I’m hoping that between my kid’s volleyball season and the Jets, I can have enough to keep me occupied during the next month of NBA vacuum.

I skipped all the sportsball yesterday binging Drops of God and I’m feeling pretty happy about it today.

    @TheAthletic
    No team has ever

    ◽️ Lost 40-0 or worse
◽️ Lost the sack battle 7-0 or worse
◽️ Lost the turnover battle 3-0 (or worse)
◽️ Had a blocked FG returned for a TD
    ◽️ Threw a pick-6

    in the same 𝙨𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙤𝙣.

The Giants did it all in one 𝙜𝙖𝙢𝙚.

“The Giants did it all in one 𝙜𝙖𝙢𝙚.”

Not to mention that it was at home and on national TV….yikes! I’m hoping that the Jets don’t meet a similar fate tonight…the Bills are really good and who knows how all the hard knocks ARod hype will play out? I REALLY hope that they come out guns blazing…us Jets fans have suffered long enough!

It’s kinda crazy that every NY team* in 2023 will have gone or will be going into their respective seasons with moderate to high expectations…and so far the Mets and Yanks crashed and burned, and the Giants had their worst opening day (or any day?) debacle in their storied history.

*except maybe the Nets but even they are pretty good! And I don’t really follow hockey except if the Rangers are in the playoffs so can’t comment on the Devils or Islanders…

My Raiders won their opening game but they look like an incredibly boring team with 7-10 written all over them. There’s a pretty hard Josh McDaniels-related ceiling to anything that’s gonna happen over there. I dunno, maybe 7-10 is being kind of generous.

So I’m adopting two more exciting teams this year: the Jets and Lions. The rest of my family are diehard Jets fans, and have never wavered through all the decades of horseshit football. Seems like the Jets might actually be involved in some meaningful games this year. Same with the Lions– my wife’s family is from Detroit and they’ve been watching terrible football even longer than Jets fans, and it looks like things might finally be coming together for them too.

Jets-Lions Super Bowl. Let’s do this!

Lebron with comments about bringing all the stars for the paris olympics has me hopeful that we might see curry and durant and lebron on the same team in an actual competitive game ….

this is also a sad realization that all the best american stars are really old and that the pipeline of american talent has kind of sputtered as of late… zion’s health and morant’s dimwittedness being the notable offenders…

hopefully boozer and flagg can help us out for 2028 because that actually looks like a year where we look very vulnerable to not win gold…

On the one hand, I have so many Jets fans in my life (including people here), for whom I want nothing but good things. On the other, Aaron Rodgers is one of the more insufferable athletes in recent memory, and I do not want any good things for him.

    LarryDavidConsideringPalestinianChickenDotGif

Yeah Aaron Rodgers is kind of a tough sell. I’m just gonna ignore the Aaron Rodgers part of it all. It’s a bit easier because the Jets aren’t “my” team, I’m just kind of a Jets tourist.

Worse human being, Aaron Rodgers or Brett Favre? Might have to go with Favre on that one.

Gross as I find Aaron “I’m just asking questions” Rodgers, Favre sexually harassed a female coworker and then was involved in a scheme to embezzle government funds. So, for the moment, him.

I’m hoping that between my kid’s volleyball season and the Jets, I can have enough to keep me occupied during the next month of NBA vacuum.

The vacuum seems more vacuum-y than normal this year, right?

Favre didn’t just embezzle funds, he embezzled money meant for welfare and redirected it to a pharmaceutical company (among other places). That’s pretty high on the ‘going to hell’ index.

My son is a big Jets fan so I root for them, but yeah, Aaron Rodgers is an idiot (and so is Djokovic, even though he’s somehow become more and more likeable.)

In a similar vein, my friends and I were talking about whether we should be listening to music by artists with questionable backgrounds.( It started because I have a signed Michael Jackson photo displayed on my wall) Is it still okay to play his music? Or for that matter, Eric Clapton, who is racist and anti-immigrant?

The consensus was that if you boycotted all artists with sordid pasts and douchey sports stars like Rodgers and Djokovic there wouldn’t be much left to watch or listen to.

    Sad but true.

I love the Mission Impossible movies, but Tom Cruise is also very active in promoting and strengthening a dangerous religious cult, so… yeah. It’s hard. But I do instinctively change the station if a Michael Jackson song comes on. And I did root for this team even while DRose was a prominent part of it. I guess we all have to draw whatever lines we feel we can live with.

i really liked the players on the usa roster for the world cup…

good chance neither jalen or josh will be going to paris next year…

i’m hoping the old folks like lebron, kd, steph, AD all stay home…

would much rather see bam, mobley, mitch, julius join the team…

definitely need to see more hali, reaves, and bridges…those 3 had a really good tournament…

“The vacuum seems more vacuum-y than normal this year, right?”

Yes…and it’s weird because we went further in the playoffs than forever and we had 3 rotation players in FIBA and another on the USA select team…

Probably the three biggest reasons are: 1) the lack of a tantalizing draft pick, 2) the lack of intriguing offseason moves, and 3) the shittiness of the NY baseball teams. And for me, normally I’d be up to my ears in school opening-related stuff. So yeah…we need some September juice!

Michael Jackson is a tough one for me. It’s just hard to ignore music that had that much of an impact, and that is touched by the excellence of so many people. When I hear his best work, I don’t just hear him, I hear Quincy Jones and Steve Lukather and Bruce Swedien and Ndugu Chandler and Greg Phillinganes and so many other brilliant musicians and engineers who brought that music to life.

It’s extra complicated for me because I spent eight years making music that I am very proud of with a person who has been canceled and whose music has been consigned to the dustbin of history. It’s like those eight years never happened, and like that music has zero worth.

That said, I fully understand why people have a desire to shun art made by people who fall on the spectrum from “questionable” to “horrible” as human beings. Music is supposed to make you feel something, and if it makes you feel uncomfortable it’s not doing its job.

Of course lots of music makes me uncomfortable; but that’s mostly a tweak at JK since I know he means morally/ethically not emotionally or physically (although some headbanger stuff can work on all four levels).

And then there’s the guy who did the Tracy Chapman cover, but there it’s more being uncomfortable with the country industry that deemed his version fine to play while Tracy’s was not (although it’s nice to see Tracy get some greatly deserved late-season dues out of it all).

Always wanted to do a deep dive into the arguments on this, going back at least to Wagner, as I don’t know where I land, but never wanted it bad enough to do it. Geo, you’re our resident random researcher, want to go in there and get back to us in a few weeks? Full report, pros and cons, with references…

An Olympic team of Lebron, Durant, Curry, Green etc… will be very good, but they are going to be old and slow. Unless they include some younger, energetic, athletic players, I could see them losing to a younger quicker team in a major upset.

I used to dislike Djokovic, but he grew on me. Now I find myself rooting for him. It might not be Federer level love, but it’s strong like.

    Favre is a scumbag.

I’m on a deserted island, but I like Rogers.

I can listen to Jackson’s music, but I strongly dislike the fact that so much of the rest of the world seems to have dismissed what a truly bad guy he probably was. He was likely way worse than the others. It’s Kobe Bryant like forgiveness but on steroids. I don’t get all the love in either case, but Jackson is ridiculous.

So many non white musicians love Clapton now I can forgive a drunken drugged out rant from his ignorant youth. If they are OK with him, that’s good enough for me. I still think he’s overrated as a guitarist even though he was a major part of so much good rock music.

I will make another pitch for the Liberty with the WNBA playoffs kicking off this Friday! The Liberty are excellent, arguably the title favorites even, and fun to watch. Plus the games are very affordable if you’re in the area.

They’ve been a lifesaver for me with the NBA in the offseason, the Yankees sucking, and the Giants…I mean yeesh. Good start for the University of Miami football team, at least.

Cam Payne has been released by the Spurs. I know our FO has been fans in the past, but idk if we have enough money – or the need – to sign him… unless we’re planning a trade that involves Quickley and Frenchie.

I listened to Got To Be There last night and unsurprisingly I had a guilt free experience.

A billion terrible things have taken place to give you this moment and you’re willing to accept 99.99% of them. I don’t know why anyone would draw the line at Michael.

i do like jk does when i hear don’t stop to you get enough – i pretend it’s quincy i’m listening to…

if you’ve ever heard jackson’s disposition – it’s pretty clear who he was when it came to that situation: predator…

what really got to me was when he compared his actions to: jesus’ love…

been watching a lot of Vice lately…watching this young black journalist/comedian now doing some checking in to extreme nationalism/racism in sweden…

    Hate Thy Neighbor…

you could tell he was having a really difficult time understanding their perspective..

raven, are you referring to the appropriation of her music by white country music people?

Spurs just waived Cam Payne. We have no room to play him unless Quickley is being traded, but thoughts on him as a potential pickup in theory?

i normally don’t delve into this stuff and i’m not defending anyone… but the vast majority of celebrity transgessions are not well understood… just like any rumor… you only know what the public knows… and even when these things goto court it’s not really all that cut and dry…. which is why the hysteria that goes into the pitchforks for people … i mean i understand it but there’s probably a certain percentage of folks who are being wrongfully lambasted…

michael jackson was a weird dude.. he also went to trial and found not guilty…. he however almost certainly did have inappropriate relations with children… but to what extent i don’t think is a slam dunk case..

we however do have cases of guys like david bowie… steven tyler… elvis… who almost certainly… and i think verifiably… had sex with underage girls… i think most rockstars up to the 80s had a penchant for that.. and it’s like yea… most of what you like is probably polluted by shitty people… but also… it might not be true either….

for me.. i rather not know.. i don’t really seek it out.. and i’m able to separate the two.. occasionally i don’t.. and i’m not consistent with it myself… but if you delve into the lives of the artists and performances you like… things get very complicated and trying to be congruent with your values and beliefs become increasingly harder if you think ethics are absolute…

good people can do bad things… and it doens’ tmake them bad overall… and bad people can do good things and even genius things… but that also doesn’t make them good people…. just like dumb people can do smart things occasionally… if you can believe that then you can have an easier time squaring all of these things….

michael jackson was a weird dude.. he also went to trial and found not guilty…. he however almost certainly did have inappropriate relations with children… but to what extent i don’t think is a slam dunk case..

I think we are talking about degrees of bad here. The age of consent varies from country to country and culture to culture. There are even different terms for sex with children and sex with post pubescent teenagers. It’s illegal to have consensual sex with a post pubescent teenager in the US under between 16-18 depending on the state, but people (imo appropriately) typically want you to burn in hell if you have sex with a child.

We argue more when the Knicks are bad.

We got the Hart/pick thing out of our system already, and people probably feel less strongly about that move than others.

Signing Donte and moving Obi are pretty meh moves.

There just isn’t much to talk about with a quiet offseason. Not much speculating to do, just waiting to see which Randle we get this year and if Hart can play as an NBA 4.

On the other hand, USA finally went with Walker Kessler and sat JJJ the whole game (I know it listed illness, but I always wonder). They lost, but we won the rebounding battle for once.

Without watching, it seems more on the guards/wings for letting SGA/RJ/Brooks kill them. You still kinda hope Kessler would’ve closed off the paint better but this was a game we could’ve actually used JJJ. Maybe put him at PF instead of C.

To me it has nothing to do with degrees. I’m sure they were all terrible people.

Even the ones we think aren’t bad were probably just better at hiding their shit. Like, I get why you hated rooting for Derrick Rose. But statistically speaking, it’s likely there are 3 or 4 rapists on our current team.

If you’re struggling it’s because you’re trying to accept them. But believe it or not, acceptance comes naturally. The trick is to notice your resistance and let it go.

    It’s just music. Enjoy it.

Fatty Arbuckle was not a great guy. Does that mean we all have to stop watching his movies?

Hey geo, i wouldn’t call it appropriation really, since I don’t feel strongly about people doing covers, it’s common, see Joe Cocker or Cassandra Wilson (JK you can correct me at your leisure). It’s more the sad state of affairs in the US that his song blew up, when it was a fairly exact replica of hers except sung in a shitty twang with not much emotion. And she got zero air time on country radio back in the day, having done pretty much the exact same song but better, with the only one (well, two) differences being about the artists themselves.

Speaking of such, Kevin Porter Jr. just arrested for battery and strangulation of his girlfriend.

Who was asking about whether Houston or Dallas was going to be better this year? Retake?

It’s easy for me to separate the artist from the art. So easy that I can still enjoy Woody Allen movies, even Manhattan.

For me, I understand “cancel culture” to mean canceling contracts, appearances, and other outward displays of support. Not canceling their contributions to society. Imagine if we retroactively canceled Plato and undid everything that he influenced. We would literally be back in the dark ages.

Athletes, though, are a bit different. They don’t really contribute that much to society outside of their particular niche. All we do is root for them, and try to live vicariously through their achievements. We don’t dance to them, or make out to them, or get high to them, or try to form an NBA team just to get laid. So it helps if the athlete is cool and is nice and is gracious and is nice to puppies. But I don’t pretend that any of them actually are. I would probably want to be friends with very few of the these people in real life. (And I have been friends with some of them in real life, some that have even been canceled themselves, and they’ve been perfectly nice people. And even still).

First, props to our own acerbic poster JK – nice tune yesterday, relaxed cool vibe under a rough story. Very West Coast. I hope in rooting for JK I’m not rooting for a bad guy – I mean, he is a Raiders fan, so I’ll just have to hope….

My own rule is, if they’re alive, boycott them; once they’re dead, enjoy. My enthusiasm for Jackson dimmed with all the rumors, but I stopped listening to him completely when I met a young model who slept over at the ranch a few times and had stories to tell (desire being a girl). I was happy when Jackson died because there was one less predator in the world and I could listen to his stuff again. And I do love a lot of his stuff, though more Off The Wall than the later albums.

But for me, they gotta be dead.

And she got zero air time on country radio back in the day, having done pretty much the exact same song but better,

Country radio didn’t play a song that wasn’t a country song seems an odd thing to be upset about.

Tracy Chapman probably isn’t mad about the royalties that came from that cover. She’s the sole credited writer of “Fast Car.”

Interestingly her own version has 3x as many streams as the smash hit cover. One billion streams combined.

Great points, JK. I knew you’d correct my ass.

And Hubert, same song. Virtually exact. They played it the second time. If it wasn’t country the first time, why was it the second? If I sing “Beat it” with a southern drawl, does that make it country?

And Rama, I kinda like it but I’m going to have to sleep on your rule. But I do like that it’s simple, and solves all the “Can’t listen to Wagner” complaints.

And Hubert, same song. Virtually exact. They played it the second time. If it wasn’t country the first time, why was it the second?

Because the guy who covered it is a country singer and he’s signed to a country label that has deals with country radio to play whatever stupid music they tell them to.

It’s not like there are guys sitting there picking songs to play based on the quality of the songwriting.

I’ve actually been writing some country tunes lately… we’re trying to break into that racket. So I’ve been deconstructing that much-maligned genre of music, trying to see how it works, and what the key elements of a hit country song are.

“Fast Car” actually works perfectly as a country song, because it’s rooted in storytelling. Sad story, but with an aspirational spirit to it. Simple chord changes, nothing too fancy. Works well on acoustic guitar. Checks all the boxes.

There is kind of a split in country music these days, there’s the more mainstream “bro country” kind of style, exemplified by folks like Morgan Wallen, and a more “artsy country,” exemplified by people like Sturgill Simpson, Jason Isbell, and Zach Bryan. A lot of the “bro country” kind of tunes sound like Nickelback with a slightly heavier drawl. The smash hit song “Last Night” by Morgan Wallen could easily have been a Nickelback song.

Zach Bryan is an interesting artist in that he has massive widespread appeal yet doesn’t fit neatly into the “bro country” box. He reminds me a bit of a songwriter like Ryan Adams, except if Ryan Adams was sincere and not putting on an act. To me Ryan Adams seems to be wearing the country tropes like a costume, while Zach Bryan lives and breathes it.

Anyway, Zach Bryan is a huge deal in that world, which is kind of encouraging because he’s quite good. His newest record is charmingly rough around the edges, no Auto Tune, no slick production. If you watch concert videos of him on YouTube, there are entire stadiums singing every word of his songs.

Sturgill Simpson is incredible. Big fan of his early work.

I drove to Montauk last week with a California girl whose Spotify was set to Morgan Wallen Radio. Every now and then a song that didn’t suck would come on and it was always Zach Bryan.

I actually discovered Simpson while I was watching The Leftovers. Liv Tyler’s character was dancing with Tom Garvey to his cover of The Promise.

JK I hate most country but really enjoy Jason Isbell — really great song writer/story teller in my opinion. Got excited since you mentioned him

Early Ryan Adams (aka the first Whiskeytown album) was some of the best country music made after the 1970s and is pretty much the blueprint for Zach Bryan. If Adams had just gone in a neo-folk instead of an unbearable Emo direction, he might’ve looked prescient. Oh, and he’s a scumbag.

I have very little trouble separating the artist/performer/director from the art/performance/production unless we’re talking about the ultra-extremes. The fact that I spend so much time, energy, and money rooting for a team owned by the likes of James Dolan pretty much disqualifies me from moralizing on the subject.

JK, what you’re doing reminds of something Mark Knopfker once said. He said something to the effect of that when he started learning country music it expanded his musical vocabulary. You are in good company (assuming you like Knopfker’s music)

Giants fans sat in the rain to watch their team lose 40-0 to the Cowboys and are still not the most miserable fans at MetLife in the last 24 hours.

Pretty much sums up the last decade or so of New York football.

haha did the Jets’ o-line really give up a season-ending injury on a sack on their all-time great QB acquisition on the first possession of the season

you can’t make this shit up

He knew that O-line was going to be the end of him, he put it out there in game 1 of the preseason.

It sure seems fishy that it’s his ankle but there didn’t seem to be a typical ankle roll. Very worrisome.

I just noticed I wrote Knopfker instead of Knopfler. I don’t know how that happened

TNFH, actually I find the Giants result more depressing than the Jets one. There was a lot of hype about this year’s Giants and they laid the biggest egg possible. For the Jets, Rodgers is so old, I basically took it for granted he’d get injured at some point. It’s bad, but It just happened early instead of late in the season. And the Jets aren’t getting blown out without him and are playing a watchable game.

“I just noticed I wrote Knopfker instead of Knopfler. I don’t know how that happened…….”

It wouldn’t be so impossible to fathom it being a simple typographical error…….if you hadn’t done it twice within the same post. 🙂

Actually, when I typed the correction post I typed Knopfler very carefully and it converted to Knopfker as soon as it posted and I had to edit the post right away to correct it. I don’t know why. I’ll probably have to edit this post too

its a shame…this is a good defense…but we have mark sanchez level quality back there on the offense at qb…

Jets defense is ferocious and good enough to keep them in a lot of games while Rodgers is out.

If the Jets win Week 1 against the AFC East favorite Buffalo Bills with Zach Wilson instead of Aaron Rodgers, “LOLKnicks” will never be necessary ever again.

    I really like Sturgill Simpson.

I thought you were talking about Luke Bryan for a second and was having some issues with that JK.

I still love Ryan Adams. Can’t quit him but he is an asshole.

    “Z–man says:
    September 11, 2023 at 21:18
    Aaaand the season’s over…”

…ok I’ll give it another week.

In a theoretical binary world where I have to choose to listen only to either the music of pedophiliacs, predators, and other socially repugnant individuals or listen only to the music of the fine upstanding citizens that play Bro Country, give me R Kelly stat!

Ryan Adams is a billion dollar talent with a ten cent brain. He should have had a much more significant career than he actually did, but he has buried himself in an avalanche of ill-advised, cocaine-fueled decisions.

I don’t know him personally, have never met him, but the horror stories are legendary.

That felt like that super-hyped up game where Zion was finally facing North Carolina in one of college basketball’s biggest hyped-up rivalries and then had his sneaker blow out a few seconds into the game.

His career has never really recovered since then, either.
