Yesterday was one of the ‘Bockers better performances, and dare I say they seem to be playing a little better over the last week or so. They’re competing better against good teams, and you don’t get the feeling like good teams can just easily put them away by flipping the switch.

You can see the effect in the team SRS. Knicks are slowly climbing, up to 20th now. There are some tough games coming up, so let’s see if this proves to be sustainable.

Exactly my take, JK. Not surprisingly, what has become evident is how important both Mitch and Grimes are to the rotation.

Site seems to be on the fritz, but trying this again:

    https://theathletic.com/3957444/2022/12/01/knicks-value-shots/

Good, brief piece from Katz on changes we’ve made to our shot distribution and how they’re (positively) impacting Randle specifically. It sounds like Jonnie Bryant and co. worked with Randle extensively about this.

For all of Thibs’ warts, I don’t think he’s leaving much on the board offensively. Ironically enough given his reputation, it’s our defensive scheme that lends itself to skepticism.

    In other news…

"Internally at MSG, there is heightened scrutiny on the club’s game-by-game performance. … and it’s not solely focused on Thibodeau."The Knicks' slow start has the organization under a microscope (via @IanBegley ) https://t.co/BYzLbuKNKJ pic.twitter.com/HuIT55weHE— SNY (@SNYtv) December 1, 2022

A bit strange that us being decidedly mediocre is coming as a surprise to anyone. That was always the “plan!”

Re the Giannis discussion, what sets Kareem, Wilt, Jordan and LeBron apart for me is that they all won less MVPs than they deserved. Each of them should have won like 6 or more in a row plus more. There were other all-time greats in their day, but they towered over their peers in their respective primes. Giannis has like 5 legit competitors…Durant, Steph, Jokic, Embiid, and Doncic…oh, and LeBron.

I’m glad that the prior thread’s Kendrick-Perkins-on-a-glue-sniffing-bender-level take will die in that thread

    do not revive it here

I already have one new year’s wish – it is for Randle to shift the great effort he puts in arguing with the refs to his defensive assignments.

Internally at MSG, there is heightened scrutiny on the club’s game-by-game performance.

What does this game-by-game mean? That if Brunson had made his FTs, everybody would get a raise, and because he didn’t, everybody is getting fired? Is there a normal team that evaluates things game-by-game? As i said, Dolan is probably getting anxious.

Don’t laugh, but I think part of the site’s problems are hacking related. I get a ton of new-user spam. So I’ve implemented some counter-tactics, and monitoring. Found one IP just blasting the site from Vietnam. Another from a datacenter in Colorado.

Why anyone other than the many people I’ve banned over the years would want to hack this site, I’ll never understand.

Fun fact – Trae Young is shooting the same from 2 and 3 point range as Russell Westbrook.

The only thing that saves him is he gets to the line a lot and makes over 90% of them.

“Re the Giannis discussion, what sets Kareem, Wilt, Jordan and LeBron apart for me is that they all won less MVPs than they deserved.”

LeBron has won four MVPs, 2008-2009, 2009-2010, 2011-2012, 2012-2013. Before that run was Kobe and Dirk. In the middle of it was Derrick Rose and after it was Durant, Curry (twice), Westbrook, Harden, Giannis (twice) and Jokic (twice).

Maybe you take an MVP away from Derrick Rose and give it to LeBron, but that’s about it.

    Mike

    @JCMacriNBA
Seems like in the annual “Which guy will the Knicks regret passing on in the late lottery?” race, Jalen Williams has taken a sizable lead.

Sorry, but I don’t see Jalen Williams taking any minutes from RJ. Be serious here.

It’s kind of like saying Obi should play over Randle. Just preposterous.

Going to be very difficult to root against Japan in the World Cup. Their fans in super elite category right now.

thank goodness i have enough grief, regret and guilt of my own to let the knick’s woes mostly pass me by…

i’ve come to learn that the new york knickerbockers are a very suspect vessel to store much hope within…

more importantly – are you making healthy choices at this very moment mister al…remember all day every day – live healthy…

yeah, and if your family isn’t already nagging you enough – please let them know i’d be more than happy to join in 🙂

Going to be very difficult to root against Japan in the World Cup. Their fans in super elite category right now.

Yeah, they are super fun. I like that they only cheer for their team, there’s no cursing the other teams and stuff like that. And some of them come to the stadium in japanese superheroes costumes, i think, and it’s hilarious. And last but not least, do you know that they clean the stands after the game and leave the stadium spotless?

    I did know that!

And they also just openly and uncontrollably weep when their team wins, possibly for the first time in their lives.

I saw a stat they had the ball 17% of the time in the group star and won twice. Hard to believe.

I saw a stat they had the ball 17% of the time in the group star and won twice. Hard to believe.

Yeah, my son sent me something like it for this game. They were with 20% possession and 2 strikes on goal… both being a goals and thus they were winning 2-1 against Spain. I don’t remember if they had more strikes on goal after that, but at that point it was really the anti-RJ efficiency (100%). And in soccer that’s really hard to do.

I guess players nowadays take care of their body a lot better than in previous decades, and so the Celtics and Horford agreed to a contract extension (2/20M) for seasons age 37 and 38.

Just one NBA game tonight? Is there a reason for this? And to make matters worse, one of the teams is the Pistons.

Since this is a stats site, I come to note that Miles “Deuce” (Bake) McBride currently has 10.0 assists/turnovers.

Yet somehow they give the minutes to that Brunson hack, at only 4.0.

    @BenRitholtzNBA
Obi was miscast from Day 1.

He then improved in his miscast role.

So now he exclusively plays the miscast role.

    @BenRitholtzNBA
Obi is not blameless in this. He’s lost some aggression and frankly hasn’t finished well this year.

But I can’t help but feel that he’s kind of fulfilled the destiny Thibs set out for him. This is the product he asked for.

“LeBron has won four MVPs, 2008-2009, 2009-2010, 2011-2012, 2012-2013. Before that run was Kobe and Dirk. In the middle of it was Derrick Rose and after it was Durant, Curry (twice), Westbrook, Harden, Giannis (twice) and Jokic (twice).

Maybe you take an MVP away from Derrick Rose and give it to LeBron, but that’s about it.”

    Look at the stats.
-LeBron should have won in 2005-06 over Nash (killed him in WS48, BPM, VORP)
-Dirk was sensational on offense in 2006-07, but nothing special on defense. Still he was very deserving.
-It was a joke that Kobe got it over LeBron in 2007-08. Their stats aren’t even close.

So LeBron arguably should have won 7 out of 8, including 6 straight. At least that’s how I see it.

Horford is an interesting guy. Would he make the HOF with his college success? Good for him getting paid at this stage.

Obi is fun and not Randle. The rest will sort itself out.

Leon was never going to draft Jalen Williams anyway, so who cares if he traded out of the lottery to sign Isaiah Hartenstein?

“But I can’t help but feel that he’s kind of fulfilled the destiny Thibs set out for him. This is the product he asked for.”

I agree. There is absolutely no reason that Nash should have won an MVP, either year. 2006 is a farce, pure narrative generation by the sportsmedia.

2008 was Kobe’s lifetime achievement/heroic effort award. He played all 82 games at a ridiculous 39 MPG and the Lakers won a shitton of games. That said, they went 21-5 when Pau Gasol was in their lineup, and 4-4 when he was inactive after the trade. I hope Kobe bought that man a Rolex or ten. The only reason LeBron didn’t win the award is because of his awful team’s record — no player aside from LeBron had >1.0 VORP. Not one!

Put Pau Gasol in that lineup? They win 60 games and I might never have to think about Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce with championship rings on their fingers.

“Obi is fun and not Randle. The rest will sort itself out.”

Iso-‘zo and Ron Baker were fun too. Alas…

I’m still waiting on Mindaugas Kuzminskas and Ognjen Jaramaz to break out…

Going to be very difficult to root against Japan in the World Cup. Their fans in super elite category right now.

I went to get sushi for lunch. I sat at the bar. I had no idea there was a match on. I ended up watching the 2nd half as the only patron in a room full of Japanese sushi chefs going wild.

    Holy shit Hubert. Well done.

Z-Man – Obi and those guys are just not similar. But not going to fight you on it.

Or maybe Obi just isn’t that good….

My comment had nothing to do with his value, to me he can even be the worst player in the league.

But he was known pre-draft (and after) for some specific skills and I’m just curious to know how many teams would use Obi Toppin in a way that makes him play constantly beyond the arc, with 57% of his shots from 3-point range.

Hartenstein can also be the worst player in the league, but Lue used him in a totally different way and with way better results.

You can have bad players on the rosters, but isn’t your target as a team and organization to use them in the best possible way?

Z-Man – Obi and those guys are just not similar. But not going to fight you on it.

It’s reached the point where he can believe something totally insane and no one, except maybe E, is going to disagree with him because it’s just so exhausting.

Speaking of E, he had a banger at the very end of the Pistons game thread..

“Stop being so monomaniacal, dude, it’s creepy.”

    **********************

And with that, irony is down to its very last breaths.

one “mindfulness” thing i’ve had a challenge adopting is the whole get up in the morning and think/write down/contemplate whatever stuff you’re thankful for…

i get it, i have a full scientifical belief that doing that behavior will improve/enhance your day…

woke up thinking – the knicks can not lose today…

Thursday night football is such a shit product. I really don’t know why the NFL has such a grip on this country.

Anthony Black, a/k/a the real Cade Cunningham, is up from around 15 when I mentioned him about a week ago, to 3 on the latest NBAdraft.net mock draft.

So much for that. Knew that one was too good to be true.

I mean, what Obi could do with proper utilization is not theoretical. Literally last season, he took 58% of his shots at the rim and finished 72% of them. He took 33% of his shots from 3.

If he were to just go with that shot distribution again and paired last year’s finishing numbers with this year’s shooting numbers, he’d be an efficiency monster on medium-to-high usage.

The Novakization is a travesty and I think this ends with another team buying low on him.

I’m in on the nfl, not all in, or even mostly in…

I find the athletes and games to be pretty visually stunning…entertaining…I’m okay with their game rules…

watching Diggs and Allen play catch is way fun…

the running game is back in the nfl…only now it’s the quarterbacks consistently getting the largest single run gains…it’s weird, different…

    I really like the globalization…

less a fan of the human meat grinder of the game…lots of health risk involved…

the tua stuff was disturbing, look, now he may be the mvp…

knowledge, awareness, choice…I don’t know, why I gotta wear a seat belt again?

I haven’t paid attention to how Obie is being defended now. I’m wondering if teams are treating him differently now.

“It’s reached the point where he can believe something totally insane and no one, except maybe E, is going to disagree with him because it’s just so exhausting.”

So let’s see…I express an obviously tongue-in-cheek opinion that a player being more “fun” to watch is not necessarily the metric we should be using to judge coaching decisions by…

and some emotional wreck parachutes in to air past grievances…

naah, that doesn’t sound creepy at all….

“I mean, what Obi could do with proper utilization is not theoretical. Literally last season, he took 58% of his shots at the rim and finished 72% of them. He took 33% of his shots from 3.”

If only it were that easy…

    “d-marsays:

Killian Hayes is killian-ing it tonight”

Without qualification, he was excellent tonight. See, it’s not so hard to be fair, and to have some humor and humility wthout being a smug, condescending, abrasive asshole. You listening, Hubert?

I think it’s important to point out that I rarely resspond directly to any posts from E or Hubert unless they are gratuitously attacking me. I would offer that all posters here can hold up their end in a conversation without their help.

I will continue to express the opinion that Obi is overrated by many of the posters here, and that I truly believe that he’s not a starting caliber player in the NBA, and is not as qualified for that role as Julius Randle, regardless of the aesthetics. Is that okay?

Point guards do take more time. Good for Killian.

Marvin Bagley Jr has actually been decent this year although I guess defense is the issue.

I’d be pretty frustrated if I were a Mavs fan. Or Luka. That team is unnecessarily mediocre/bad. Very reminiscent of early Lebron teams.

Are they using Obi differently than last year? He was standing in the corner out beyond the line most of the time last year too. I think last year he passed on more threes and swung and cut instead. This year he’s looking for and taking the three instead. He hasn’t shown much of a face up game- he’s got no handle. Is there a post game? I mean if Thibs and co. Have forced him to work exclusively on shooting threes at the expense of working on his handle or post game that’d certainly be an issue but I doubt that’s the case. And he definitely needs to be more assertive- I’ve never seen Thibs yell at him for taking the ball to the basket.

Damn I just finished the Goofy episode of Atlanta. Geo, you’re going to love it. How’s it coming along? You in Europe yet?

    “peppersays:

Killian gave a shout out to zman in his post game presser…”

As he should. Although considering that his TS% before tonight’s game was .419, maybe he should hold off on the gloating for a bit longer…

I’m just glad his “renaissance” began vs. Dallas…anything that keeps that pick juicy for us is good by me!

life’s been moving at me fast lately hubie…i’m okay and all…just lots of shit happening…Atlanta is for smoking out and chilling…hopefully there’s some of that coming up this weekend…

I just googled Kanye West to see what Owen was talking about and oh my god no he did not say he likes Hitler, did he? He did? Oh god. How did we get here? How do we get away?

That is all highly regrettable. I think Kanye is having a mental health crisis.

But him closing the interview by saying CP3 had sex with his wife is hilarious

I just read that the Lakers are considering trading Beverley once December 15th rolls around. Lakers management is making Knicks management look great by comparison. I mean they just traded two players for Beverley this summer because Beverley was going to be the perfect fit and helpful with their shooting and defense. Now they feel they should move him?

Knicks-iest outcome of all-time will be when we win the last game of the season to push the Mavs to pick 10 and they draft a superstar. Pick conveys next year at 30.

Having become familiar with the Biosocial theory during DBT, I believe Kanye is what they call a Highly Sensitive Person. When an HSP is invalidated socially, well, shit hits the fan.

So when Kanye was invalidated after the 2016 election, two things happened:

    1. He felt betrayed by and lashed out at everyone who invalidated him.
    2. He sought validation anywhere he could find it, and unfortunately that was in the Alt-Right community.

Whatever, though. I have mental health issues, too; being anti-semitic isn’t a symptom.

It’s still quite sad to see the self destruction. Right before he inserted himself into the national left-right schism, he was the height of his artistic power. The Saint Pablo Tour was insane. There were A list celebrities in a mosh pit at MSG. I remember a night he announced he was going to do one song live in Greenwich Village at midnight and everything below 14th street shut down (he canceled it at the insistence of the NYPD, who said they would be unable to control the crowd). The man even took on (and took down, briefly) Taylor Swift.

And now people are googling “did hitler really invent highways and microphones?” I mean, what the fuck? Someone needs to turn this show off.

My theory on Obi’s rim numbers dropping is that the poor rebounding forces him to stay home and fight for boards rather than leak out. The Obi-break accounted for a lot of his scoring.

*** I just googled Kanye West to see what Owen was talking about and oh my god no he did not say he likes Hitler, did he? He did? Oh god. How did we get here?***

Kanye was clearly jealous of strat getting all the attention for his contrarian take earlier.

(He would have been better off simply saying that Hitler is over-rated by the all-in-one hate metrics and leaving it at that)

I love Strat but I’m a little nervous about how far he might take that one. I mean, he’s still on Phil Jackson. He has also watched every Dallas Mavericks game since the Porzingis trade. We have no reason to think we’ve heard the last of this.

anthony black has started the season ok… but he’s not like cade.. or the real cade at all since he’s no where near the scorer he was…

nick smith is… by all indication.. the guy to watch on arkansas since he has scoring potential along with great size with pg-ey skills… black is sort of impersonating a pg right now because smith is out but there’s other things to be excited about with him… he’s just not gonna be top 5 anything until he can answer the scoring question.. which likely won’t happen…

he’s still pretty good tho and has surprised so far….

Speaking strictly in terms of his music, I had to jump off the Kanye train around the time of Yeezus, which I think is one of the most overrated albums of its time.

To me, so much of great hip hop is about the persona of the MC. In his early days, Kanye (never a top notch MC to begin with) had a plucky kind of underdog kind of charm, and even a little bit of a sense of humor to his music. Yeezus is where everything started to turn into this very dull, self-aggrandizing subject matter and it’s when his persona really started turning into something grating and insufferable.

He’s been pretty weak as an artist for quite a while now in my opinion. I don’t think you can make transcendent music if you’re a truly terrible person with hate in your heart.

Does Kim get full custody now or what?

“I will continue to express the opinion that Obi is overrated by many of the posters here, and that I truly believe that he’s not a starting caliber player in the NBA.”

He literally leads the team in 3-pt percentage at .371 with four attempts per game.

Esa-dog, if he’s leading the team in three point percentage, maybe it’s more valuable to the team winning wise for him to score from outside and get rebounds then trying to have crowd pleasing plays at the rim.
