It was pretty clear to me right from the get-go that we were likely talking about a torn achilles. The lack of a severe twist, the lack of intense pain….then the ability to hobble followed by the carting off and then the walking boot. None of that looked like an ankle injury. Once again, a Jets season is likely dashed before it even begins.

I sometimes wonder whether Joe Namath really made a deal with the devil to get that 1969 Super Bowl win.

Or is it possible that this is the break that Zach Wilson needed to take the next step to greatness?

    Nah. Same ol’ Jets.

I’m not a big football guy, but I think the Jets are way too talented and veteran oriented to just throw away a season. I’d expect them to be in the market for someone that can take over the QB spot if Zach Wilson is struggling. I’m not sure who’s still out there, but there has to be someone that’s competent enough to use all the weapons the Jets have.

Do you think we just saw Rodgers’ last game? Is he going to want to come back next season? I know he is a person driven by spite, and he wanted to prove that he could win away from Green Bay, but he will also be 40 years old, coming off a nasty leg injury. That will not only be a lot of work, but there’s no guarantee he’ll be any good if he does return.

I think Rodgers will play again. It’s a tough injury but so long as he comes back 90% or better, he still has game and probably doesn’t want to end his career on such a down note.

Agree with Owen. Even if he was willing to do the work to come back, you have the dynamic with the Jets as they would be outfitting the roster during his rehab to be able to win without him. Could easily turn into Bernard King 2.0, but without the good will Bernard had amassed. And I don’t see a Washington in the future for him, and can’t see him settling for a back-up role.

Rodgers just announced to be out for the season. Wow. Anyone think that those four snaps will *not* be his entire Jets career? He’s turning 40 in December—I can much more likely see him hanging it up than going through that tough rehab (even tougher at 40) and coming back next year. And to think of everything they gave up for him. Bet he wishes he didn’t gift them that $35 million for literally no reason now. (They should have used it on the offensive line *immediately*.)

as a lifelong jet fan…i’ve seen this movie before…with that being said…i am still in a bit of shock that it only took 4 snaps…

wilson is horrible…but the free agent list is no bueno…they’re fucked…

oh, and i had got tickets for that sunday night game against the chiefs for Mahomes vs Rogers….and was going to fly from Cali to NYC that weekend…neeedless to say…don’t think I am boarding that flight

Yeah it really sucks, it’s 99 all over again. The lesson from that year is to get an adequate QB in as fast as possible and don’t let Rick Mirer (Zach Wilson) fuck your season.

    good morning z-man 🙂

been thinking of you a bunch…i know you’re coming up on a year now without work (although it sounds like you’ve stayed connected a bit, and even went in to help out during the last year)…

i’m just wondering what lessons/revelations there’ve been for you reference life after work…

are you sleeping more? have you lost weight? have you read any books? are you living healthier?

what do you find yourself doing most days?

i remember talking to a buddy not too long before leaving work, he was looking at this being his last year working, and then he was going to head back home to romania…it was funny, he told me him and his wife were disagreeing on which of their childhood towns they should return to 🙂

he mentioned a fear of not knowing what to do with all the time he would have…a thought which had never even crossed my mind…

i hope all is well for yourself and the family…

Hi geo! Yes, it’s been a year and I’m in a really good place with it. I am still very closely connected with my old school, was in recently to help with some clerical work and will probably go in from time to time to help out.

My current routine right now is all about my kids. My 24yo son who struggles with lots of stuff (including being swindled into being a Knicks/Mets/Jets fan by his idiot dad) is enrolled at a local community college after successfully completing a summer program at Vassar College which supports CC students contemplating transfer to 4-year colleges. It’s been a long, tough road for him to this point, hopefully we continue on a path towards happiness and independence. My younger daughter is in her last season of college volleyball and has matches/tournaments every weekend, so I am making 4-7 hour drives every weekend either to NY’s North Country And I always put the Dylan/Cash rendition of Girl from North Country on spotify at the 5-hour mark when I get to the beautiful stretch of fall-tinged countryside from Tupper Lake to Canton after having stopped for a quick an IPA at the amazing Racquette River Brewery. It helps that a) she’s the best player on the team and never comes out and b) VBall is generally fun to watch! Nice group of parents too and lots of tailgating and post-game fun! My oldest just moved into her own apt in the city and now has a boyfriend who might be “the guy.”

I sleep a bit more but not much, maybe stay up later….I am trying to lose weight but not hard enough! Definitely not eating or drinking any healthier, especially with all the traveling. Those hotel make-your-won waffles always reel me in!

As to work, I am doing some math tutoring…pays well here in the ‘burbs! Once volleyball is done in November, I might look into leave replacement gigs at schools up this way. Not sure whether to do teaching or adminisration…but a gig with a shelf life of a couple of months sounds like a good way to check out whether I want to return to full-time work in a less stressful capacity. I truly don’t miss the job I left….it was just not healthy for me, either mentally or physically. But I actually do miss aspects of the routine.

Hope you are adapting well to the recent changes in your life and are rewarded with an ass-kicking Knicks season! Having your main sports squeeze doing well cures lots of ills!

Is there any legitimate strategic reason for delaying extending Quickley?

This seems like a no brainer to me. Pay that man his money.

    Kevin Porter, Jr.:

    (1) gets suspended by the Trojans for personal conduct issues, gets drafted 1R anyway
    (2) gets arrested for a felony weapons charge, grand jury declines to indict
    (3) has an outburst so bad in the locker room (because they traded for Taurean Prince???) that the Cavs decide to trade or release him
    (4) gets into an altercation with an assistant coach, gets suspended

    And here we are–

    (5) Signs an $82M contract; less than a year later, viciously assaults his girlfriend and is virtually done as an NBA player, aged 23.

wow…just wow…thank you sooooooo much for sharing…you know, it means a bunch 🙂

something i speak with the kids about these days – take care of your body…

it sounds like you have a wonderful support system in place…i understand you yourself are a foundation to others, but that secure social connection is super important…lots ands lots of work/effort/stress/money – but such a huge key blessing…

ha, just bought this poster (putting up more mindful reminders throughout the home) – of all the things you can choose to be, choose to be kind

i always love to hear the passion/sincerity in your voice…what an amazing journey you’re on…

Porter Jr. thing just makes me sick.

Women’s volleyball is fantastic. Whenever it’s on tv I watch and I love it. Much more interesting then the Men’s game in a way that the WNBA is not.

I am not a football guy but I continue to think that the quarterback being the most important player in sports is bullshit.

Great to see you’re thriving in retirement, Z-Man, and don’t forget to keep me posted about your daughter’s season. We have women volleyball here at FCPorto and maybe i can put in a good word to a scout of theirs. 😉

    You’re cherry-picking the negatives, Jowles.

Here are some positives about Kevin Porter jr:

    (1) didn’t storm the Capital on Jan 6th.

    (2) didn’t funnel seized property back to Russian oligarchs following the invasion of Ukraine.

    (3) probably doesn’t like Pickleball

    (4) isn’t a Bro Country artist.

Women’s volleyball is fantastic. Whenever it’s on tv I watch and I love it. Much more interesting then the Men’s game in a way that the WNBA is not.

Yeah, i agree. I think men are just too powerful and so there isn’t a lot of exchanges, and women are still powerful but we can watch points that are well defended and it’s less obvious to know which team will score the point.

of all the things you can choose to be, choose to be kind…

That’s a great one, Geo, and i think it suits you really well. 😉 How are you doing?

I think it’s embarrassing to CBS to place at 59th a player that made the All-NBA team 2 out of the last 3 seasons.

    (5) Signs an $82M contract; less than a year later, viciously assaults his girlfriend and is virtually done as an NBA player, aged 23.

I really can’t understand domestic violence. Well, i don’t understand violence at all, i think it’s stupid, but towards your loved ones it ‘s even harder to understand.

    Embarrassing admission alert:

I once punched a wall during a drunken argument with a fiery girlfriend who grew up in a terribly dysfunctional household that only knew how to fight (whereas I grew up in a family that never fought), was so embarrassed that I stormed out, realized after the fact that it was MY apartment, and was so embarrassed by THAT fact that I spent the night under a bush in Carl Schurz park.

That was my first and last act of domestic violence. It was not my last time sleeping under a bush in a major urban area, however.

Porter’s contract is mainly non-guaranteed so fwiw he cost himself tens of millions of dollars

Is there any legitimate strategic reason for delaying extending Quickley?

There is if he’s trade bait.

Children, and the adults they become, are profoundly impacted by the family circumstances and socioeconomic environment in which they are raised. This is especially true when there are underlying mental health issues. The negative impacts of chronic neglect, abuse, or other forms of profound trauma were painfully evident in many of my students over the years. And sadly, there are glaring inequities in helping kids navigate their mental health issues. kids raised in one set of circumstances get needed support and physical/mental health care for both acute and chronic issues. Kids raised in another get, well, something less than that.

This doesn’t excuse domestic violence or any other criminal behavior. Anyone who engages in it should be held accountable. But it does always make me want to take a deeper look. For example, I learned the following about Kevin Porter Jr. from his wikipedia page:

“The father of Kevin Porter Jr., Bryan Kevin Porter Sr., pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter, served a prison sentence, and later died in a shooting when Porter Jr. was four years old.”

There is often a backstory involving abuse, neglect, or trauma in domestic violence cases, and often an accompanying diagnosis of untreated mental illness, whether congenital (e.g bipolar disorder) or acquired (PTSD).

Otto Porter jr and Michael Porter jr are both swell guys and model NBA citizens. I blame Kevin Porter jr’s shortcomings on his first name. All Kevins seem like they’re on the verge of implosion. Kevin Durant, Kevin Spacey, Kevin Federline, Kevin Nealon…

“Great to see you’re thriving in retirement, Z-Man, and don’t forget to keep me posted about your daughter’s season. We have women volleyball here at FCPorto and maybe i can put in a good word to a scout of theirs. 😉”

lok thanks cyber! She plays in NCAA Division 3, and compared to the top D-1 teams like Nebraska, Texas, Stanford, etc., it’s a much slower, more below the net affair. But she is probably one of the best conditioned athletes in D-3 Volleyball. In the 2019 Crossfit Games, she ranked 70th in US and 132nd worldwide in the 16-17yo bracket. And she has to be because even at this level she’s very undersized, routinely giving up several inches to her opponents across the net. Although she’s super quick and jumps out of the gym, at her height there’s not much of a future in indoor volleyball after this season ends beyond rec leagues and coaching. I think she could be a decent beach player, where even though height is still a plus, there is more of a premium on skill, athleticism, and tenacity. But alas, the kids in California and Florida grow up playing beach volleyball, whereas like her, most in my area never touch a volleyball until they are 12.

But I’ll keep your offer in mind, especially if we have to flee the US if Strawberry Blonde Benito avoids prison and gets elected. Portugal is high on our list of sanctuary nations, and cybersoze is our designated point person!

alright donnie, seeing as how you seem to have achieved next level in regard to your mindfulness – please tell me: what do you know about non-reactivity…

you seem to have found a way to not have yourself so heavily affected by your environment…

and, i like the lack of judgement you seem to place on stuff…

“i wanna party with you 🙂”

Does waking up drunk in the subway terminus of the wrong train at 3am count?

    @wojespn
ESPN Sources: After signing JaVale McGee to a free agent deal, the Sacramento Kings are waiving centers Nerlens Noel and Neemias Queta to give them a chance to play elsewhere. Both signed partially guaranteed one-year deals with Kings this summer.

    Sorry, Cyber…

I see that if i go party with you guys, i’ll end up under a bush in the terminus of the wrong train. 😀

Call me crazy, but I think Wilson can do ok (if not great). He has a terrific team around him and although the O-line is still iffy, it’s better than when he last started. Just lean heavily on your runners & D. There won’t be a SuperBowl, but who cares about football anyway?

    Sorry, Cyber…

I think it’s for the best, Alan, because with a new team he can still sign a 2-way contract. So it’ll probably be easy to find a new team, or at least i hope so. I know it won’t be on the Knicks because we seem set at center, although i think he would outplay Sims because Queta can score around the basket, he’s not all dunks and putbacks.

Does waking up drunk in the subway terminus of the wrong train at 3am count?

    🙂

    I have a similar story.

I was partying in the city after work in my early 20s. I got drunk out of my mind. I don’t remember anything including getting on the subway. I woke up in a train at a NYC subway stop I never heard of. I got off the train and asked a token clerk which borough I was in. She said, “Queens”. So I told her, “I want to go to Roosevelt Ave in Jackson Heights”. She said “You just got off the train to Roosevelt Ave”. Apparently I managed to get on the right train, fell asleep, went to the last stop, on was on my way back to where I had to go.

The good part of the story is that I had my wallet in my suit jacket pocket with a lot of cash and credit cards. I was clearly out of it. Anyone could have taken the wallet very easily and I never would have known. No one touched me even though I went through an area that was known for higher than average crime.

If we’re sharing falling asleep on the subway stories.

1999 I’m living in New York for a semester studying an acting school. I go to a house party up in Washington heights. I lived off west 4th street in the west village.

I get so messed up I fall asleep on the A train and woke up at the very end of the line in Jamaica bay. I must have been asleep for over an hour. Luckily no one robbed me. It sucked though cause I woke up and had to ride it back having sobered up a bit all the way back to west 4th.

I thought my experience was unusual. Apparently it’s the norm. We are all a bunch of drunks 🙂

On a more somber note, if anyone of you heard about that horrific murder-suicide a couple of weeks ago involving an UWS dad killing his wife, her two kids, and then himself, the mom was a former student of mine, a delightful kid who grew up into an amazing adult. I used to run into her for years after she graduated… she babysat for kids at the elementary school across the street. It was devastating to see the name and the pictures.

Sometimes the world is just too small and there just aren’t any words when it hits so close to home. Most of my former students are still 13 years old in my mind’s eye, and it’s sometimes hard to process that they actually do grow up, or that they don’t all live happily ever after.

(Not always, though…I was around long enough to have several students who were the kids of former students!)

hi cyber, been thinking a bunch about your question…

how are you? can get complicated at times…

one of the things i always appreciated about living in new york was the level of forthrightness coming from everyone…

people wanna tell you their story…ask someone how they’re doing – you can get a pretty engaging interaction going…

out here in cali, ask someone how they’re doing – all you’ll mostly hear is: fine/good…and that’s about it…

my sugars are getting better, waking up under 140 now (that’s the magic number for diabetics, gotta stay below 140)…

i’m down about 10 pounds since i cut out soda and most sweets…

it takes a few days to recognize when an anxiety episode begins or ends…the most recent started early august – i think it’s over now…big relief…

i’m very blessed to be in a situation now where i don’t really have to push myself too much during the 6 weeks or so of the episode…that makes a huge difference in quality of life…

i’m very blessed, my health situation could have left me homeless and forgotten…

yep, there but for the grace of god go i…

went on amazon and picked up a bunch of mindfulness posters to put up around the house…

    – box breathing
    – 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique
    – things to release
    – dialectic thinking
    – how to produce happy emotions

and most importantly reminders to be thankful and grateful…crazy that that turns out to be one of the most critical keys to happiness in life…

    i believe a bunch in slogans…

getting ready to delve in to the world of psilocybin…doing a bunch of research now…

what intrigues me the most is the idea of unblocking some stuff inside…it’s like having emotional constipation…

first learned of magic mushroom stuff related to migraine relief…

i’m still a fairly paranoid person, so safety first, second and third…

it’s funny, i need to remind myself constantly that things are good, i’m doing good…

always that odd feeling of: am i missing or forgetting something

how are you and you and your family?

if it’s okay for you to share – do you have a small or large family?

On a more somber note, if anyone of you heard about that horrific murder-suicide a couple of weeks ago involving an UWS dad killing his wife, her two kids, and then himself, the mom was a former student of mine

So sorry about this, Z-man. How does one keep trust in humans after something like this?

what do you know about non-reactivity…

I went for my annual physical today and had high blood pressure for the first time. So, all this disengagement has done more harm than good it seems. So, uh, I don’t know where I go from here. Go Knicks, I guess?

I’m sorry to hear about blood pressure, Donnie. Sometimes simple things can help. For example, my own experience was that when I treated my sleep apnea my blood pressure went down significantly.
