TV. (since there are much better versions of it)

My parents watched Night Agent and loved it. Tried to watch on their recommendation, but I thought it was one of the worst things I’ve ever seen. Stopped after a handful of episodes.

Action is enjoyable in a way that tension building drama isn’t, but it was just so bad…

and Poker Face is almost so good that it doesn’t qualify, because you don’t want to have it on with a second screen

I don’t think it qualifies. It’s a little too subtle and nuanced. I’d have to rewind if I opened up my phone a little too long… or at least I wanted to rewind because it’s actually worth it.

I know this show’s been around for a while, but my god, am I enjoying the hell out of Peaky Blinders. It’s probably sacrilege to say it, but it put it right up there with The Sopranos. Cillian Murphy and the rest of the cast are outstanding, and the sets and costumes from post WW1 England are awesome as well. Can’t recommend it enough.

i’ve been binge watching old seasons of Preacher and Gangs of London…somehow missed those when they first came out…nothing special but keeps me entertained…

Night Agent was pretty rough. I think I finished the first season, maybe, it was bad but at least had some action and I could watch while doing something else. My partner and I joked that it was the American network tv, in quality at least, version of the Bodyguard, square jawed actor stoically trying to protect someone against a government conspiracy. But more cheesy and stupid.

The only difference was The Bodyguard was actually great and had both great acting and legitimate twists. The two leads in Night Agent are so badly acted and written that it really undermined anything the show did well.

With that said I do find myself missing a good old procedural. I want to be able to pick up and put down a show without always needing to remember the story and the plot. Everything is such a commitment these days. Where are shows like House, the original Law & Order, X-Files, The Closer, West Wing, Parenthood, etc these days?

I remember enjoying the first couple seasons of the Good Fight and Poker Face is awesome, but I want more self contained shows.

I love prestige TV but I agree sometimes I want to half watch something and that is much harder these days.

    Not 100% yet

Josh Hart OUT Thursday vs Bulls, Knicks announce.
Patellofemoral Syndrome in his right knee

    OG Anunoby remains QUESTIONABLE.
Practiced in full today (right foot sprain)

    Mitchell Robinson remains OUT.
Practiced in full today (left ankle surgery) for 1st time this season

Makes sense to rest those guys, given the B2B vs. Cleveland. If OG plays it should only be briefly. And vs. Cleveland, they should all be on minutes restrictions if they play. Hopefully none of this decision-making is up to Thibs.

But where did this new Hart injury come from? He had 18/10/6 in the last game against the Hawks, and that will have been 8 days ago.

Patellofemoral Syndrome: Misalignment of the kneecap, overuse, or repetitive stress on the knee, Weak quadriceps muscles, Tight hamstrings, and Poor foot arch support.

    Note the use of “overuse.”

I’m someone who hates load management and the minutes police but considering there are only 28 games left in the regular season and the Knicks are virtually locked in to the 3rd seed even I would be willing to take it easy and rest guys next few weeks.

Josh Hart OUT Thursday vs Bulls, Knicks announce.
Patellofemoral Syndrome in his right knee

Dude plays 45 mpg of kamikaze basketball without getting hurt then gets injured on his vacation.

considering there are only 28 games left in the regular season and the Knicks are virtually locked in to the 3rd seed

We should definitely take it easy with 28 games to go but we are not locked into anything. We are currently 30th in the NBA in strength of schedule and we’re about to play all the hard games that we’ve missed out on so far.

Yeah don’t give a shit about strength of schedule, the Knicks have a 5 and 6 game lead in the loss column on Indiana and Milwaukee plus the tiebreaker over both. There’s not a snowball’s chance in hell the Knicks will even come close to dropping out of the 3rd seed.

Gee it’s almost as if giving our starters half as much rest as our opponents give theirs has some sort of cumulative “overuse” effect. Who could have ever guessed

    #Luol’d

‘Dude plays 45 mpg of kamikaze basketball without getting hurt then gets injured on his vacation.’

It might very well be that they just can’t reach him on his lounge chair on the beach, with earphones on and a fruity drink in hand. And he’s lost all track of what day it is.

Hart’s knee has been barking for a while. But sure, he probably plays too much.

Still, it’s nice to be heading into the home stretch with a fully healthy-ish roster.

I guess we actually *should* be expecting a Deuce start tomorrow night.

This one-game night is kind of odd, especially with the game not being until 10:00. I’m hearing that LeBron may be asked to play some center as the season wears on. Wonder how he feels about that.

Looking forward to the return of a full NBA slate tomorrow night, including our game, of course. We can’t possibly lose to that squad *three* times, right?

The barking for a while bit is somewhat problematic. These kinds of “traumas” often take as much time to come out of as they do to get into. It’s a way for the body to say shut it fucking down or things can get ugly. Totally correctable but we might not be seeing a fully healthy Josh back this year. Having no exposure to the imaging and the actual soft tissue, who knows?

There’s not a snowball’s chance in hell the Knicks will even come close to dropping out of the 3rd seed.

Man, don’t say this. You have a worse record than Cronin!

it’s nice to be heading into the home stretch with a fully healthy-ish roster.

It feels pretty precarious to me. Hart & OG have injuries. Towns & Deuce have been nursing injuries, too. And Mitch only just starting practicing.

Lots of players across the league are playing through some kind of nagging injury. My guess is that if it were a “just rest it for a week or play less minutes and it will all get better” thing, medical would insist. KAT is playing through a sore thumb and finger. That kind of shit hurts forever and gets re-aggravated whenever it gets hit (and you can bet opponents like Draymond and Dillon target these things) but players just play through it. Josh’s knee sounds like that kind of deal.

I agree with you, but now he’s *not* playing through it, and this is after having more than a week off. It’s worrisome, is all.

Z-man, maybe… I hope it’s that kinda deal. We just don’t know. The knee is a tricky thing. The symptoms that exhibit in the knee are usually an expression of a misalignment or trauma somewhere else (feet, hips, the 4th dimension) that are transferred as a matter of course. You cannot step wrong without it translating, and until that gets fixed it will never really heal. I’d be cautious equating these “injuries” considering how little we know about the actual trauma.

Yeah, not trying to be dismissive of the concerns, the injuries are real. Just playing off of my long experience with players being “nicked up” but playing on, often to the point where it isn’t a concern. Honestly, I am way more worried about OG’s foot and Mitch’s ankle than Josh’s knee. I think he’s out to give him an additional day and to avoid the back-to-back, and that if it were a single game vs. a more important team he’d be playing. KAT played through a similar knee thing going into the break. He sucked vs. the Celts and folks here said he was clearly compromised and shoul have been shut down until after the break. Then lo and behold, he posts b2b 40 point games and no one complained.

Well the Bornets have a worse offense rating than Utah, so maybe they will score less than 130 points and the Lakers will have a good chance. Mark Williams might have personal feelings about the Lakers though.

    FROM SHAMS:

New Orleans Pelicans forward Javonte Green has agreed to a contract buyout and intends to sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers upon clearing waivers, sources tell ESPN. Additional wing depth for the East-best Cavs.

Oh, well. Would have liked to get in on that action. T-minus 10 days until The TJ Warren Era begins, I guess?

“Oh, well. Would have liked to get in on that action. T-minus 10 days until The TJ Warren Era begins, I guess?”

If Javonte Green plays one non garbage-time minute in the playoffs for the Cavs, they are in big trouble. Same with TJ and us.

The Cavs now have Wade, Okoro, Merrill, Strus, and Green as bench wings. And we have “run starters into the ground.”

The Cavs now have Wade, Okoro, Merrill, Strus, and Green as bench wings. And we have “run starters into the ground.”

If we had any of those guys, would our strategy not be “run starters into ground”? It’s Thibs’ default setting.

Yeah but it’s important to have a quality next man up when he does. Green is no slouch. He’s a league average 3 pt shooter who defends well and rebounds his position. He could start for us tomorrow.

Surprised he picked the Cavs given how much opportunity we have for him right now. Maybe we don’t have the money to make an offer.

Hart said he’d likely have to get surgery after the season, so the knee issue isn’t going away.

My understanding is that we can’t sign any vet’s minimum players until March 1 when their prorated salary is below what we have left under the second apron. That said, Javonte Green is the very definition of a replacement-level player. He is a 6’4″ wing who can’t shoot except on ridiculously low usage and couldn’t stick on a minimum salary on two lousy teams. He is also pushing 32 years old. I don’t know where the idea that he is a decent 3pt shooter came from, in the two years he played over 500 minutes he shot 35% on 209 combined attempts, on a usage of around 11%. Shamet and Warren are both way better than him, and Delon Wright is at least as good, if not better. If Javonte started for us, either tomorrow or any other game, we’d be in trouble, or should I say, we;’d be in at least the same amount of trouble as if Delon started for us.

I think it’s pretty likely that Warren will be on the roster as soon as we can afford him. If healthy, he can actually help us in a pinch.

I also recall reading somewhere that Cleveland needed to fill the 14th roster spot that opened up when they traded 2 players for Hunter.

To be fair, hubert said Javonte was “league average” from 3, not “decent”. In that sense, that’s correct. As to “decent” I think that would be generous given that he’s 6’4′ and my guess is that he’s below average for SGs and SFs in that size range.

Lakers tied with Charlotte with 3:30 left.

That would be an hysterical loss at home for LA (fingers crossed)

I’m sure I’ve mentioned this here before, but I have running partners who are now in their fifties and still run 70 miles a week with no off days, ever, even when they are sick and even when they are injured. One of them said his goal was to win the Boston marathon when he turned fifty. I thought he was joking. He coasted to a 2:29, winning his age group easily. Also won New York, Chicago, and Tokyo that year. And was pissed that he came in 2nd in London.

He’s an amateur, mind you, doing it for shits and giggles. He has a full-time job sitting at a desk all day.

Josh Hart getting hurt after not stepping on a court for a full week could be because Thibs plays him a few more
minutes than his contemporaries every week… or that could be the availability heuristic speaking. Feel free to think however you choose to think.

I 100% don’t think it matters who gets that spot on February 28th, whether it be TJ Warren or someone else. It will be getting so much more attention than it will actually matter.

Correct…….unless injuries. Oh, who are we kidding? Correct…….even with injuries.
