Catching up and elevating a comment Strat made a few days ago. This is the best synopsis of this year vs last year’s team I’ve seen yet. Seems spot on.

The hope was that since Randle wasn’t a consistently good defender anyway, the loss of defense in the frontcourt (I-Hart) would not be so bad because OG would move to PF to replace Randle (upping the defense) and Bridges would replace DDV (upping the defense).

What happened was the gap between I-Hart and Towns on defense has been larger then hoped for and the upgrade on defense from Bridges relative to DDV has been almost non existent. That compounded itself into a bigger problem because if we aren’t guarding the perimeter at a high level, Towns being a weakness is even worse. That’s my -1 + – 1 = -3 theory.

So net, we more or less gave up a pile of picks for Bridges and instead of having a better team, we have a similar team that’s better on offense, worse on defense, and absent a lot of pick ammo and flexibility.

Philadelphia 76ers rookie guard Jared McCain suffered a lateral meniscus tear in his left knee, an MRI confirmed. He’ll require surgery and is out indefinitely, Sixers say. McCain, a Rookie of the Year candidate to this point, leads all rookies in scoring at 15.3 points per game

The 76ers are an injury mess.

    Lou Hudson
    Lou Williams
    Lew Alcindor
    Lu Dort
    Reggie Lewis, sort of…
OAKAAKs Lou Amundson and Louis Orr
    Coach: Lou Carnesecca RIP

    Here comes my lament(finally):
Hartenstein is really ballin for OKC so far. He’s only played 10 games, so I expect his numbers to dip a little. But 12/12/4/almost 2bpg looks reeeeeaaaaaallllllyyyyy good from him. I’m more than happy with KAT, but I think our offense would be just as good if we only added Bridges and were able to keep Hartenstein. May have even been better with the extra second chance opportunities. Still- I’m happy for Hartenstein and thrilled with the way KAT is playing for us. Win-win with a touch of what if?

    @geo:
I mean that I don’t really allow myself to enjoy life fully, because I eschew eating most of the foods that I really want to eat. I really love crap food like burgers and fries, onion rings, pizza, all manner of cheesy treats, fast food in general, etc., but I never eat any of it as I attempt to stay slim now that I’ve entered my seventh decade on this earth. Thanksgiving was very un-fun as I watched everyone else eat whatever they wanted to because they just didn’t care, while I took no second helpings and had zero desserts, even though I wanted to sample every single one of them that was available to me on the table.

See? Unhealthy relationship with food. 🙂

Keep in mind that a very large reason for why iHart is able to put up the numbers he is putting up is because Chet is out and he became the starter. That for sure wasn’t the original plan.

Dave Twardzik was a pretty important rotation piece in those good Portland teams…

thanks doogie…and, I hope your Sunday is moving along well…

from a distance it sounds like the eating discipline you exhibit may wear on you a bit…

thinking of what bob said yesterday though – sounds like you are just trying to give yourself the best opportunity to live a healthy life, maximize the time you have…

I can understand though how desire and discipline can bump up against each other…

my sis (mid 60’s and a few years older than myself) does really well with her diet…she’s had some health challenges, taking care of herself so well has made a huge difference in her quality of life…with some serious lower body injuries, her mobility in particular has been helped because she’s so careful.about what goes in her mouth…

hmmmmm, sort of sounds like you may have something specific in mind that you are trying to prevent yourself from becoming…

the thing I’m constantly needing to reinforce with myself is thr notion of moderation…

instead of drinking a gallon of whole milk a day, just having a few glasses of it…same with a lot of other stuff…

I’ve never really had a partner/spouse/companion in life to help keep healthy food choices on track…it’s particularly challenging when I’m around the boys (13 and 11), they can eat pretty anything…

it can be tough to watch…

I think everyday you wake up from now til whenever will be benefited by your ability to control your appetites…

inspired me to do some more reading about it, and you very much seem to be correct…

Good essay by Strat, yes — but not buying and need way more evidence for the allocation of the bad defense 100% to KAT/Mikal, 0% to OG.

OG’s never really played on great defenses and in fact has played on a lot of kind of disappointing underachieving teams a lot like this year’s Knicks. My look under the hood a few weeks ago at his teams’ consistently poor defense from the trifecta line was not very kind to him, either. He’s certainly good at possessions where his straight-on individual skills are at issue, and creates good IG clips — but there are 100-ish possessions in an association game and most likely something is amiss in the vast majority of those possessions that involve other defensive components that feed equally or more into ultimate team defense.

He’s back to negative DBPM territory this year, as he was in TO last year; DEPM likes him more but he’s only 55th in that, a lot of which is probably reputation.

The Overton window on him needs to expand. He *might* be as advertised by his biggest defenders on D, but the weight of the evidence is that he isn’t.

Oh, and obviously as per Edwards’s article in the Athletic, the FO doesn’t really believe OG’s an elite on-ball defender, but more of a free safety type.

    Telling.

    Well, I mean…

We have the 18th ranked defense. A tick below league average. We have the supposed bad defenders in our lineup: KAT, Bridges, Brunson, and the supposed not-that-good defender in OG. Then there’s Josh Hart. Hardly anybody else plays.

You’d think a defense like that, with three bad defenders, an overrated-not-actually-good-defender, and Josh Hart playing most of the minutes, would be a lot worse than league-average-ish.

Yet there it is. League-average-ish. Josh Hart must be some hell of a defensive player.

and thank you bob for that talk yesterday 🙂

It doesn’t seem like it, but we’re 14th in the league in 2pt% allowed and 18th in 3pt% allowed.

16th in opponent eFG%. Middle of the pack.

    Bob Love

You write it enough, Bob starts to look nonsensical (sorry Bob)…

    Not really my name 🙂

Having seen Bob Pettit for a half dozen years in his prime, I feel like slapping Fat Brian Windhorst every time he denigrates one of the greatest players ever. 10 time all NBA first team in 11 seasons. Better player than contemporaries Elgin Baylor, Oscar and Jerry West. Only Wilt and Russell better in his day.

Keep in mind that a very large reason for why iHart is able to put up the numbers he is putting up is because Chet is out and he became the starter. That for sure wasn’t the original plan.

Well, similarly, iHart took off for the Knicks after Mitch went down. Only question about his ability to handle a starting role is whether he can physically hold up… but I’d bet on him being healthy when it counts over Mitch any day of the week.

I feel like a lot is made of the run we went on after getting OG last year, but what about with Hartenstein in the starting lineup?

My sense is that the Knicks were a better TEAM then – more cohesive, stronger identity. Defense and rebounding. Beat teams by virtue of having the ball more often, taking more shots. Now it feels like we’re beating teams because we out-shoot them, and that just never feels sustainable, even if the peaks are gorgeous. Just a weird team though – great offense that plays slow?

What stings most about that ATL loss the other night is that, to me, they beat us by playing 2023-24 Knicks ball. Not a great shooting team but they get every offensive rebound, and Daniels was out-OG-ing OG. I felt like that kind of performance from ATL – where the team was down and then clawed back in – was eerily reminscent of where we were. And odd that we didn’t double down on that approach, though I suppose circumstances (iHart leaving) kind of forced our hand.

I am concerned about two things – first, that KAT and Brunson are not a duo that can win big. They are both amazing offensive players, but don’t do enough on the defensive end as 1-2 stars. And secondly, that we badly overpayed for Bridges. Not saying anything that isn’t common wisdom at this point… anyway, let’s see what the next 25 games looks like. Things change quickly in the NBA.

Ben at Knicks Film School has a good breakdown of our breakdown in the third quarter. It’s not one thing, any easy, obvious fix, just small errors piling up both on offense and defense. Some is sure to get better (Brunson making better reads and better passes), some maybe not (Precious not boxing out).

For those leaning on our middle-of-the-pack defensive eFG% numbers to conclude we are decent defensively, please keep in mind that we have played one of the easiest schedules in the league and nearly every opponent has had a dumpster fire offense and/or been missing their best offensive players.

If it’s looked like our defense has been trending up, that’s because the last 10 games or so have been against even worse opposition. Once the schedule balances out it’d be miraculous for us not to be bottom 10.

I feel like a lot is made of the run we went on after getting OG last year, but what about with Hartenstein in the starting lineup?

In December I Hart played 29.2 MPG and the Knicks were 6-9. Mitch played only 3 games in December. I Hart was the primary center.

OG arrived (IQ and RJ left) Jan 1st. The Knicks went 14-2 in January. I Hart’s minutes went all the way up to 31.8.

I’m guessing OG’s minutes were much more important to the team exploding than expanding I Hart’s extra minutes 2.6 minutes

BPL, the inverse of Strat’s theory is that in terms of plus defenders, 1+1 = 3 sometimes.

I think that’s what happened with OG + iHart. Elite perimeter defense and rim protection are both exploitable on their own, but combining them yields a benefit greater than the sum of its parts. This is basically OKC on defense. OG’s contribution was highly visible, but we’d have probably seen a similar delta in the defense if we started with just OG and added iHart.

Not giving iHart the third year really is the fatal flaw that sabotaged our rebuild. I saw someone argue here that maybe he wouldn’t have accepted it, and that argument is not convincing. A player is ALWAYS better off from a contract negotiation standpoint if his existing team has his bird rights. Other teams would have had to bid against us instead of automatically getting him if they exceed our paltry early bird exception. We could have matched the $30m and simply kept last year’s great team together, jettisoning Bojan to stay under the 2nd apron if we had to.

Man, if we’d just had iHart’s bird rights, kept Grimes, and passed on Bridges, we’d be on track for 60+ wins and have 5-6 excess picks to play with. Now we’re all in with a worse team that is deeply flawed, and the kind of player we need to fix it (a switchable, rim-protecting, floor spacing PF) would cost the price we paid for Bridges, if he even exists.

I dug up a study from 2020 that found just 53 incidences of facial fractures over 34 years of NBA play. That included just 15 orbital bone fractures and one sinus fracture.

Embiid has now had three just by himself.

Just for context, 34 NBA seasons would be ~15,000 player seasons.

16 such fractures in 15,000 seasons for the rest of the NBA, compared 3 in 9 seasons for Embiid.

These aren’t repetitive stress injuries or re-aggravations of existing injuries. It’s really, really, bad luck.

Tonight is Mikal Bridges’ 500th NBA game. He’s the sixth player in NBA history to play their first 500 career games.

Last person to do it was in the 80s.
