yesterday amid zman telling stories about dunking on joe barry carroll i made the world’s most boring post and the weblords adjudicated it fairly and damned it to moderation, but i’m concerned it may have taken down the entire windows infrastructure as well.

when i was in college i lost a summer job paycheck betting a d2 ncaa player i could take him in 1 on 1. i won’t mention the lead i was spotted. stick that in moderation and suck it.

As a 16yo college freshman, I got mouthy about my game with another student and challenged him to a 1-on-1 game for $5 (in 1974 that was like $100). My friends came to watch as he kicked my ass.

Which brings up the question as to how/why you were already in college at the age of 16. Impressive.

Actually just a quirk of the NYC school system back then….they had something called a 2-year SP program which skipped 8th grade and I was already young for my grade. I was hardly Doogie Howser.

Though it was not a game, when Olympia and York christened the Winter Garden at the World Financial Center, they hired Clyde and Pearl to participate. I got to shoot hoops with the legends ( Clyde was in his red Puma outfit). Sadly, the polaroids of this event have long disappeared.

*long sigh*(and this isn’t Knicks or even basketball related, just me adding my brand of quirky levity to the day since adulting caused me to NOT take the day off for EA’s College Football 25)

I saw some sad news this morning..
Though the liberties they took with the Master Chief was very..very strange, I was quite enjoumying seeing The Covenant in live action as well as some of the gun fights and such. But alas, Paramount has canceled Halo. *another long sigh* I knew it was coming because those of us who have been Halo fans since Combat Evolved didn’t appreciate them making John more human emotionally. And he shows his face too damn much in the show lol. But they were still telling a good story. And Halo is in my top 3 gaming franchises of all time(RE, Halo, Super Mario, God Of War, 5 way tie with Zelda, Gears, MK, Metal Gear, and GTA), so I was invested in whatever story they wanted to tell.

Sad day indeed when you add it to the fact that I probably won’t get a chance to play NCAA Football until tomorrow, because adulting.

    *even longer sigh*
    HELP

Poindexter, you are the first person I have encountered out in the wild who has any thoughts on that show at all. It was in development for years and years and years, went through multiple showrunners, bounced around different potential homes before landing on Paramount+, and then… nobody but the game’s biggest diehards seemed to even notice.

Hello guys, great basketball stories in the last couple of days all of you, thanks!

Do you remember “maybe he can be the backup 4” Isaiah Roby?
He just signed in Germany… with Ulm, Dadiet former team! 🙂

Yeah, it’s a little crazy for such a popular franchise, isn’t it? I think there are plenty of video games with GREAT storytelling, but they have been historically hard to adapt into live action. I for one would LOVE a Gears, Zelda, and Cyberpunk 2077 adaptation. But those 3 would be extremely hard to pull off. Especially Cyberpunk. But I’d have faith that since Keanu got involved and they were as faithful to the lore as possible, that his involvement would make a live action story go a little more smoothly.

I never dunked on him, but I once sold a painting to Joe barry Carroll in my youth. He apparently did very well for himself as an investor after basketball.

What are you talking about? LOL Are they shows or games? I’m totally lost.

The demands of the two mediums are incredibly different, even if the cutscenes can create the illusion of overlap. That a show like The Last Of Us is as good as it is is a miracle. Most of the time, you’re lucky to get something like Fallout, which has its moments, but is fairly mediocre by post-apocalyptic TV drama standards.

I once beat a college all-star one-on-one back in the day. Two caveats, however — he was an Ivy League all-star, and he was like 5’8″. Sort of a Nate Robinson without the rad hops. And it was only to eleven. Not sure if it was the cheese stands alone, but pleasing nonetheless. Especially as he was super pissed off.

Absolutely! And speaking of those two shows..
Last of Us was brilliantly executed, even if the story moved faster than the game. Or maybe I wasn’t ready to see all the events of the first game unfold in the show the way it did. Fallout is decent. My draw is Walton Goggins as The Ghoul, so I’ve been slowly getting into it. Partly because I wanna catch up on AHS, Snowfall, Shogun, and The Boys

I am talking about both. Mostly video game adaptations, though

So. Is there a Knickerblogger b-ball squad in the works for some Rucker-style tournament? Should there be? 😉

I once played in a charity basketball game against the New England Patriots.

I just missed getting into a pick-up game against 5 members of the Cleveland Cavs (Jim Chones, Foots Walker et al) back in Podiatric Medical School. The person walking into the gym in front of me was the 5th person so I was the alternate if anyone had to leave the game.

I had dinner with Dick Van Arsdale back when he was playing for the Knicks.

I have treated professional and Olympic athletes in many sports when I was in private practice. Sorry, no names due to privacy laws.

I have also trained with many world class runners and will be downing a Guinness or two with a couple of them in a get-together reunion tomorrow

what a wonderful way to wake up…I love all the stories, thanks so much…

hi poindexter, I got a buddy who loves the Halo game series…I’ll have to ask him about how he liked the show…

    it’s definitely a pretty iconic game franchise…

Edit: jinx z-man, seeing how you beat me to it, I owe you a refreshing beverage once we finally get a chance to meet and talk…

“jinx z-man, seeing how you beat me to it, I owe you a refreshing beverage once we finally get a chance to meet and talk…”

    Only if there’s a 1-on-1 death match beforehand…game to 15, I’ll even spot you.

oh goodness z-man, you should see the 2 boys (13 and 10) take me to task now when we play hoops…

I’ll do my best to keep up 🙂

I agree but Nintendo recently announced that they are developing a live action Zelda movie directed by Wes Ball. Truthfully, I’m not excited but I’m willing to give it a chance.

My little brother was a tough SOB in his youth. Used to play in the toughest pickup games in South Florida, where Keyon Dooling was a regular. Got dunked on more than you could imagine but held his own based on sheer determination.

The pickup basketball culture at UNC (Chapel Hill) was *very* competitive, as you might imagine. One time a couple friends and I were playing pickup basketball on one of the many campus courts and Reggie Bullock and PJ Hairston walk up with their girlfriends and ask if they can play. Reggie’s girlfriend begs him not to, as he’s “in season” and doesn’t want him injured. My friends and I were all pretty terrible and were a bit puzzled as to why they would want to play with us, but we let them in on the condition that they play on opposite teams. It turned into a game of dunks and one-on-one, though I successfully forced PJ to shoot over me once (I’m 5’10) and he bricked it.

When I was living in Atlanta I walked past a park and saw a big crowd watching Cavs-era Iman Shumpert play 1 on 1. He was playing at half speed and burning everyone but kept missing his layups–a microcosm of his career, if you ask me.

Since I’ve been in Chicago, I played against one JuCo guy who is transferring to UIUC this year who was obviously significantly better than all the former high school players I play with; and an basketball alumnus from my current institution (which is D1) who is 6’8 and plays on the Irish national team.

Fun times, though I hate losing…

There is something very humbling, if not humiliating, about doing anything you have some aptitude in with an actual professional. I thought I was a pretty good singer before I participated in a fundraiser at my school called “Night of The Stars” that featured front-line Broadway talent.

With basketball, it first hit me when I worked at a camp for kids with emotional disabilities. I was playing pickup when one of the staff members, a tall, spindly guy from the ‘hood who seemed ancient at the time but was probably in his late 40’s, didn’t care for our youthful trash-talking. He proceeded to “Iceman” us in every possible way. I just couldn’t believe how big the basket seemed to him. That happened again in college, and then later in pick-up games and in the Asphalt Green league on the UES vs. guys like Rod Strickland’s brother and other Rucker legends. These guys, even the old, out of shape ones, would literally be carrying on conversations and laughing while I tried to play my best defense against them, and just score at will as if they were warming up in an empty gym.

    Geo! Salute to you!
Let me know what he says..I’m always interested to hear how different others’ opinions of that particular show are. I probably lean a little to far in the understanding why they’re doing the story this way side.

I played in an adult rec league against Tim Hardaway Sr shortly after he retired. I kid you not I actually talked some trash to him while he was shooting FTs about always losing to the Knicks. He was actually a very good sport about it!

I played organized basketball against the Virtus Bologna under 16 team, where a very young eventual future 3pt challenge Champion Marco Belinelli (13 years old at the time) played amongst 15 and 16 year old boys, me included.

He and the team thoroughly kicked our asses, but I managed to be the leading scorer for my team… with 8 points (and two of them were a very, very blatant traveling violation).

    @wojespn
The Memphis Grizzlies are trading forward Ziaire Williams and a 2030 second-round pick via Dallas to the Brooklyn Nets for Mamadi Diakite, sources tell ESPN. Williams was the 10th pick in the 2021 draft.

Even the Grizz blow draft picks sometimes.

And Diakite has been a busy man this offseason!

Two other stories, since it’s a story thread today. I never played organized ball as a youth. Self-taught pick-up junky. Had a decent jumper, but I learned a dirty little secret. There was usually one good player on the other team, and if you locked him up you usually won. And I loved to win and keep playing, for hours sometimes. So I played vicious, lock-down, denial defense (one reason I appreciate Thibs) and my team almost always won, no matter where I was. It was not always appreciated by my opponent, and I had to defend myself now and again, but it was definitely a winning formula.

I did finally play organized, in my young adulthood. Was working at a big publishing company (because when you live in Manhattan but your career is something esoteric, you either wait tables or work in publishing), and I was convinced to join their Fortune 500 team. A significant number of players in that league were 6’8″ or bigger, and lots of rumors of NBA tryout characters. I actually started a bit because I played defense, but honestly I don’t think I deserved to be out there. Definitely felt like a boy among men (and I’m 6′ even). Very demoralizing.

I was on a little league team with BJ Surhoff (long MLB career) and his older brother Richard (short MLB career as a relief pitcher). I learned to play basketball from their dad Dick who played briefly for the Knicks in the 50s and ran the Rye Rec Ctr. Hung around a bit with them and BJ’s close pal John Greer the year he won the national punt, pass, and kick competition. Three of my older brothers’ highschool friends at the time went on to have brief NFL or pro soccer careers. Aged 12 to 14 I’d go from tossing rocks at cans or footballs through rings with guys who seemed to have rocket launchers instead of arms, to practicing my 12-foot jump shot while Mr Surhoff hit a seemingly endless series of threes, to being in touch football or pickup soccer games with my brother and his friends who seemed bionic. I was a normal pretty good athlete. I realized later that it was a bit weird to have a bunch of future or previous pro athletes in my small town (Rye pop ~10k) sports circle growing up.

I remember some folks here saying at draft time that Ziaire Williams was a sure-fire bust. Looks like they hit the nail on the head.

If only we hadn’t wasted Diakite in order to get [checks notes] Mikal Bridges, Williams could have been ours!

    Dolan’s toy is broke

I’m starting to wonder if the Sphere is going to cost us a championship. Can Dolan hemorrhage enough money to scare him out of paying the luxury tax? Did this motivate the league letter?

The Knicks are owned by MSGS, not James Dolan. It could cost him his job though.

The Kolek to Dadiet connection will keep us contention for summer league titles for years to come

Kolek with a dandy dime to recover from some matador defense. These kids have potential but need some coaching up.

Alright Kolek really might be one of the best passers we’ve had in a couple of decades

I was gonna ask if he’s the best pure playmaker we’ve had since Mark Jackson.

I would already die for Tyler Kolek. Hang the fucking banner.

Jokubaitis looks good but keeps missing

Kolek also missing more than I’d like

    Dadiet coming alive

He’ll have to put it all together but Holland has some serious tools.

Kolek looking a bit like the PG for the big league club…

has dadiet made any shoots other than layups or dunks?

    This game or all SL?

Holland was actually Hollinger’s number one pick for this year’s draft. I’m not surprised he looked good.

Looked it up, apparently he hit back-to-back 3s on Tuesday against the Nets. That’s it. Everything else at the basket or the line.

Kolek thinks the game fast as fuck. He has elite processing. With adequate ball handling and ++ passing if his shooting is decent he might be the greatest basketball player that ever lived into perpetuity in this universe and any other.

I have only one good pickup game story. 20 years ago or so I was playing a pick up game at the old Reebok club with a college friend. Puffy (now P.Diddy) is playing on the other team, but my friend has no idea. My friend fouls him, a touch hard, but nothing special and I have to pull them apart. Needless to say, it could have ended badly for my buddy. Cooler heads prevailed.
